Explorer.exe Draining CPU (when Ceratin Folder Opened)

Dec 12, 2012

got genuine OEM Win7 Home Premium (64bit) and a Pavilion dv7 laptop. Almost everytime, when I have certain folder opened, explorer.exe starts loading my CPU (13% usually... sometimes it can rise even further !)... explorer loads stays, until I terminate the process via task manager and start it again. It happens ONLY when I open that CERTAIN folder (there are approx. 700 of MP3 files in it). It does NOT happen in any other folders, only in this one. Do you guys have any idea, WHAT can is possibly causing the load ? I have ran several antivirus and antispyware tests, MS Checkdisk as well... nothing changed !

interesting fact 1 : I tried formatting the hard drive and recover the system from scratch... the folder STILL causes explorer load !!

interesting fact 2 : the same happens, when I work with the folder via Total Commander (13% CPU load and in some situations even more !

Having Several Folder's On Windows 7 Opened, How Do I See The Names Of Them

Jun 21, 2012

I know, the easy solution would be to turn off desktop composition, but that would be like disabling visual styles in windows XP, going back to windows 98 look.for me the most important thing about the desktop composition is that it let me choose colors, if not it is fixed to the green/bluish windows 7 default colores and cant be changed unless desktop compositiion is enabled.but when desktop composition is enabled (i mean, by default, it is enabled) when i move the cursor over the taskbar, over the folders i get a very nice chumbanil view, yeah.. pretty cute. but, how do i know which one is the one i am looking for? of course, there are thumbnails, but come on, they are thumbnail of folders.check the images of what i sayhere i can't see the names, until i go one by onewithout desktop compositionbut here with windows 7 at minimum (desktop composition turned off, with just moving the cursor over the folders in taskbar i get the menu with the names and i go to the one i need, fast and without confusion.is there any way i can have the names with desktop composition ON? or at leas the names offer the thumbnails.

File Explorer, One Corrupt Folder?

Aug 30, 2012

There is one specific folder in the Documents library, which when opened directly (like from a shortcut on the dekstop) only shows "corrupted" files with unusable strings for all file names and extensions. However, when opened in tree view, the files appear as they should. So at least it's reassuring that the folder contents are still there and can properly be read and changed. But the issue is still inconvenient and worrisome.I have already tried chkdsk /f on the partition and even mirrored the whole volume to a new harddrive, but that didn't help. I also tried copying the whole folder to another location, it shows up just fine that way as well.

How To Make Windows 7 Look & Act Like Xp Explorer (folder Sys)

Feb 14, 2011

I really use the functionality of win xp explorer regularly (e.g., moving files to new folders as the project status changes). Is there a way to make win 7 explorer look and act like xp explorer. I also like the search feature of xp explorer and the fact that I can easily see the path name, creation and modification date. All of that stuff is essential for my work. If there is not a way to truly make win 7 professional act like the xp explorer (i.e., efficiently) is there a program I can use to take over this function?

How To Stop Explorer From Moving The Folder List

Apr 3, 2010

This has been a pet peeve of mine on Win7 ever since I upgraded months ago.

I'm real big on using Windows Explorer to navigate around my drives, looking at files, photos, movies, whatever. There are two things that the folder list, on the left side of the screen, does differently from it's XP predecessor that bug me:

1) It doesn't auto-expand a folder when I click on it. I have to double-click. Years upon years of doing things one way, and they suddenly change it.

2) This is the one I'm posting about... As I'm browsing down the list on the left, burrowing into sub-folder after sub-folder using the arrows.. right as I'm about to click on a folder that I want to view.. Suddenly the list will SNAP back to the top of the page as if it still thinks I want to be looking at whatever other folder I used to be in (usually the default Libraries folder). So I'll sit there and flip my mouse wheel a few times to get back to where I was.. and it'll SNAP BACK TO THE TOP AGAIN. It also happens when I've selected a particular folder, but I'm trying to navigate to one of the many sub-folders. It'll SNAP back up without warning, putting the root folder that I've selected at the very bottom of the screen, forcing me to scroll down. Again. Also happens when I'm trying to use Explorer to open a file from inside of a program.. File>Open, search, scroll, SNAP, scroll, SNAP, scroll, STOP IT, scroll, there it is. Frankly, it's pissing me off.

If there's one thing that bugs me the most about computers these days, it's when they try to do something "helpful" that I honestly don't want it to do. I know better than Windows what I'm trying to do when I'm using this computer. I am not the AOL-using end user that doesn't know what he's doing.. Technical Support? Yeah, been there, done that.. now I train tech support.. believe me, I know what I'm doing.

Is there some option somewhere to tell Windows to leave Explorer the hell alone when I'm browsing my drives? Get it to play the way I want it to play?

Previously Locked Folder Now Crashing Explorer?

Mar 26, 2012

I re-formatted my C: and did a clean install of Windows 7 64bit. Internet Explorer Folder Stuck On Desktop?

Dec 26, 2011

By mistake I dragged the Internet Explorer folder to the Desktop and now I can't get it off the desktop. This is not the link to open IE but a folder with 2 sub folders (en-us and SCROLL) plus 18 files. It functions just like Windows Explorer. When I click on it I can browse my entire computer the same as if I was in Windows Explorer. I have a new Dell Vostro Computer that I just started up yesterday. It has Windows 7 Professional and IE 9.When this happened IE in the tray would not do anything and I had to drag a copy back to the tray. Now everything seems to work ok but I would like to remove the IE Folder from my desktop. It is not the normal e shaped icon but a folder icon.I have tried everything and I cannot get it off the desktop. I'm logged on as Admin. I know you cannot delete IE. I don't want to do that I just want it removed from the desktop. I could probably restore my system but I have already installed Visual Studio and other software so I don't want to do that.

Explorer Window Folder Thumbnails Disappearing?

Sep 13, 2012

This started suddenly after I turned my desktop pc off before going away for a week. When I came home and turned it back on, it hasn't been "normal" since. When I start my computer, go to my user folder, documents etc., all appears fine. Folders/thumbnails and images within the folder appear as normal. However, if I open (for instance) my "downloads" folder, the folder icons and associated icons are initially displayed as "normal", but I see that the explorer bar (where I see C:/user/downloads, etc) is "computing items" but it never stops. A green "progress bar" SLOWLY moves across that "text window" and then it stays green. As if the pc is having trouble reading what is in the folder.Once that happens, if I back out of the folder and then go back in to it, most of the folder icons/thumbnails/pictures are no longer visible. If I navigate to other folders, it's the same thing; many (but not all) of the folder icons and the thumbnails within are not displayed. Example: in my "user file" the AppData and Tracing folders, the icon is non existant....yet my Contacts, Desktop, Favorites, Documents etc. are shown as standard windows "yellow folders" but not the thumbnails that I have associated with them. Also, the file info (if I highlight a file name) does not appear at the bottom of the explorer window, as it normally would for me.I have run my anti-virus, malwarebytes, which are showing no problems and I have also tried "indexing" but no luck. I do have an external drive that is close to full, but it is disconnected. My C drive is
currently 873gb full of 1.35tb. Recovery partition is 1.63gb free of 13.2gb - which I have never "messed with", though I have previously done 2 "reset to factory settings"

Slow Explorer Progress Bar On Large Folder

Apr 19, 2010

Clicking on a large folder in Explorer can cause a slowly-moving green progress bar. In some cases this can take several minutes to complete.

A common cause is thumbnail caching of image and video files, resulting from having properties | customize | "optimize this folder for:" set to pictures, vs documents or General items.

The most likely solution: in Explorer, right click on folder, select properties, customize, under "optimize this folder for:", select either General items, or documents. Set check box "Also apply this template to all subfolders", then click apply.

The slow progress bar is apparently caused by Explorer scanning the folder and all subfolders to pre-render thumbnail images for image and video files. This happens if the "optimize this folder" setting is pictures or videos. This happens when merely clicking on the top-level folder.

If "optimize this folder" is set to documents or General, the thumnails are not rendered until you actually click on the folder or sub-folder containing those.

This was discussed in another thread on this forum, but it was full of speculative remedies, and the actual cause and remedy was not posted until the last thread (and one year after the thread was started): Accessing drives in Windows Explorer takes a long time I'm creating this thread with a more exact title and concise description, to aid in finding the solution based on a symptom search.

While the above is the most likely cause of a slow Explorer progress bar, there are other possible causes. These include clicking on a remote folder on a slow network, general slowdown due to indexing, disk drive or filesystem caching disabled, disk drive retries due to impending hardware failure, corrupted video files or codec, etc.

Explorer Doesn't Display Content Of One Folder

Jan 7, 2013

I can't open a specific folder to display the content with Explorer.I'm running Windows 7 7601.win7sp1_gdr.120830-0333 Home Premium. The folder is on a secondary HDD where I also have the system folders Libraries and Download. All the system and program files are on my primary SSD C: drive. What doesn't work:With my regular account, on that specific folder, I can't display the content via Explorer. I can't either get it when I try to open it from inside applications such as Notepad++, PotPlayer, Media Player Classic, VirtualDub. What works:If I enter the name of a file in the File name field of the Open command of the application, the file will open normally. When I point to that folder with the Windows command line console, and use the DIR command, it will display the complete list of files. Finally, when I look at the folder from the Admin account or from a Guest account, Explorer will display the content.instantaneously.

Things I did:I have checked Show hidden files in Folder Options.I did a Check Disk, which didn't find any error.I also ran: ATTRIB -s -h mbrp /s /d (Where mbrp contains the directory causing problem) hoping that somehow, some System Attributes could be removed.FWIW, it seems this happened as I was trying to run an Avisynth64 script with new installation of MPC-HC64.A this point, I am out of ideas. I know that switching to a new regular user account would solve the problem, but I see that as a last resort.

Windows 7 Explorer 50 / 80 CPU After Opening Folder With Music In Wav Format

Jul 1, 2010

I recently installed Windows 7 and now when I open a folder containing wav files explorer jumps up to 50 to 80 CPU usage. The folder contains wav music files because I am converting them from 320 mp3, and FLAC to use in Ableton Live, which is a music workstation. The folder it originally happened to came from my previous hard drive, which may have got damaged, so the files might be corrupt.. but this issue didn't happen with the folder in question after the hard drives incident (which may have resulted it having bad sectors), when I was using windows xp.Recently I converted a FLAC file to wav using this new windows 7 install. When I tried to access the folder that it was put it, again explorer jumped up to 80 percent, dllhost.exe is also contributing the cpu strain, with around 30 cpu usage.I googled this and I was recommend to download a patch for windows 7 which promised to solve the exact problem I had, it said something about explorer taking up CPU and corrupt wav files, however even after this fix.
