Bootmgr.exe Missing... Mpio.sys Missing Or Corrupted. Unable To Boot?

Oct 28, 2011

I just got a computer for free, a Dell Studio 1555. When I got it, it would try to boot, then come to a screen that said that bootmgr.exe was missing. Sometimes I got a message that said something like mpio.sys was corrupted or missing. I have a Win 7 disk, so I put it in and tried to repair the installation. Each time I ran it, it said that the repair had failed. I tried to reinstall windows 7, and It made it to the first restart in the process. It showed the "Starting Windows" screen, but the colors of the windows logo never appeared, then I got the missing bootmgr screen. I decided to install Ubuntu and see if that worked, and it did (I installed it alongside the Windows installation). It was Ubuntu 10.04. I thought, "OK, so i'll just use this as a Linux machine"...and I decided to go back and reinstall so that I could use the entire hard drive. It never worked correctly again. Each subsequent time that I installed Ubuntu, I was told something along the lines of "Gnome Power Manager did not install correctly" and got a slow and choppy Ubuntu installation.Tried to install 11.10, and it failed completely. I opened the Ubuntu live from my usb drive, and opened the disk utility. I now cannot format, reformat, partition, or delete partitions on the drive. Is all of this just a case of a hard drive on its last legs, or is there something else going on here?

Drivers Missing For Upgrading To Windows 7 Installation?

Feb 26, 2011

I have run the Windows 7 Compatibility Upgrade Advisor on my Vaio VGN-FZ190. I am getting that two drivers are not compatible with Windows 7:

1) The Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT has the latest that Sony publishes on its support web page for my laptop (Ver. 7.15.11.6760), dated 1/11/2008. On the Nvidia web site, it says that to get updates for my laptop "you must contact your computer vendor", so no updates are available there. Sony does not provide a newer Nvidia driver either.

2) The "Bluetooh Stack for Windows by Toshiba" Ver. 5.00.00. This is the most current driver that Sony publishes for this laptop model on the Vaio support web site.

I don't want to embark on the Windows 7 upgrade until I know I won't run into any critical issues that could lead me to who knows where.

Can't Find Drives During Installation -- Bootmgr Is Missing

Nov 7, 2012

I purchased a vizio all in one desktop model CA24-A2 , with windows 7 installed. I upgraded it to windows 8, but decided to return back to windows 7 because the Metro UI always crashes on me. I purchased a windows 7 disc and booted the computer off the disc. When the installation asks which drive to install it to, nothing appears. For some reason, the installation disc is not reading the drives. I've checked vizio's page, but didn't find any drivers for the hard drive that would work. I check the Bios menu and both drives appear. I've read on other forum about changing the bios mode (AHCI,IDE), but my bios menu is very restricted, and i dont have that option available. I used MiniTool Partition wizard on a bootable cd, and it was able to see my hard drives as well. I added some pictures below. When i try to boot windows with windows 8, "bootmgr is missing" error appears. After restarting my computer several times it seems i only have access to the bios menu f2, and not f8 for recovery.

Software Installation Fails Because Of Missing MSXML4

Oct 28, 2011

The thing is I have installed the latest update to MSXML4 SP3 - in fact WU did it for me, but there is no MSXML4.dll in Windows/System32. 3 and 6 are there OK.I can't figure out why this is as I haven't done any registry cleaning.Tried sfc /scannow, it finishes OK but it says some files are corrupted. This is my spare Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 on Disk 1 partition 1 - in other words the 4th in a row of multi-boots with the boot files residing in Vista on C: (It goes C:, D:, then on the next disk L: and M:Dare I stick a Win 7 SP1 installation disk in and do an upgrade/repair install? Will that lose me my mutli-boot? I checked both my Windows 7 installations on my main PC and the one on my Netbook and neither one carries it. Neither do any of my Vista installations. But they all have the MSXML 4 SDK installed by Windows Update - but that installs into Program Files (x86) not the Systemroot.Perhaps there is a glitch in the installer as it seems to be thinking everyone has XP, as it has all - MSXML2,3, 4, and 6 DLL's in that exact location.

Installation Problems - Missing Hard Drive

Nov 2, 2009

I'm not entirely sure if this is the right category for this thread, but it seems to be the one that closest fits my problem.

A bit of background detail to this story (which you may already know if you've seen my other threads):

I had my desktop PC running W7 fine despite some hitches with an old hard drive of mine. I was able to get hold of a slightly higher specced system recently (a pre-built Acer Aspire T650-8B7H, if that means anything to anyone which has a slightly faster processor, an apparently better motherboard, yada yada) and so transferred my 9800GTX+, RAM, PSU and hard drive in to the new PC.

However, obviously Windows 7 didn't like the significantly different hardware so I nuked the drive and went to reinstall Windows 7, only to find that the Windows 7 install disc refused to pick up my SATA drive (which I had Windows 7 installed on before) in the new PC. Conveniently at the same time my problematic hard drive completely died on me, so I shrugged it off as that being the problem. However...

I've just bought myself a 500GB Western Digital Caviar Black hard drive. It's very nice, and I had no problems partitioning it up and installing multiple linux distributions on multiple partitions. However, I stuck my Windows 7 install disc in to install it on the drive. I choose to make a custom installation and... nothing. The drive just doesn't show up. I'm told to load drivers, but since when do you need to install drivers for an internal hard drive?

I've had this problem before and thought it was a problem with the hard drive, but it shouldn't be happening to a brand new drive. The install disc picks up IDE drives just fine, but as of yet it hasn't found either of the SATA disks I've had in there.

Any ideas? I would put it down to a BIOS setting but I had no problems installing Linux on other partitions of the same drive.

Cannot Boot Into Windows 7 / File /boot/BCD Is Missing With An Error Code Of 0x0000007

Mar 26, 2011

I cannot boot into Windows because it says that the file /boot/BCD is missing with an error code of 0x0000007. If I run Repair from my installation disk and in System Recovery Options, it says that it has detected problems and asks if I want to repair it. The items it wants to repair are: " The following startup option will be repaired:Name: {bootmgr}Identifier: {9DEA862C-5CDD-4E70-ACC1-F32B344D4795}

The following startup options will be added:

Name: Windows 7 Ultimate (recovered)
Path: Windows
Windows Device: Partition=C: (476938MB)
Name: Windows Recovery Environment (recovered)
Path: Recovery9426aa67-30ff-11e0-a348-506313b5e718Winre.wim
Windows Device: Partition=C: (476938MB)

A copy of the current boot configuration data will be saved as C:BootBCD.Backup.0002"If I click yes, it says that it cannot save the current settings for the BCD and refuses to continue. When I choose Startup Repair, it attempts to fix the problem but fails.

The problem details are:

Root cause found:
No OS files found on disk.
Repair action: Partition table repair
Result: Failed. Error code: 0x3bc3

I think that this is because Startup Repair is trying to fix the thumbdrive that I keep my Windows 7 install files in. I am overseas now and as my computer does not have an internal optical disk drive and my external drive is back home, thus using my thumbdrive is the only way to access the repair console.

I tried running a few commands, namely:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Fixmbr and fixboot work, but when I run RebuildBCD, it detects C:Windows as having a Windows installation, but if I type Y(yes) or A(all), it says that the requested system device cannot be found.

Windows 7 Installation: Missing Operating System After Using Imagex?

Oct 11, 2011

I'm an IT proffesional, currently going learning for my Configuring Windows 7.I used windows 7 since the first beta came out, and I must say, I never was dissapointed by it.But because I am learning I am trying to get all the computers here running windows 7, and I have a computer in my office wich I am trying to install it on.There are a few problems thoug:The computer only has a CDrom player, and cannot boot from a usb device. When I first got it, windows XP was installed, and it only had 750 mb of memory. Stupid as I was, I decided to give it a try anyway installing windows 7 from inside Windows XP using an external DVD player connected with USB.This failed, and gave me lots of error so I tried the next step.

As It cannot find a network share I had to instal windows PE on a CDrom and from there I could acces my extrernal HDD where I had a clean copy of windows 7 on as INSTALL.wim. I cleaned everything, and created everything from scratch with succes. Image X worked, and BCDboot worked. So it seemed to go great. After restarting my system, it still will only give me, Missing operating system.I tried to search on the internet but couldn't really find something related to my problem. In the bios it says I can start from IDE CD-rom device, Diskette drive, Hard-Disk Drive c:, Integrated NIC (Disabled)I bought some different memory and I am now at 1.5 mb DDRIt is an Intel Pentium 4 processor 2.4 Ghz Level Cachge 512 Integrated. It's a DELL Optiplex Gx260 Series.

The boot menu gives me:. Normal2. Hard-Disk Drive C: (Wich I used for my 100mb) (And I used D for my big partition and with BCDboot I used D:WindowsSystem32cdboot d:windows /s D: ) Wich worked because he did copy the files.

Error 0x80070241 - File Is Corrupted Or Missing And Installation Cannot Continue

Oct 22, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium 64 bit and I'm trying to upgrade to 7. I bought the college copy so I only have the download, no DVD.

When I get to like 10% of installation I get error 0x80070241, and it says that a file is corrupted or missing and installation cannot continue.

I know everyone hates n00bs who ask questions that have already been answered, and I did google this first (and call Microsoft), but the results I found on google went right over my head and Microsoft was not helpful at all (I shot them off an e-mail thinking I might get better service that way, but they haven't responded yet.)

Anyway, what can I do? I really really want Vista off my computer but it like refuses to die lol.

Missing Operating System - Booting From Installation Disc Doesn't Work?

May 6, 2012

Firstly I should say that I am primarily a mac user, and it is not my laptop I am posting about. Although I am reasonably knowledgable about Windows, I haven't used it since XP, about four years ago, and so am pretty rusty.Basically, my girlfriends computer randomly turned off about a week ago, she assumed it was a dead battery, plugged it in, and then when it turned back on it wouldn't boot displaying error message: missing operating system. As it is a Dell laptop it didn't come with any installation discs, and I totally forgot to even make a repair disc when we got the laptop. I managed to get hold of a Windows 7 Installation Disc and license key for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit through my university. I think the laptop was previously running Windows 7 Home Premium, but that's all I know, and I'm not entirely sure of that fact.

Anyway, burnt the .iso to disc and have tried to boot several times from DVD Drive. The laptop loads the files from the DVD fine, and gets as far as the "Starting Windows" screen, where it seems to get stuck for a few minutes, until it becomes a black screen with just a cursor (the cursor still moves). This also happens with an 64 bit repair DVD I also managed to get hold of.

Re-boot A PC After Software Installation?

Windows 7 needs to be restarted so much after installing software or anti-virus updates is that there are some system files that are in use while the computer is running and when the software needs to re-write these files it can only do so during reboots. This is why you need to re-boot a PC after software installation. Is my pal correct?

Can't Boot XP Anymore After Installation

Oct 13, 2009

Okay so I installed Windows 7 after taking a break from the Beta. Unfortunately it didn't do what it usually does and let me boot "an older version" or anything like that. It just booted Windows 7. I read some stuff on this forum and ended up using bcdedit to try and fix it. These are the exact commands I entered:

bcdedit /create {ntldr} /d "Windows XP"

bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=C:

bcdedit /set {ntldr} path
tldr

bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addlast

Note: C: Is where XP is. O: is where Windows 7 is.

After doing that I got a dual boot screen at start-up. When I select Windows 7 I start windows 7. When I select Windows XP it just restarts the computer and shows me the screen again.

Any suggestions? I don't know how to get back into XP now. I guess I could disable the SATA than Windows 7 is on and it would be forced to start up XP (which is on an IDE) but I really want to get this dual boot business fixed.

I would just say screw it and abandon XP for now except I password protected my files and now I can't get to them unless I transfer ownership one by one. :S

EDIT: I fixed my problem, and in an unexpected way. After I posted I was frantically trying to decide what was different this time (as I had gotten this setup to work before). I then remembered that I had set my SATA drive as the primary boot drive in the bios in my effort to get Windows 7 to work when the boot sector was corrupt. I changed it back to my IDE drive (the way it originally was) and the dual booting worked again.

I never would have thought that would be the problem. It doesn't explain other users who had the exact same problem though. I doubt very many people decided to play with the controllers in the bios.

Windows 7 Installation Boot?

I currently have 4 drives. I had Vista on my primary drive1, no OS secondary slave drive, Linux on my sata drive1, and Windows 7 64x on my sata drive2. I recently deleted Vista and installed windows 7 86x on my primary drive. Before installing Windows 7 86x the windows boot option gave me the choice to choose between the three OS and now it does not. How can I get the boot manager to recognize my windows 7 64x drive which is not the primary drive?

I played around with the RAM, tried only one of the 2gb in all 4 DDR2 slots and it booted perfectly, i did the same with other 2gb stick and same result so it isnt the RAM, and neither does it seem its the slots. Did the same thing with the 1gb and fine. tried every permutations involving the 4 sticks but whenever i top 2gb windows freezes.I read around first and looked at similar problems people have had on this, and so i cleared the CMOS and updated the BIOS but still the same result (didn't do all permutations this time).
