Sep 20, 2011I'm looking for a software that can create one installer which can install a custom list of applications.

View 5 RepliesI'd like to create a backup image of a clean install of Windows + certain applications. My plan is this: Format my SSD that I am currently using. Install fresh windows 7, do all the updates, install a few choice applications, and then get an image of it to use for recovery. I have a few questions on this topic as well:
1. This is probably obvious, but I want to make sure; I can store the image wherever I like, correct? If I am using an SSD for my boot drive, I can image that, and store the image on a regular hard drive, right?
2. How big will the image be? Is it going to be as big as the entire drive that I back up? I cannot imagine how it would go any differently, but I am hoping for some unrealized magic.
3. Do I need to buy the Ghost software? If not, does it make imaging a whole lot easier to make it worth the price tag?
4. How arduous and time consuming is the actual recovery process?
p.s. Something I just thought of. I don't know how I would do the actual backup without an OS to interface with so maybe I could make the image contain everything except the basic install of windows to cut down on space and time. Is this feasible?
Is it possible to hack that button so you could, say, launch a special "locking" program instead of loggoff, shutdown, or any of the other options?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to create a custom shortcut and by custom I don't mean the way you usually create shortcuts at, but how you create it from scratch. Like open notepad and write down a script to make it work like an ordinary shortcut. The reason I want to do this is because I have a large collection of music and for the moment I have to open, first my music directory then choose the artist directory then the album directory and finally the playlist file. The way I want it is instead of getting into the album directory I would just have a shortcut in the artist directory that will open the playlist and start the music. And I would even want to have a custom icon on the shortcut. Now you will probably say just create a shortcut like you would normally do and then change the icon. DONE!No the thing is that when I re-install my computer or if I get a new disc with new drive letters or just move my whole music directory the shortcuts will be corrupted cause windows own created shortcuts has the complete file path like "D:DokumentEgna SkivorDeadmau5For Lack Of A Better Name0 For Lack Of A Better Name (Playlist).m3u". The way I want it is just "For Lack Of A Better Name0 For Lack Of A Better Name (Playlist).m3u"

View 0 Replies View RelatedI've been using computers ever since Windows 3.1 and '95 and I have been plagued with dozens upon dozens of hdd crashes and similar occurrences which forced me to reformat and reinstall all the programs I use (and have to search and find them again...). I have learned a lot since '95. One method of keeping my apps and media safer is by keeping them on a separate larger internal hdd and running my OS on a smaller ~400gb hard drive. I have just gotten into creating full system images with Acronis that fill up 3+ blu ray discs, which is ok if I'm only making one ever, but my documents and programs consist of more than half of that data. It would be nice to make one full system image right after I reformat my computer and install all device drivers I'll be using; my questions below are in regards to making images of the programs to allow very simple install later. Let me say this as well: I know of the extreme difficulty of taking a system image created on 'PC A' and using it on 'PC B'.Basically unless PC A and B the same brand and model something is bound to not work correctly due to driver issues and hardware incompatibility. Anyways, what I am interested in now is to get one of my computers installed with all the software and plugins I typically use and create a "system image" consisting of only my programs and the necessary files to have them run properly. I understand this may be unfeasible but I'd like to further my knowledge and hear from others their ideas to my problem. I say it may be unfeasible because, when installing a program, files are saved into many different directories, including various folders within "Users" and the hidden folder "ProgramData" (as well as possibly to the "Windows" folder and/or C: as well as the computer's registry).I feel this may work if I get every file that was created at installation time as well as run windows 7 on all of my computers that I'll be using this "software-only system image" on.Is there any software that will allow me to accomplish my goal or at least make my job easier? If this is possible and assuming I'll only be using 64-bit versions of Win7, will I run into problems between, say, Home Premium and Ultimate? Is the structure or layout of the OS different in the ways / directories it installs programs into?If the above fails or is impossible then.I was considering another idea but with more work for me.In school, both high school and college we had computer labs and every computer had the same programs installed and there were many programs (say 20 programs * 100 computers in the larger labs). Albeit the computers were the same make/model, lets forget that fact for the purpose of this question, as well as the fact that all the computers were networked together which may allow little tricks here and there... Forget those facts and here is my last question: Instead of just having an image of already installed programs would there be a way for me to somehow install, say, 50 programs without launching each one individually? I would be very surprised if a program like this didn't already exist for IT people yet. For example, in a law firm, if someone in the office gets a virus do they call in the IT guys and they 1) reformat the computer 2) install OS 3) reinstall all required software one after the next? Seems a bit time consuming, in my example 20 apps * 100 computers, I couldn't imagine installing the same programs 2000 times.

I have tried the Fixits, no good. I have tried to install Windows Updater 4.5 but it tells me that there is insufficient storage space. I have 435 GB of free space on my HD.
I have been trying to install windows 7 on my hd and initially started with ubuntu on partition 1 then resized partition to leave unallocated space for windows 7.Now I am installing windows 7 from cd and can't get past 'where do you want to install Windows' page because of error stated in title.I've tried having unallocated space, a ntfs partition, and now have completely wiped the hd of ubuntu's partitions to clean install windows 7. None of the attempts have gotten me past the location of install page.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just finished my i3 build and am trying to get my Windows 7 Home Premium to install and am not having much success.
First of all, I want to note that I am trying to install from an external DVD-Drive via USB because it's extremely hard to get the Drives out of the old Dell computer. I either have to order new ones, or literally break that case.
Anyways, I've been messing with BIOS settings (mostly SATA config and USB legacy settings) and what not, but no matter what I try (seemingly) I get one of two things to occur:
1) The 'expanding Windows files' sticks on 0%
2) I get the 'Windows Cannot Install Required Files Error'
I'm back on default BIOS settings and am going to listen to you guys, because what ever I do doesn't work
Resently I built a custom computer. I assembled it and it all looked good... but as it got to the startup of windows 7, just past the "starting windows" part, it reboots. Then I wanted to install windows 7 again to see if it would help. But when it gets to the "Starting windows" part, it stays there. I've tried countless things including: Testing the RAM, Changing the PSU, getting another windows 7 install disk, shifting the GPU. But none have worked the least.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI did a custom install from vista to 7(32 bit) today.
I deleted all old restore points through the space management, however, the partition reads a still mostly full. There is only 1.8gb out of 8.3 available. When I access the folder, there is nothing in there, even if I show hidden files.
I believe it is remnants of my old vista recovery drive, which I did not erase prior to my upgrade and was always equally full to what it is now.
How would I go about eliminating these files now so I can backup my new OS installation?

How to Do a Custom Installation of Windows 7 ?
View 0 Replies View RelatedI have a new Dell Precision T3400 which the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor says I can run the 64 bit version of Windows 7 on.I am running XP pro 32 bit version on it. Dell told me I would need to run my 64 bit disc by hitting F12 when rebooting to boot to the disk. The computer then asks me if I want to run from my array or from a usb or cdrom. I choose the cdrom and then is says it cannot start from that drive or some such error. Dell and I did these things:made sure the dvd was an option as a boot drive in Setup.Updated the bios on the drive and the computer itself. this did not work so they replaced the dvd drive. It still will not boot the disk. I tried my xp disk, and the computer WILL boot from it. Dell said its the disk.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to upgrade my Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 32 bit. Since my Vista is the home version and the win 7 I've purchased is professional, I have to do a custom install, which basically deletes all my programs and drivers. My notebook, however, didn't come with any drivers when I purchased it. All it asked me to do was make a recovery disk.
So my question is, how do I find said drivers? I've downloaded a few off HP but do those require existing drivers or can I use those after the Win 7 installation? My main concern is my ATI Mobility Radeon 3200 and CCC.
What I am wanting to do is a custom install of Windows 7 Premium. I'm really no expert on all things Windows, but I have felt for a long time that simply installing Windows from the cd / dvd is not really the most efficient and "power user" way of doing things. I feel that in doing an install from cd / dvd that lots of things are added that are not needed, and that I do not have the kind of control over my operating system (where things go, etc.) that I could have.
