External HDD Works In Windows 7 / Doesn't Work In XP
Sep 2, 2011I have a seagate 2 TB external HDD. It has 1 FAT32 partition. Everything works as expected in Windows Vista/7 and even in Ubuntu.When connecting the external HDD to any XP machine (tested 3 computers with XP), the device will not show up under My Computer.It is visible in Device Manager.Under Disk Management, the drive shows up without any labelling and has improper file system and partitioning.It's as though the partition table is messed up, however, the drive works perfectly on any Vista/Windows 7/Linux pc. [code] Not only is the capacity incorrect, but darn well everything else about the drive shows up incorrect under Disk Management.This happens with all XP PCs. Also, I ran a SFC /SCANNOW with one XP machine in the event the FAT32 drivers or DLLs were corrupted and no resolve.I reinstalled XP on the same machine and the results were identical.

Jan 24, 2013I have a Lenovo u400 laptop and im trying to connect my external samsung syncmaster bx2335 to it through an hdmi/dvi adapter.When it first boots up, the monitor works displaying the lenovo logo but when it gets past the windows logo and onto the log in screen, it switches back to the laptop and the monitor wont respond anymore.I have uninstalled the video drivers and that make the monitor work when windows was on, but once i tried to reinstall the drivers the problem came back.

If I use the external drive on the usb 3.0 port when entering F8/System Repair/Repair from image, the drive is not detected at all, when I plug it into the 2.0 port it is detected. Within windows itself the drive operates fine on the 3.0 hub. I am guessing its some kind of USB 3.0 driver issue within system repair but wondered if there is a work around. Not sure I want to sit and wait for a restore over 2.0 when it could be using 3.0!

On XP it uses just generic usbaudio.sys, it works on macs, linux, etc without any issues. What can I try? I attempted to copy across a windows xp version of usbaudio.sys, but that didn't seem to help (I'm not entirely sure I did this correctly).

I used to connect an external monitor to my laptop, and it worked fine. The issue is that the laptop still detects the external monitor but the external monitor does not receive a signal when I plug it in the VGA (blue trapezoid connector) have played around with the display options an exhausting amount of times and nothing works there. I tried what worked before (extending the display) and trying to clone it. I thought it might be a driver issue and I reinstalled the driver, but this didn't seem to help either. Dec 18, 2011My motherboard is ASRock m3a770de. I built my machine 3 days ago. I have one Hiatchi 500gb internal HD, and one 1TB external HD.I am running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition.After building my computer three days ago, I installed windows, and my external was not being detected through eSATA in the BIOS or in Windows "Probably need to install drivers" I said.So I put in the CD that came with my motherboard, and installed the AMD All in One Driver that was on it. Restarted, and hey, my external was showing up.Today, after installing SP1 (not sure if thats what did it), my ext hd was no longer showing up again. I reinstalled the driver on that CD. Now, I'm not sure if it even installed the first time, because it said it was currently uninstalled through the ATI catalyst installation program. But it didn't work this time. I'm not sure what got it to work the first time. But my eSATA drive was being read in IDE mode for three days. When trying to get it work the first time, I did plug it in via USB to see if it would work, maybe that had something to do with it working the first time?
Anyway, I changed my registry to start up in AHCI mode, and then went into my bios and changed my storage config to AHCI. Upon booting, windows would not load with my external HD turned on (anybody know why?), but loaded once I turned it off. Windows then installed AHCI drivers, and upon restarting, both hard drive, external and internal, were being detected as removal storage.Why can't I get my external HD to be read in IDE mode through eSATA? IT doesn't get read through the BIOS or Windows, even if i scan for new hardware.EDIT: sigh, now when I just went to reboot, it wouldn't load windows when my external hard drive was plugged in. Windows loaded when I unplugged it. Windows detected it when I plugged it back in.
External Speakers Work, Laptop Speakers Do Not
Dec 12, 2009I have a Dell XPS M1330 laptop and have recently upgraded to windows 7 professional (32bit) from windows vista. Everything seems to be running smoothly except I can get no sound from the internal laptop speakers. When I plug in external speakers in via the jacks on the front, sound comes through fine, but as soon as I unplug them there is nothing. Headphones also work like this too. Under sounds in device manager, it simply says 'High Definition Audio Device', and I'm not sure if I should be downloading some other drivers?

I have: Windows 7 - 64bit, Hp pavilion dv7-4265dx laptop, AMD Phenom II, with the newest Bios available on Hp Support website.I need: My WD 3TB Cavalier external to be readable on my windows machine. (Just bought it from newegg.)
The drive letter will not show itself under my computer, so I cannot format quickly; which isn't terrible, because I plan to encrypt it with Truecrypt. But both Truecrypt and Easeus are only able to detect 2TB, not the full 3. I have even gone to cmd and ran diskscan, but that will only show 2TB. I understand that it's a whole disk size issue; but I've read that some people see two separate partitions, that equal 3, but I don't even get that.
[Update] I converted the new unallocated drive to GPT in disk management. Right click drive > convert to GPT Disk... it increased the drive from 2048GB to 2047.87GB.
Install Windows 7 On An External HD?
Dec 27, 2011I am going to build my own PC soon, but I'm going to keep my current hard drive and use it for my new PC. I have a 500GB external HD as backup, my question is could I install a copy of Windows 7, and use that to boot from with no hard drive in PCI want 2 PCs in my house one to use for stricly backup purposes. My plan is to put a wireless card in my old PC - share a folder - and constantly put files, videossongs, etc... into that folder so it gets backed up on the external HDMy next question is, if I am able to boot with the external HD, can I use the external HD on different PCs? Not to boot Windows - but just to recover files?

Mar 25, 2011I have posted in other forums with no luck.I bought a Samsung SH-D162D DVD Drive in a USB enclosure to connect to my Toshiba laptop via USB.I cannot get windows 7 to find it! When I plug in the USB cable the balloon comes up to say it has been installed (sometimes), I can see it on for about 1 or 2 minutes then it drops off. It isnt listed in my hardware or anything.Its not found in Disk Management or My Devices so it isnt a case of changing the drive letter - i cant find the drive to change it.I have also tried to find the upper and lower settings in regedit....couldnt find them so couldnt delete them as advised in other posts of this nature.It is set to master, the IDE connector and power connectors are fine. Its gotta be a windows 7 problem cause it does show up very breifly. In the minute or 2 its there I cant do anything with it...it just hangs although it will open and close. Ive googled it and cant find anything.Ive also connected it up to another laptop with XP and had no problems so I know the DVD Rom works fine and all the cables are ok.Ive tried in all 4 USB ports on my laptop and also turned off all energy settings...all with no luck. And I also have EVERY windows 7 update.
Heres exactly what happens from power off on the enclosure.
1 - I plug in the USB lead then turn on power to the enclosure.
2 - I quickly go to Start, and I can see the DVD Rom drive E next to my laptops dvd rom.
3 - The green bar at the top starts filling up from left to right and gets about half way then suddenly the DVD Rom icon disappears and so does the green bar.
4 - It then flashes up under the laptops DVD Rom icon with a Local Disk drive E but only for a split second.
5 - Sometimes a balloon comes up saying installing device, then device successfully installed...but not every time.

Nov 27, 2011I have two external USB2 HDs. Whn I click on the Safely Remove HW tray in Windows 7 Ult 64-bit, HD-1 is shown, and I can remove it, but HD-2 is not shown, and therefore I cant remove it.
But HD-2 does show on the Safely Remove HW tray in XP. Same computer, btw. Am I ok to just shut down the HD, or may I run into trouble by doing that? I learned the hard way a few years ago that you can't do that with drives attached to Mac OSX. why that HD would not show up in Windows 7, when it does in XP?

May 1, 2011I had Win 7 Home 64bit installed, but I've been having loads of issues with it, crashes, dvd drive not working properly, and a reallllllly long blank screen after "Starting Windows" Screen (around 2-3 minutes)After trying many, many different methods of fixing these issues, none of which did a darn thing.I decided that I just needed to reload windows.SO I reloaded windows from within the OS itself, (Not a Clean install) but that didn't fix my long boot problem. So I tried a clean install - I formatted the partition I wanted windows on (The same one it was on) and started the install only to get a screen that said I didn't have the proper driver for my DVD drive installed, WELL, it's an LG GH22LP20, and LG doesn't just give out drivers, NO they bundle them with Firmware so when I insert the DVD that came with the DVD Drive, it can't locate a driver for it! I looked online, I can't find anything except older Firmware/driver Software.So now, my only choice is to use my External USB Hard Drive, so I created an ISO of my Win 7 Install Disk using IMGBURN onto my exHDD, BUT Now I get an error saying NTLDR is missing.
