Bugs On 3 Year Old PC / Doesn't Completely Shutdown?
Sep 5, 2012
So Windows seems to be very unresponsive, slow, and buggy on my computer I've had for about 3 years now. It's done this the entire time I've had butince school has started it's really pissing me off when I'm trying to get homework done.Anyway, it has a very slow start up process, and during this the taskbar doesn't respond nor does the desktop and other things. Then at random intervals it does exactly this (that isn't my video though). This also happens when I play a game, it just completely stops (and sometimes the sound repeats itself over and over again) and I have to wait until it becomes responsive again. Now this is a problem I've had recently: It doesn't completely shutdown either. When I hit the shut down button and go to bed, I'll wake up in the morning and it still has the blue "Shutting down..." screen. So I have to forcefully shut it down by holding down the power button for 3 seconds.[CODE]

I try to power down (Shut down) my Win 7 PC and it (screen) goes dark but fans are still running. Its like it's only half off. I had this problem once before just after my change from 32 bit to 64 bit OS. Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I researched and after much digging I found the answer. However , as with any fresh install , upgrades abound and recently , the same problem reared its ugly head once again. The problem is , I cant seem to locate the solution this time ! I seem to remember a driver or a hotfix or just a particular ms upgrade.

win 7 x64, gigabyte motherboard GA-MA74GMT-S2, AMD PHENOM XII 550 - AMD PHENOM XII B50, DDR3 6 GB RAM, stock cooling, ASUS ati hd5450
I over clocked my cpu from dual core to quad core but even after complete shut down by the window, cpu fan is working, cabinet LED is still on, motherboard LED is on as there is a current.
Which is totaly unusual as everything switches off automaticaly after complete shutdown in normal cpu condition.

Been having shutdown issues for the last several weeks following some issues i was having with an SSD drive and after a few hours of some hard soul serching in safe mode boots, i figured out that its an Nvidia driver that stops the machine from powering down after i hit the shutdown on Windows 7, i've tried reinstalling old drivers as well as the latest ones but i still get the same issue, it shuts down and powers off just fine NO PROBLEM!!! when i uninstall the nvidia drivers, but the second i load them back into windows i get the same problem again, i've been trying to sort this bloody mess out for 2 weeks or more, and finally got it pined to the nvidia drivers.
Spec is : Phenom II X6 1080XT / 8GB DDR3 1333 / 2 EVGA GTX 560 Ti's in SLi mode/ 1TB 7200RPM HDD / ASUS M4N75TD Motherboard / BFG 1000WATT PSU / Using Antec DF-85 case
I've done bios settings and cleared the bios completely, nothing is overclocked, everything is at factory defualts, i've tried updating the bios , and i've also disabled the SLI mode and nothing effected it, and also done several install of windows. One last thing, it shurts down and turns off perfectly fine in safe mode.
The IEE host bus controller in device manager tweak doesn't work, it doesn't matter if the power saving box is checked or not.

I just built my first gaming PC and I screwed up big time. I bought a copy of winxp pro 32bit for it and I got 8 gigs of RAM installed. Come to find out, winxp pro 32 bit can only access like 4 gigs of the RAM. Bios is showing 8 gigs, windows xp 32 bit is only showing 3 gig of RAM (presumably, the video card is using the other 1 gig of the 4 gigs that XP 32 bit recognizes).I just wanted to stick with the old all-to-familiar WinXP pro. I still would rather run WinXP pro 64 bit if it will recognize the 8 gigs of RAM I have installed. I'm stuck in my ways. It's an MSI MoBo that supports 8 gigs of dual channel DDR3 1333mhz RAM. And that's exactly what I have installed, 8 gigs of DDR3 1333mhz RAM (Patriot brand PC10666).What is the best operating system with the fewest bugs? Win7 pro 64 bit or WinXP pro 64 bit? I don't want to make another costly mistake. I wanted to keep my costs down trying to make a mid-level gaming PC, but I guess keeping the cost down is shot to hell now. I gotta get a 64 bit OS now. I'm not gonna waste that RAM. And I ain't sendin it back to Tiger Direct.

Upon downloading a key finder software, I noted that the product key has "Trial" indicated (in spaces 6-10). Could this be a result of not activating within 30 days? My service protection is enabled. I have been getting BSODs here and there ever since I put this computer together in August 2010. It's become intolerable and I am just so sick of it...I am running full retail Home Premium x64 on this platform:MSI 890GXM-G65 mainboardAMD Phenom II X4 BE 965 Deneb4x OCZ AMD Black Edition RAM 2GB (clocked at 1066 with 7-7-7-21 timings (factory default)) 8GB totalXFX 650W PSU*XFX 5850 GPU (HD-585X-ZNFC, 725mhz/1GB DDR5)1TB WDC HDD*Graphics card recently crapped out, system would no longer POST with it hooked in. Running on an ancient PNY NVIDIA 7600GT back-up...The Windows installation is approximately 7 months old, I have tried reinstalling three times to remedy the situation to no avail. I gave up on re-installation as a cure. The most common cause seems to be simply being IDLE. As in, I'm not even at the chair interacting with the computer.
Firefox (up-to-date) crashes ALL THE TIME - usually having to do with Flash Player corruption. Reinstalled Flash, reinstalled FF. No difference. IE9 is a bit more stable but also crashes (albeit not fully, so I use it more often than FF).I don't have dump files that reference it but atikmpag.sys was often the "culprit" of many of my BSODs prior to the card crapping the bed. In fact it even caused a crash after the card was replaced with the old 7600GT, at which point I uninstalled everything ATI. There hasn't been a BSOD pointing to it since.
I get all kinds of Flash corruption, pixelation, and lag when a BSOD is imminent - some of the time. 3D gaming however, is typically stable. Skyrim for instance, ran well until the GPU misfortune.I have tried lots of RAM manipulation (Timings, Voltage, whatever) and it just makes things worse when I stray away from the factory defaults. I believe there is a limitation with my series of CPU in using 4 DIMMS - the memory controller can't handle speed above 800mhz or 1066mhz or something. I forget exactly what. But I am using 4 modules, so I have gone by what I read and this fixed ATI driver hang-ups (hang -> black screen -> "ATI driver stopped responding and has recovered) I was having in a different game a while back (Vindictus).
Windows Memory Diagnostic has never returned a problem with the RAM. Memtest didn't either the last time I tried. Admittedly this was a while ago, but like my title states, I have been having these problems since basically day one of this build.pologies if I have omitted anything that could be of use. I have put this off for a long time and am quite frustrated. I have read about 50 threads with similar BSOD error codes and still haven't gotten anything useful so maybe my problem needs a specific

at seemingly random intervals, I'll "wake up" my computer only to find its date/time entry is suddenly same date, same time, but YEAR 7011.Not too surprisingly, things don't work right when the computer year is that far off-- which is usually what tips me off that it's happened yet again. AOL may not work, or I may bet alerts that computer protection is "no longer valid" (well gee, 5000 years from now, not surprised). WHAT causes these repeated changes of the computer's year setting?

Ever since then the Boot and Shutdown times have increased to over 15 minutes. I have run the msconfig unticking all but the antivirus (Kaspersky) and it still takes >15 min to boot and Shutdown. Is there something I can do before I decide to reinstall Windows &. (I dont have a install disk.) The software came with the Computer and I have the OEM code (Bought at Best Buy)

I have two windows updates that keep failing. When i go to shutdown my computer I always have an update icon attached to the shutdown key. The download is always 1of1. Then when i reboot, the update icon is still there. I'm thinking since the two updates are failing, it has something to do with the 1of1 update not downloading properly. I went to windows update to check for new updates, and the only one is the two that keep failing. My computer just blue screened on shutdown today, winch got me thinking i really need to fix this.

Im not sure if this is in the right category, but I think it could be Windows 7 related. My Powersupply died the other day so I purchased a new one and all was fine, except when I shutdown it either freezes or carries on for what seems like forever. The only thing is that on bootup my DVD Drive and SSD have changed ports so my dvd drive is now device00 and my SSD001.

i built my new pc a couple of weeks ago, with mostly new parts (kept my psu and hdd). my pc keeps on completely freezing (no audio, can't move the mouse), forcing me to force shutdown and turn it back on again. sometimes after turning it off it works fine, other times it freezes again at any point during startup (once during bios, sometimes during windows setup, and sometimes minutes after it is fully started). the problem is, this freezing happens randomly. so far it's occurred while the system was idle, while watching a Internet video, and while opening google chrome. what is weird is how it rarely happens during gaming. i played 6 hours straight of bad company 2 on max settings with no problems. i've also played about 10 hours of the witcher this week and have only had it freeze once. sometimes the pc will freeze multiple times in a day, and sometimes it will only freeze a few times a week.i've run memtest 86 and memtest86+ when i initally bought the computer, and it found no problems. i ran these tests again two days ago and it still found no problems. i also ran a couple of stress tests (using prime96) and the pc never crashed when it was under full load. when i use speedfan, my system is normally 29c, my cpu is 36c, my video card is 40c, and the "core" is 35c. the only thing it has a problem with is something called "aux" which changes from anywhere between 40c and 130c. i read on the internet that it shouldn't matter, but... that's what it is.i've also checked the error logs, and so far i can't really find anything that corresponds to the times that is freezing. i've also ran my computer with all the startup items turned off, but it also froze that way too.
i've messed with ram timings, and gskill says they should be set to 9-9-9-24-2n with a voltage of 1.5. i've done that in the mobo, with the exception of "2n" which i don't really understand.at the recommendation of someone else, i've started running my pc with only one stick of ram at a time. i just tried the first stick yesterday in the first slot, and it froze at the very end of the day (after i had already played the witcher and watched a movie on it).it was suggested to me that i run memtest with one stick in it at a time (which i haven't done yet). is that really necessary? i was under the impression that memtest simply found errors on all the sticks, if there were any.finally, as just a side note, i built my brother a pc very similar to mine (everything except the case and the hdd are the same) and he has had no problems with his yet, telling me that everything is physically compatible and that the memory timings must be right.

But after my last return from Japanese as Display Language to English, I find that Windows Explorer shows date information in Japanese, and IE uses Japanese as its language. Yet the Desktop icons have English legends, and the Start menu is in English. So there is a mixture of languages. Is there a way to eliminate Japanese completely? Should I uninstall the Language Packs?
