Windows 7 Shutdown Doesn't Turn Off PC
Jul 20, 2011
Been having shutdown issues for the last several weeks following some issues i was having with an SSD drive and after a few hours of some hard soul serching in safe mode boots, i figured out that its an Nvidia driver that stops the machine from powering down after i hit the shutdown on Windows 7, i've tried reinstalling old drivers as well as the latest ones but i still get the same issue, it shuts down and powers off just fine NO PROBLEM!!! when i uninstall the nvidia drivers, but the second i load them back into windows i get the same problem again, i've been trying to sort this bloody mess out for 2 weeks or more, and finally got it pined to the nvidia drivers.
Spec is : Phenom II X6 1080XT / 8GB DDR3 1333 / 2 EVGA GTX 560 Ti's in SLi mode/ 1TB 7200RPM HDD / ASUS M4N75TD Motherboard / BFG 1000WATT PSU / Using Antec DF-85 case
I've done bios settings and cleared the bios completely, nothing is overclocked, everything is at factory defualts, i've tried updating the bios , and i've also disabled the SLI mode and nothing effected it, and also done several install of windows. One last thing, it shurts down and turns off perfectly fine in safe mode.
The IEE host bus controller in device manager tweak doesn't work, it doesn't matter if the power saving box is checked or not.

I recently installed GTX670 SLI in my machine and run some benchmarks to test it is all working.Afterwards, I did a clean format complete re-install with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 with updates. It appears now when I shut down my machine, windows turns off the display and seems to shut down but does NOT turn off the fans/LEDs on my computer.I then re-installed a clean windows 7, installed my drivers ONLY (no windows updates) and it shuts down/turns the computer off fine.

I try to power down (Shut down) my Win 7 PC and it (screen) goes dark but fans are still running. Its like it's only half off. I had this problem once before just after my change from 32 bit to 64 bit OS. Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I researched and after much digging I found the answer. However , as with any fresh install , upgrades abound and recently , the same problem reared its ugly head once again. The problem is , I cant seem to locate the solution this time ! I seem to remember a driver or a hotfix or just a particular ms upgrade.

my mothers laptop (HP-2133 *Large Battery*) just stopped working. There have happened a couple of things, so I'll tell it one by one:- My mother turned on (From hibernation) her laptop one day, and the screen was green.:My thoughts: I thought that it might be the graphics card that had some kind of error on start up, so I just turned it off and on again. Then it ran like it used to. A few hours later the laptop had these random freezes, which made "Force-shutdown" the only possible way of rebooting.:My thoughts: I thought that this was perhaps a virus, but I never got the chance to run our Anti-virus (Kaspersky Antivirus PRO)- Now (two days later), when she/I tries/try to turn on the laptop, nothing happens... The laptop powers on, but doesn't actually run the HDD, or even the motherboard for that matter (Doesn't run the BIOS).
:My thoughts: I noticed that the only light that's on, is the power-light, (The HDD doesn't even blink). I also noticed that the screen doesn't even turn on, but the fans actually run (Most likely because the laptop is powered on)So I can imagine that the motherboard is dead, and in these couple of days, it's shown me that this is it's last days to live. But before I rip it apart and save the value parts, and scrap the rest, I would like to ask you guys for your opinion..

So Windows seems to be very unresponsive, slow, and buggy on my computer I've had for about 3 years now. It's done this the entire time I've had butince school has started it's really pissing me off when I'm trying to get homework done.Anyway, it has a very slow start up process, and during this the taskbar doesn't respond nor does the desktop and other things. Then at random intervals it does exactly this (that isn't my video though). This also happens when I play a game, it just completely stops (and sometimes the sound repeats itself over and over again) and I have to wait until it becomes responsive again. Now this is a problem I've had recently: It doesn't completely shutdown either. When I hit the shut down button and go to bed, I'll wake up in the morning and it still has the blue "Shutting down..." screen. So I have to forcefully shut it down by holding down the power button for 3 seconds.[CODE]

My laptop is an MSI Gx660, running windows 7 64bit with 12gb ram.The laptop is only 1-2months old and My harddisk has very little files with about 205gb free on the C drive.
After using for a long period of time like 6-7hours, I would usually put my laptop into hibernate mode. When I click hibernate, the screen turns black but even after 20mins the power button including wifi and other lights doesnt go off, which I have to force shutdown by holding the power button. Even sleeping the laptop after 6-7hours does the same issue, unable to go to sleep(indicated by the blinking power button)
The wierd thing is that if I use the laptop for about 2 hours or less, I am able to fully hibernate or sleep, which I tested a few times.

I have recently notice that my laptop has the following issues:- Doesn't follow power option settings (shutting off the monitor, go to sleep on timeout, etc)- Doesn't turn on the screen saver. Previewing the screensaver turns it off in about a second (even if my hands are off the mouse/keyboard).- Windows 7 Projector Connection screen (WinKey+P) goes away after a second or so after bringing it up- Some windows open in background (for example, Picasa image viewer opens windowed in the background instead of fullscreen in front as it used to) From what I understand based on some light Googling and vague leads, there is some sort of interrupt happening that makes the OS think it is being actively used. Unfortunately I am not sure how to pinpoint and solve the issue from here on, so therefore I turn to this forum for help. Some notes about stuff I tried and know about this issue:- This must have happened in the past week or two. I do not recall installing any new software and the only updates that passed my memory were Windows Updates.- Checking Task Manager doesn't reveal any suspicious processes to me.- Some sources suggested this could be a faulty Logitech driver. I own a Logitech mouse and keyboard combo.
Something to consider, I guess? Specs:- Windows 7 32b SP 1, up to date- AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58- 2GB RAM- 250GB HDD- ATI Radeon Xpress 1150- Connected devices: LAN, Logitech Alto Connect Notebook Stand, Logitech S520 Keyboard + mouse that goes with that kit, USB external drive, VGA monitor, line-in running into the microphone port to play sound out of the laptop speakers

my monitor exhibited signs of flickering during start-up, but only minor ones and would just stop at the 'Welcome' screen of windows so I didn't give it much thought. Iv'e been using it with the cpu the same time I bought the monitor. But after some time, the flickering got worse. It went from 1-2 second interval flickers to a whole 10 seconds of blackness before it showed anything. Now,Iv'e got a new cpu but still using the old monitor. After a day or so, the monitor exhibited the first symptoms of my first cpu, so I just dismissed it. But after a week, It got a hell worse, before I even start-up my computer, the monitor doesn't show Analog/Digital at the top-left corner of the screen. PLUS my cpu keeps restarting after I pushed the ON button after 10 seconds or so. Is the monitor responsible for the restart and what could be the reason for the flickering?

When I click the "Shut Down" button within windows, the computer will restart and not shut down.
When I physically HOLD DOWN the "Shut Down" button on the computer case, the PC restarts.
I do not have any BSOD's. I do have a memory dump file that say's to be 470,628KB in size but I can't open it.
I have tried disabling my overclock and I have left my overclock on and it DOES NOT make a difference. When I press the "Shut Down" it restarts. When I hold the "Shut Down" button down on my case, it also only restarts.
I would like to add that my motherboard has "Shut Down" button as well and a "Restart" button on the Motherboard, when I hold the "Shut Down" button it also restarts.
I was starting to think about the small 30 Gauge wires that have the super small headers, you know the ones that go to the bottom right of the MOBO, I was thinking perhaps that I got those mixed up in different spots.
But that doesnt logically explain or solve the problem I have from shutting down from within windows, does it?

I have a ASUS Laptop with Intel I3 processer and Windows 7 Home Premium. I recently had a forced shutdown during a Windows upgrade session. Ever since then the Boot and Shutdown times have increased to over 15 minutes. I have run the msconfig unticking all but the antivirus (Kaspersky) and it still takes >15 min to boot and Shutdown. Is there something I can do before I decide to reinstall Windows &. (I dont have a install disk.) The software came with the Computer and I have the OEM code (Bought at Best Buy)

I have two windows updates that keep failing. When i go to shutdown my computer I always have an update icon attached to the shutdown key. The download is always 1of1. Then when i reboot, the update icon is still there. I'm thinking since the two updates are failing, it has something to do with the 1of1 update not downloading properly. I went to windows update to check for new updates, and the only one is the two that keep failing. My computer just blue screened on shutdown today, winch got me thinking i really need to fix this.

Im not sure if this is in the right category, but I think it could be Windows 7 related. My Powersupply died the other day so I purchased a new one and all was fine, except when I shutdown it either freezes or carries on for what seems like forever. The only thing is that on bootup my DVD Drive and SSD have changed ports so my dvd drive is now device00 and my SSD001.

I recently installed windows 7 64-bit ultimate using a clean install since i had windows xp. Everything installed ok. The problem I'm having is that when i shut down, it automatically restarts instead of shutting down. It runs through the BIOS and POSTS as if i restarted. There are no errors listed when it restarts. It's as if i pressed restart instead of shutdown. The only way i can turn off my computer is when i hold down my power button for 3 seconds.

I recently bought an Alienware m17x and it keeps shutting down randomly. I tried reinstalling a fresh version of windows just to be sure and reupdating all of the drivers to match my computer's needs. (via windows update and Driver Genius)It never shuts down randomly in safe mode though, so it tells me: (Correct me if I'm wrong)
1) It's not one of the absolutely critical files causing it, since the files/drivers work without shutting down in safe mode
2) It's not an overheating problem since it doesn't shut down randomly in safe mode
3) Probably not a problem with the battery, or else it would shut down in safe mode too. (Right?)
I still have a 1 year warrenty with Alienware/Dell but I'd rather not wait several weeks (send/receive, fix, send back which takes a while b/c shipping takes atleast a week each way) for them to receive it, fix it, and send it back. (I'd prefer to use that as a last resort because I use/need my computer daily)Dell does have a BIOS flasher for Alienware m17x which I have not tried yet?

-- Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)

[CODE]My computer is randomly shutting down power then restarts on it's own. I have tried to find a common function that might be causing this to happen. But have not found any. At first I thought it was th eIE since the shutdown always occurred while surfing th eInternet. But, I have had it shutdown once not being on th eInternet (maybe 99 to 98% while on the internet). The computer will run for days, weeks and even months before it shows up again. I have replaced the Power supply, the video card with one just like it, and rearranged the memory (3 x 2g) OCZ GoldI have run the memory test with Windows 7 and no problems were found. Where do I go from here? I have never seen the temparature exceed 42 C. The Vcore is 0.94, +3.3v is 3.33, +5 is 5.19, +12v is 12.25, CPU temp 33 C, and MB is 30C as I write this message
