View 2 Replies View Relatedi installed a sata controller because the sata controller on the motherboard went out. I can easily install ubuntu but when i try installing win 7 it asks for a cdrom driver, when i try booting from usb it asks for hdd driver.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased an Iomega 1TB external hard drive to back up my files from my Laptop (Toshiba satellite) because it has been constantly showing hard drive failure warnings and messages telling me to back up my files. When I connected the hard drive the first time, it worked fine and I was able to access it, but didn't use it for anything at the time. The next time I used it, however, the usual "New device" sound didn't play and the hard drive didn't show up in the file browser. I then looked up the issue to find that it is a common problem where the device hasn't been assigned a drive letter. I went to the Disk Manager to fix the issue but the device was not in the list of connected devices.The problem seems to be with my computer because it works fine on my brother's computer and has no issues.Additionally, I have been having problems with Windows Update being stuck on "Downloading 0%" and have had to use the system restore several times when getting stuck on an update message on startup. I think that this may be the cause of the problem (and yes, I have turned on the hard drive).

I have since removed my old hard drive but am still asked to select one to boot from even though there is now only one connected. I have windows 7 and office on my laptop and I want it on my desktop pc. There isn't close to 64gb of info on my laptop so it should be fine even though the hard drive says I have 160gb. It is all free space except for those programs.

I have been trying to get this system ready to do extensive HD video editing and multimedia work so thumbnails are critical to sorting out 1000's of clips. Vista just doesnt show thumbnails. I have been waiting years for Windows 7.
This system is fast. Boot drive reads at over 160MB/s sec. The 2 Raid 5 arrays can copy to each other at 250MB/s plus (for multi GB files). Interesting HDTach 3.0.1 only shows 160MB's for the Highpoint array.
They will have to fix their software..
In the last few weeks the system had become very flakey - Windows 7 x64 & vista x64 system -video thumbnail display & codec errors etc, windows explorer hangs, system corruption, bad software & codecs.
The boot manager from the latest (Paragon i think) partition manager for windows 7 got stuck on resize partition and it doesnt time out. I want my pc to be always on for remote access..
Anyway the system finally crashed. I lost one of the Raid0 boot disk array IDs when I tried to delete the boot manager. One disk offline and array gone. 60 hours, 400G of newly imported video from 8mm tapes..
So I decided on clean install just windows 7 after I recovered the data on the raid array.
To that end I removed all the other disks, took a single clean disk and installed vista on it.
Then I went to Bios and deleted the GigaRaid array and recreated it with the original 2 disks.
Changed the boot order in Bios to the first Sata.
Back into windows, initialise the GigaRaid array in windows disk management -Do not partition or format it. Load GetBackDataNTFS and
scan and copy all of the data back to the spare space on the new boot disk.
When I was totally happy I had everything back I loaded Windows Disk management and partitioned the GigaRaid into 250G and 1200G. Formatted the only the 1200G and copied on all of the drivers..
I then shutdown and removed the Vista hard disk and restarted with the Windows 7 DVD. Loaded the Gigaraid drivers and proceded to install Windows 7.
On first reboot, error 80xxxx .
Back to setup and disk management. Delete the new 250G partition and let Install do its stuff. So it creates a 100MB "system" as the first partition then 260G for the C drive and installs itself.
Whoo hoooo! it works.
I shutdown and add the GPT array and the single Roms drive.
Into Bios to set the boot to the Scsii Gigaraid & restart and the dynamic array and Roms disk is there.
Shutdown and install the RocketRaid Card with its 5 disks attached.
Back to bios to set Boot to Scsii Gigaraid.
It always puts Sata 0 first.
Or Scsii 0_1 (the RocketRaid).
Boot back into windows and everything is where it should be.
Clean and fast too. Install all of the software I need.
Now I have a nice system. Time to copy the video I recovered onto the Raid5 array.
So I plug the sata cable into the disk and go into the Highpoint management to scan the disk. Come up ok and is visible in windows.
I copy the data over to the raid.
The I decide to see it the computer will reboot back into windows unattended.. Nope! Screen fills with rubbish that looks like Linux. Says changing boot disk, then stops.
I go back into Bios and reset the boot disk back to Scsii 1_0 (GigaRaid)
Reboot and press F12 for the boot menu. Select the last item - GigaRaid.
Boots back into that Linux looking system (says debian).
I disconnect RocketRaid disk 6, Scsii 0_1 and back to bios and set to Scscii 1_0, Gigaraid, reboot back into windows..
Plug the Rocketraid Scsii 1_0 and reboot - back into Linux?
Question is..
1 What is the purpose of the 100MB that windows installed onto the boot disk.
2 how do i find the boot manager that screws the system when I connect a new drive (including USB key).
3 How do I force the boot to the correct disk array regardless of which drives are installed or not.
4. Is there a boot "something" I can install on every disk to point to Scsii Gigaraid
So, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

So because of that i want to upgrade it to an SSD drive.But I also want to have the same windows thats installed moved over to the new drive. The drives i've looked at all have data migration tools and one comes with norton ghost but i've never had to do something like this before where i didn't have an optical drive and a windows disk for a reinstall so i'm looking for some help here before i order everything and then do something stupid.i don't mind if i have to lose whatever settings and data i might have setup already, but i just want to make sure i have the same windows and the additions it comes with moved over to the new SSD drive.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have tried numerous times on my PC to install Windows 7 onto my Sata Drive to no avail. Yet as soon as I plug in my IDE HD it installs fine.I have unplugged all external peripherals USB and internal Card Reader. Set my Bios ok as it sees both the Hard Drive and DVD fine (Both in the bios and during selection of hard drive during windows 7 installation). Yet when I come to install it, it craps out at a random percentage saying cannot read from source or worse yet it crawls so slow through the percentages (I really don't think Windows 7 should take 6 hours to get to 15%!!) Yet both the hard drive and dvd are fine and the disc works great on my other PC without the sata drive in.
My motherboard is a Biostar G31-M7 TE with latest bios now what is odd is that I recently updated the BIOS to the latest one so does my problem come from here or was it always going to be a problem on this board? Also when I do have Windows 7 installed on the IDE drive when I plug in ther sata drive inside the whole system goes belly up (from freezes when transferring large files to just not seeing the drive)
I have an Alienware M14x R1 with a SSD - Crucial M4 in the main spot and the stock HD in the optical drive. I have never had any issues with any of this stuff before this clean install - and I have done clean installs previously. I also used Parted Magic to Secure Erase my SSD and HD before install.I am experiencing some pretty frustrating problems:
1. I have NO INTERNET CONNECTION (everyone keeps telling me to install drivers...how can I do this without internet connection??)
2. Windows is not recognizing my second hard drive in the optical drive even though it did when I was installing and showed it at the section where you can add new partitions etc
3. My display adpater is not working as I have a 1600x900 screen and I can only go up to 1024x768...
I have a HP Touchsmart IQ500. Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it. I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times). I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly.When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed windows 7 home premium 64 bit, previous OS was Vista home premium 32 bit. My desktop is an HP pavilion d4650y. I have the OS loaded on my main HD which is a SATA.
HD & DVD drive worked perfectly before on vista. I tested both devices on another pc with XP and they work fine. I've triple checked the connections but still the devices are not recognized by Windows 7. I've also tried renaming the HD & changing the drive letter, but still no luck.
Both drives are connected to a PCI E card, and are set to cable select, on separate cables. In the BIOS both drives show up. In disk management they do not show up at all.
My HD is a western digital 250 gb EIDE, and the DVD drive is a IDE Pioneer DVD burner (secondary disc drive).
I am using an external USB combo drive, now I decided to take out the drives and have them permanently plugged inside my system through sata. None of the hard drives are seen in the bios or windows 7 x64 yet when I plug them into my usb combo external they show straight away. I know it cant be a setting as I already have a couple of sata drives internally that work fine. Why are these two drives that have been sat in a usb external not being seen at all when plugged internally on the motherboard?

I have a USB connected SATA drive bay that I use for imaging the drives, and I am wondering if there is a way to configure it automatically treat that device as connected instead of shared.
