I backup my files using windows backup to an external hard disk. But the backup size is smaller than the selected files. The files that are selected to be backed up are 30-40 GB, and the size of the backup shows it is only 3.7 GB. Why is this. It says its 3.7 both in the control panel for windows backup, and when looking at properties on the backup folder.
looking to take advantage of the built-in backup that comes with Windows 7.
My main drive is a 640GB drive, and I have a 500GB drive that I can use as my backup drive.
Now, because my main drive is bigger than my backup, does that mean I can't do a full backup to the 500gb disk?
I won't use near 500GB of the 640GB on the main drive, so will it allow me to do a full systme image backup as long as my main drive used size is less than the size of my backup drive?
Running weekly backups through the Task Scheduler; periodic checks always show task completed successfully; discovered that "completed successfully" doesn't necessarily mean "completed correctly"; checked in Control Panel >> Backup/Restore and discovered that Windows reports my last 4 backups are not complete...there were files missing. Missing files belong to a hidden user account created for irrelevant purpose. Hero computer tech finds/edits registry to remove hidden account and backups now runs correctly.Problem: I now have 4 backup files that are incorrect and I don't know if that will cause any problems if I forget about their condition and choose to back up to one of them in the future.
Besides the native program in windows 7, what's a trust worthy good program to backup selected folders like Documents, Pictures, and other random folders I want to backup..
Maybe even something that does it incremental, so say if I connect it every sunday it only backs up changes in the folders and doesn't need to re do everything so that it won't need to re backup my 600GB movies folder, etc because it won't have any changes.
how to solve before mentioned issue......i am trying to install aethros n/w adapter for my hp-g60 127nr notebook on Windows 7 platform...i have downloaded the .inf file but unable to install it..
I would like to prevent Explorer from scrolling a folder's contents to focus on a selected file or folder. Like, if I have a folder open with quite a few files in it and the file I want to double click to open is on the third row I'll go to double click but with the first click Explorer has scrolled along and the second click lands on a completely different file.
Just wondering if it's possible to make Windows backup do it in another place besides the root of another drive. It's really annoying seeing those files all the time,so I move them to a folder anyways.. which ocfourse windows fails to see then, but since I dont have a schedueled backup it's ok for now... Just need the one master backup for now, and if i add something or change something I move the files back to root to do that.
One of my drives in raid0 crashed and fortunately I had windows 7 x64 backup activated and running daily. After recreating the array with the remaining drives, I tried to restore from the external usb drive but it didn't work. Apparently the problem is that I had been running "file backup" and not "image backup". Probably because when I configured backup for the first time, it asked to back up all my drives which was not possible and not needed so didn't check the image backup button.
Now the backup set is visible only from within windows (I set Windows 7 again up) but NOT from the restore part of Windows 7 setup / recovery disk. Files inside the backup set are not .vhd but zipfiles. All my c: drive files actually ARE inside the backup set, but running restore will restore all the crap folders (like c: vidia) except from the system folders like c:windows, c:program files (and x86), c:programdata etc.
Any way to restore these? I am thinking of the possibility of somehow restoring all the files and running windows repair on top of this to actually make c:drive bootable again. My users folder is not affected as I had moved it to d: but this presents the additional challenge of being able to actually make the system see the users folder....
Does anyone know how you can backup your personal customizations to the Default File Locations (e.g., my *.txt isn't assocated with Notepad, but Notepad2).
I used to run 2 WD Caviar Black 1TB each, I decided to get a 128gb Intel SSD, put the other 2 WD drives over to SATA port 2 and 3 with SSD on port 1. I did not format the WD drives since they both have data on it, port 2 WD still has Windows 7 installation on it.
When I started up after installing SSD, I went to BIOS to ensure everything is in working order, I noticed only 2 drives are detected, the SSD and WD on port 3. Tried several things like check connection, power connection, switched SATA cables, switched ports. Still no difference.
I went ahead and installed Windows 7 on SSD, disk manager does not detect WD on port 2.
Is it because that WD on port 2 still has windows installation files? How can I fix this? I have critical data on there that I need to access to.
I want to backup my PC's data files to an external HD using Windows 7 backup & restore utility. If I use the recommended default option that also includes a back mirror of Windows 7 will the PC automatically backup only New data since the backup at the scheduled option chosen? Will the backed up files on the backup drive appear as windows file folders (My Pictures, My Documents etc.) or be in an encoded file format?
I have a 5900 RPM 1T Hard drive currently running my O.S and a few other programs, but it has gotten to the point where I would like to speed up the boot time and running certain applications. I wam looking at getting a SSD that at most will have 124GB of storrage space. I tried ghosting one hard drive to a smaller faster hard drive on my laptop so I know that it won't work but I have heard some people talking that their is a way to make the computer think that all the free space on the hard drive is gone and the hard drive is only as big as how much space is actually taken up.
W7 x64 ult OS. Something went wrong. My system will no longer boot - the error message lists registry corrupt. I am 99% sure it is not a virus.I have another drive with a W7 system on it in the same box and I can boot from that.It is just a basic clean install test system, but I can access all the drives. Is there a backup registry file I can use to replace the corrupt one........and which files are the registry? Is there anything else to do to recover othere than a clean install?I can't do a repair install because it has to boot to the system first.Unless. Can I do a repair install on the bad drive from a boot to the good drive?
i have an xp backup bkf i need to get some files from but im on a win 7 home premium latop (x64) and when i downloaded the restore utility from MS it wont allow to install it due to no "turn on removable storage" option in the programs . i need help because MS leads me in circles and these files are really important!
I have a duplicate image of my windows 7 system. I want to move my windows 7 system off from my 2TB drive on to a smaller 500GB drive instead. I used an imaging program to duplicate the drive contents onto the 500GB drive. My question now is, is it safe to switch to my 500GB as my primary drive and boot up from it without affecting my Windows 7 activation status, or do I need to de-activate it first on the 2TB drive then re-activate on the 500GB drive?
I have Windows 7 os and an Epson Stylus SX415.I can print perfectly in A4, but when I try to print a page smaller than A4 ie: A5, A6 and labels, the printed area does not fit the paper properly - it is too big.And 'shrink to fit' does not work to make it fit the page. I have tried running MS troubleshooter, updating the latest drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling software and driver.
I experience a serious reoccurring issue with Windows 7 window management. It happens 1 in 5 times when logging in after locking the screen (or putting the machine to standby).
Windows are restricted to a part of the whole desktop. Please note that the explorer window in the attached picture is maximized, but not occupying the whole desktop as expected! (In fact I can move windows to the right side, but not maximize to it. Also when moving windows there, it snaps *not* to the edge of the screen but to to the same wrong line where the edge of the maximized window is.)
What is this? What causes this? How can I disable this? Only restart helps by now..
I have big file (133Gb) backup file on my hard drive and I wanted to move this to external hard drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive). When I tried it to move or copy to the external I've got message: Error 0x8007045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. I was looking online for some help and I found some advice that I have to make chkdsk in cmd mode but when I tried I've got message: "Chkdsk" is not recognized as a internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I don't know how to solve this problem. Can someone help me? My OS is win 7 Enterprise x86.
I am trying to determine what the use of the backup section of the Back up and Restore screen is for. Is it just for doing file backup or is it intended to be used also for Full System Image backups also?
I make use of the Windows 7 Backup and Restore programs.
Automatically everyday a backup is scheduled. This backup is configured to contain all user files and a system image.
Now I have tried to find the system image, but I don't know what file extension the image backup should have.
In my backup folder, below, only two .VHD files are present, and a bunch of XML Documents. X:\WindowsImageBackup\XXXX\Backup 2009-11-04 160010
Can someone explain me in which files the backup and restore programs save the backups? Also I like to know where I should look for, to know for sure my backup is done successfully.
Can anyone tell how or if its possible to change the system font to a smaller size than is available at: Control panel / Appearance and Personalization / display..I got a big new monitor where Windows 7 windows now display with a larger font than I need for visibility.I've set the radio button for small and even under Custom DPI setting. It will not let me set anything under 100%.It now shows: 9 point Segoe UI at 96 pixels per inch.I'd probably like 8 point or even 7 point. So, is there anyway to make the fonts smaller beyond those settings
Can I use easy file transfer from a hard drive back up image of XP? I can mount the image on my win 7 computer. Can easy file transfer pull the user profiles, data, pics, music, doc, etc from a mounted image in the same computer? The image is no longer restorable to any computer.
So I am trying to create a batch file that will copy certain folders from the My Documents and Program Files 86 folders. Of course these are protected. I can make a batch file and use robocopy to copy other files just fine. How can I set admin privileges? Or whatever it is I need to do to make it work? I am using group policy editor to run the bat file on shutdown.
Example:
Robocopy C:Folder D:Folder
that works fine...but when I try copying files out of Program Files x86 or My Documents the batch fails
I have a Win 7 64-bit and yesterday, I got the black screen of death on boot. Black screen, blinking cursor right after I boot. I can access the Samsung recovery menu. I figured I'd just backup my data and do system restore or clean reinstall. After hours of backup, I looked to see the details on a popup dialogue and apparently, nothing was backed up because it was unable to access the files on my C: drive and transfer onto an external hard drive. I also tried to backup an image, but that also fails.
I have just created a batch file to backup a few things on my machine, the thing is the batch file has a menu in it and i was wondering if i was to set the batch file to run under task scheduler say once a week is there a way i can get it to excute through the menu of the batch file? if not when the task scheduler runs it, it will just stay a point waiting for me to press enter.
Is there a way I can create a batch file so de-fragment my hard drive, once that has finished, backup to an external hard drive, and then one that has finished shut down the PC?
I have tried a few backup programs but I'm trying to find out the best way of copying around 500gb of files and keeping all the dates, attributes and security permissions intact?
