I would like to prevent Explorer from scrolling a folder's contents to focus on a selected file or folder. Like, if I have a folder open with quite a few files in it and the file I want to double click to open is on the third row I'll go to double click but with the first click Explorer has scrolled along and the second click lands on a completely different file.
View 9 RepliesThis has been a pet peeve of mine on Win7 ever since I upgraded months ago.
I'm real big on using Windows Explorer to navigate around my drives, looking at files, photos, movies, whatever. There are two things that the folder list, on the left side of the screen, does differently from it's XP predecessor that bug me:
1) It doesn't auto-expand a folder when I click on it. I have to double-click. Years upon years of doing things one way, and they suddenly change it.
2) This is the one I'm posting about... As I'm browsing down the list on the left, burrowing into sub-folder after sub-folder using the arrows.. right as I'm about to click on a folder that I want to view.. Suddenly the list will SNAP back to the top of the page as if it still thinks I want to be looking at whatever other folder I used to be in (usually the default Libraries folder). So I'll sit there and flip my mouse wheel a few times to get back to where I was.. and it'll SNAP BACK TO THE TOP AGAIN. It also happens when I've selected a particular folder, but I'm trying to navigate to one of the many sub-folders. It'll SNAP back up without warning, putting the root folder that I've selected at the very bottom of the screen, forcing me to scroll down. Again. Also happens when I'm trying to use Explorer to open a file from inside of a program.. File>Open, search, scroll, SNAP, scroll, SNAP, scroll, STOP IT, scroll, there it is. Frankly, it's pissing me off.
If there's one thing that bugs me the most about computers these days, it's when they try to do something "helpful" that I honestly don't want it to do. I know better than Windows what I'm trying to do when I'm using this computer. I am not the AOL-using end user that doesn't know what he's doing.. Technical Support? Yeah, been there, done that.. now I train tech support.. believe me, I know what I'm doing.
Is there some option somewhere to tell Windows to leave Explorer the hell alone when I'm browsing my drives? Get it to play the way I want it to play?
Is there a way to stop selected applications or services from starting up with Windows? Is there a list of such items that can be safely disabled?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThere is one specific folder in the Documents library, which when opened directly (like from a shortcut on the dekstop) only shows "corrupted" files with unusable strings for all file names and extensions.However, when opened in tree view, the files appear as they should. So at least it's reassuring that the folder contents are still there and can properly be read and changed. But the issue is still inconvenient and worrisome.I have already tried chkdsk /f on the partition and even mirrored the whole volume to a new harddrive, but that didn't help. I also tried copying the whole folder to another location, it shows up just fine that way as well.

Some of them open with the "Name" column selected, so the arrow keys don't initially scroll through the items in the folder.
I know this is very specific, but there HAS GOT to be a way to define what it opens to by default... especially since some of my folders default to the list of items within the folder.

The files that are selected to be backed up are 30-40 GB, and the size of the backup shows it is only 3.7 GB. Why is this. I recently started having a problem with my PC. It would randomly put focus on a window that I am not currently using. An example is if I have my browser out and I am playing a video on a seperate video player, the video would go out of full screen mode into maximized screen (minimize, exit button on the top right but still takes the full screen) and then it would bring up the browser as if I had clicked it on the taskbar. This problem is trivial and I've dealt with it for several months but I need to rename a significant amount of files for work organization and it is now driving me insane. 8/10 times in the middle of renaming a file, it would just cut out of it, as if I clicked elsewhere. I've tried closing every other window and focus on one window, but it still happens with NO other windows open. I've literally gone on task manager and ended the process of every non-essential program and it still happens.

When you click the folder icon in the navigation area of Windows Explorer (at the top - next to the three arrows), sometimes you get the actual path (I want that to be the default, but since Vista it's not) and sometimes you get a shortcut created in the folder you're in. I never want that behavior. How can I stop it from creating a shortcut (I otherwise WANT to create shortcuts, but never that way.) I installed Win 7 and if i try to open my computer of click on desktop and open up screen resolution etc. I get "Explorer.exe -Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I did a search but could not find anything related to this error in Win 7. I have found some others attached to Win XP but have to do with the installation of some software which prevents access to explorer.exe. When I boot in safe mode this issue does not appear...

No matter what program he's using, as soon as he clicks print, the program stops responding. This even happens if you try to print a test page - Windows Explorer stops responding. It's not printer specific, since this happens before you have the option to select a printer (and he has several, one local printer and a few network printers). I've tried running the troubleshooting tool, but all that does is restart the print spooler, which doesn't stop the problem.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had an unusual happening on my PC. First noticed some instability while trying to open a file from Explorer, could not scroll down to file and it was jittery. Then, every time I tried to enter on an input line, an endless string of zeros were input and I could not overide or erase. Even on Email addressees. I tried a reboot and the zeros appeared on the start up password line and I could not logon. Same thing after complete power cycle. I suspected a stuck key on the keyboard and tried a different keyboard but no help. So I tried a complete restore. At first, it seemed to have the same problem, but somehow, eventually, I got logged on and now everything seems OK. But I don't really know what caused this and fear it could happen again.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I plug in a USB flash drive, it's creating 2 files: file.db and recent.db These database files will open in notepad. File.db seems to be a list of all files on the flash drive and recent.db is a list of recently accessed files on the drive. If I delete them, it just recreates them. I don't see similar files on my C drive.Also, my work computer running Windows 7 Enterprise does not create them when I insert a USB drive.As a matter of privacy, I'd rather not have lists of my files on the drives.

With vista I discovered microsoft had taken this ablity away. So I wrote a batch file which when run as administrator would more or less do the same thing (lots of net stop commands). Now in windows 7 I've written a new one but whenever I run it (as admin of course) a cmd window flashes up for a second & then nothing... all the services are still running

If however I try to modify the search in the same window a popup comes up saying "Application/json" is ready to dowloand a file, where do I want to save it? In fact multiple popups open (could be upto 10). It doesn't matter if you choose to download or not, nothing happens. It just keeps repeating the loop. What is going on and how to stop it? I'm getting no response from either Google or Firfox on this issue.
