Explorer Window Folder Thumbnails Disappearing?
Sep 13, 2012This started suddenly after I turned my desktop pc off before going away for a week. When I came home and turned it back on, it hasn't been "normal" since.When I start my computer, go to my user folder, documents etc., all appears fine. Folders/thumbnails and images within the folder appear as normal.However, if I open (for instance) my "downloads" folder, the folder icons and associated icons are initially displayed as "normal", but I see that the explorer bar (where I see C:/user/downloads, etc) is "computing items" but it never stops. A green "progress bar" SLOWLY moves across that "text window" and then it stays green. As if the pc is having trouble reading what is in the folder.Once that happens, if I back out of the folder and then go back in to it, most of the folder icons/thumbnails/pictures are no longer visible. If I navigate to other folders, it's the same thing; many (but not all) of the folder icons and the thumbnails within are not displayed. Example: in my "user file" the AppData and Tracing folders, the icon is non existant....yet my Contacts, Desktop, Favorites, Documents etc. are shown as standard windows "yellow folders" but not the thumbnails that I have associated with them. Also, the file info (if I highlight a file name) does not appear at the bottom of the explorer window, as it normally would for me.I have run my anti-virus, malwarebytes, which are showing no problems and I have also tried "indexing" but no luck. I do have an external drive that is close to full, but it is disconnected. My C drive is
currently 873gb full of 1.35tb. Recovery partition is 1.63gb free of 13.2gb - which I have never "messed with", though I have previously done 2 "reset to factory settings"
File Arrangement On Burned MP3 CD's
Apr 3, 2012At first I burned an audio CD by dragging mp3 files into the writer. Then discovered that the order was not what I wanted, by track number, but was alphabetical by title. Looking at the File arrangement setting I discovered it was indeed set to [artist]-[title].So I changed it to [track] and then burned another CD. But it ordered them by title again. Next, I cleared the mp3 files from CD writer and dragged them back again thinking this must be done after setting the file arrangement.But upon burning the CD, it still was alphabetically ordered by title.I checked the docs and didn't see any reference to File arrangement.

Aug 30, 2012There is one specific folder in the Documents library, which when opened directly (like from a shortcut on the dekstop) only shows "corrupted" files with unusable strings for all file names and extensions.However, when opened in tree view, the files appear as they should. So at least it's reassuring that the folder contents are still there and can properly be read and changed. But the issue is still inconvenient and worrisome.I have already tried chkdsk /f on the partition and even mirrored the whole volume to a new harddrive, but that didn't help. I also tried copying the whole folder to another location, it shows up just fine that way as well.

Mar 28, 2012After doing some Googling I discovered that it is impossible in Windows 7 to sort files by file extension -- one can only sort by file type, which depends on the file type description. This means that if I want to sort by file type, I need to rename the type descriptions of all my most commonly used files.
In addition, the only place where I can see a file's extension is in the file name itself, and not e.g. in the status bar when a file is selected. In Windows 7, the file type description (not the file extension) is also in the status bar.
In other words, in Windows 7 all files labelled e.g. "Opera Web Document" are sorted as if they have the same file type, regardless of whether they are .html, .htm, .mht, etc. And if I select a file and look at the status bar, the file's type is indicated as "Opera Web Document", without any clue as to the file extension. The only way for me to see the file extension is to increase the width of the "Name" column until the end of the file name becomes visible.
So... my question is:
Is there an easy way to simply rename the file type descriptions? I see that my JPG files are named "JPG File" and my PNG files are named "PNG" file, which is extremely useful. What I now want is to rename my HTML, HTM and MHT files' file types to "HTML File", "HTM File" and "MHT File", and the same would apply to all file types I often use (e.g. DOC, DOCX, XLS, XML, TXT, etc).

Then I would type in administrator and my password to login as an admin, or I would type in my username(Aaron) and my password. One time when I had a friend over and he started up my computer he made a comment about how my login page had one account(named Aaron), without the subtitle of administrator on it. Part1: Is it natural to have one account not as an admin? I want to keep the Aaron account and leave the administrator hidden, and only be able to access it by doing ctrl alt delete. (so far its fine in Win XP)Now on to part 2 of my question. My parents have windows 7 on their laptop, and the one account(called family) is the admin. If I change my OS to windows 7(which I plan on doing), am I still able to switch to the Admin account and leave Aaron as just a regular user? I can't find a way to do it on my laptop or my parents laptop.I just looked again and if I go to Control Panel - user accounts- change the way users log in/offit says Aaron is the admin. why I can still log in as the username administrator?

Jan 17, 2009I installed Win 7 and if i try to open my computer of click on desktop and open up screen resolution etc. I get "Explorer.exe -Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I did a search but could not find anything related to this error in Win 7. I have found some others attached to Win XP but have to do with the installation of some software which prevents access to explorer.exe. When I boot in safe mode this issue does not appear...

I want to open and work with the files within the SAME single application window. (using windows explorer)(like I did with XP).

Which files-- Excel (xls), Microsoft Paint (jpg), Corel Photo-Paint (jpg) >> seems like all applications that can open multiple files. It definitely seems like a change to the O/S. Same apps worked fine in XP.

Can't Resize Window Or Use Aero Snap With Explorer
Jun 1, 2012I was messing around with some custom themes (I know, I know, but I'm pretty familiar with the process and I try to take extra precautions) and for what seems like no reason, I cannot resize Explorer (not IE, the actual file explorer) windows and if I attempt to use Aero Snap, absolutely nothing happens--I can maximize, minimize, etc. though. However, if I use any other program, I can resize and I can do snap, so obviously the problem is only with Windows Explorer. Another weird issue (besides System Restore not doing anything) is that I even installed another custom theme because I figure that whatever files it gave me would probably fix up the explorer issue--and now the theme is installed but I still can't resize or use snap on Explorer.
