How To Change File Name Of Windows 7 User Folder

Feb 1, 2012

i just recieved my computer back from service because my hard drive needed to be replaced. i did not notice this until just now, but my system user name was not changed back to the default "user" after they had finished the service.so my question is, how do I change the file name of my Windows 7 user folder? im talking about the one in C/Users. one is called "public" and the other one - which should have a lock next to it, it the one I want to change. I do not want this file to be called "[tech support person's name]" but either "user" or my own name.I have changed one user name via Control Panel/User Accounts/Change your account name, but it did not rename that file.Is it wise to rename this folder, or am I just stuck with a random person's name as the name of my user file?

I notice in User Accounts it says the name change is for Welcome screen and Start Menu. Why can't we change the User folder name?Is there any option besides to delete account and start over? It is the only account and Admin. Will we lose anything other than files in User folders?

Change USER And Programs File Location?

Aug 21, 2010

I performed a successful clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I installed the OS to a 100gb volume with the intention of using that only for the OS. I, without thinking, allowed the setup to name that drive C. Further, without noticing I allowed the Programs folder and the Users folder to go into this volume. I intended for everything but the OS to go into a large second file named E. My thinking is that the only way that I can fix this situation is to do a new clean install and get it right this time (as much as my limited knowledge will allow. how to rectify this. ntel e6600 Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz Noctua NH-U12P CoolerASUS P5QOCZ Reaper 2X2GB DDR2 800 (PC 6400) EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640 MB WD 250GB GB SATA II Corsair CMPSU 550W

User Profile Folder - Static Folder Instead Of Created By User Signon

Feb 18, 2012

A twist on the creation of user folders on a drive other than C: in Win 7 Ultimate. Does anyone know if one could designate a user folder location such as E:Data instead of using the users name and being a subdirectory of "Users". I am the ONLY one on my computer - and it would seem much easier to look to the top folder in the E drive than clicking thru E:, users, name, documents, project. I fully realize that I can set up shortcuts, but when you are in an application that wants to place a file somewhere else and presents you with an explorer windows it is a pain. The only method I thought of is using redirection with symbolic links.

Windows 7 User Folder Too Big - 27 Gb

May 28, 2012

I've followed the instructions here - Move the Users Directory in Windows 7

My SSD is only about 70Gb, so I want to move the 27-ish Gb User folder (primarily my main User account I use - the admin / guest accounts use next to nothing.

But get a nasty error when re-booting (something like folder C:....Users is unavailable, my Desktop is gone, Outlook doesn't seem to remember it's installed, neither does OfficeTime. Firefox doesn't look anything like I've configured it either - no remembered passwords, toolbar completely different. Is there a quick way I can move the 27Gb User account from my C: SSD drive?

I'm generally very impressed with Windows 7, but it seems to be something that Microsoft have overlooked - the popularity of SSD's, and their limitation in terms of size...

I'll be looking at this after trying a System Restore - User Profile - Change Default Location

Windows 7 User Folder Changed To Public?

Aug 6, 2011

I installed Avast AV when Norton expired. In order to activate the internet security stuff, I had to install the upgraded library file, blah, blah, blah. In order to do this, I had to show hidden folders. Having only recently begun my foray into Windows 7 (coming from XP), I was flying a bit blind. I must have hit the wrong thing. After I was able to see hidden folders, install the library file to Avast and continue on with the reboot, the desktop came up wiped clean of my documents/pics, etc and my C:\Users\Susan folder has disappeared and is now called Public. Next, I thought I may have switched my user from Susan to Public, but I have not.

How To Make Windows 7 User's Folder Private

Apr 29, 2010

In Windows XP there was an option where I could make all my user folders and files in my profile private. In Windows 7 I just cant find the setting anywhere. I have two users on my computer. Me (as administrator) and my girlfriend (as standard user)

Whenever she is doing a search or browse the folders on the computer she gets a lot of results and all my documents and pictures is showing up. No restriction at all. She can delete, edit and so on. I can (obviously) do the same to her files and folders. We both have password protected profiles.

When ever I do a search all her files / mail and documents shows up, because the indexing service is generally at one configuration. All users can search/browse all files in every profile on the computer.

In Windows XP that simply did not happen.

Så where is the setting to make my private folders/files private? if there is a simple way. It seems like Microsoft forgot something otherwise.

I have set the file sharing, net discovery etc on win 7 on and password protection, firewall off. They all have user accounts like pc1, pc2,...pc10 and I have also created the account of the pc I want to access the restricted folder to the pc that shares it.I have set the ownerships on Windows 7 machines too. I can access the folders on XP machines from the Windows 7 successfully. When I try to set a user-restricted shared folder to a Windows 7 pc and access it from XP I fail. It says that I do not have sufficient rights to access the folder, contact the network admin. I can only access to the folder by setting it available to "everyone" or "guest" read/write but that s not what I want.
