Windows 7 Update Crash Getting Recovering Orphaned Files?
Oct 12, 2011
Rebootedmy laptop after latest Windows 7 updates. While closing it started installing latest service pack. Next time I looked at screen it had gone to a black screen scrolling white text. Each line is 'Recovering orphaned file xxxxx into directory xxxxx' has been doinng this continuously for an hour now with 2 or 3 occasional half second pauses. Any ideas what is happening and what I should do next?

So a few hours ago chkdsk was run suddenly I don't know why but I let it run anyways, so once it performed steps 1 & 2 it went on and on about "recovering orphaned files" and what I got from the last few hours was an ever growing list of recovered o-files at least right now this is what I'm getting:
"Recovering orphaned file $RHEOHV3HF.jpg (706013) into directory file 6771"
Over 700,000+ jpgs recovered all named like "$Rxxxxxx.jpg" and as of right now it's still going and I don't think it will stop soon and I don't want it to stop, not now but a long while ago after when it started I recognized some file names that I know what they are and what happens if one comes along to be recovered later? What do all these jpgs mean and why are there so many?

My Hard-drive recently crashed so I purchased a new one but I didn't have my recovery CD's so I went ahead and used my friends Windows 7 "ULTIMATE" disc not realizing that the product key I own is a Windows 7 "Home Premium" key. Now Ultimate is installed on my machine and not authenticated so I purchased the recovery discs for Home Premium from the manufacturer's website but when I boot up the PC with the disc in the CD-ROM it just goes straight to windows and won't recognize or load the disc.

I have just upgraded from 32 bit Vista Home Premium to 64 bit Windows 7 Professional. I did the custom upgrade and have a huge Windows.old folder that contains most of the files from my Vista setup. I forgot to save my Windows Mail files. I'm assuming that they are still in this folder somewhere. Is there a way to recover them to use in Outlook 2003 (its what my company still uses) or Thunderbird? I have tried a few methods to use Windows Mail in Windows 7 but haven't managed to get any of them working.

My husband's laptop had an issue. When that issue occurred our father in law created a stack of back-up discs. My husband had 100s of music CDs loaded on his laptop. so these recovery discs include all that music. He had his computer system restored by Geek squad with windows 7. But we can't figure out how to restore this stack of discs with all of his music. We've searched on windows help with no luck. He puts the disc into the e: drive and the files are visible. We don't simply drag and drop right?

My laptop was fried when it crashed during a BIOS update and I need to get the files off of it. I do not have a SATA adapter but I do have another laptop that I can plug the hard drive into (which isn't corrupted). Obviously I cannot boot the computer up since the Windows installation is going to differ but I was wondering if there was any sort of bootable CD software that I could run to recover files from the drive. The hard drive was running 64 bit Windows 7.

I have three Windows 7 computers, one a laptop and the other two are desktops. The laptop and one desktop are Win 7 Prof. and the remaining desktop is Win 7 Ultimate. All computers are part of my HomeGroup and share is set up for all default libraries, My Documents, My Pictures, My Music and My Videos. On the Win 7 desktop (let's call this computer 1) I had a 4 disk raid array partitioned as C: and D:. I had the system on C: and used D: for data. D: was beginning to be overpopulated. I tried several ways to shirk C: and then expand D: but ran into problems exacerbated by the raid array. So, I decided to copy everything on D: to C:, delete D: and then expand C: for the entire array. With the help of tutorials on this site, I have resolved all the problems this caused on computer 1 with the user folders and can now share everything through the HomeGroup in Win 7 Explorer on all three computers. However, eliminating drive D: on computer 1 and relocating My Documents, My Pictures, My Videos and Downloads have left the HomeGroup on both of the other computers with two orphaned shares. One named My Documents and the other downloads.
On computers 2 and 3 when I click on the shares in Win 7 Explorer, I get network error Windows cannot access \computer1downloads and Windows cannot access \computer1My Documents; Error code 0x80070043, The network name cannot be found. On computers 2 and 3 when I run net share in regular Win 7 I see an orphaned share on D: Share name D$; Resource D:, Remark Default share and what should be the current user share for C: Share Name C$; resource C: and remark Default Share. If I delete the D: share with net share, the share remains in the HomeGroup on computers 2 and 3. One method for resolving this involved using the net share command in safe mode with networking. I am unable to run that command in safe mode with networking due to a dependency error, code 1068 caused by the Security Accounts Manager that will not run in safe mode, error code 1084. On computers 2 and 3 I have looked inomputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetservicesLanmanServerShares and see a share for a printer, one for pint$ print spooler, another for prnproc$ print spooler and finally Users with Path=C:Users. The latter is where I now have all of the shared files stored on C:UsersComputer1My Documents etc. That's a lot of information (I probably left something very important out but I tried to give you what I thought was material) and here is my question; how do I get rid of the two shares in the HomeGroups on computers 2 and 3 that show shares named My Documents and downloads????

I am using windows 7 ultimate.Today I booted the computer and it went to a message that said preparing desktop. After windows loaded the normal software was present, but my customized links were gone and the default background was present. My files that were in my normal user folders were not present, but were later located in the users/username folder. I moved some of these folders to the desktop as that is where they had previously done. In the users folder there were 3 folders (public, my username and whatever the new default user was called). When I restarted the computer everything came back to normal, except the folders of files I had placed on the new desktop. I went into the user folder, but it only had my current user and the public folders. How do I recover the files from the desktop from the random corrupted profile that windows created which I can not manually log into? I searched for the files and the last record of them is linked to my user and says the shortcut is not valid.

I sent my laptop to a family friend for some free hardware repairs, but after discovering that my computer was highly infected with viruses the technician decided to save my data on an external hard drive and then do a reinstall/repartitioning of windows. I haven't installed anything on my laptop since getting it back, but have run testdisk, AOMEI partition assistant, and photorec from my external hard drive in an attempt to recover about 30 Gb of hidden and encrypted data that was housed in my Yo-Safe. I don't think the data would have been overwritten, but I haven't been able to locate it yet.

I had Windows 7 automatically downloading and installing critical updates. NO MORE!!! On 8/7/2012 a critical update was automatically downloaded and installed, unnoticed by me. When my computer would not turn on yesterday, 8/8/12 I tried many things, eventually restarting in Safe Mode - which did at least get me out of the black error screen and into windows. After poking around and testing things, I finally decided the only way to go was System Restore. There, I found there'd been an automatic critical update on 8/7/12. After restoring to before that point and turning off all automatic windows updates, my computer is now running fine.

But anyway, I updated my windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on December 14th. When I tried to reboot, it simply looped over and over until system repair came up. I've run it 19 times to date, and nothing. Luckily I have another windows 7 ultimate 64, and I created a repair disk on that to use. I tried the memory restore boot option, disable driver signing, diagnosed memory errors, etc. I tried to run an SFC Scannow, but it always says that there is a system repair that requires a reboot, please try again later. I managed to get all of my files off the computer, but still, I have nine different users on it, and it would be a pain in the ass to restore it. Is there anything I haven't tried? And before you ask, this is a legitimate copy -.-EDIT: I thought to disable automatic reboot after a crash, and I got the following error message:STOP: c000021a {Fatal System error}The non-DLL file included in known DLL list. system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000036f (0x005ff710 0x00000000)

Had a bad storm last night, so I shut down the comp. Restarted this a.m. tried to stream the Arsenal match and mozilla would crash every time I tried to leave the home page. Went to IE, watched the match, and then began to TS moz. After a bit I decided to unistall. Upon trying to reinstall i get a corrupt file error msg during extraction. I then tried to d.l. Chrome and had problems w. that too. Yet amazingly enough, IE works fine. Is this Microsoft just f'in w. me 'cause I'm not amused?I also notice that in my start menu I have no quick select icons for network connections, control panel, etc.

This is a really weird problem. I'm not sure it is directly related to Windows 7, but I thought I start here. I recently had to rebuild my Dell 531. New HD, Windows 7 Ultimate loaded over XP. I restored all my files from Mosy. Reloaded all the Office apps from Office 2007 Ultimate. What I just found is that there are certain Word and Excel files that if I even highlight using Explorer or try to open in the application will immediately crash the application. But, it is only certain files. There may be a dozen files in a folder and only a few will cause a crash. It doesn't take down the computer, only the application - I don't have to click on the file - only touch it. It doesn't happen on PDFs or graphic files (at least not that I found.)It gets weirder. I used FolderMatch to sync files between my Dell 531 and my Dell 9200 laptop. The very same files that I copied from the Dell 531 to the laptop do not have the problem on the laptop. The laptop is running the same version of Windows 7 and application programs as the 531.

My offline files seems to work offline all the time, even when it shows me being online. I sync most of my business files to my laptop for working at home at night. When I edit a file from my Win 7 (pro, 64-bit) laptop, then go to edit it again, I get the version I had changed, but no one else does. This is causing huge difficulty, because my employees will start working in a sales forecast spreadsheet after I reconnect to the network and supposedly sync, but they don't get the latest version. Even doing a manual sync seems to make no difference.

I have a system with 32gb DDR3-2400, a 256GB SSD and a couple of spinners. I have set up 4gb of the RAM to be used as another RAMdisk using the softperfect software. This problem has been going on for some time, but has been more of a problem since I started using the RAMdisk. Not because the RAMdisk itself isn't working well, because the stuff that is stored there keeps getting reset.I have pretty much identified that when updates are installed through windows update (either from Microsoft update or from my WSUS server), the following are reset to defaults
1. Pagefile is automatically managed and stored on the C: drive and is set to 32gb
2. The TEMP and TMP environment variables are reset to the C:users default location
3. The temporary Internet Files location is reset to the default C:users... location
There may be others that I have not discovered.I have manually set my swap file to 1024/2048 on the D: drive (a spinner), on the belief that it should rarely if ever be needed with a system equipped with 32GB of RAM. I'm certainly not inclined to waste 32GB of space on my SSD for an unused object.I have placed the TMP/TEMP files, cookies and Temporary Internet files on the RAMdisk to squeeze a little extra performance out of the system. (Yes, I know, I'm not really getting much benefit).Photoshop and a few other programs also use the RAMdisk as a scratch disk, and were the main reason I set it up in the first place. This is becoming a real pain when it gets reset as I have to manually change everything again. Anyone know a way to make windows leave settings at what I set them, instead of having it continually reset the values to what it wants? I'd prefer to have it my way. I know there will be proponents of "leave things as windows wants it".

I read through a few threads with similar topics but the issues were either not quite the same and/or resolved comparatively easily. I am trying to repair a 1.5 year-old HP Pavilion running Windows 7 Home Premium 64. This machine is used as the main office computer in a small doctor's office. In spite of my warnings, anti-virus software was not installed until it was too lateThere was a major issue about seven months ago that required another company to repairThe problem is explorer.exe will not run. Double-clicking a shortcut on the desktop, clicking the text name of a program from the Start menu, and even in the cmd results in the same response, a dialog box pops up stating windows explorer has stopped working.
windows is checking for a solution to the problem. followed by another box stating windows explorer is restarting. But the requested application never starts. I have run the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win, replaced the hard drive and cloned all data, run numerous registry scans, malware scans and antivirus scans. Initially removing over 1500 virus/malware hits and over 1400 registry errors. But the main problem persists, explorer.exe won't open programs.

Someone told me "The corrupted registry file needs to be repaired and would require performing advanced troubleshooting steps to fix the Windows Update issue" is there anyway i can get this fixed free? The problem this causes is that when i update the brand new windows 7 i just bought and i install then restart the computer so they can take effect ( Graphics Update ) After the Starting Windows Page my screen goes into sleep mode but i hear the starting windows noise. The computer technician told me "Just 149.99$ to fix this problem in one session" which makes me think i am really getting ripped off.

My friend's laptop won't boot. You turn it on and the Advent symbol comes up and gives you an option to go into the BIOS or onto system recovery. It allows you to go no further. If you go to system recovery you can't even do anything, the typing cursor style thing is just flashing. He doesn't have the CDs to recover Windows 7 and restore it.Is there any way to restore? I also have an Advent laptop, would it work if I made a recovery CD from control panel for Windows 7 and then use it to boot and restore his Windows?

My new laptop, after about 8 months of service, yesterday refused to be turned on again. No reaction to pressing the on button. The power supply seems to work. Before sending it for repair, I opened it and got the 2 HDs out in order to recodev some data using a SATA/USB adapter. Unfortunately, BOTH disks, when connected to another PC using the adapter, say that they need formatting. I tried to open a DOS window and typed : chkdsk e: /r It replied that the file system was RAW and chkdsk didn't work for it. When connected to a Linux PC, I can see the partitions but I could not mount them.

I was fixing a laptop that was having several issues, (special keys wouldn't work properly, internet explorer would crash, PDF files wouldn't open, etc) and I found a suspicious file (C:User<user>AppDataRoamingElofenmoma.exe) that was booting on startup. Virustotal hit me with only 3 results for a trojan, which is actually quite low, but this file was clearly the problem, the details seemed to be in russian and it's Regedit entry was random letters.
So I cleaned all evidence of this file and now the keyboard works properly, but I'm still having problems with executable. Most of the times when I open a program nothing shows up, yet the process is running, after opening it 3 or 4 times one window finally opens, but there's still 3 or 4 idle processes before it with no window in sight. Some times when I force close the first process all the other windows suddenly show up. I also noticed that the processes for setups, chrome, internet explorer tend to stay idle even after closing them normally (in the program itself, manually closing the process works).Usually I would just format the PC, but this is a very complicated PC to format, the owner has tons of certificates that he needs and most of them he doesn't even remember how to reinstall them again.
