Recovering Windows Mail Files
Nov 6, 2009
I have just upgraded from 32 bit Vista Home Premium to 64 bit Windows 7 Professional. I did the custom upgrade and have a huge Windows.old folder that contains most of the files from my Vista setup. I forgot to save my Windows Mail files. I'm assuming that they are still in this folder somewhere. Is there a way to recover them to use in Outlook 2003 (its what my company still uses) or Thunderbird? I have tried a few methods to use Windows Mail in Windows 7 but haven't managed to get any of them working.

Rebootedmy laptop after latest Windows 7 updates. While closing it started installing latest service pack. Next time I looked at screen it had gone to a black screen scrolling white text. Each line is 'Recovering orphaned file xxxxx into directory xxxxx' has been doinng this continuously for an hour now with 2 or 3 occasional half second pauses. Any ideas what is happening and what I should do next?

My husband's laptop had an issue. When that issue occurred our father in law created a stack of back-up discs. My husband had 100s of music CDs loaded on his laptop. so these recovery discs include all that music. He had his computer system restored by Geek squad with windows 7. But we can't figure out how to restore this stack of discs with all of his music. We've searched on windows help with no luck. He puts the disc into the e: drive and the files are visible. We don't simply drag and drop right?

My laptop was fried when it crashed during a BIOS update and I need to get the files off of it. I do not have a SATA adapter but I do have another laptop that I can plug the hard drive into (which isn't corrupted). Obviously I cannot boot the computer up since the Windows installation is going to differ but I was wondering if there was any sort of bootable CD software that I could run to recover files from the drive. The hard drive was running 64 bit Windows 7.

I am using windows 7 ultimate.Today I booted the computer and it went to a message that said preparing desktop. After windows loaded the normal software was present, but my customized links were gone and the default background was present. My files that were in my normal user folders were not present, but were later located in the users/username folder. I moved some of these folders to the desktop as that is where they had previously done. In the users folder there were 3 folders (public, my username and whatever the new default user was called). When I restarted the computer everything came back to normal, except the folders of files I had placed on the new desktop. I went into the user folder, but it only had my current user and the public folders. How do I recover the files from the desktop from the random corrupted profile that windows created which I can not manually log into? I searched for the files and the last record of them is linked to my user and says the shortcut is not valid.

I sent my laptop to a family friend for some free hardware repairs, but after discovering that my computer was highly infected with viruses the technician decided to save my data on an external hard drive and then do a reinstall/repartitioning of windows. I haven't installed anything on my laptop since getting it back, but have run testdisk, AOMEI partition assistant, and photorec from my external hard drive in an attempt to recover about 30 Gb of hidden and encrypted data that was housed in my Yo-Safe. I don't think the data would have been overwritten, but I haven't been able to locate it yet.

After reinstalling a new coly of windows 7 i cannot find my pictures in folders windows.old.The strange think is that i cannot find the pictures and the files that where in a sub folder inside a directory. The capacity of my hard disk shows that files are not deleted but i still cannot find them.

I have imported my Outlook Express files into Live Mail (from an XP machine to a laptop running windows 7) using the import function in Live Mail. When I look in the Storage Folders there are no files to view. In the Quick Views I am able to read and see unread emails from Outlook Express but not emails that I have read on my XP machine. To do the import I copied the files from the XP machine to a USB stick and then on the laptop browsed to find the files on the stick. The folder containing the OE files in not read only.

I am trying to put Windows mail on my Windows 7, but I had not saved my Windows Mail programs folder from Vista before I wiped it clean. It will be a ton of work on my part to get back to my Vista installation just for this folder, so is there someplace online I can get the files from??

I regularly activate Windows Mail on Win-7 for myself and my customers who are used to Outlook Express 6 and like it. I know how to migrate the address book from OE6 to Windows Mail but I can't seem to find the actual EMail folders in Win-7, Windows Mail. In OE6 they are *.dbx files and are easy to find, copy and migrate to the new PC. Now I have a friend who is running Vista with Windows Mail but he hates Vista and wants me to install Windows 7 for him. I have no problem activating Windows Mail in Win-7, but he'll want his old email folders and I don't know how and where to find them?

I have just upgraded to Windows 7 and Windows Mail. My old drive was not in good shape and could not be left connected, so I had my Outlook Express email stored to a My Docs location, which is were they sit in an .eml file format.
1. I have tried to have Windows Mail import them - no luck there
2. I have tried to drag and drop the file from exsisting folder to a new Windows Mail folder - it opens the file, but in a strange unreadable format - no luck there/What do I do to be able to access and read my old OE emails?

I had to change my old motherboard which burned out, but could not do a complete reinstall on the new motherboard so I had to reinstall all my programmes manually.
That's OK, but I got a huge problem with my Windows Live Mail files. I found the email files and copied them from my backup.
But for the life of me I just cannot find where the Calender file(s) are. Should normally be easy to find a file like this, but intense search has left me without any clue...

I'm getting a new PC with W/7 pro and want to import blocked senders, WAB, & iaf files into Windows Mail from my current XP pro OE.I have searched many areas for this info to no avail. I am not interested in any form of web mail, just plain pop3/smtp email that will allow me to easily import above files and allow me to send email links from browsers and email files at the folder level with a file mgr. This is the best I can do as to sys specs as I will be picking up my new PC fri 8-3-2012:

I'm wondering what Microsoft's rationale is behind leaving the Windows Mail folder in Program Files, albeit inactive?
I've already done the "fix" to enable WM in Windows 7, but would love to know exactly why it's still lurking in the bowels of the OS in any case?
I can understand the rationale for wanting to plug Windows Live Mail, but then surely remove it altogether from the system?
I don't recall any editions overseas where it is activated, or any other editions where it is an option.

I had some problems with my laptop and had to re-install my OS. I made a image backup of my HD with Acers's backup manager only to find it doesn't restore my data at all. (According to Acer this has become a common problem with the backup manager). I also made a copy of my HD luckily.
After spending some time on Google I discovered that the contacts, send emails and received emails were stored as an .eml file. I thought all was well and started searching through the copied data and found nothing. On top of that I discovered that the directory sections where the supposed files are stored, is not the same on the newly installed OS as it is on the copied data. For example:The copied data I searched in was under Users>username)>AppData>Local>Windows Live (or first) Microsoft>Windows Live but the new OS directory doesn't look the same. The windows Live 2011 I used before backing up was part of an update in the beginning of 2011 from MS and the one installed now I found on another site and then windows updated the rest. My OS must be the same as it's from a hidden partition on my Acer .
I have seen some XML files and don't know if this is a similar data file for WML.

My friend's laptop won't boot. You turn it on and the Advent symbol comes up and gives you an option to go into the BIOS or onto system recovery. It allows you to go no further. If you go to system recovery you can't even do anything, the typing cursor style thing is just flashing. He doesn't have the CDs to recover Windows 7 and restore it.Is there any way to restore? I also have an Advent laptop, would it work if I made a recovery CD from control panel for Windows 7 and then use it to boot and restore his Windows?

My new laptop, after about 8 months of service, yesterday refused to be turned on again. No reaction to pressing the on button. The power supply seems to work. Before sending it for repair, I opened it and got the 2 HDs out in order to recodev some data using a SATA/USB adapter. Unfortunately, BOTH disks, when connected to another PC using the adapter, say that they need formatting. I tried to open a DOS window and typed : chkdsk e: /r It replied that the file system was RAW and chkdsk didn't work for it. When connected to a Linux PC, I can see the partitions but I could not mount them.

I bought a Corsair force 3 SSD 60GB and I'm using it as a cache with IRST on my Asus p8z68 v-pro /gen 3 mobo (bios updated), well something has happened 3 times since. First I performed a clean windows 7 32 bits install, and installed the latest intel IRST drivers 10.8 (and now 11.2), then installed a game called SWTOR played for a few weeks everything was fine. Then uninstalled the game (20gb size) and after a couple of times using the pc, I can't shut down windows 7, had to press the power button off, then on, then a screen appears telling me intel caching is rebuilding itself and finally 0 access to windows 7.
Seems IMO like the raid 0 is not working anymore. I've never had issues with my pc and my HDD drive so I am suspecting 100% about the corsair ssd drive. I have had this issue 3 times since last March all after doing a full clean windows 7 installations, sometimes I updgraded the mobo bios other the ssd firmware currently everything is updated even the ISRT drivers however this issue still happened today again for the third time.

My Hard-drive recently crashed so I purchased a new one but I didn't have my recovery CD's so I went ahead and used my friends Windows 7 "ULTIMATE" disc not realizing that the product key I own is a Windows 7 "Home Premium" key. Now Ultimate is installed on my machine and not authenticated so I purchased the recovery discs for Home Premium from the manufacturer's website but when I boot up the PC with the disc in the CD-ROM it just goes straight to windows and won't recognize or load the disc.

I accidentally deleted a partition in Windows 7 (dynamic disk) using the disk management tools. That partitions is full of works and photos from the last 2 years. Are there any way I can recover the data? The space left by the deleted partition are still un-allocated at the moment. Do I need to create the partition prior to data recovery? I am using Active Partition recovery to scan at the moment. No result yet.

I do have the Driver & Utility Ver.1.0 disk, but I have lost the System recovery disk that was made by the store where I purchased my laptop from. I have tried recurring it using the partition file thing that's on my computer, but I received an error message. I am wondering, is there a way to recover my Notebook to factory settings without using the partition or the recovery DVD?
