Windows 7 Shows A Slower Performance Score Than Vista?

Mar 29, 2012

I have just bought a Acer Aspire 5735 running Vista 32 bit. It has 4gb ram and a Intel 2 duo T6400 processor. I have installed win 7 upgrade and found the performance score dropped from 3.7 to 3.4. The upgrade was installed on Vista as from the factory without any extra software. I have tried to upgrade to Win 7 32 bit but it wont accept that although the computer should be suitable.

Upgrade Performance Windows 7 Vs Vista

Windows 7 vs. Vista - Upgrade Performance

The latest Windows 7 client has its precursor beat in terms of upgrade speed

Windows 7 is “outrunning” Windows Vista in more ways than one. Microsoft has labored to ensure that the latest Windows client outpaces its precursor in a variety of scenarios, from startup time, to common usage tasks, and to shutdown, to name just a few. Another aspect in which Windows 7 has Vista beat is upgrade performance. According to Chris Hernandez, from the Windows Deployment team, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 to Windows 7 upgrades are at least 5% faster than Vista SP1 to Vista SP1 upgrades.

In fact, when it set out to do the operating system upgrade measuring contest, Microsoft was looking for at least a 5% threshold for upgrade scenarios involving Vista SP1 to Windows 7 was in comparison to jumps from Vista SP1 to Vista SP1. The Redmond-based company explained that the Windows Upgrade team monitored the Windows 7 upgrade performance during the development process, and that it compared it against its Vista baseline.

“The reason we choose to use a Vista SP1 -> Vista SP1 upgrade instead of Windows XP -> Vista as our baseline was for the following: Windows XP is a vastly different operating system compared to Vista and an upgrade from Windows XP -> Vista would not be a good comparison with Vista -> Windows 7. Windows XP did not support 64-bit upgrades and we wanted to track 64-bit upgrade performance as well as 32-bit upgrades for Windows 7. Vista SP1 -> Vista SP1 is a valid upgrade path that ********s all upgrade code (this upgrade is commonly used by Product Support Services for a repair scenario),” Hernandez explained.

Now, 5% doesn’t make a huge performance gap between the two operating systems. Still, users have to keep in mind that Microsoft used the Vista SP1 baseline comparison, and while I have heard countless complaints about Vista RTM, the barrage of criticism subsided with the advent of Service Pack 1, indicating a far superior user experience.

At the same time, the vast majority of end users don’t actually perform benchmarks, or monitor performance metrics. For them increased performance in every aspect of the operating system, including upgrade scenarios, is a matter of perception. In this regard, 5% is more than enough to deliver a palpable impression of boosted upgrade performance for Windows 7 in comparison to Vista.

“The upgrade performance tests used the metric of total upgrade time to gauge how Windows 7 upgrade performed against Vista upgrade. The tests were designed to measure total upgrade time simulating different user profiles (with different data set sizes, number of programs installed and settings) against different hardware profiles,” Hernandez added.

System Shows 64 Bit On Windows 7 Pro And 32 Bit On Vista After Upgrade

Jan 22, 2012

I had windows vista 32 bit earlier. Then I got windows 7 professional upgrade in trial period. I didn't notice how it happened. Of course it must be my mistake. Now when i boot from windows 7 it shows 64 bit and in vista it shows 32 bit. The system asks before booting which one to choose. It's today only that I have installed but I am not facing any problem as such except that i need a product key within 30 days. Should i leave as it is or uninstall vista somehow. Would i be able to reboot my system using the 32 bit vista CD?

Vista To Windows 7 Update Popup Shows Unloading The Box

HP Pavillion, Performance Lower Than Vista

Oct 3, 2009

a few days ago, I formatted my HP pavillion dv6870ej laptop (core 2 duo 2.8, 3GB, SATA 320GB drive, Nvidia 8400M)

it came with vista and performance was really good.

I installed win 7 rc (I need it to be a legit copy, and the 1-year evaluation offer wins my attention)

I updated all drivers and ran a radersync..

I was expecting a slimmer, faster OS.

but Win 7, while acceptable still feels a little behind vista, most notable is the application launch time, office 2007 word or excel takes about twice the time to launch on Windows 7 than on vista.

GUI also feels a little bit slow, while still responsive it does not have the screaming fast feeling I had with vista.

my WEI scores are 5.1 - 5.8 in all categories, except for display , aero graphics is 2.2 (!!!), and gaming graphics is 5.1

could any of you point me to what could be wrong ? what can't I see the performance boost and why is it slower than vista ?

Manufacturer VISTA Drivers To Fix Performance Issues

Jun 17, 2009

I am currently experiencing slow performance on a Windows 7 RC 7100 laptop.

I have run RadarSync and all drivers are up to date, however when I check the device manager, the following have exclamation marks;

- Mass Storage Controller

- PCI Simple Communications Controller

- Unknown Device

I am considering installing the Manufacturers Drivers for VISTA via "Troubleshoot Compatibility" mode as opposed to the Windows Supplied drivers.

Boot Menu Shows Vista After Clean Install

Sep 21, 2009

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate onto my Vista Ultimate Boot Camp Partition (on my MacBook Pro), rather than an upgrade install.

Windows 7 told me that it would move Vista to a folder called Windows.old or something like that.

Fine. After everything was installed, I used Disk Cleanup to delete that folder, and the space was recovered on my partition

But when booting into Windows 7, I get a boot menu that seems to indicate Vista is still there.

So my question is, can I simply delete Entry 2? Or is there other remaining stuff from Vista still on my drive somewhere that I should also delete? What is the drive "Active Boot Partition"?

I wish Windows 7 gave an option to do a clean install WITHOUT keeping the old system around...The whole point of doing the clean install was to get rid of all the accumulated junk and start fresh.

Windows 7 WEI Giving Me Lower Score

Sep 13, 2012

Recently I wanted to check out WinXP. I installed it and it ran pretty good. But Since I use Dx 10 for some of my gaming I decided Re-install 7. When I returned to 7 I noticed WEI giving me a lower score then what I used to have. I used to have a 4.2 Aero / 5.4 Gaming graphics. Now its showing at best a 3.8 Aero / 5.3 Gaming graphics score. I say at best because first going into Windows after the re-install it showed 3.7 Aero / 5.2 Gaming. And at the 2nd day in use 3.8 Aero / 5.3 Gaming. I did everything normal as always, installed DX update, Java, Flash, Visual C+. So maybe it just needs time to improve itself or maybe I'm missing something I don't know. The Graphics Driver is up to date and is setup as it always was when I had the high score. I know Windows 7 Improves Performance over time with superfetch so I'll continue to monitor it.

WEI Ssd Wrong Score?

Jul 3, 2012

My SSD was running on a wei score of 7.8, i have done nothing recently to cause this to change but i checked up on my wei score recently and suddenly its back to 5.9 .I discovered the problem is that in the detailed analysis, and its reading my HDD as the primary hard disk.I refreshed the wei and it still comes out as 5.9, i have no idea why this has happenedthere is no reason for it to have happened as i have changed nothing as of recent. So basically my question is how do i make wei read my ssd instead of my hdd as the primary hard disk like it was before?

WEI RAM Score Never Changes Despite Overclocked/new RAM

Nov 7, 2009

I am having the strangest readings from WEI.

Currently I am running Corsair 4 x 1GB PC6400 DDR2 RAM (5-5-5-18). At stock speeds, WEI is reporting a score of 5.5.

My roommate also has 4 x 1GB of DDR2 with SAME timings and he is getting a WEI score of 7.1. A HUGE difference.

I have tried overclocking my RAM to 4-4-4-12 at 900MHz and 2.1V. WEI STILL reports a 5.5 rating.

I have also recently bought 2 x 2GB DDR2 G-Skill RAM with 5-5-5-15 timings. WEI STILL gives a 5.5 rating.

I have also tried running 2 x 1GB of my Corsair RAM... HALF of what I usually run. WEI STILL gives a 5.5 rating.

Also, on the Sticky thread in this forum about memory assessment, mine hovers around 5863 MB/s... I've seen people post in there with slower timings then what I have mine overclocked at and get faster speeds...

Edit: I just put my RAM back to default timings... I am still getting the same MB/s rate. WHY?!

Edit: Roommate just ran winsat mem in the command console and got a 7000 MB/s rating whereas I am getting 5863... he has the SAME RAM just different companies.

What the crap is going on? Massively overclocking my RAM doesn't even change the rating slightly. Any help into this would be awesome.

Windows 7 Slower Than XP?

Aug 25, 2010

Well in my case, performance wise it's a lot slower is it normal? For example, watching videos is real choppy that I have to set its quality to low which I didn't have to do in XP. Playing games I get lower FPS compared to XP, and even browsing through my folders can be slow at times. I've looked around for possible solutions via search and found nothing. I've also installed all the drivers including latest video card ones from nvidia.com. It can probably be because of my slow ass processor or memory, which I will update in the future, but in XP it was running quite fine.
