Windows 7 Get Back A Lost Profile And All Its Settings?
Jul 27, 2012Suddenly on Friday 13th July (is this merely a coincidence) my user profile - and I am the only user on this laptop vanished. Fortunately I had backed up 99% of my files BUT I have lost all my E-mail history and all my Firefox Bookmarks. I have rebuilt from what I have but am suffering still from vital lost information. Is there any where I can get it back without I hasten to add losing the new version I have built and worked with since 15th July!

Aug 10, 2012I had Windows 7 and Xubuntu set up in dual boot by EasyBCD, a well known utility.Today the linux kernel has been updated and, after the following reboot, the choice of Xubuntu OS at the dual boot prompt didn't work.So I went through Windows, launched EasyBCD to fix things and:
- changed the order the entries (Win 7 up, first)
- selected Windows 7 as default OS
- removed Xubuntu entry
- added again Xubuntu entry through EasyBCD procedure
- saved (maybe I should have saved after each of the changes)
When I rebooted I've found that two identical Xubuntu entries, each pointing to the Linux OS, and no Win 7.I've tried to access Win 7 by Grub, but it points to the dual boot screen, so I'm at start point again.I don't have the Win 7 disk but the usual recovery partition. No backup. Going through the recovery partition gets me back to the dual boot screen..Is there any way to put it in order again? Could you suggestions work in this case?I know that, from Linux, I can install and overwrite MBR with free mbr.bin
sudo apt-get install syslinux
sudo dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin of=/dev/sda
But I'm not sure it will give me back Windows 7.

Aug 26, 2011i have a dell computer with windows 7. i put in memory stick from my camera to up load phot's as i have before. but this time it said the files have been damaged and need fixing which it recommended. so i fixed them it also said it was going to move them somewhere else but i can't remember where.

Jul 4, 2011I was using Illustrator CS5 with a number of documents open when I had to leave my office to deal with a screaming daughter. I was then a little distracted before I managed to get back to my laptop. To my horror my laptop had installed some updates and automatically restarted. And you guessed it my files were gone. I know I know I should have been periodically saving them as I worked on them and stupidly enough I had with one but not the others.I quickly checked the recycling bin to see if a back copy was there as I had heard that this is sometimes the case. I did find one document that was modified at the correct time and date but with some random name. I tried restoring it to find out what it was and now have no idea where it has been restored to.

Aug 21, 2012I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. That might have been a mistake. There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.

Mar 26, 2012The computer I'm having a problem on is a HP G6- 635 DX Windows 7 x64. About a week ago I decided to disable a few startup items because my computer took too long to load up. I think I disabled something that I shouldnt have because the next time I restarted I had gotten stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen.After I couldnt fix that problem I decided to just use the System Recovery option, so I popped out my hard drive and put it into an HDD enclosure and backed up my music/video files onto my other computer (Windows Vista Home Premium). When I plugged my hard drive back into the laptop I got the "bootmgr is missing" screen. I've tried all the command prompt steps to try and fix the bootmgr, they arent working but I think thats because my computer is automatically booting from the C: drive (which has no files in it and is about 200mb in size), and my D: drive is 285 gb and has all of the folders that used to be in the C: drive (Program Files, Users, Windows etc). Theres also another drive titled "Recovery" with the size of 13 gb

What software would you recommend to back up (clone) my Windows 7 install onto another hard drive. I would want the automated software to do this on a nightly bases. So if my main system drive fails I can point the boot disk to the "backup" drive and proceed as normal.

Jun 7, 2012A few months ago after a hard-drive meltdown I purchased a new Hewlett-Packard computer, with Windows 7 HP (64 bit) as the operating system. The tech who installed the computer said I should be fine to back-up to my Phillips 1 GB external hard-drive using the back-up facility provided with Windows 7 HP. I have made a few attempts to do so, all unsuccessful so far. Each time I get a fairly vague 'generic' error message (0x81000001), which does not really provide specific information:

Windows back-up encountered an internal error. Please review your settings and re-try the operation (It then gives the options of re-trying the back-up or changing the settings). I soon realised after my first failed attempt that my hard-disk space precluded me from backing up a system image, so I configured the back-up facility not to include one- but still the back-ups failed. My hard disk drives are thus:
(C) OS: 207 GB free of 919 GB
(D) HP- Recovery (1.45 GB free of 11.9 GB)
(G)'Elements' external HD- 1.20 MB of 298 GB (Basically this is an old back-up of my C Drive to an External HD, the capacity of which soon made it woefully inadequate for my back-up needs!)

May 25, 2011I just recently tried to install Windows 7 ultimate x86 it was fine untill it was finalizing the installation, suddenly it gave me the blue screen. i tried installing it again and it cant find the drive anymore. i tried using dos to make another partition but it cant find any drives or partition. the bios can read the drive. what did i do wrong?
