May 3, 2012So the SMART program has warned me about an imminent hard drive crash for a while. Yesterday Windows was installing updates when my dad closed the laptop lid, when I come home afterschool today, I open the lid and it is frozen. Windows warns not to power off during the updates but since it is frozen I have no choice so I power it off. I have constantly getting BSODs, and have to do a system restore everyday so I was not too worried when it wouldn't start up. So i hit f11 when i turn on my computer and it takes me to the HP Recovery Manager, HOWEVER this time the option to do a System Restore was greyed out and I can't click it! I don't have working recovery CDs so what can I do about this?? My new hard drive is also coming in tomorrow, but i won't be able to replace my failing hard drive when my Pc can't even start up now, and I can't do a system recovery to fix it...

Sep 25, 2010I ordered a refurbished/reconditioned Packard Bell EasyNote TJ74 laptop from a very well known retailer in the UK called Currys. I received it two days ago. Initally, the laptop stayed on for all of about 5 seconds before shutting down, however I have solved that problem by Googling the text and looking here: pxe-e61:media test failure check cable. It was basically trying to boot from something other than the HDD itself, so I set the HDD to the top of the list in the BIOS.Then, the next problem I got was this: I get the "Windows is Starting..." screen, and then a setup services starting message, and then this:"Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer."I restart the computer and... nothing happens. No Windows installation/recovery disk came with the laptop.So, I set the laptop to boot from CD in the BIOS and, using a 64-bit edition recovery disc I found online and ran startup repair using it, apparently no problems were found, and I got a message about ensuring I didn't have any cameras etc. attached... ..Someone online recommended I disable digital driver signing, so I did that by pressing F8 at one point when it was booting... it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Safe mode doesn't work either.Currys have told me they can do nothing but send a courier to my house to pick up the laptop... I don't get a replacement, simply a refund. I needed this laptop for Monday as I start university.I've set it back to boot from HDD and I'm getting the "Windows could not finish configuring the system, please restart" message again and again and again, and the system just constantly restarts and the same message appears. It is a never-ending loop!

Jan 12, 2013My laptop crashed the other day after a Windows update. To make a long story short it would not boot up. I tried several things to no avail. System restore disc did not work. At this point I thought the hard drive was fried. Finally I stuck the the Windows 7 companion disk and got the system to boot I can tell all my files are there somewhere due to amount of memory taking up on the hard drive. Anyways my main problem it is now asking for the product key although I have 29 days which unfortunately I cannot find. Laptop in question is a Lenovo G550. Where do I go from here? Do I have to purchase a new key? I've been using the laptop since and it seems to be working properly as far as i can tell.

Jul 11, 2011So the other day I wake up to log on to my Alienware M17x m1, which was running windows 7 ultimate x64 sp1. As it's booting up, I see the message operating system missing. So I grab my USB thumb drive (my cd/DVD drive does not work, thus I have to use windows 7 on USB). Tried to reinstall windows that way, but was getting some partition error of some sort. Now when I try to boot up with USB, I can't even get to the windows 7 installation screen. I get - The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry.

Jan 7, 2012I have a HP laptop that had Windows 7 installed on it, one day i got a message saying there were updates available, which included Service pack 1. So, i went ahead with the install however, when my system rebooted after the install there was an error message (i cant remember what it said, it was a while ago) so i immediately tried to put my windows 7 disk in, which would not boot. I have gone into bios and changed it so that it was the first boot item but still didn't work, even with F8, F12 etc. So i decided to borrow a recovery disk from a friend, it is a general one of the internet, i went through the repair options which didn't work, so i decided to format the hard drive which was successful. So now when you boot, as you would expect, you get a no operating system message. I try to put my Windows 7 disk back in to install it fresh but it still wont work, its like theres nothing in the cd drive.

Jun 28, 2012Yesterday I wanted to use my HP laptop with my TV so I connected it using an hdmi cable. Everything connected fine and I opened up my cyberlink youcam software to adjust the camera settings. I got up for a minute to do something and when I came back the computer had gone to the blue screen of death (displayed right on the tv screen). The error was SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION. This is the first time this happened so im not sure what to think. According to the HP website all of my drivers are up to date so I don't think that would be the problem.

BSOD After Finding Laptop At System Repair?
Jul 13, 2012Earlier this morning I restarted my laptop to the desktop and left it running. After coming back to my room a couple hours later, I noticed that there was a System Repair window on the screen. And whenever you see this there is always a state of being very concerned.I restarted my laptop only to be directed to the BSOD. I restarted the laptop, only to be presented with the same screen. I immediately took a picture with my cell phone to make sure I could read anything that could give me a clue as to what the error could be. Below are the error codes:

I started up the laptop and was prompted with options to either start Windows as it usually would or to try and go through the system repair. I tried system repair again. I was brought to a screen to try and do a system restore to an earlier point. The closest restore point was earlier today and that was due to some critical updates that windows had automatically had downloaded and installed. So, I tried hitting that restore point only to be shown a window that stated that system restore was unsuccessful with the restore. I tried again with a restore point from a week ago and was again shown the same unsuccessful window.
The next thing I did was scour the internet for recent BSOD listings. Everything told me to get into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 button after restarting the computer. The first time I tried it, I hit Safe Mode (without networking or command prompt). I saw the screen fill up with file listings as it usually does, again to be prompted with the BSOD. The next time I tried hitting F8 I was only shown two options: Start Windows normally or the system restore option. I tried again searching the internet on my phone to try and first power down the laptop, take out the battery and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, which I first did. Then I went into the command prompt located in the system restore window. I performed chkdsk /r on the C: drive by typing:C:, then enter and chkdsk /r I was then prompted with something about having to dismount the C; drive in order to check the drive, and pushed Yes for that. After that was completed I was successfully able to find all the boot options in the F8 menu when you restart the computer. This was an arduous journey to get this far. Took quite awhile and there were many unsuccessful other attempts before trying this route.So, I tried the Safe Mode with Networking and booted successfully into Safe Mode. I tried running Norton which stated that I couldn't perform that action. So I tried restarting, FINALLY to boot into Windows. I am currently performing a full system scan with Norton 360 and will post my findings. I am also posting the minidump files that were asked for, in order to post in this forum below.

Transfer System From One Laptop To A Slightly Different Model?
Oct 19, 2011I recently bought a refurbished HP laptop, a dv7-4183cl. Overall I thought the laptop was great. However it had a problem (it periodically shut down suddenly, as if it had lost power), and I contacted HP. I was quite surprised that this refurbished laptop had a 6-month support contract.
Unfortunately things did not go well with the repair process. I had to send it in three times, and every time they sent it back, something new was broken. Some of these things I figured out and fixed, but others required sending it in again. Plus every time I moved all my files & work back & forth from the 4183cl to an older laptop, it ate up way too much of my time. Eventually I told HP "This is nuts, I'm not sending it in again."
To my astonishment, they just contacted me and offered me a NEW laptop to replace the faulty refurbished one. Wow! Major kudos to HP.
It's a higher-end model (dv7-6199) -- Core i7 instead of i5, 1TB drive instead of 500GB, 8GB RAM instead of 6. So this seems like a fabulous deal.
My question: I've spent way too much time setting up this laptop -- installing software, customizing, etc. I would *really* rather not have to do that again. If they sent me another dv7-4183cl, I would just take an image backup of my laptop and transfer the image to the new one.
Can I do that from the 4183cl to the 6199? I suspect most OS settings will work OK, and Windows 7 will probably figure out and fix any drivers/etc that are different. (For example the 6199 has a Radeon graphics processor vs. ATI in the 4183cl.) The bigger disk is my biggest concern. What happens if I restore a 500GB image to a 1TB drive? Can I extend that partition, or would it be better/possible to create a second 500GB partition?
Laptop Not Starting Normally Without Crashing - Cannot Repair System
Sep 30, 2012I own a Samsung QX410 and while I was browsing the Internet it crashed and would not start normally without crashing. So I've tried running Repair my system, even Repair my computer from my windows disk. But every time I do that it comes to a blue splash screen (with the bird, leaf, etc.) and it would not do anything. No options would come up and it would just sit there.
