Windows 7 Explorer Library Won't Let Open Any Folders?
May 6, 2012
When i opened my windows explorer to go to my pictures . there were no folders just 4 boxes that said " pictures.library-ms." ( documents.library-ms. etc ] . i deleted them and tried to restore them but it didnt work . when i go to upload a picture to tumblr it works but not if i want to just upload them to my computer and veiw them .when i tried to save an image to the computer it wouldnt let me it said : " can not save to this location "
Like my title read, I can't open any folders in my Windows Explorer with a double click. It gives me the error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." This also happens whenever I try to open any drives, such as C: drive. I can however run programs from Windows Explorer, and can right click, then choose open to open folders.
I have already done extensive searching on the subject, tried deleting autorun.ini files, tried some registry fixes, with no luck. I'm obviously running Windows 7, 32-bit, on a HP desktop.
In Windows Explorer, I can't open folders by double clicking then any more. I can still open them by expanding then pointing to collapsed sub folders etc. Double clicking folders within an application also still works.
I recently have moved some of my users documents to a newer server from our old server. This caused no real issues and was quite easy to manage. After the move on one particular system, I updated the document library to make sure it was pointing to the new location on the new server, made the files available offline, and let it synchronize. After the synchronization was complete, there were no issues. However, when they try to attach a file to either an email or to a web form through Internet Explorer, the document library from the 'Attach a file' window is still pointing to the old location. When I try to point that library to the new location, it says the folder isn't indexed, although I can have the library open in a windows explorer window and show that it is indexed and in the library. Is there any way I can have the library updated in both Windows and Internet Explorer?
The system is currently running Windows 7 Professional 32Bit.It was running Internet Explorer 8 when the error first appeared, but I updated to Internet Explorer 9 and it is still not working correctly. This is the only system where it is acting like this, I have checked other identical systems that have had this file switch done as well.
I am setting up a new system and this is my first foray into the Win 7 world. So far, I really like it. My questions revolve around the location and size of Library folders. My root drive is an Intel SSD of 160 GB. My plan is to load program files only onto the C: drive and have all data and seldom used by useful programs on the 1 TB D: harddrive. My questions are, 1. Is there a way to change the default location of the Library folders to a drive other than C:? 2. Can the Library folders, or additional Library folders be located on the D drive? 3. If I have to leave the Library folders on the C: drive, I am concerned about the size. When I do a properties check on the folders listed under libraries, is the size given the size of the Library folder on C:, or the size of the folder actually holding the files?
I am not able to find the process to delete a folder from my Documents library. The F1 function says the following, but I cannot find the 'library pane', Includes, nor Locations. When you no longer need to monitor a folder in a library, you can remove it. When you remove a folder from a library, the folder and its contents are not deleted from their original location. In the taskbar, click the Windows Explorer button. In the navigation pane (the left pane), click the library that you want to remove folders from. In the library pane (above the file list), next to Includes, click Locations. In the dialog box that appears, click the folder you want to remove, click Remove, and then click Ok.
Is there a way to sort 'like a library' in windows explorer (omit 'The ' and 'A ' from file names)? i.e. I have the files (sorted as windows would normally do with sort by name):
A File 4.ext A File 2.ext File 3.ext File 7.ext The File 1.ext The File 5.ext The File 6.ext The File 8.ext The File 9.ext
And I want: The File 1.ext A File 2.ext File 3.ext A File 4.ext The File 5.ext The File 6.ext File 7.ext The File 8.ext The File 9.ext
I do not want to rename my files like this: File 1, The.ext File 2, A.ext File 3.ext File 4, A.ext File 5, The.ext File 6, The.ext File 7.ext File 8, The.ext File 9, The.ext
The file name formats are actually 'The Film.avi' or 'The TV Show SXXEYY.mp4' (where XX is the Series andY Y is the Epesode as a double digit numbers). If there is anyway to do this or a 3rd party program that will work with network sharing (my files are not on the local machine but a file server running windows 7).
I just installed win 7 ult 64 and have questions about Libraries...I have an external hard drive connected to my router and store a lot of my files and back ups on it...
Q1) If I include a folder in a library from the network drive, when I back up or image my laptops local D Data partition, will it duplicated these HUGE folders I have on my network drive? Or will it take up space on my local d data partition to add include those folders in library??
I know this is a small issue but I've already tried a few things. Naturally I made sure that in WMP 12 I went to Organize > Options > Player Tab and made sure "Keep Now Playing on top of other windows" is already UN-checked.I can also get this to work in the 64 bit version by doing the following:
1. Right click on the WMP shortcut and click properties.
2. In the Target box Add /Task MediaLibrary to the end.
3.Click ok.
Should look like this."C:Program FilesWindows Media Playerwmplayer.exe" /Task MediaLibrary Here is my particular conundrum. When I use the above example it works but it reverts back to the 64-bit version of WMP 12 and I lose all of my custom plug-ins. All my plug-ins are only compatible with the 32 bit version of WMP NOT the 64 bit version. I'd like to find a way of opening WMP 12 (32-bit) with Library View on top without losing the plug ins.I know this is a small issue as I can always click "Switch to Library" in the upper right hand corner. But who wants to do that every time a person opens WMP 12? I know its not the end of the world, but I never use the Now Playing screen as I'm always in the Library.
I know it's a small thing really cause all one has to do is click "Switch to Library" in the upper right hand corner. But who wants to do that every time a person opens WMP 12? I know its not the end of the world, but I never use the Now Playing screen as I'm always in the Library. Is their a quick fix for this to have WMP open by default to the Library instead of the Now Playing mode?
Forgot to add that I already went to Organize>Options>Player Tab and "Keep Now Playing on top of other windows" is already UN-checked. So that's why I'm confused.
It seems I can't pin folders to Windows explorer in my taskbar any more. A few weeks ago all the folders that where pinned there disappeared (even the ones that where added automatically) and if I try to add new ones nothing happens. Programs can still be pinned to the taskbar as before. What could be causing this?
I have windows 7. I can not open any folders on my desk top. I can not get into "my computer", "my documents", "the recycle bin" or any other area. I can not access any of my network drives because I can't get into My computer. I rebooted and it did NOT help. I get no error message or any message of any type. I click on the icon and nothing happens.I can open a word document, PDF, etc that is on my desk top that is not in a folder. Also, I have a Mac desktop computer that is connected to the same network as the Dell. I can get into my documents from the Mac. I have all of My documents stored on an external server not on a drive in the Dell or Mac.
I've been using these fourms for a few years sense I built my computer. I was having hardware issues and you guys helped me fix my computer before, I think I have a more serious problem than I had before. I'll try to keep this as short as I can, I've had a lot of computers over the years not to say I'm that savvy but I know what I'm doing somewhat, I've delt with most of any computer problems you could think of but i think this is beyond google instructions. It started I'd say about a week ago my explorer kept crashing when I opened any folders, I was searching for a solution for a while but I could just browse using programs so I put up with it for a while. I formatted my computer about 4 days ago, and it wouldn't get through "completeing instalation" , I had to turn something on in bios it wasn't RAID but it was the other one I forget what it was also unplugg all USB and use devicemg to turn off the unknown devices that where freezing the instalation of windows, it installed and everything looked to be fine, finally formatted my computer and tried to open a folder and after all that I'm back at square one with the folders not opening. Explorer doesn't crash anymore but it freezes up and I need to restart explorer to do anything else. I can open the event viewer but I've only recently read about event viewer so idk how to use it. My wireless adapter requires drivers to work I got them on a flash drive but I can't acesses it so I'm writing this on my iPod i don't know what else I could say, I never flashed my mobo or anything yet, no hardware changes in years and all the computer parts are fairly new, I'm running windows 7 64bit, i tried sfc /scannow it failed at 11% chkdsk /f said it would scan once i restart but i dont see how this could help sense ive just formatted..
"open each folder in its own window" does not work. (Windows 7) I've tryed restore defaults in folder options, I right click open/folder from Explorer, this is the olny way it works. This happens in all user accounts.
I recently installed the new pack of updates from Windows Update, and since then, I've been having an issue where my Folders will open in new windows, rather than in the same window, as a double-click should initiate. I have already checked in the Folder Options and they are checked to open in the same window, I tried flipping it the other way and back too, this had no effect. I am curious if perhaps something has gone wrong with the registry during the update
I have an LG N2A2 NAS box with a wired connection into my router. I then have two laptops that are generally connected to the router wirelessly but sometimes via cable, if I am transferring a large amount of data. The main laptop is running Win 7 Pro (64 bit) and the other one is running Vista Business. Until a couple of weeks ago the NAS would show up under computers in Windows Explorer on the Win 7 laptop, and the shared folders could be accessed. At that point I connected the other laptop via cable to the router.
Since then NAS has not been showing under computers in WE on the Win 7 laptop and I haven't been able to access the shared folders. The NAS is still showing as a media device and I can log in via IE - but I cannot get at the files directly or back up to a NAS folder. I have tried entering the device name and IP address in WE but I get the error message "Windows cannot access XYZ...". I ran the troubleshooter but it didn't work. The NAS came with a NAS detector utility and sure enough this detects the NAS but when I click "Open Network Folder" nothing happens. I have tried changing the IP of the NAS but this does not make any difference.
Windows explorer crashes with the error message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" whenever I click on any folder that has a RAW image file (.CR2) or a TIFF/PSD image file in it. It then shuts down and restarts. It only happens with these large image files, not video, audio, or pdf files.I'm running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. My computer did two lengthy Windows updates over the last week when I did system restarts, so maybe that has something to do with it?I spent the whole day yesterday trying different suggestions I found on the web and nothing has worked. Here's some of the things that I've tried that have been unsuccessful:
- Selected "Always show icons, never thumbnails" in "Folder options / View".- Scanned my computer with Malwarebytes. Same problem after the scan/cleanup.- Tried do a System Restore on 6 different restore points and none of them could complete the Restore successfully.- Tried to do a System Restore on the same restore points in safe mode and it still couldn't do it.- Ran SFC/ scan, still does the same thing afterwards.- Updated my video card driver.- Tried different image codec packs.- Uninstalled all image codec packs.- Some selective startup or clean boot stuff through "msconfig" that didn't help.- Plus a few other things that I can't even remember (it was a late night!) to use Photoshop and work with these images for my line of work so I'm kind of at a standstill until I get this resolved.
When I right-click certain folders, I Windows Explorer crashes. There's no pattern that I can see where some folders will crash Windows Explorer and others will not[CODE]
^^ u know how in above pic of wmp's icon I've pinned 2 of my playlist ? anytime i click and it starts playing in wmp as well as those Frequent programs ...

I know it's not very important but i am used to it and thats one of the main feature i liked in Windows 7.. and i am very curious about it to that how it happened and how should i get it back..

I got the new system built and also have win7 pro 64bit installed. I do graphics and often have several folders open to do transferring of files and adding to runtime libraries and so on. MY GOD! How many windows does this program have to open any way!? How can I get individual separate windows not "stacked" in the task bar?
I have a problem with the folders in windows explorer in windows 7.Often windows explorer automatically creates unwanted folders who I cant recognize. Often some folders have been splitted in 2 or more folders. One example is that it had been created 2 folders of my "bon jovi"-folder. One of them has the original name "bon jovi" and the new folder has the name "jon bon jovi". Strange behaviour by windows explorer.Or just one file is saved in a folder and a subfolder, which have names based on the files name, often the artist and album. If I download one file, I want it saved in "my music"-folder "bare", not hidden in 1 or 2 folders.Suddenly, after 15 mins or so, a lot of new unwanted folders appeared in "my music" with subfolders and just one mp3-file. The new folders were created just some minutes ago. The numbers of folders in "my music" has increased much. Many of the mp3-files are downloaded from dc++, but the settings in dc++ is correct. The files are saved in "my music"-folder.Ive tried to change the foldersettings in windows explorer, f.ex organise -> reset folders, but it doesnt help
I have been searching the internet for the past few days for answers to this problem and haven't found anything yet. Randomly in the past few days Windows 7 explorer/my documents folder/anywhere in my computer locks up and stops responding when I try to use my keyboard. No matter what I try to do, renaming documents, using ctrl-c, pressing shift, using any key on the keyboard, it locks up. I have tried running windows updates, running virus scanning, spyware scanning....nothing will work
I have three computers all running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, one of which functions partly as a media center (hosting music etc), the second and third being my office workstation and laptop respectively. The media center has a hard line to my cable modem (via Trendnet wireless-N router) while the latter two connect via wireless; the workstation via a wireless ethernet hub and the laptop via it's integrated wireless.I currently have all of my media folders shared via homegroup on the media center. My laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad W500) can access all of the shared folders. My office workstation, while I can "see" the shared libraries/folders on my media center, hangs (the explorer window appears to be perpetually loading) whenever I attempt to open any of the folders. Sometimes when this happens I can kill/restart explorer but ever so often explorer itself will be unable to restart and I will have to reboot the entire machine.I have Windows Security Essentials running on both machines - all three are almost identical with respects to the installed software.I have tried reconfiguring the homegroup multiple times, flushing the dns cache, resetting and cycling the router, and have even swapped out wireless adapters (on the problematic workstation) to no avail.
I recently reinstalled windows7, and now my storejet 1.5TB external hdd is much slower, I can view/open nearly all my data except for a few folders. Some threads say that it is a virus? These folders I cannot delete either.
Is it possible to have vertical auto scroll when viewing folders and files in windows Explorer, ie. click mouse wheel and then move downwards to scroll down and vice versa?Currently my WE does not allow me to select auto scroll vertically.
Whenever I use the windows open/save as dialog box, I'm unable to expand 'My Documents' folder under Documents. Yet, I'm able to expand 'My Documents' folder from windows explorer. Same is true for all the Libary folders under Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos. I can only expand the first folder level.
When I click to open the outlook on my windows 7 operating system it says loading profile for ages then and error message appears with "Can't open your default email folders. Express can't open. Your server may be down for maintenance."
