May 1, 2011I am planning to setup a windows 7 64bit based HTPC, and I have realized that I need more then 2TB of storage, so I am planning to use 2x3TB Hard drives, setup in Raid 1. Right now there are two ways I am thinking of setting it up, either with the 2x3TB drives in Raid 1 directly attached to the HTPC (sata3), or with the 2x3TB drives in a separate NAS drive, so I can make the media more available on the network.I read the thread here, and I see that I would need to format the drives as GPT instead of MBR, and I have some questions on how would work with my setup and if it would be compatible. If I put the drives locally in the HTPC, I would just be using them as data drives setup in Raid 1, the OS would still boot from a separate normal MBR hard drive. It has also been mentioned that you may need a EFI bios, which I understand is very new and few motherboards ship with this type of bios, or can even be upgraded to to it? Is this needed at all for using these drives, if I am not attempting to boot from a GPT drive? So my main questions are, if I install win 7 normally on a separate MBR hard drive on this AM3 motherboard, and then connect the 3TB drives, should I be able to format them as GPT with no issues, and setup them up in a raid 1? And then if I share them on the network, should other computers be able to access them with no issues? Also should they work fine in this dlink NAS listed below, and be accessible on the network as normal? Would I need to format them to GPT first in a win 7 computer, or could they maybe be formatted directly in the NAS?

Apr 25, 2011I have Win 7 home premium on an HP laptop with 4 usb ports. I have 2 Western Digital Elements 1.5 TB drives for backups. If I plug in one of the drives, Win assigns a drive letter, but if I add the second one it doesn't.
To troubleshoot, I've plugged each drive into every usb port on the laptop, and each port reads each drive alone, but if I plug in the second drive while the first is still in, it shoes up in devices but does not get a drive letter. I tried assigning a different drive letter to the device plugged in first, but Win still doesn't assign a letter to the second drive.

Oct 13, 2012Background: I have a WinXP desktop machine with a hard drive that may have a virus/trojan/rootkit/etc. Normal scans on the WinXP machine with MSE or ThreatFire have not discovered the problem. But the best way to scan a drive is to remove it and treat it as a purely 'dummy' data drive plugged into a usb drive dock and run the scan from a clean machine. This way any infected programs and/or O.S. on the drive will have no control to mask or hide themselves. My other computer is an HP Windows 7 laptop. Jan 18, 2013I decided to just revert to my old XP64. At first I was gonna try to dual-boot, but the fly in the ointment was all I had was an image on my external HD, which has about 100G of other stuff on it. My disc drive would not for the life of me burn an ISO image on any of my three DVD types. And the process of trying to find how to fix the drive problem and/or create just a bootable PARTITION on a HD without effecting everything else just drove me insane...which is kind of where I am now. After a week now I just have to get back to my project. lol And if that means no fancy windows 7 internet experience..while attempting a dual-boot scenerio workaround, I shrunk partition C and created a new 5G partition at the end of it. In EaseUS, I assigned it letter B and I set it to active, figuring it was to be bootable (wrong, I know). Additionally near the same time in Folder Properties, I unhid system files, folders...etc.
NOW the System drive showed as F! Then, attempting to use EasyBCD, it told me it could not find the BCD files to begin. So, naturally it had to do with that.I thought maybe it should have been B, but why would Ease US give me that letter option?After showing Easy BCD the file it seems to be OK....there. Also in Startup & Recovery it is listed in System Startup as the default system. But is it OK?Also, should it also be active. Did I inadvertently switch it by making the new partition active? What should I do to get it to boot properly. I AM planning on booting XP from a flash drive anyway, but still.
Install Windows 7 With Sata Hard Drive And IDE DVD ROM Drive
Oct 8, 2010I have tried numerous times on my PC to install Windows 7 onto my Sata Drive to no avail. Yet as soon as I plug in my IDE HD it installs fine.I have unplugged all external peripherals USB and internal Card Reader. Set my Bios ok as it sees both the Hard Drive and DVD fine (Both in the bios and during selection of hard drive during windows 7 installation). Yet when I come to install it, it craps out at a random percentage saying cannot read from source or worse yet it crawls so slow through the percentages (I really don't think Windows 7 should take 6 hours to get to 15%!!) Yet both the hard drive and dvd are fine and the disc works great on my other PC without the sata drive in.
My motherboard is a Biostar G31-M7 TE with latest bios now what is odd is that I recently updated the BIOS to the latest one so does my problem come from here or was it always going to be a problem on this board? Also when I do have Windows 7 installed on the IDE drive when I plug in ther sata drive inside the whole system goes belly up (from freezes when transferring large files to just not seeing the drive)

Mar 21, 2012Recently my wife caught a virus on her computer (HP touchsmart windows 7 home premium). Your typical virus program that sends hundreds of pop up screens and says click this for full removal, blah blah blah. Anyways I used malwarebytes to see if the program could be removed, malwarebytes found 5 problems and I removed them. Afterward I noticed that there were no icons on the screen, I tried to bring up task manager and the computer rebooted. once the computer rebooted, there was a black screen with "no operating system found".
I tried the "repair your computer" option on the Windows 7 disk, but it was not able to repair the problem automatically, I also tried some manual command scan prompts that I found on the net. None of this has worked so far.
I figured that I would take the hdd out of her computer and dock it to another computer. The hard drive connected fine, but when I tried to open it there was nothing in there. I tried to make sure that all files were not hidden (they weren't). Funny thing is when I click on properties for the drive it shows that the drive is 2/3rds full but I can't see any files or information when I try to search the drive. I also just tried copying the hard drive to another harddrive and it was copying files but once I opened the new location, it was still empty (even thought the folder said in properties 84 gigs).
Is there something that I am missing, I would like to retrieve all of her documents, pictures etc. then I could reformat that drive and re-install windows if I can not get it to boot back up correctly.
Windows Is Not Recognizing Second Hard Drive In Optical Drive
Jun 16, 2012I have an Alienware M14x R1 with a SSD - Crucial M4 in the main spot and the stock HD in the optical drive. I have never had any issues with any of this stuff before this clean install - and I have done clean installs previously. I also used Parted Magic to Secure Erase my SSD and HD before install.I am experiencing some pretty frustrating problems:
1. I have NO INTERNET CONNECTION (everyone keeps telling me to install drivers...how can I do this without internet connection??)
2. Windows is not recognizing my second hard drive in the optical drive even though it did when I was installing and showed it at the section where you can add new partitions etc
3. My display adpater is not working as I have a 1600x900 screen and I can only go up to 1024x768...

I´ve just installed Windows 7 and this is what I want to do:
Copy my old Favorites-folder (Win Explorer 8) from the old harddrive to my new folder in Win 7.
I had some problems accessing my old folder in My Documents on the old harddrive but i changed permission and ownership and finally I could access it and copy the folder. But. It seems impossible to copy it into c:UsersxxxxxFavorites
It just says "You´ll need to provide administrator permission to copy this folder"
I´ve disabled the built in admin account and tried every fix I´ve found but I still receive the same message. How can I fix this??? Seems like a simple thing to do but i just cant get it to work.
Windows 7 Won't Recognize IDE Hard Drive & DVD Drive
Apr 1, 2012I recently installed windows 7 home premium 64 bit, previous OS was Vista home premium 32 bit. My desktop is an HP pavilion d4650y. I have the OS loaded on my main HD which is a SATA.
HD & DVD drive worked perfectly before on vista. I tested both devices on another pc with XP and they work fine. I've triple checked the connections but still the devices are not recognized by Windows 7. I've also tried renaming the HD & changing the drive letter, but still no luck.
Both drives are connected to a PCI E card, and are set to cable select, on separate cables. In the BIOS both drives show up. In disk management they do not show up at all.
My HD is a western digital 250 gb EIDE, and the DVD drive is a IDE Pioneer DVD burner (secondary disc drive).
Install Windows 7 Onto A Different Drive Letter/drive?
Mar 22, 2012I have a new copy of windows y 64 bit ultimate. I currently use w7 64 home premium and it is on C drive and the drive is a sata 2 drive. But when I build my new system I want to install onto a new drive which is sata 6.0 and I have made a partition on that drive (letter M) for the O/S to be installed onto ( ive allowed 150Gb ).
So my question is when I build my system and am ready to install w7 can I install onto drive M on the new sata 6.0 drive?
I will unplug the old boot drive as I understand windows will boot to that if I dont unplug it, then when I have installed new O/S on the new drive, partition "M", I will plug it back in and format the old boot drive.
So then windows will boot to drive/partition M, if that works, and C drive will just become a data drive. I understand I probably will have to do some messing in bios, so any help with that will be good.
this will be my 1st build but I am not to bad with computers and have changed cpu's/HD's/gpu's/fans etc etc. but not mobo's and cases. And never changed a O/S onto another drive with a different boot drive letter.

May 29, 2012My HP laptop HD crashed, am trying to replace it with a Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD. I do not have Windows installation disks, only have Windows Recovery Disks. All installation instructions I have found for SSD's is for cloning, which I cannot do since the HD is deadI have installed the SSD, booted into BIOS, this simple BIOS version doesn't allow me to change anything on the HD, but it does recognize it and let me do a HD test, so it does recognize the SSD. I then put the Windows Recovery disk in the CD drive, attempted to boot up, but the CD drive just spins and spins but never boots up. I thought the CD drive might be bad, so I tried an external USB CD drive with the Recovery disk, but it does the same (just spins). I even got a new Windows 7 installation disk (from another PC) to see if it will boot from it, but get nothing but a spinning CD I have not done anything yet to the HyperX SSD, haved not formatted or partitioned it.I thought this would be done by Recovery on the OS installationThe BIOS is set up to first boot from the CD drive, so the boot order is not the issue.

Aug 21, 2012I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

Sep 7, 2012I installed Ubuntu on my computer a few months ago and created another partition for it on my 1TB hard drive. I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. That might have been a mistake. Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on my hard disk that I can't use and I don't know how to add it back to my c: partition.
There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.
