Windows 7 Buggy After Malware Infection / Removal
Mar 23, 2011
After several days with a very patient and through BleepingComputer Volunteer, I believe my computer is malware-free. However, my computer itself still seems to be having issues. None of these issues occurred prior to the infection. My logs appear clean, but these issues remain:Mouse cursor "stutters" at times.Windows flickerStartup and shutdown take excessively long at times, others it is very fastShortcut icons (but not regular icons) have some sort of "blank" icon in front of them. Here is a link to the malware removal threadMalware Removal ThreadAttached as well is a picture of the icon situation.

Last week I downloaded firefox without paying enough attention to the source of the download and now my computer is full up on programs I do not want. These programs include something called "pc fix speed",a woman's head with a headset that shows up on the title bar of every internet window I open and I think is called "24x7 help", and a new toolbar when i open internet explorer that includes a blue ball that says "ws" next to a web search box, a "translate" button, and a "get whitesmoke english writing software" button among other things.

Following the removal of some malware [URL], I have not been able to enable my Server Service in Windows 7. I was advised to post this here. This means I cannot share files, use bonjour services, vnc etc. I have encountered Error 1068: The dependency or group failed when I enabled the server service in services.msc.
I have already tried the following (and none worked):
- Enabling in safe mode
- Enabling all startup services in msconfig
- Modifying the registries in folders: Ndisuio, EapHost, and Dhcp (with instructions specified on another site)
- Checking the firewall.

remove ZeroAccess trojans that were traumatizing my laptop erfectly (used ComboFix,MalwareBytes and TDSSKiller) and the malware doesn't show up on any scans anymore (ran from Safe Mode), but I cannot access my desktop for more than 5min at a time before it freezes up and I have to manually shut down and start up again. I managed to re-install my Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 temporarily, but it doesn't show up on my desktop or taskbar. I have tried SFC/scannow returned :"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." My system restore does not work either for some reason since I got this laptop a year ago and Startup Repair shows no errors.. I am relatively good with computer diagnosis, but this one has me losing sleep for two days straight.

I recently followed procedures for removal a rogue Windows 7 Recovery malware application on my Windows 7 Home Premium system. After the successful removal of the malware, my Start Menu Programs are all missing (basically nothing in there) and 95% of all my icons (on the desktop, within Win Explorer) are all grayed-out. (They still work but are gray). I have a feeling it could be a corrupted user profile, but I'm not sure. So far, I've restarted twice, right-clicked the start button to make sure default settings are set, ran a CMD prompt with SFC /SCANNOW.

My son was not using a security software program and got the "MS Removal Tool" infection. I have Norton and was trying to download it to his laptop, from Norton site, but the malware blocks even getting on the internet to do the DL. It stops the laptop operation within seconds after the boot up. I can get to the "safe mode" by pressing F2 immediately but then, after that, I don't know what to do! Should I go buy Norton at a store and install from disc? and how would I do that, in safe mode? how to get his system up and running again and this time protected. his rig is a Toshiba, 17" laptop, windows 7,

I recently built a new computer. The only issue I have right now is that I constantly get a pop-up from Realtek HDAM saying "You just unplugged a device" then immediately "You just plugged in a device".I disabled the popups but they still show up. That's not really the problem, I can live with that. It's the annoying cut out of audio every 20 seconds followed by the audio being a lot quieter. Originally I installed the drivers from the motherboard CD (Asus P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3). Frankly those worked better but I still had the issue, I updated the drivers to a newer version, but now I keep getting this problem more often.

So, I'm trying to get an online game working, thinking they had issues. Come to find out, neither my firewall nor updater has been working since January. Here's the link to my original thread, where Gringo helped me get rid of the infection:I dug around and found a registry file to get the firewall working, but I'm stumped on the Updater.

I am on a windows 7 home premium, 64 bit Asus a53u. This is a friends computer. His USB, SD card, and webcam quit working 2 weeks ago and he came to me to fix it. He had a root kit in his registry, and a bunch of trojans.happili and generic trojans and another root kit. I can not get one of the viruses to uninstall (don't have sufficient permissions to get rid of it. Hiding in the ask toolbar updater) but it shouldn't be a problem because its been quarentined and is no longer running (sob was using 100% of the CPU). So I the drivers will not install. Period. I can download and install the realteak 2.0 but the drivers in the device manager will not install. I believe I got an error 0000027 (can't figure out where I got that from) Also I am not willing to spend any money on software. Hes not paying me and is not willing to reimburse either.

Need a little advice. Still dealing with the nasty infection. I have done a clean install where i wiped my hard drive for about 4 hours.
I am still dealing with the infection when i place a blank disk in the drive it will type into the start menu. I am a little unsure if it would be suitable to reinstall again and flash my bios or get hackthis logs done.
If i should flash my bios how do i do this?

my netgear wireless modem and wireless network were renamed and all the passwords reset. Hard reset to recover. I am still getting browsers redirected daily. All three browsers each will give message that setting have been changed when opened. IE will say search setting have been corrupted and mandate Bing. Internet Options will be reset to custom levels without a reboot. I have installed AVG 2012 paid. No scan from various scanners will show an infected file except some cookies. AVG rescue disk scan found 13 password protected files that were renamed. Broke AVG and required a reinstall. Password protected files were back by the end of the day. AVG says there should be NO password protected files in their sub-directories during a rescue scan. Their solution is a wipe and reinstall. What is the safest process of doing the HD wipe and reinstall? Just plugging the thumb drive in got me all this grief. Is reinstalling files from the DVD the same process? If i try to access my old files am i opening myself to reinfection?

My computer had a nasty virus which I think have since removed. The only problem is none of the programs in my program files are available. The folders are empty.I am at a bit of a loss here.If I search, I can find the programs so I know they are there somewhere!I am almost to the point where I want to scrub the hard drive and start from scratch. If I do this, how can I backup my program files that I have?Is there a way to drop them onto a back up hard drive, then just move them to the new fresh O.S.

Right about the time we got the virus out I started to get regular system freezes and BSODs at random times throughout the day. I'm not sure if it's something we did, if the virus messed something up, or if it's some unrelated issue. It's not the memory since I tested it last night and there weren't any errors. It can happen at any time. I haven't been playing any games and the only game I ever do play on this laptop is minecraft. I do play some Hulu and Netflix videos, but these crashes and lockups don't only occur when I'm watching a video. I can simply be browsing the web or working on my webpage and I will get the BSOD or the system will freeze.[CODE]

I have reformatted and installed a minimal version of Windows 7 but have yet to stop this thing from maintaining its hold on my network. After some 20 hours a day for nearly a month, it has taken its toll on my family. My son's new laptop for Xmas is now infected too. We will fix that very soon tho. Please guide me on how to proceed with this laptop for now. They have already wiped out my bank account once.

After becoming unable to download identified updates in Windows Update, and also being unable to search for new updates, I did a detailed scan with Microsoft Security Essentials which identified and removed some malware (Exploit:Java/CVE-2010-0840.IZ).
Since Windows Update still wouldn't work I restored my settings from last Friday with no improvement. Using Fix problems with Windows Update gets stuck on Fixing problem.
I then tried to do a reinstall as an update, but the installer was unable to find any updates (or rather it was forever* trying to locate any).
On a tip from a friend I looked in the hosts file but it was unaltered. *Forever is a relative term but in this case it's 90+ minutes.

My sister's computer is an HP Pavilion dv5t-2200 notebook PC running its native OS, Windows 7 Home Premium x64. In the last 24 hours, Avast found and attempted to remove some sort of malware. After the reboot, it recommended a full scan. After the scan was completed, the computer rebooted again. This is where the real problems began. With the exception of core programs and services, no other program will launch. Not Chrome, not AIM, not even Avast!. The only HP program still installed on the system, HP Support Assistant, will not start. Attempting to use Windows System Restore results in a BSOD as the computer is shutting down to begin the restore process. Upon returning to the desktop, a dialog box recommends that we run chkdsk, but of course that won't even launch.
Internet Explorer will launch, but the campus network requires a third-party client software install. Unfortunately, that's another program that will not launch. The computer has a recovery partition, but HP Recovery Manager is not installed or cannot be found, and attempts to download and install it have failed because 1) we cannot access the Internet to download it to the hard drive, and 2) it could not be installed from a flash drive containing the softpaq from HP.

I use Firefox 10 on Windows 7 Professional (fully updated). The machine has two drives, each booting to Win 7 and Win XP. This problem is on the Windows 7 side.
Yesterday, I used Google to search "Indian restaurant Fort Worth reviews"
In the results page, I went one by one to each link. When I hit one of the links, which I am sure is the domain of a restaurant, I got the famous "You have viruses, click to scan" popup. In a few seconds Security Essentials popped up its warning saying that it found this bad file:
C:programdataca0e4fsmca0_8050.exe
I copied its name and saved it to a text file on the Desktop. Then I tried Alt-F7 to close the window, next the X, which gave another popup. I then let Security Essentials delete what it found. I then closed the browser and rebooted the computer.
Both (PS/2) keyboard and mouse were disabled at the login page. I tried a USB Microsoft Keyboard. That too did not work. F8 -> Safe Mode did not help.
I started the XP side of the computer. Ran Security Essentials - 18 hours. In the meanwhile I searched and located the bad file and two other files related to it and deleted them. Security Essentials right then said it found a bad one. (Was it because I touched it?). At the end of the scan, I allowed Security Essentials to delete the two things it said that it found.
Rebooted to Win 7. Still no keyboard, no mouse.
I called Microsoft (you know, long distance to the other side of the globe). Several calls. And I consistently got Kindergarten level support. They tried to blame the manufacturer of the keyboard, then tried to scare me away with a $99 charge. They did a System Restore on the Windows XP side (!), then finally, one tech connected to it over the Internet and ran Malware Bytes on it. We also tried F8 -> Last good boot. Then he wanted the Windows 7 CD. When I read its name, he said he was looking for the Windows 7 re-installation CD! That was the end of M$ support.
how to get the thing to see the mouse and keyboard? I can see the Win 7 drive from Win XP side (as its D: drive).

so somehow I caught the malware program known as Windows 7 recovery. As per its standard operations it made my computer seem like it was having a bunch of issues, hid all the files on my hard drive, removed my background, etc. I followed a removal guide I found here on bleeping computer and it did rid of me of that annoying malware. A lingering problem I am still experiencing is that all my start menu items are missing. For example there is a folder for Microsoft office, but when you open it it shows as empty, but if I open a Microsoft office file like say a word file the program opens as normal. I have run the unhide.exe file a couple of times, and shutdown my firewall and maleware protection, but to no avail the start menu items still seem to remain hidden.

I did some 'searching' and found a few posts about 'magnifier' but most were concerning it's use, how to exit out of it, etc. My question is how to stop it.
I've been to Ease of Access Center, and there is no checkmark in magnifier. A shortcut to it is listed in start menu and I located the app in C: drive. But I can find no way of 'executing the exe'. It is constantly popping up when I'm using anything on the desktop. This is a real nuisance for me though I'm sure many may need it.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate?I ran ESet security and it found and deleted two infections in Appdata/roaming - (I noted that it was reading trial mode at the bottom of the windows screen which I never noticed before but at least that was when it was still functioning. I restarted the computer, was welcomed by the Asus menu screen first and then when it goes to load windows, it says "loading windows files" and then goes to the automatic repair feature. It says corrupt file in problem details and proceeds to conclude that it can't fix it. In the advanced features, I have tried the startup repair with no luck, the system restore with no luck - tried all restore points listed and after many many 30 min intervals, it comes back that it cannot restore to the previous state. There are no disk images and no memory problems. Command Prompt will run (although one time it did not and simply shut down). I booted from DVD and tried repair from that with no more luck than before, however, did find it strange that when it looked for the windows installation it found one called windows and one called Microsoft Windows - same partition size, all details the same, not sure what's up with that.
I followed the info under Windows cannot start/.exe files cannot run forum up until ubunto is concerned something about the cd and usb running I can get it to make the mbr.bin file but can't get it to recognize the usb to put it on to check it out or the balance of what's next? Also, at the Automatic System repair it reads:
Startuprepairoffline
6.1.7600.16385
6.1.7600.16385
unknown
212009913
autofailover
13
corruptfile
1033 locale 1D
It doesn't identify an actual corrupt file name it says it can't determine the root of the problem.Tried to run Windows 7 upgrade from the disk but because I'm not in windows that won't work and also because I'm running SP1 and I don't have the disk for SP1.I've downloaded Unetbootin and Ubontu but don't know how to work them to get things fixed I've also tried unloading the windows update cache but still nothing because prior to this problem it was failing on all windows updates and have noticed other people comment that that was their problem - still no luck.

I have 2 unusual file folders at the root of my C: drive. The names of both are alphanumeric gibberish,like:af216ca03f1720edf1e7a15b650cbd63One of the items contained therein is identified as a "Windows Installer Patch. There are numerous subfolders labeled "1042" , "1043", et. seq. Both folders are locked and i can't access any of the content even with Administrator's priveleges. These certainly look like leftovers of some kind that should be discarded.
