Windows 7 Pro - "create" Access To Server?

Sep 21, 2012

I am a database programmer. I publish a client-server application. I have a client who is adding Win7 Pro workstations to their existing network, which at the present time consists of WinXP workstations talking to a Windows server (not sure of version).he application needs to be able to create and destroy temporary files on the server. The XP workstations have no problem doing this, so the server permissions are set correctly. However, the Win7 workstation is unable to create the files as needed. The same user and folders are being used, so the only difference is the workstation OS.The folders are visible and can be accessed; the application runs, and can read and write existing files on the server, it just can't create/destroy files there

Create A Windows Home Server With An In Use PC

Dec 1, 2012

I have over that last few years been setting up a system of computers around my home, and now that the last one is in place (it was not planed in any way, however I have decided that I have enough computes scattered around) I want to set up a home server so that I can log onto the "same data" from any one of these computes, the problem is that only one of these computers is really fast enough and expandable enough (one is a desktop, all the others are laptops in clam-shell mode plugged into a monitor) to run a server. I have a lot of important data on the Hard drive, however I boot off a SSD, If in installed windows home server on that SSD could I still use that computer regularly?, that is as I normally would use that computer now with Windows 7 installed on it? also could I still access my Data on the HDD, and would is significantly slow down that computer in any way?

32 Bit Windows 7 On A 64 Bit Machine For Server Access?

Aug 22, 2011

I have a 64bit machine currently running Win 7 64bit. Unfortunately, a client I work for has a 32bit server which I cannot access from my 64bit installation.A few questions here really:1. If I install a 32bit version of windows 7 on a partitioned part of my HD and dual boot will this mean that my machine runs in 32bit mode allowing me to access the 32bit server?2. If so, can I then run the 32bit installation through virtualbox (or similar) and get the same result?3. Is there a more simpler mechanism to solve this issue that I have overlooked?

Can't Connect To Remote Linux Server To Create Network Share

Mar 28, 2011

I have a hosted Linux server running CentOS 5 with Samba 3.4. Everything is setup and it is accessible via Linux machines by typing [URL] in a Firefox address bar. I am trying to set up a local network share on a Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 computer. I have tried entering the IP address in 2 locations:1. Map Network drive. I select a drive letter and type in the ip \12.345.678.9 It asks for credentials and I enter the user info for the user I created on the Linux machine. It thinks a moment then pops back up asking for credentials. It doesn't say they are invalid, just never goes through.2. Connect to a website (under Map Network Drive). I type the IP [URL] and click connect and it pops up a dialog saying "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another".

I have tried creating a loopback adapter and trying to setup a connection via SSH using the guide found at [URL]. After completing the tutorial (substituting my server IP address for the destination address given) I try using the Run dialog as indicated and get a "Windows cannot connect to.." error and the diagnose connection button. One thing that may be causing problems there is that the loopback adapter is labeled as an unidentified network and thus stuck as a public connection, and I am unable to change it. Searching for solutions to that brings up things I can't access (no group policy editor on Home Premium) or results in no change (setting DHCP server, which I tried setting to my router).

Create A New User With Standard Access And Only Give Them Access To My "C:"

Jun 18, 2011

I wanted to create a new user with standard access and only give them access to my "C:" (programs) and not my "D:" (downloads) so after creating the user, I went to security settings under D: drive/properties and I denied "Authenticated Users". I obviously know now that that wasn't the right thing to do. After that happened, my admin account didn't have access to drive D. So I went back and switched it back to "Allow/full control" and my admin acct has access to my D drive now but there are files that are in the drive (not in folders) that are still showing denied when trying to open and 1 folder is also being denied. When I see the security settings on these files/folder it says "You do not have permission to view/edit...etc"

Apple, Alienware / Dell For Laptop To Access Remote Server

Nov 30, 2009

If I wanted to keep my current home computer as my main server & be able to access it remotely via laptop any where in the world if I'm away for whatever reason.

What kind of laptop would be best?

My business is websites, so I almost automatically jump to an apple since its pushed more for the graphics/artists

But I also like the dells & alienwares.

I'd also like them to talk wirelessly/via bluetooth while they are in the same room together to "sync" up.

I'm just not sure which way to go.

I wont be gaming, just heaving internet surfing & web design/work.

I run Windows 7 64 & Ubuntu 64 (though I havent used it as much since Windows 7 64 came out)

"Windows Cannot Access \SERVER.... The Network Path Was Not Found"

Jul 1, 2011

I have a 11.04 ubuntu samba share that is serving files to my network (though I don't really think this is relevant). I have 2 Windows 7 64bit machines (1 laptop/1desktop) that can access these files fine, however I have 1 Windows 7 32bit that is unable to access the files. (I even think it may have been able to before.)When I browse the network and go to SERVER it says:

"Windows cannot access \SERVER.... the network path was not found"

HOWEVER when I navigate to \192.168.1.151 with explorer it works fine. What I have tried:

* I have removed all wireless networks and reauthenticated.

* I have set all network configs to the most open possible: network browsing: ON, sharing: ON, homegroup: Off and password authenticate.

* Disabled Norton Internet Security firewall (also on the other two computers)

Again this server is perfectly accessible from all other computers (even a third laptop come to think of it), so it must be something stupid with this one laptop.

Create A Backup Where Can Access The Files Individually?

Jul 16, 2012

I recently purchased a new external hard drive. It is a plug and play seagate expansion. I like how Windows Backup saves all of the files that you have modified since the last backup automatically at a certain time that you designate. However when you go into the backup file, they are all zip files and have things all split up if they are big, and I have some big files. Is there a free backup software that functions like the Windows 7 Backup program but is more like an automatic copy and paste thing, or can I get Windows Backup to function as follows. For example, I want it to automatically copy and paste the files that have changed since the last time over to the external hard drive, and I want them to remain the way they are. I don't want them in the zip files, I want to be able to access a single file the same way I normally would. I don't want to have to remember all the files I've changed throughout the day and copy them over myself. So it's basically an exact copy of my Library that updates automatically when I plug the hard drive in or at a scheduled time.

Windows 2008 Server Or Linux For Server

Oct 16, 2009

Have been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / Windows 7 mix) and file / print sharing.

I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.

(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).

The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.

I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".

I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.

It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).

I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.

Incidentally as a HOME server there are some considerations that you might want to do to make it more like a Desktop OS than a pure server for example add multi-media to it.

This guy does a great job at this .

Convert your Windows Server 2008 R2 to a Workstation! - Multiboot Installation

Windows 7 VM's run just fine on W2008 server (they should as there is a lot of common code).

Remote Desktop Access Over The Internet: "can't Connect To The Server"

Oct 3, 2011

I am trying to configure Remote Desktop Access to work over the internet. Remote Desktop Access works on my local network.

Both of my computers are on Windows 7 Professionnal. My router is a Belkin F9K1002.

I followed the official widows tutorial. I forwarded the necessary port on my router (I switched from port 3389 to 50000, in case 3389 was blocked by my isp).

Every time I try to connect I get

"Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:

1)Remote access to the server is not enabled

2)The remote computer is turned off

3)The remote computer is not available on the network Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled."

Using Printer Server To Access Old Printer

Was wondering if there is a way to hook up a wireless print server (with parallel port) and use the printer that way. Unfortunately live in a rural area and still using a slow phone Internet connection. But couldn't this setup be just a simple LAN with no Internet... just signal from computer through wireless print server to old printer?? Would this work?? Access Vista Shares From XP But Not From Windows 7 (access Denied)

Sep 20, 2011

I have one PC running Vista (home basic), one running XP (professional) and one running Windows 7 (home basic). There is a printer connected to the Vista box, which is shared.

On the XP box I can both see and use the printer on the Vista box (i.e. a "net view \vistabox" shows the printer, and under "printers and faxes" I can install and use it).

On the Windows 7 box, however, I can see the Vista box (i.e. a "net view" shows it in the list of available PCs on the network) but a "net view \vistabox" gives me an "access denied" error.

The Windows 7 machine has a password on it, the Vista and XP machines don't. All machines are on the same workgroup name (which is "WORKGROUP"). On the XP box I don't need a password to access the shared printer on the Vista machine; it just works.

Extensive Googling has failed to render enlightenment, nor has browsing this forum. I'm sure it has something to do with security and passwords, somewhere, somehow, but I have no idea in which direction to look for it, let alone fix it. I have also read some things about workgroups and homegroups not being the same in Windows 7, but I'm not sure if this is correct (and if so, relevant).

Missing Dns Server, Missing Rpc Server No Internet?

Jul 16, 2012

i have a 2006 acer laptop that just recently decided not to get onto the internet. it will connect to the network but no internet. i have looked at more forums than i can count but to no avail. i will try to list the problems/symptoms but i am not familiar with programming language and don't know exactly what all the command prompts are suppoed to achieve and the like.-isatap ipv6 adapter is not working (some people say it does'nt matter but???)-ip address starts with 169-ipconfig /release and release6 does not workbecause "an address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint"-ipconfig /flushdns does not work because "function failed during execution"-cannot displaydns because "dns cache is unavailable"-cannot registerdns because "rpc server is unavailable"-checked my services and found some dependant ones that i could not manually start ERROR1075: DNS client service, tcp/ip netbios helper, routing and remote access, internetconnection sharing (ics). all failed to start with the same error code 1075-ERROR 10022- netlogon service-tried "netsh int ip reset" but reset echo request failed. "access denied". i am the admin for this computer. it worked the first time i tried it with no errors. now i get the failed echo message.

-cannot setclassid "as know adapter is in a state permissable for this action"-i saw something about the dhcp-read on one forum that people were having trouble after deleting norton(symantc) programs. i have deleted norton programs and think i got all of them (how to be sure?)-netsh winsock reset successfully-tried regrepair, regseeker, and a few of those "free download" programs that say they will fix your problems after you register/purchase them. i figure if the computer can stop working so easily i can get it to start as easily. maybe that's naivety speaking.-i have scanned my cpu for viruses (naturally) with 3-4 different programs (maybe norton would have found something).clean-thought it might have something to do with the registery since i had a nasty virus everal months ago that i think changed it somehow.-of course my system restore points are dated after this problem occured.-i bought the computer at staples and it did not come with a windows startup disc.

i can't think of any more though i know i've tried more than is listed. the dns and rpc servers seem to be the main coulprits but how do i fix that? also possibly the norton issue? i've read so many forums i'm seeing triple and everyone seems to suggest the same things. i've tried them so many times (to no avail). i've even changed the network adapters ipv6 and ipv4 adresses to 208.67.222.222 with the alternate. nothing. there has to be something i'm overlooking but what

Windows 7 Cannot See Server

Oct 17, 2010

Just installed my first Windows 7 PC. It is the 64 bit ver. Works like a charm, very impressive BUT.I cannot get it to attach to our DOMAIN. It does NOT see the server. We have a windows 2003 server. 5 PCs are attached to it through a hub. Internet is through a cable router which is attached to the hub. The cable router acts as a DHCP server, and the new Windows 7 machine has an IP address within the scope. All 5 of the PCs are Win XP and have no problem attaching to the domain and the server can be seen simply by Opening Explorer then going to My Network Places. The Windows 7 PC found the Internet immediately and there is no problem surfing the web.On the Windows 7 machine it was defaulted to Home Network. When I try to change it to a DOMAIN, no matter what I do it comes back with "The Network Path was not found".I also use the wizard which tries to connect to the domain through different means
and while it does come up for username and password it still rejects it in the end the same errors as above.

I also have tried all of this both with the firewall enabled and disabled. At present I have the firewall fully disabled. I've tried everything....used the workstation username, the administrator name....all the same results. Now here's the weird part, if I fiddle around enough in the network discovery window for whatever reason after a while suddenly the server and the other XP computers appear on the network. I have not been able to find out what it was that I was doing that click this or if for some reason there's something that just triggered it.However once this happens if I reboot the computer it goes back to the way it was and I have to go through this all over again clicking things and refreshing in the network window until suddenly it starts again and then I can use the network all until it might disappear at some other point.Still even when the network can be seen and the server can be seen I still cannot change from workgroup to domain.

I can ping the server by the IP number and the server name.I can paying an XP workstation by its name or IP address but only if I turn the xp workstation firewall off.Reading on some of the other forms somebody suggested to turn off the network adapter Internet protocol version 6 under the adapter properties. I did this but it didn't really have any effect that I could tell. However one thing that seem to make it easier for me to see the network was by going into the IP version 4 properties and clicking on the "use the following DNS server address" and inserting the server's IP address. I also went into the advanced settings to the DNS and insert it again the server's IP address also added under DNS suffix for this connection the name of the domain.I am completely out of ideas at this point I do not understand why I can't change to a domain name, nor why I cannot see the server without a lot of clicking and hitting the keyboard.
