Windows 7 Backup Renamed Computer?
Jul 5, 2012
I just used Win 7 Backup on my Gateway FX6831 PC to create a second backup, and the backup it created on my external 1TB WD drive had a name of WIN PH.....CDVR, which has become my new computer name on my network. Why would this happen, can I undo it, and how do I prevent it for future backups. My original backup shows up under my original name - Tom-PC. Now since the new backup, which didn't overwrite the previous, this new name is on the network, so associations and sharing from other PC's are all screwed up. Can I get this back to the simple Tom-PC name? The PC now shows a User Profile for the WIN PH.... CDVR name as well

I'm running Windows 7 64x Home Premium on a Toshiba Qosmio X505 laptop. I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected.

Is there a way to find out if the "My Documents" folder of a certain users account folder has been renamed to something else? If so how does one find which folder was renamed? And can it be renamed back to "My Documents"? If so, how is the best way? yes, this is on a Windows 7 machine.

I recently had a virus on my computer and decided to just reinstall the OS from top as I didnt have anything vitally important anymore. My C: drive was renamed to "Alcatel PC Suite" which is the name of the software I have for my cell phone. When I right click to rename it, I can type a new name in, I can click ok, it asks for permission and I can also click ok. Im an admin and the only user for the newly installed OS. After I give it permission, it still says the old name in My Computer. However when I go to properties of my C: drive, under the general tab, it has the new name listed.

Since upgrading to win 7 64bit I've had a problem where the odd file wont deleteIt's not saying its in use by the system or anything like that... it just wont delete, be renamed, or be moved.I can only think of one example right now, and that's a WAV file.I buy music online in WAV format for mixingI put them all in a folder called "new choons" at which point I run Mixed In Key on them to get their KEY - it renames the files to include the Key at the end of the file nameFrom there I put it in their appropriate genre folders in my WAV folder, leaving the new choons folder clear.I have even tried deleting or renaming the new choons folder but it wont do it.any time I open the folder indexing tries to run on it foreve

i am running 2 external hard drives and a Codemeter Ignition Key. All were somehow assigned their own identification letter (example: Local Disk E:, F: and so forth upon install. I had gotten used to the drives by those letters. Yesterday they all changed for some unknown reason. I tried "start - "computer" and right clicked on each drive and clicked on "rename." I was allowed to rename a drive with its original letter, but when I exited the original was there with the freshly changed previous one beside it. Eg; "Local Disk E: F:." I even tried system restore but the problem remains.Would anyone have some suggestions as to why this has occurred and how I can correct it?

I had just fully patched yesterday btw, before this occurred.
I created a folder on my desktop, say it was called "temp". I dragged some files into it. I created another folder on my desktop, and named it "whatever". The previous folder, "temp" now renamed itself "whatever (1)" (might have ended in (2), whatever convention Windows uses for auto-renaming)
So I renamed the original folder to "temp".
Likewise when I added a third folder bearing a different name, the first two that I had created this session were auto-renamed to become copies of my new folder name, with number suffixes on them.

i got a new hp pavilion laptop; os is windows 7 home premium 64-bit. when i booted it up the first time, there was already an administrator account on it, bearing the name of the company who had sent me the laptop. i renamed the user account and the computer to my name; but the paths connected to the user profile and the user profile itself (under "users" on the c drive) still have the old name. i did some reading and it seems that one has to rename the account back to the old name, then create a new administrator account with the name one wants and transfer the profile from the old account to the new one, then delete the old account if everything is working well; however, i believe that these instructions are rather for windows xp than for windows 7, and i have no idea how to copy a profile. i am not a computer geek and cannot fiddle around with the registry, and how can i rename the profile paths and my profile folder to MY name - or is it impossible to change, and will i just have to live with it? i also hope that if the situation cannot be changed, then this is simply a cosmetic 'bug' and won't cause any problems.

When I try to sort a directory with a bunch of files it takes forever! I have a similar E: drive with a comparable amount of files and it's almost instant. So I figure that maybe the disk is going bad. So I get another disk and copy all my files from the d: drive to the new drive. Then I reassign the old drive to "G:" and the new drive (call it swap) back to "D:". Now the old drive (which is now "G:") sorts almost instantaneously and the new swap drive "D:" again take forever to sort! Now if I rename D: to "F:".. The sort is instantaneously! There is something with having the drive called "d:" which is screwing something up! What am I missing? Indexing is checked for all drives.

So the problem is had a virus called the system check virus and started going through the manual process of getting rid of it. One part of it is making hidden folders, etc accessible and then renaming the virus files so it doesnt recognise them and they stop running. While in there i accidentally changed two of the folders names which had alot of characters so i mistook it for one of the virus files.I've since learned these are windows folders and needed. was hoping someone could post a screenshot or something showing what these folders are meant to be called so i can change them back.

In old windows, when you renamed a photo, it stayed in the same place in relation to all the other photos in the folder until you closed and then reopened the folder. Now in 7 and vista, as soon as you rename it, it gets reordered in the folder by name. It jumps away from its current position. With 250 photos in the folder, its hard to get it back.I need information on the photo to rename the next photo. Any way to make it stay in place till the folder is opened and closed? I can't find anything here in the forum or in folder properties, etc

I had a Sony laptop that originally had Vista and was upgraded to Windows 7. I recently got a new Lenovo laptop and purchased brand new application software so I could get a clean installation. After 1 month of running both systems and gradually moving material over to the Lenovo, I cleaned the Sony and did a recovery to the original, store bought condition. Now I realize that I failed to move over some pictures. I have a Windows Image of the Sony on an external hard drive. Is there a way I can get the pics from the Windows Image onto the new Lenovo?

I have restored 7 Ultimate from backup, HDD crash. Only thing, it will not sleep/suspend. I have tried tweaking the power options to no avail. Thought it may be Crap Cleaner deleting a registry key but restoring reg from backup, then rebooting did not work. When I hit sleep it justs goes to logon screen, if I deselect password on resume it just dims screen & dumps at desktop.

I have window seven Hp pavilion 64 bit, 4 ghz sp1, computer and I have never had so many problems. I have done at least 4 system restores. The screen flashes, I have adjusted monitor display size. Computer will not complete a backup. I hear my dvd drive making noises. The computer is slow. Could not install adobe reader until last night. My last index number was 3.3 to 2.6 and now it says 3.3. I don't know what my default browser is, firefox, and windows tell me they are not.
How do I find out if I have malware, virus and or browser is jacked? My prairie form cleaner shows me my computer is collecting large files or daily activity. Also, I want to know if my computer is recording, how can I tell? I want to make sure the back door is closed. I have scanned with Norton, Windows Defender, Avast and AVG over the time and I have had at least 4 items to return. 3 items were removed 1 quarantined and I have done restores since then.

I have built many computers but am having a little bit of a problem with some things and my new one. My new install went great. All programs installed without a hitch. Fast and furious is the way it went to get everything installed. Now, after a week or so I have started having a couple glitches. When I go to install a new program or update it the program just sits there for 4 or 5 minutes before doing anything and then finally starts to do its thing. The other issue is that I am trying to do a backup and image clone to get my new system backed up. The problem there is that the windows backup won't see my hard drives. I then tried Norton Ghost and the same thing happened. What is causing this?

I would like to come up with a way to provide a full backup computer to my customers (offline, process control application). Currently doing this with WinXP and a hot-swap RAID-1 enclosure. If anything in computer1 dies, can quickly move the cables and the drive over to computer2, boot up and keep running. Now moving to Windows 7, more strict activation issues. Getting a separate windows license for each computer is not a problem, but how to either change the license key easily after the swap, or avoid activation altogether? Typical system is offline, possibly abroad and would like to make the failover as easy as possibly for customers.

I just got two new harddrives for my birthday - one for my desktop, and one for my laptop. The desktop drive is 3 TB, which Windows won't let me use the entirety of...this is sort of a separate issue and not what brings me here, because I figure I can get around this by using another drive for the operating system and just use the 3 TB drive for storage. The drive I want to do this with is the 250 GB drive currently in my laptop, which will be replaced with the other new drive I got for it, 500 GB.
My plan is to make a backup of all the data on my 250 GB laptop drive to the 3 TB (backing up from my laptop to my desktop, connected by the homegroup). Then I'll put the 500 GB into my laptop, copy everything back to it, and use the 250 GB as the second drive in my desktop. *deep breath* it's tedious, but the best solution I came up with to make the migration possible.

I bought a computer on craigslist a while back and it's been working great and all but lately it started slowing down really badly. I play WoW and Skyrim mostly. I used to be able to play at 60 fps or so now I can drop from 30-15 fps. I considered doing a system restore but there weren't any restore points because there weren't any being created every week or so for some reason. So really the only option I have now is to completely restore my computer to it's original settings. When I first bought the computer the guy who sold it to me told me that he'd wiped the hard drives clean and that's what I'm trying to do right now but he never gave me a back up disk or a disk for the OS which is what I'm really worried about. He had windows 7 ultimate installed. I'm afraid that if I try to do a factory reset that I won't have an OS to reinstall onto my computer.
These are my specs if they matter any.

I am wondering if there is a way for me to set up my computer in the following manner:
C: <- Main Boot Drive (60GB SSD)
D: <- Copy of Boot Drive (60GB SSD)
E: <- Program Drive (1TB HDD)
F: <- Storage Drive (2TB HDD)
G: <- Download Drive (500GB)
I have done the separate program and storage drive before, but I was wondering if perhaps a way to back up my boot drive without necessarily raid. It was brought to my attention that if something were to go wrong with the data then raid would automatically copy it (which makes sense), or am I worrying to much?
