Renamed Hard Drive, But It Won't Display?
Feb 11, 2011I renamed an internal drive from Y: to YZ. It went OK for a while but now I noticed that the drive name doesn't show up in windows explorer. In disk manager it shows drive Y:YZ.

Hard Drives Mysteriously Renamed?
Jul 30, 2010i am running 2 external hard drives and a Codemeter Ignition Key. All were somehow assigned their own identification letter (example: Local Disk E:, F: and so forth upon install. I had gotten used to the drives by those letters. Yesterday they all changed for some unknown reason. I tried "start - "computer" and right clicked on each drive and clicked on "rename." I was allowed to rename a drive with its original letter, but when I exited the original was there with the freshly changed previous one beside it. Eg; "Local Disk E: F:." I even tried system restore but the problem remains.Would anyone have some suggestions as to why this has occurred and how I can correct it?

Sep 15, 2011I recently had a virus on my computer and decided to just reinstall the OS from top as I didnt have anything vitally important anymore. My C: drive was renamed to "Alcatel PC Suite" which is the name of the software I have for my cell phone.When I right click to rename it, I can type a new name in, I can click ok, it asks for permission and I can also click ok. Im an admin and the only user for the newly installed OS. After I give it permission, it still says the old name in My Computer.However when I go to properties of my C: drive, under the general tab, it has the new name listed.

Jun 26, 2012When I try to sort a directory with a bunch of files it takes forever! I have a similar E: drive with a comparable amount of files and it's almost instant. So I figure that maybe the disk is going bad. So I get another disk and copy all my files from the d: drive to the new drive. Then I reassign the old drive to "G:" and the new drive (call it swap) back to "D:". Now the old drive (which is now "G:") sorts almost instantaneously and the new swap drive "D:" again take forever to sort! Now if I rename D: to "F:".. The sort is instantaneously! There is something with having the drive called "d:" which is screwing something up! What am I missing? Indexing is checked for all drives.

I have windows 7 and office on my laptop and I want it on my desktop pc. There isn't close to 64gb of info on my laptop so it should be fine even though the hard drive says I have 160gb. It is all free space except for those programs.

Oct 25, 2011So, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it. I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times). I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. Jul 5, 2012I just used Win 7 Backup on my Gateway FX6831 PC to create a second backup, and the backup it created on my external 1TB WD drive had a name of WIN PH.....CDVR, which has become my new computer name on my network. Why would this happen, can I undo it, and how do I prevent it for future backups. My original backup shows up under my original name - Tom-PC. Now since the new backup, which didn't overwrite the previous, this new name is on the network, so associations and sharing from other PC's are all screwed up. I created a folder on my desktop, say it was called "temp". I dragged some files into it. I created another folder on my desktop, and named it "whatever". The previous folder, "temp" now renamed itself "whatever (1)" (might have ended in (2), whatever convention Windows uses for auto-renaming)
So I renamed the original folder to "temp".
Likewise when I added a third folder bearing a different name, the first two that I had created this session were auto-renamed to become copies of my new folder name, with number suffixes on them.
Renamed User Account, But Profile And Paths Still Have Old Name
Feb 1, 2011i got a new hp pavilion laptop; os is windows 7 home premium 64-bit. when i booted it up the first time, there was already an administrator account on it, bearing the name of the company who had sent me the laptop. i renamed the user account and the computer to my name; but the paths connected to the user profile and the user profile itself (under "users" on the c drive) still have the old name. i did some reading and it seems that one has to rename the account back to the old name, then create a new administrator account with the name one wants and transfer the profile from the old account to the new one, then delete the old account if everything is working well; however, i believe that these instructions are rather for windows xp than for windows 7, and i have no idea how to copy a profile. i am not a computer geek and cannot fiddle around with the registry, and how can i rename the profile paths and my profile folder to MY name - or is it impossible to change, and will i just have to live with it? i also hope that if the situation cannot be changed, then this is simply a cosmetic 'bug' and won't cause any problems.

One part of it is making hidden folders, etc accessible and then renaming the virus files so it doesnt recognise them and they stop running. Nov 3, 2010In old windows, when you renamed a photo, it stayed in the same place in relation to all the other photos in the folder until you closed and then reopened the folder. Now in 7 and vista, as soon as you rename it, it gets reordered in the folder by name. It jumps away from its current position. With 250 photos in the folder, its hard to get it back.I need information on the photo to rename the next photo. Any way to make it stay in place till the folder is opened and closed? Oct 8, 2011make a dualboot comp by adding windows XP to a new partition. I created the new partition with 20gb. (From the 500 of my actual harddrive)But before I actually installed on that, I got distracted with a second harddrive that my dad got(for no reason). It had a full copy of Windows XP backed up on it from another computer, so I figured I would just use that for the dualboot. I plugged it in (wired the same way as my old harddrive, but different data slot), restarted, checked the harddrive in explorer - all the data was there / reading correctly / etc, and I used 'easyBCD' to add the new harddrive to the boot list.(Which, of course, crashes if I try to start it. I just wanted to see what it would do). For a reason I can't remember, I unplugged the second harddrive for a bit, started the computer on accident (I don't know if anything loaded before I shut it off), and then when I plugged it back in.Windows 7 would not launch. It goes to a DOS-like window, except it's just a flashing _ and it never does anything even after a few minutes. XP didn't work still.. so I decided to reinstall XP (as I couldn't tell which harddrive was which on the list, I unplugged the main harddrive while installing onto the new).. and when I did this.. it formatted and installed fully... then restarted.. then restarted.. and restarted.. and just kept restarting, never showing any thing past the manufacturer logo/BIOS load-button-message-thing. So, I then try to use my 3-disk Windows7Recovery disk(burned myself with a program apparently included by the manufacturer.) It installed fully, appearing to work.. but when I launched it, it said "Invalid Partition Table" and wouldn't boot past that. When I insert my driver installer disk, it gives me a basic DOS window thing. dir A: shows the files in the disk. dir B: for some reason shows the same. C: says "Error reading from drive C: DOS area: general failure". All other letter:'s just say "invalid drive". (I'm doing this with both harddrives in.) I attempted connecting the harddrives to an old computer, but it gave an error for both. (It detected the harddrives, but said it had an error reading from it. Windows Explorer asked me to format it... {i'm willing to format one of the drives if anybody thinks it will help, but the old harddrive has data I'd prefer not to lose.} ) Looking on google, I saw several problems that all have similar problems (less overdescripptive than I am though) but none of the fixes suggested worked for me. Also - as I have two different with different errors, I only need to make one of them work.)Also - my other available computer has a CD burner / floppy drive if either are required. I also have several USB's. The computer can boot from USB's and CD's (tested), and I could easily take the floppy thingy and connect it to the computer.also - this computer is probably still under warranty unless unscrewing the hard drive voids it. .. does that count as modification of the computer?

Aug 21, 2012I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

It contain only 1 single partition disk that is c drive only.Recently, i accidentally convert the c drive which contain OS into dynamic disk.After i restart the laptop, it shows the following: BootMgr is missing Please press Alt, Ctrl +del to restart Now, i not able to enter the window. I am so worry because my important data is kept inside the hard disk, and i still not yet do any back up copy on it.I searching on this forum and learnt that i need a window 7 installation disk to repair it, but my problem is the computer dealer not give me any windows 7 installation disk when i baught this laptop as their said all the driver and windows program already kept in side the harddisk.I tried to remove the laptop hardisk which is a 500GB toshiba SATA hardisk. Then, i use the other laptop with Windows XP professional with the intention to copy yhe file inside the toshiba hard disk.However, after plugged in the hard disk to the other laptop, under the disk management, it shows that the toshiba disk as : dynamic disk, unreadable.i having problem to backup the data inside the toshiba hard disk.....

After installing three or four updates yesterday my laptop now clicks the optical drive a couple of times as I start any video or music file on the hard drive. Not a fatal flaw, but, very irritating just the same. Did a system restore to the morning before the updates- same behavior remains. Installed updates again, removed them one at a time, same thing. Restored to over a week ago, same behavior! What is up with this clicking. The files start and play immediately, no problem there, I'd just like the optical drive to mind it's own business. Movie discs play fine, burns stuff fine, just go to your corner and SHUT UP!
Replacing Ultrabook Hard Drive / How To Get Windows On New Drive
Sep 8, 2012I'm planning on buying an Asus Zenbook UX32VD soon and it comes with a standard 7200 rpm drive instead of an SSD. So because of that i want to upgrade it to an SSD drive.But I also want to have the same windows thats installed moved over to the new drive. The drives i've looked at all have data migration tools and one comes with norton ghost but i've never had to do something like this before where i didn't have an optical drive and a windows disk for a reinstall so i'm looking for some help here before i order everything and then do something stupid.i don't mind if i have to lose whatever settings and data i might have setup already, but i just want to make sure i have the same windows and the additions it comes with moved over to the new SSD drive.
