I have an old laptop running windows XP on it attached to my router via Ethernet. Is there a way I could back information from my Laptop (Wireless) and Desktop (Ethernet) to the old laptop via RDP? I played with Apache server and that did me no good. Just wanted to get some use out of this old laptop with XP on it.

I don't mind manually copying the files and replacing them, but I don't know their locations.
Anyone using Kodak AIO Home Center? It loads fine, creates the printer and sets it as default. The Home Center seems to work well but doesn't actually print anything, printing from applications crashed explorer and/or the application. I've tried setting it up in compatibility mode.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 7 64x Home Premium on a Toshiba Qosmio X505 laptop. I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected.

Is this system taking multipul backups of the harddrive C and storing them all? What are my best options to have a safe backup, but not overloading the D partition? I do see in; Computer>System>Device Manager>Disk Drives>D Drive General tab that there are two options at the bottom.
option one, (not checked in my case) "Compress this drive to save disk space". Option two, (checked) "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" If this system is saving a snapshot of D over and over, it will only be a matter of time when option one will be overcome. SO, I would think that there has to be a setting that will let partition D delete older backups...right?
Would it be a combination of selecting option one and changing a setting that would enable older backups to be automaticaly removed?
I have got a license for Acronis True Image Home 2010. To my surprise, I don't like it unlike many other folks who swear on this software.Acronis creates a backup image in .tib or .zip format whereas Windows 7 Backup and Restore creates system image in an encrypted folder (with all files and folders NOT formatted). In either case, backup image becomes ready for "restore". So why keep Acronis? Well, Acronis can backup custom files and folders unlike Windows 7 default program (and, Windows 7 does it, too), however, Acronis does "Create full path (includes drive letter)" which I simply dislike. Fbackup4 (free license), on the other hand, does not do it but does the job the way I want, i.e., creates files and folders the way they are organized (without including drive letter, and without zipping or making some unusual file format). So for data backup, Fbackup4 is better, IMO. I remember, WinXP creates crazy backup file format like Acronis does.Paragon Migrate OS to SSD SE (I have license for this, too) is special in the sense that it can copy the entire OS drive/partition to a blank drive. Very good for drive upgrade.

All the desktops have Acronis True Image Home 11 (ATI11) installed and are configures as a HomeGroup. I have been doing an incremental image backup over the network using ATI11 to one of the desktops but lately speed of the backups has become unacceptable.
For a specific example, Two of the desktops are Core I7 machines with GBit network interfaces connected through a GBit switch.
a) If I backup one to the other using ATI11 the backup will take 4-6 hours with network utilization at 3-5%.
b) If I backup the SAME system to its secondary HDD using ATI11 (a local backup) the backup takes about 2 hours.
c) If I then use a simple COPY command to copy the large ATI11 TIB backup file (30-50GB) from the SAME system to the SAME target system the network utilization varies from 25%-60% and the copy takes a, relatively speaking, small amount of time.
Note I get the same results for source systems which only have a 100MB network card except that during the COPY test they use 80-90% of the available network speed.
changing the network cards settings, IPV4 Checksum Offload for example. I tried that and it immediately "broke" the HomeGroup network connection. Question: Why will ATI11 not use more of the available network speed? Neither the source system nor the target system is CPU bound during the ATI11 backup, network or local. Aside from Norton Antivirus there are no other non-MS apps running. Disk Queue Length is not excessive.
I don't really use Media Center much but everynight around 2:30 am my PC wakes up after it has been put in sleep mode. I finally tracked the culprit down in the evnt viewer to be the media center update causing it to wake up. Is there a way to turn MC auto updating off?

I unchecked and the checked them, no Media anywhere."Start menu and then in the upper right corner type in media center. It will start searching the whole computer for media center". I had a file, Media Center Programs dated 11/21/10, when I clicked on it I got "This Folder is empty". I installed this Dell computer 7/10/11. None of the newer files were helpful.Searched the Dell Reinstallation DVD thoroughly and found an icon for windows media center, I clicked it and it popped up with the following warning: Windows Media Center has lost its remote connections to Windows Media Player. Restart and try again.I don't know what to do, Windows Media Center and Player are definitely not on my Win 7 64 Bit desktop. I realize it was most likely installed by Dell but I don't remember deleting it or how.I tried to download WMC on Microsoft site but when I did it said what I had (Version 12.0.7601.17514) is newer than what would be downloaded. It seems strange the it knows the version number when I can't find the programs.

I just got two new harddrives for my birthday - one for my desktop, and one for my laptop. The desktop drive is 3 TB, which Windows won't let me use the entirety of...this is sort of a separate issue and not what brings me here, because I figure I can get around this by using another drive for the operating system and just use the 3 TB drive for storage. The drive I want to do this with is the 250 GB drive currently in my laptop, which will be replaced with the other new drive I got for it, 500 GB.
My plan is to make a backup of all the data on my 250 GB laptop drive to the 3 TB (backing up from my laptop to my desktop, connected by the homegroup). Then I'll put the 500 GB into my laptop, copy everything back to it, and use the 250 GB as the second drive in my desktop. *deep breath* it's tedious, but the best solution I came up with to make the migration possible.
I just used Win 7 Backup on my Gateway FX6831 PC to create a second backup, and the backup it created on my external 1TB WD drive had a name of WIN PH.....CDVR, which has become my new computer name on my network. Why would this happen, can I undo it, and how do I prevent it for future backups. My original backup shows up under my original name - Tom-PC. Now since the new backup, which didn't overwrite the previous, this new name is on the network, so associations and sharing from other PC's are all screwed up. Can I get this back to the simple Tom-PC name? The PC now shows a User Profile for the WIN PH.... CDVR name as well

View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a computer on craigslist a while back and it's been working great and all but lately it started slowing down really badly. I play WoW and Skyrim mostly. I used to be able to play at 60 fps or so now I can drop from 30-15 fps. I considered doing a system restore but there weren't any restore points because there weren't any being created every week or so for some reason. So really the only option I have now is to completely restore my computer to it's original settings. When I first bought the computer the guy who sold it to me told me that he'd wiped the hard drives clean and that's what I'm trying to do right now but he never gave me a back up disk or a disk for the OS which is what I'm really worried about. He had windows 7 ultimate installed. I'm afraid that if I try to do a factory reset that I won't have an OS to reinstall onto my computer.

I am wondering if there is a way for me to set up my computer in the following manner:
C: <- Main Boot Drive (60GB SSD)
D: <- Copy of Boot Drive (60GB SSD)
E: <- Program Drive (1TB HDD)
F: <- Storage Drive (2TB HDD)
G: <- Download Drive (500GB)
I have done the separate program and storage drive before, but I was wondering if perhaps a way to back up my boot drive without necessarily raid. It was brought to my attention that if something were to go wrong with the data then raid would automatically copy it (which makes sense), or am I worrying to much?
I have tried every trick in the book to creat a system image whether directly or via backup computer. I am receiving those error messages; 0x8078011D when I try to create a System Image from the left bar and; 0x81000032 when using backup computer.

I recently got a new Lenovo laptop and purchased brand new application software so I could get a clean installation. After 1 month of running both systems and gradually moving material over to the Lenovo, I cleaned the Sony and did a recovery to the original, store bought condition. Now I realize that I failed to move over some pictures. I have a Windows Image of the Sony on an external hard drive. Is there a way I can get the pics from the Windows Image onto the new Lenovo?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have restored 7 Ultimate from backup, HDD crash. Only thing, it will not sleep/suspend. I have tried tweaking the power options to no avail. Thought it may be Crap Cleaner deleting a registry key but restoring reg from backup, then rebooting did not work. When I hit sleep it justs goes to logon screen, if I deselect password on resume it just dims screen & dumps at desktop.

The screen flashes, I have adjusted monitor display size. Computer will not complete a backup. I hear my dvd drive making noises. The computer is slow. Could not install adobe reader until last night. My last index number was 3.3 to 2.6 and now it says 3.3. I don't know what my default browser is, firefox, and windows tell me they are not.
How do I find out if I have malware, virus and or browser is jacked? My prairie form cleaner shows me my computer is collecting large files or daily activity. I have built many computers but am having a little bit of a problem with some things and my new one. My new install went great. All programs installed without a hitch. Fast and furious is the way it went to get everything installed. Now, after a week or so I have started having a couple glitches. When I go to install a new program or update it the program just sits there for 4 or 5 minutes before doing anything and then finally starts to do its thing. The other issue is that I am trying to do a backup and image clone to get my new system backed up. The problem there is that the windows backup won't see my hard drives. I then tried Norton Ghost and the same thing happened. What is causing this?

After recieving it today I backed up my old HD on to a My Passport I had lying around created my repair disk and set out to restore my new blank HD. When I got to the startup and repair menu I clicked restore from image and my computer scanned and could not find an image to restore from. The external is plugged in and I can see the backup files when it gives me the option to look for drivers but it wont recognize the external to let me load the files from it.
