I can't understand why I even need them, as I uninstalled net framework. Notice how the update at 8:17 AM., KB2656368, is the same as one of the 4 updates installed at 7:47 PM. Windows wants to install the same four kb files again. How do I stop this?

With all the device drivers for even the most basic of system, how do you all go about checking for updates? Is there a "driver checker" type program or is it a case of checking each driver individually?

Does the Windows Update in 7 do an adequate job at updating drivers or is there really a practical use of any of the driver update software

View 3 Replies View RelatedFor a while now I have been experiencing a strange problem. My laptop keeps changing the Windows Updates without my consent. I know this has been raised in the past but my problem is slightly different.I prefer to choose "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download or install them", however periodically the settings change without my consent to "Never check for updates".This is very frustrating as I am constantly having to keep an eye on this, and change the settings back to what they were in order to receive critical updates, or indeed any other update. The laptop was bought new just under 12 months ago and came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit pre-installed.Has anyone else experienced this, or can anyone advise on a fix?

View 26 Replies View RelatedI own a Gateway GT5228 Desktop PC with a 64-bit version of Window 7 Home Premium installed and I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find driver updates for my PC? I've been receiving an error (Event 12, HAL) in the event viewer indicating that "The platform firmware has corrupted memory across the previous system power transition. Please check for updated firmware for your system" My PC originally came with a 32-bit version of Windows XP preinstalled but I recently upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit about a year ago. I've already checked gateway.com but they don't offer any driver updates for PC's with Windows 7 installed so what other options do I have concerning device driver updates for my PC if Gateway doesn't offer them?
View 3 Replies View RelatedBasically, This computer has always been very stable, but now it seems to BSOD completely at random, and I'm at a complete loss as to why.
The time after which these problems started was when I went through and updated a host of drivers and the BIOS (all of which, having been neglected, were hideously out of date). I had also just installed a new Asus Xonar sound card.
Initially I thought it was going to be the new sound card, so I ripped that out and uninstalled it's drivers. Problem didn't go away. Tried switching off some of the integrated hardware the BIOS had turned on when it got updated (serial port, extra sata controller etc), and again, uninstalling the drivers for those. No luck. Had a look at the crash dumps in WinDbg, which weren't terribly helpful as they always pointed to "ntkrnlmp.exe" (which as I understand it is the very core of the Windows Kernel) and faulting process seems to be equally as random as the time it happens - over the five times it's happened, it's been steam, msn, skyrim and "System" twice. I tried reinstalling windows a-fresh (on my nice new SSD), install clean copies of all the latest drivers directly from the Motherboard manufacturer's website (and AMD in the case of the graphics): Low and behold! It still BSODs. All I can conclude is that ONE of these drivers is faulty somehow (or possibly the BIOS, I havn't tried downgrading that), but I can't work out for the life of me which one, and the few I've tried uninstalling have made no difference.
My only inkling is that it seems to happen most frequently when there is a disk access (like saving a game, or me moving some files around), so maybe it's to do with that?
I am in my device manager and am unable to update my Multimedia Audio Controller device. I have been unable to use my headset for gaming and I was thinking this could be the problem. My computer was also assembled by a friend who is better with computer than I. I do not know very much about the inner working of PC's so

Microsoft says that Smart Cards can be used in conjunction with Encypting File System (EFS) to keep the encryption key off the computer.
What are smart cards, and is that the only it can be done? Why not a regular SD card or flash drive?
