May 12, 2012i was wondering if it is possible to boot my computer from a vhd and add it to the boot menu. I do not want to dual boot, I am trying to use the vhd like a dual boot. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Oct 10, 2010I recently had much trouble with my computer and was reinstalling OS many times! XP and windows 7. When I was installing windows 7 there were 3 virtual drives one about 400 mb named windows reserved and 2 others each (300gb) the 3d one was backup. I formatted first 2 deleted partitions, made 1 partition formatted again and then installed windows. The 3d virtual hard drive backup disappeared with all my stuff. Now I just have Local disc C: which is 300 gb and nothing else. So I am missing 300gb virtual hard drive with my stuff, where did it go?

Worth Partitioning Virtual Hard Drive?
Feb 8, 2012I have 4 physical hard drives, 2 of them are 150GB and 2 of them are 1000GB. Both are mirrored at the pre O/S level in order to provide redundancy. On the 150GB mirror I installed the host operating system (Win Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V) and the 1000GB mirror is just a Data drive. I've created my Virtual server in Hyper-V and allocated it 500GB from the 1000GB mirror. When I start up the virtual Server in order to install the o/s I will be asked whether to partition this "Virtual hard drive" i.e., have a C: drive for the virtual o/s and a d: drive for the virtual data. Of course they would be on the same physical disk anyway so should I bother partitioning the Virtual 500GB drive.

Nov 6, 2012I'm trying to install 7 on a VHD using the command prompt. Now it does work but the problem is that it installs 7 Basic when I do it like this. I have Professional. Now I can use the Anytime Upgrade and use my product key to get Pro activated but because I'm in basic, 7 won't work on the VHD at boot. When it asks for my product key upon first time setup, it doesn't work since it's looking for a Basic product key.
Is there a way to get 7 Pro on the VHD through the CMD?

I can backup bunch of data files to make size smaller.I have a Win 7 x64 instance on another HDD that can use most of the 8GB RAM. Now, I'd like to do two things:
1. Virtualize the XP instance and create a Virtual Disk/ Virtual Machine, with all of the Programs & Settings intact.
2. It was placed on a partition of my hard drive. I would like to do this again but im not sure what exactly im looking for or how to search for it in shorter terms. It was an MSI Intel duel core laptop. I would like to put it on my toshiba quad core. Im familiar with partitioning software and image restoration but not sure what exactly i should be looking for to do this. Just a clean Reinstallation of my OS without needing keys i dont care to back up any information except my os which is a clean install. Update Toshiba has this HDD recovery but i am not sure if this is what i need/want. MSI had a MSI recovery which did what i want. Is this the same/similar?

Nov 13, 2011I currently just set up my new build. I decided to go with Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB for my hard drive. However, I split the hard drive into two parts: 2 TB and roughly about 770 GB unallocated space. I installed Window 7 on 2TB partition. Now, I decide to use the rest of 770 GB of unallocated space. I tried to use Computer Management, but it doesn't give me the option to create a new volume from unallocated space. Similar thing happened with EaseUS Partition Master. With Acronis Disk Director, it doesn't even recognize the unallocated space at all!!! So how can I create a new volume or even merge it with my C drive? Do I have to reformat my hard drive and split them again and do a clean installation again?
Note:I already checked, my BIOS recognizes my hard drive with 3 TB. The unallocated space is right after my C drive. There is only 1 primary MBR partition (C drive), and 100 MB system files right before it.

Sep 6, 2012Got a new Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit machine, found that it did not come with virtual PC. Downloaded the critical patch Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu and installed it. Windows Virtual PC shows up in my Start Menu. Good so far. I go through the steps to create a virtual machine and use the option to 'use an existing vhd file' and when I click 'Create' I get the above pop-up message "Cannot attach the virtual hard disk to the virtual machine. Check values and try again". A factual message but completely useless as with all error messages from Microsoft. I have tried the following:1. When I attach that vhd using Disk Management, it mounts in drive E:, I can see the files and browse the dirs in E:. In the Disk Management View, the drive shows up as 127 Gigs but 107 is unallocated space. The physical size of the vhd is only 25 Gigs2. Others in my company were able to create the virtual machine with the same vhd, checked the byte size and timing, so nothing is wrong with the vhd file itself.
3. Tried to create after shutting down all virus protection including the Micorsoft antimalware protection service. No luck4. Tried Vhd resize to resize the vhd to a smaller size (since it showed up in disk management as 127 Gigs, I thought maybe it was that size), but VHDResizer could not open the input file, gave an errors "Can only load fixed or dynamic drives"

Nov 20, 2012I have a computer I am trying to refurbish. The old hard drive failed. I purchased a new hard drive. The CD/DVD player on the computer does not work, but I am able to boot from a USB. I was able to install Ubuntu from USB with no problems and now have a new copy of windows 7, 32 bit (computer is also 32 bit). I have tried to boot from the windows copy on the USB drive using many different tutorials as well as using the windows USB/DVD download tool. Each time I boot from the usb stick, a screen comes up that says windows failed to start. It says it may be due to a hardware problem. All other solutions to this involve using the recovery CDs or partition which I am not able to because the CD/DVD drive is broken, and I would like to not have to buy another one.

Feb 1, 2011i just cloned the OS hard drive in my computer from an 80GB to 160GB (both IDE) using acronis true image enterprise edition.
the clone process completed fine, but when i try to start the computer with the new hard drive plugged in (power and data cables disconnected from the old drive) i get the 'disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter' message when the OS is supposed to startup.
i booted to the windows 7 OS disc and chose the repair option which detected that there was a startup issue with the disk and apparently fixed it, but when i restarted the computer i still get the same error message. i also used the startup repair option from the windows OS disc but it didn't detect any issues.
the interesting thing is that i can boot the new hard drive while the OS disc is in the DVD drive, but if i take it out i get the message again. i've also tried changing the jumper settings on the hard drive (master/single to cable select) but that didn't make a difference.

Apr 12, 2011My old computer was put to rest with a big power surge last week. I had to buy a new computer and now I would like to access my old files. I have taken the hard drive out of my old PC. My new PC of course has windows 7. I am not a computer expert but I am not a novice either. The old hard drive has the sata connection and I have a sata cable, but have never used one previously. I connected the cable to the old hard drive and then plugged in the power cord to the wall outlet. I then I connected the USB cable from the sata cable connected to my old drive to my new PC�s USB port. I haven't been able to access the files on the old drive but I know my new pc has recognized the hardware. After I connected the USB cable to my new pc under Devices I can see a hardware named USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge. Not sure what that means. There is �No� drive listed for it though when I open Windows Explorer. I can only see the (OS) C drive and the HP Recovery D drive.
