VHD Works, But Gone After Reboot
I followed the turorial and tried three or four times to make a VHD and it works but upon re-booting my PC the VHD I created is gone. I can get it back by re-attaching it but reboot and it's gone again. Oh my Bios is set up correctly in case any one asks.

Backup And Recovery - Works With .VHD Format
All,I have tested the "Backup and Recover" in Windows 7, Image + Recovery CD, and it works fine. I guess this future is very helpful for end users without any IT expertise.1: Created the Image DVD (12 GB of Windows 7) 4GB.2: It asked to create the Recover Media, Did that.3: Have tested it, though it takes longer then GHOST's operation, but again for end users it's a perfect solution to backup.* The image actually a .VHD format, I guess that a prepared .VHD from the Virtual Machine will do, 'cause in the Recovery CD Tool (WinPE based) there is an option to add drivers before applying an image to a HD, will test it later. There are of course many other options like "Recover to a certain recovery point", "Memory Diagnostic", "Boot repair".

Boot From VHD: License Error: Booting From A Vhd Is Not Supported
I have a Vista Ultimate 32 bit on my laptop. My goal is to be able to dual-boot ot Per this information I went ahead and did the following:1. Copied Win7 BOOTMGR and BCDEDIT from the Win7 dvd to my C: drive (where Vist is installed)2. Booted of Win7 DVD, ran DISKPART3. Set up a VHD for my Win74. Booted of Win7 DVD, was able to install Win7 into the VHD partitionAll good! :-)Rebooted my laptop, was able to select bootto Win7 VHD from Bootmgr.BUT ... When Win7 VHD image has completed loading, I get the following error:"License error: Booting from a vhd is not supported on this system"Then it reboots after about 10 seconds. So what is wrong here? The VHD contains a kosher copy of Win7 Pro RTM 64-bit (from my Technet subscription)What does it mean by "not supported on this system?"I did *not* use IMAGEX to apply INSTALL.WIM to the vhd.Should I have done that?

VHD OS - Backup
I have installed Windows 7 in a VHD. Then I encrypted it using BitLocker. And now I want to backup this VHD, so that I can copy thisVHD to a different System. There I want to add this VHD to the boot manager and afterwards boot it. It tried that approach, but it does work. It will boot the Startup Repair, which can not fix the problem (CorruptBootConfigData).....Does anybody know a solution to this problem ?

Booting From A VHD
I have Windows 7 64bit Ultimate installed to a Raid partition (install recognised this fine) and an additional 1TB drive. Once up and running I installed the VPC option to run "XP mode" under Windows 7. That installed fine and integrates with the desktop fine. I then created a new VHD and installed Windows 7 32bit Ultimate as a new, guest OS. The install went fine and the OS works 100% as a client OS under 64 bit. The VHD file is physically located in a sub-directory on one of two partitions on my non-raid (i.e. non booting) 1TB drive (seen under the host system as drive "V"). So the location of the VHD is "V:Virtual MachinesWindows 7 Hard Disk.vhd" I've tried to follow the instructions on Technet by entering the following commands at an elevated command prompt. When I boot up I have the boot menu option "VHD Windows 7 32 Bit" to select but when selected I then get errors associated with the GUID mentioned, and asked for the Windows Cd to repair. I am obviously doing something wrong, but for the life of me cannot figure out what. Can anyone help me get my VHD bootable please? Thanks. EDIT: Just a thought:- does the VHD need to reside in the root of the additional drive? Or even on the current boot up raid drive?

VHD Vs Partition
Can anyone tell me what are the differences or advantages/disadvantages in Windows 7 between a VHD created from a file (in C:) and just a regular partition ? For instance, which one will have more possibilities of "surviving" a disk failure and recover the data?

VHD Support (and Hyper-v)
I was under the impression that the format of the VHD has not changed between virtual PC / Server / Hyper-V.I have copied a VHD from our Hyper-V farm and I cannot get Virtual PC BETA to use it.I can mount it from windows 7 with DISKPART but I cannot mount it from VPC (BETA)We have rolled out hyper-v for our developers, due to the nature of the type of work we do we would really like to move VMs from Hyper-V to Virtual PC. This is not supported (it can be done though); I was hoping it would be support with the new virtual PC and you wouldn’t have to hack the HAL to make it work.

Attaching VHD Booting
I asked a simialr question and posted it to the miscellaneous group, by mistake, lastnight. I have a VHD I was using on my Windows 2003 64 bit server. The VHD had a Windows 2003 OS on it as well. I was running Virtual Server 2005 R2. I went into the Disk Management on my Windows 7 RC and did an attach VHD. The vhd was attached and it showed up as being on the E drive with 10 MB of another drive created  , F Drive. I can see the folders and files on the VM, just fine. When I shut down my PC and reboot, the VHD is not present. I can re-attech the vhd with no problems. Can I us a VHD with a Windows 2003 Server OS and boot to it, in Windows 7?How do I get setup so I can boot from the VHD or Windows 7?Once the VHD is attached, should it stay attached between boots?Â

Native Boot From VHD
I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed as my base OS. I've managed to create a Windows 7 VHD and able to boot natively to it.Now, I would like to copy that VHD to my other computer (also running Windows 7 Ultimate), just to save me all the hassle of reinstalling all the applications, data, etc.I did the usual step of attaching the VHD (from the Windows 7 GUI) and adding new boot entry using BCDEDIT. When I restarted the machine, the newly created boot entry did appear. However, it encountered "Startup Error" when I boot into it.I suspect this might be related to VHD not attached at boot time. Any idea / suggestion on how to resolve this issue?

Cannot Boot Win7 From VHD
I am using Windows 7 RTM on my computer. I wanted to use the native vhd support and install a second copy of Win7 in a vhd. I made the vhd by using the wim2vhd tool, the settings were the following: fixed disk size (35 GB) and sku: ultimate. After my vhd had been made I set bcdedit to boot from this disk (bcdedit /set {guid} device vhd=[C:]win7.vhd and detecthal on), then restarted my computer. Instead of bubble animation boot of Win 7 I got the "old" Vista boot logo and then I got BSOD with 0x0000012F error code. I tried many other ways like using dynamically expanding disk or file=[C:]win7.vhd parameter against vhd="...", but they have done nothing to this.

Problems With Booting From A VHD
well I was having some issues before with copying a bootable vhd and it not working. I just retried with RC and I am still having an issue. I just did it so here’s exactly what I did maybe you can let me know what’s wrong. Steps: 1) Boot Windows 64 RC CD 2) Go format drive completely (All new) 3) Reboot 4) Start Recovery Options, CMD prompt 5) Run diskpart, create vdisk, select vdisk, attach vdisk, exit 6) Install Windows 7 RC ALL is 100% fine at this point, I have my primary OS running on a VHD, other than that the HD is empty, no issues at all now I install like SQL, Visual Studio etc that I want now I want a copy boot of it, this copy one I will use for the office, the above one is for personal work. So I get cmd prompt while in my newly created home.vhd copy d:home.vhd to d:office.vhd Now I simply "try" to make it boot off my new office.vhd too so I do bcdedit /copy {current} /d "Office" bcdedit /set {CLSID_Number} osdevice vhd=[d:]office.vhd then I reboot and Home still works 100% fine, but the new copy Office.VHD does not, it starts to boot but mid way through it stops and reboots the whole machine. Tried this on 2 different machines, HP and a Toshiba. Please note all my OS's are VHD's there are none that are not on VHD's (regular HD)

Bsod While Installing Win7 On Vhd
I am using windows 7 build 7260 as my primary Os. I wanted to try Windows 7 Home Basic edition. So I modified build 7201 iso and started installing it into a vhd. After the first restart during installation process it gave me a BSOD. It is telling me that the drive containing the vhd file does`nt have enough space so that the vhd could expand. But i already have enough space left in that drive that is more than 11Gb while windows 7 takes only 8Gb to install.

VHD Booting Win 7 On XP Machine
My laptop was running XP until one day I decided to give Windows 7 a try, as usual, I backed up XP using Norton GHOST before doing a custom(fresh) Windows 7 installation. Explored a bit with Windows 7, for some compatibility issue, I would like to revert back to XP but keep Windows 7 as a sandbox environment, googling and testing for a few days and now I'm stuck here and seeking for help. Current situation: 1. Windows 7 boot loader to boot a (VHD Windows 7) along with the XP installation. 2. the Windows 7 VHD is restored to my latest Windows 7 GHOST image which was created when the Windows 7 actually sitting in my first HDD partition(Drive C) 3. the problem is that when I boot the Windows 7 VHD, it will forever stuck in the stage of "preparing the desktop", luckily I can still press Alt+Crtl+Delete to call up the taskmgr and subsequently run a "Command Prompt", then I could see that: - C is assigned to the first partition which hosts my XP installation - D:, E: correctly as my DATA drives - F: is assigned to the Windows 7 VHD that's the why I can't get my desktop showing up... Any idea I can get the VHD windows assigned with C? What I have tried: i. diskpart to re-assign the drive letter - not working - because the partition C is booting & system partition, can not assign or remove drive letter. ii. boot the Windows 7 DVD and repair the VHD windows 7 - not working - however, when I can check the BCD store by "bcdedit /v", the result is correct.

I have also tried to create a vista vhd using the win7 waik und imagex - same result :-(Any advice how I can get this running?(Win7 VHD's and Win2k8 R2 VHDs are working fine...)

Works On One Computer, But Not The Other
When I try to install, I get an error in the beginning after the initial web update, every single time... It says something about not having all the files available for installation? How is that possilible if I can succesfully install it on my other system? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I am also installing the CD on an external DVD/RW drive, since this old PC does not have a DVD drive installed. It also does not support USB 2.0. (1.0 only) By the way, Windows 7 on my laptop has been running great! But my PC used to run 100 times faster with Windows XP. Is there any way I can get my PC running with Windows 7 just like my laptop, and even faster like before?
