No Codecs Works

I'm having some trouble with media center, and actually also other video players..

I've been trying for some time to get media center running, but I keep having trouble with the codecs.

I'm running win 7 build 7100. First I installed ffdshow and used the MCDU to get media center to use ffdshow, and it worked. But then suddenly out of nothing about a week ago it didn't work anymore. When I tried to play a video-file I got the decoder error from media center telling me th-at the codec isn't working or isn't installed. It's all types of video files, avi, video_TS and so on. I then tried to uninstall ffdshow and install it again, but it didn't help. I then tried to uninstall again and install a different codec-pack. Didn't help. I have tried to install many different codec-packs but nothing helps.

Then I tried to play the video files using other media players. When playing video files in VLC the picture is kind of pixellated, doesn't look good at all (it's like watching the picture of Ripley's daughter as an old woman in Aliens if you remember).

I can't find a solution to this problem as I don't know what is wrong.

Codecs
I use to have K-lite Mega Codec Pack installed in my other laptop (Win Vista x86), and watched everything on Media Player Classic, but some files weren't syncronized with subtitles so i opened with BSPlayer to sync them manually.

Now in this laptop i went to search for K-lite for 64-bit OS, and i got these: but when install finished it had no MPC and it seemed to me to have less codecs.

I'm in a Multimedia Degree and i use Adobe Premiere CS3/4 (still dont know what to install but probably the new one). Also i've read here some problems Launching the game Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, could be due to the lack of codecs.

So i think you get all i need

Codecs for Windows 7 x64 with MPC and able to work along with BSPlayer and Adobe Premiere CS3/4 and Quicktime Pro btw, and also that might help with games.

Btw, i can't tell what Build is my version of Windows 7, i just can say it's Windows 7 Home Premium (can you tell me how to know the build?).

Video Codecs
I've noticed that some video files I play don't have sound when playing through Windows Media Player, and some do. Even though they appear to be the exact same file, .avi, with all the same settings.

Just wondering if anyone had a similar issue to this, and if they had found a fix or the proper codecs to download.

Should I Use Codecs Or VLC ?
I can imagine there are litterly hundred of people asking this same question. So today I ask you Video Gurus to tell me and us.

What is the best route to go when installing a new PC window 7 Codecs, Which can mess up your PC but give you precision control over image quality.

Or VLC which has all the codecs built into it that will allow you to play any video format you need right out of the box?

Im always wondering and Ive used both myself However I'm working on the "perfect" build and I do not want to install un-needed or troublesome applications.

I love the VLC ease of use, however I hate the player. No matter what I watch when I jump ahead I get tons of pixelations for 10-15 seconds afterwards.

Im not a dig deep into the guts guy either so installing Codecs and having to config every aspect of these when I have no idea what all the setting really means isn't fun either.

So lets hear what the "pros" here have to say on this question! If There is another application besides VLC please feel free to add it to the discussion.

Windows 7 Codecs
Codecs have been a problem for most users at one time or another. This is because there has never been an 'out of the box' working solution that the average computer user could install and just have everything work properly from the beginning. There are several decent codec package solutions out there, but none of them did everything I wanted.

I was always in need of a tweak, adjustment, or even a re-installation just to get the codecs I needed/wanted and most of the time, the file still didn't play properly. I've never claimed to be a media guru. My media experience prior to creating these packages was to double-click a file I downloaded and hope that it played.

The installer will automatically remove most other popular codec releases from your computer before installing this concise yet comprehensive package. For a list of all things automatically uninstalled by the Win7codecs installer, Click Here . You won't need to make any adjustments or tweaks to enjoy your media content immediately. Windows Media Player and Media Center will instantly recognize all your files as playable.

It does not contain a media player and it does not associate file-types. With this package installed you will be able to use any media player, limited only by the players' capabilities, to play all movies and video clips. Streaming video is supported in several formats in all popular web browsers. Users of the Win7codecs have the ability to choose what is installed and where to install it using the public redistributable. After installation you can select to remove specific portions without removing the entire package. You can also re-add the removed items at any time.

This package supports 18 localizations. The default is English and the installer includes support for the following other languages; Chinese Simplified/Traditional, Japanese, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Polish, Swedish and Turkish. Languages can be added upon request.

Codecs - .avi Files
I have installed Windows 7 x64 on my HP Pavilion dv6700 with no problems.

Windows 7 rocks.

The only problem that I have with the big 7 (besides IE8 taking ages to open Tabs), is that Windows Media Player doesn't play some files (.avi files).

I thought Windows 7 was supposed to have the DivX and XviD codecs installed. I thought I didn't have to install any more codecs.

I really like WMP and I like using it. Using it in Vista was a blast, and was able to play any video file out there (after installing a Vista Codec Pack).

Is there a way to do this for Windows 7? Is there a codec pack out there that fixes Windows Media Player's capabilities (I have tried installing the Vista codec pack, but no luck)?

Or is it just a problem of the 64 bit version. Should I install the 32bit version? Is anyone with a 32bit version experiencing these problems?

I have tried playing these files in both the 32bit WMP and 64bit WMP but they don't work.

How To Reinstall Default Codecs ?
Recently, well the other day I decided I would re-install Oblivion and after re-install something went haywire and now music will not play in Oblivion. Well, it might, but if I leave music on it will freeze my mouse and keyboard 5 minutes into loading a game each and every time, leading the game to be unplayable. A little background in case you were wondering why I would want to reset Win7 codecs.

Well, I have looked all over google and have not seen any way to un-install all codecs and re-install default codecs that were installed with windows 7. This is all i'm trying to do.

P.S. - if WMP12 is uninstalled, would that remove the codecs with it? and would re-installing WMP12 add the codecs back, or do the codecs come with the Windows 7 install itself.

Is There A Complete List Of Supported Codecs ?
I'm doing some research into which file formats and A/V codecs to use for my movie library. I started out with VIDEO_TS folders for my movies but I'm having some file access time/network issues and I want to access my movies from other devices so I'm considering switching formats.

The problem is I can't really find a "codec compatibility guide" for Windows 7. That is, which containers/codecs ship with Windows 7 out of the box?

For example, I know that it supports the MP4 container, H.264 video, and AAC sound out of the box. That's new from Vista. What else does it support? (I looked at the "supported formats" page but that doesn't really get specific enough.)

Again, looking for a list of what's supported out of the box . I'm sure I can do some registry hacks and additions of extra codec packs and all that, but I'm looking for as much "out of the box" as possible.

Choose What Codecs To Use For Video Playback
I'm having a major issue with video codecs, I can't make Win7 accept the fact that I want to use other video codecs than the built in ones so how the hell do I get rid of the built in ____?

Crappy? Yes, they are.

For instance the MPEG2 codec, sure. It can play a MPEG2 TS stream but boy it stutters. Calm scenes, no prob but once something starts to happen or I seek through the video file it starts to act up badly if it doesn't lock up and no. My computer is NOT running out of steam. Playback of a 1080P MPEG2 TS has a average CPU utilization of 1%. Yep, practically zero. I suspect my graphics card is offloading the CPU and no, the card is not running out of steam either. 0-4% GPU activity when I play said 1080P video file.

The built in DIVX/XVID codec seems to work, I havent noticed any severe problems with it but it's limited, in fact, it has no options whatsoever so if I want to watch a old low quality divx movie I'm forced to live with what I get, I can't start fiddeling with options and try to make it look better as the "Mpeg4s decoder DMO" that is in use has NO OPTIONS whatsoever. None! Nada! Zip! Zilch! That means, no deinterlacing, no crop, no post processing, no color control, no no no Nothing that could help me make the video look half decent.

I have tried to install Ffdshow and Elecard MPEG2 decoder, as those two are the ones I want to handle all my DivX/XviD and MPEG2 files but I can't make them take precedence of the available video codecs. No matter what I try or how often I reinstall those two the built in codecs from Microsoft stays on top making my life miserable.

The only thing that actually work as it should right now is CoreAVC's handling of h264 video.. ;)

So. this turned into a long rant but meeh..

How do I fix this? I'm running out of ideas

Codecs Don't Work
I am trying to view videos that used to work perfectly fine when I had Vista but now they don't seem to play anymore. I tried, K-Lite, Shark007, and VLC Player but none of them seem to be able to play the video. I tried installing the "official" xvid codec since that's what I assumed the format is due to it's filename (it's a video I downloaded). I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Also how would I make sure what format my videos are?

Media Center Issues When Playing Codecs Over Network
Media Center didn't seem to handle seeking in an Xvid encoded video. I was playing back a short movie that my friends made and when I tried to skip past the introduction, 2 minutes in, the player froze and eventually said that the video was not available. If I let it play without interference, it would play through just fine.

Even seeking a small time from a network location would freeze the screen for a about 10 to 15 seconds while it retrained. This doesn't seem like it should be that difficult considering Windows Media Player had no problems with this.

Does Not Play .ts Files - Vista X64 Codecs Installation Failure
I have been successfully using the Hauppague HDPVR for downloading programs from my FIOS PVR while using W7.  However, the .ts files do not play the sound track; the video is fine, but there is no sound.  I tried to install the Vista x64 codec files; the codec pockage did not install properly and does not show under the installed programs.  Now when I play a .ts file I get a buzzing/raspy sound.

When I log in under Vista x64 I find that the video and sound are OK, if out of synchronization, but after processing them through TMPGEnc the synch comes back and the files play fine.  These processed files are saved in .mpg format.  In other words, W7 records the files fine, but it cannot play them.

1- Is there a problem installing Vista x64 codec in W7?
2- How does one solve the problem or repair the damage done by the x64 codecs?
2- Is there a set of codec that will work to play .ts files?
3- Some .mpg files also do not play at all.  I cannot tell which type of .mpg encoded files play and which ones do not.  Is anyone else having this problem?

Media Player Will Not Play Regular Codecs Such As MP3, WMV, And AVI
I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 installation to Windows 7 RTM x64 a few days back.

The upgrade went smooth and everything worked as it should. The new media player got hold of all media files in my new Libraries, and was able to play almost every file I got, more than Vista used to, including regular mp3, avi and wmv files.

Then I did two things. I installed Apple iTunes (and Quicktime) and uninstalled the Nokia Music Manager application (which had been with me from the Vista upgrade).

The next time I started WMP to play music I got the error message: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.".

This is for standard mp3 and avi files as well as a bunch of other media file types. Some files still play though, for instance the C:UsersPublicRecorded TVSample Mediawin7_scenic-demoshort_raw.wtv video sample. Neither C:UsersPublicMusicSample MusicSleep Away.mp3, C:UsersPublicVideosSample VideosWildlife.wmv or any other of the mp3 and wmv samples will play, giving me the same error.

The Media Center application behaves in the same manner.

VLC media player and iTunes are able to play all files that WMP is unable to play with no problems.

It seems to me that either Nokia Music Manager or Apple iTunes have messed up my codecs when uninstalling/installing.

I've tried to remove all media applications from Windows 7 using optionalfeatures.exe, and then reinstalling them, with no change in behavior.

Has anyone got any ideas as might what have happened?

And is there anything I can do to reinstall/reactivate the nonworking codecs?

Works On One Computer, But Not The Other
When I try to install, I get an error in the beginning after the initial web update, every single time...

It says something about not having all the files available for installation? How is that possilible if I can succesfully install it on my other system? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I am also installing the CD on an external DVD/RW drive, since this old PC does not have a DVD drive installed. It also does not support USB 2.0. (1.0 only)

By the way, Windows 7 on my laptop has been running great! But my PC used to run 100 times faster with Windows XP. Is there any way I can get my PC running with Windows 7 just like my laptop, and even faster like before?

Old Hardware How That Works ?
I had some discussions with some of my customers about Windows 7 and it's requirements.

Main question were all times: "Did we need to change our hardware?" or: "Is an hardware upgrade needed?"

So, I played a bit around with older hardware for expamle:

1.: NEC Mate 17GA. It's an japanese NEC with 1.7 GHz Celeron Processor and came original with 512 MB Ram, 40 GB HDD and XP Pro installed. Computer is from year 2002.

I upgraded the memory to 1 GB and 160 GB HDD with 2 partition, each 80 GB, that's all.

Installed XP pro again, and was need to downlaod all drivers again, not one was working directly.

Installed Windows 7 7077 on the 2. Partition and all drivers were directly installed and working.

Boot time from XP: 3 min!!

Boot time from Windows 7: 1 min!!

2.: Sony Vaio Laptop year 2000, P4 3 GHZ and 512 MB Ram, 60 GB HDD.

No any upgrade I had leave the system in its origin state. It had XP pro installed and the booting time was 2.5 minutes!

Installed Windows 7 7077 as clean install and only system on HDD. Installation was need 49 minutes. All drivers were working directly and even the 512 MB Ram were enough. Ok, not for multitasking with more than 5 progs open at the time! The huge difference to XP Pro was: Boot time below 1 minute and the running with the same Office and Excel files, nearly 40% faster than XP!

The above testing and outcome is showing very clear that Windows 7 is even faster than XP ever was! But it also shows, that the min System Requierements are less than MS told as needed!

Overall the OS Windows 7 is working a lot more stable than Vista and XP. Even Software which were not able to run in Vista, like Windows Draw from 1991 or Ulead Image Pals from 1990, are working in Windows 7 very well.

I still have an NEC Peti Scan Scanner (a small mobile Scanner) which was able to work max in Win 2000 and I like to check that scanner can work in Windows 7 as well because the driver is assigned for Win 98 as latest OS! Need to find the driver again because the CD is "dead"! But if I get the driver, I'm quite confident I'll get that scanner back to work.

It's just a kind of fun for to do such testing! It also shows that the new MS OS seems to be a very relaible system.

Maybe those of the readers of this forum, who were thinking about to upgrade or not, get some more ideas.

Network Works One Way Only
I've installed Windows 7 "release version" on my desktop, with two problems.   One is that the network only works in one direction. The laptop can see the desktop machine, and connect to its drives (including the USB backup one) with no problem.

However, the desktop can't "see" the laptop in "Network".   If I go to Network and Sharing Center / See full map, then the laptop shows as it should.  However, right-clicking it offers me 3 options:  Open Media Player, Create shortcut, and Properties.  Everything after that seems to think the laptop is a music folder.

I've checked and rechecked file sharing (all seems OK - similar permissions to what is on the laptop).

I'm leery of doing the wipe-and-install of the "release version" onto the laptop until I know what's wrong, just in case I lose the link to the desktop - which has the printers and the backup drives attached to it.

X256 X720 (1080p - 1080p) Codecs
Is Windows 7 currently supporting x264 x720 (+ 1080) codec features ?

I have opened certain types of DVD and BlueRay Disks and the quality is not that awesome comparing with the results obtained with Windows XP (in my case) ;

Is the (are there) any package(s) of codecs or software that Microsoft can  recommend or supply (do they have such things for sale or OpenSource) .

Will these features be included in the final retail version ? So we will know what to expect and gain certain software for example if the codec features won't be included .

One more thing except the codec issue is the Sidebar - Is there such feature in this RC release ? Because I dont see any .

Will it be present in a final retail (not need to asnwer is it's a release secret) .

Another thing would be the Audio Drivers that are still not compatible for Example with ASUS Motherboards : I use a test Motherboard with these specs:

Name: ASUS P5N32 E SLI Plus , and I have noticed that my 5.1 Audio Home Cinema cannot 'play' the sound in all 5 outputs , but only in 2 so the sound is not hearing like it should ; For example , the Bass feature is very poor - and I have tried to install the Audio Drivers from my Manufacturer Driver CD (the drivers that are compatible with Vista) and after that there was no difference - it was still not working ; Note that this feature is working 100% on Win. XP (with the manufacturer s drivers (asus) ). If you also have a sollution please comment on it .

Audio Only Works Through Headset

Not particularly having a clue what to do I've tried installing the original audio drivers but can't do so as Windows tells me that more up to date drivers are already installed.

Any ideas on how to resolve this problem and if indeed it is a driver issue any ideas how I can get the old driver to replace the new without Windows reinstalling the latest ones on Restart.

Should Win 7 Works On All Computers ?
I my self believe that we should update our hardware to follow new operating systems instead of trying to make new OS works fine on our 2,3,4 years old computers...One of the reasons i built a new system is to be able to run up-to-date windows systems. Will not go far with that but luckly my windows 7 working like charm and IE8 is working also perfect since i installed the os on c drive as main os.

I would like to know if bugs are 100% system failer or it has to do more with hardware issues as well! How can some body be sure about! I my self can amost tell but shouldnt microsoft offer users a very clear notice about the compatible hardware they built windows 7 on-for example.
