Updates On This Computer Controlled By System Admin
Oct 8, 2011
I need to update my windows but when i click "check for updates" in windows updates, I get a message that reads "Windows update can not currently check for updates because updates on this computer ae controlled by your system administrator". I've tried enabling non admin access in both
Computer ConfigurationAdminstrative TemplatesWindows ComponetsWindows Update
and
User ConfigurationAdminstrative TemplatesWindows ComponetsWindows Update
But no luck as of yet. I am running Windows 7 pro. Service Pack 1. 64 bit.

I am a unix / linux admin, so I understand the concepts of running under a restricted user account to protect critical system files and structures. I follow that UAC is Microsoft's version of this, with UAC acting a bit like a graphical version of "sudo". From articles I have read from Microsoft and others, the purpose of UAC isn't just to protect the user from themselves--which can be valuable in its own right in some circumstances--but also to limit the ability of any malware that may accidentally be acquired so that the OS itself is protected and any damage is restricted to that specific user's account and directories.has UAC ever been put through controlled testing to see if it actually works as designed? Has it been shown to stop malware from being able to make changes to the OS or system structures like the registry? What is its overall level of effectiveness in this--very effective, somewhat effective, or not very effective?

I have an annoying issue and it only happens about half the time my computer is turned on. When I run a program in "admin mode", the screen goes black and hangs for about 5 seconds, the prompt comes up asking me to approve, I click yes, screen goes black for another 5 seconds then the program comes up. This also happens sometimes when I wake the computer from the screensaver. I also happens when I try to open task manager. With the specs of my computer, there's no reason this should be happening. The computer is only 2 months old. I have run CHKDSK, did sfc /scannow, all are supposedly clean now. I checked my registry for errors, repaired those. Ran an AVG scan, also clean. My graphics drivers are up to date. All of my other drivers should be up to date as well. If I go into the device manager, there are no dreaded "!" icons next to any devices.

I was kind of thrown into the issue of allowing a user to have admin rights on their own system, eg., download various programs like Firefox, Adobe stuff, and before I go in to muddle things up, I must ask how to do this.....

My brother has a desktop that will barely even turn on because of a virus. Could you upgrade it to Windows 7 and if you could what would happen? I didn't know whether to put this in the Vista forum or the Windows 7 forum...

Logging as administrator, I tried to remove admin password. It wouldn't let me do it and now, when I restart and click on the admin icon to log in, it tells me the system is read only and shuts down. If I run f2, f8, etc. The computer shuts down after 30 seconds or so.

avast! free antivirus; Spyware Blaster free.
Also for non-real time protection but for a 2nd opinion, sometimes do a scan with MBAM or Super AntiSpyware. And after learning about it thru this site, currently doing a free online ESET scan, which the one other time I used it found junk that none of the other programs did.I saw an article stating that most problems involving keyloggers, trojans, scareware, etc., could be prevented by my running my computer as someone without Administrative privileges - that this would prevent most programs from being able to take control, even if I unknowingly clicked on a downloader for a trojan/keylogger.I am in the USA and interested in some non-USA sports, so use free streaming sites a lot which sometimes contain various types of malware.I try to be careful, but occasionally, as tonight, I have to do a System Restore when scareware gets a program into my computer.

I'm trying to allow a user account on my win 7 home laptop admin rights on my win 7 professional desktop so i can send it admin level commands over command prompt and generally do more when file sharing.
Both computers have an account called "Me" on them with exactly the same password.
The computer running win 7 professional is called ME-DESKTOP, and the computer running Win 7 home is called ME-LAPTOP. I heard that setting the usernames and passwords to the same should work on some other forums, but i get the feeling that was referring to computers both running win 7 home, as it has evidently not worked here.
I think the problem is I've got to add \ME-LAPTOPMe to the administrators group on ME-DESKTOP but i can't find how to as when i try and add a new location it won't find ME-LAPTOP for me to select even though ME-LAPTOP has network discovery turned on.

Does anyone know if it is possible to download all the Windows 7 'System and Security Updates' to date as an .ISO file that would produce a DVD with all the updates since day one. I re-install Windows 7 x64 quite often on several PCs and it's always a time-consuming pain to wait for the updates to slowly trickle in from Microsoft. I have browsed the MS site looking for such an item, to no avail.

For the past day windows wants to install the same 4 updates over and over, I have windows update set to download and let me choose when to install.
I can't understand why I even need them, as I uninstalled net framework. Notice how the update at 8:17 AM., KB2656368, is the same as one of the 4 updates installed at 7:47 PM. Windows wants to install the same four kb files again. How do I stop this?

Installation date: 6/15/2012 7:47 PM

I have just purchased a refurbished Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook with windows 7 starter. Not sure if the problem I am experiencing is to do with a dodgy netbook or with the operating system. It set up yesterday without any major issues, a bit slow and sticky at browsing but then on powering it up today it started automatically installing updates. Fine I thought, but now some 10 hrs later it has been stuck on update 62 or 62 for the last 5 hours!
I basically can not do anything and have tried rebooting and switching off despite the screen's advise. I have no start menu and none of the keys are responding not even the F range. So am a complete blonde as you may have gathered on such technical matters anyhow. Should I return or is there a simple solution to fixing the matter?? Screen states 'Please do not power off or unplay your machine. Installing update 62 of 62'.

Using win 7 home edition 64 bit. Ran and installed updates yesterday. Now I have minutes long waits for any program or action. When I looked to reverse the update, "no updates are installed on this computer", is displayed in the installed updates window. Also, none of my restore points are seen. This is a first. I have tried reboots, and McAfee scan. What's next?

I am trying to change the folder properties of a applications folder from read only. I am doing this per instructions from the apps provider to prevent crashes.
When I go to change the permissions it states I need admin privileges. The only account I have on the box is the admin however I did change the name to something besides admin. The account is definitely an admin account.

last night I did the 13 required updates for my Windows 7. So, when I awoke this morning, in my attempt to load up into Windows 7 again, it failed, I tried again at least 6 time, and still nothing. It would get to "starting Windows" then go to a Grey screen.
