My brother has a desktop that will barely even turn on because of a virus. Could you upgrade it to Windows 7 and if you could what would happen? I didn't know whether to put this in the Vista forum or the Windows 7 forum...

I am a unix / linux admin, so I understand the concepts of running under a restricted user account to protect critical system files and structures. I follow that UAC is Microsoft's version of this, with UAC acting a bit like a graphical version of "sudo". From articles I have read from Microsoft and others, the purpose of UAC isn't just to protect the user from themselves--which can be valuable in its own right in some circumstances--but also to limit the ability of any malware that may accidentally be acquired so that the OS itself is protected and any damage is restricted to that specific user's account and directories.has UAC ever been put through controlled testing to see if it actually works as designed? Has it been shown to stop malware from being able to make changes to the OS or system structures like the registry? What is its overall level of effectiveness in this--very effective, somewhat effective, or not very effective?

I wonder if it is possible to administrate a Windows machine remotely over ssh now that we have the god almighty divine super mega PowerShell and everything. For example I would want to manage updates of windows, msoffice, acrobat etc over ssh or be able to make changes in the control panel at discretion using command line syntax. Security authorization should be done with an entity similar to sudo, pfexec etc.

How to reboot Windows 7 remotely from RDP Login Screen?
If I RDP to a system older than Windows 7 OS, the CTRL-ALT-END works on the RDP log in screen to bring up the Windows Security window to reboot. But it doesn't work for Windows 7 system! I have a Windows 7 Ultimate system that I need to restart remotely from the RDP login screen but I just can't.

How can I shut down the remote computer after the Remote Desktop connection was made? "On the computer from which you want to shut down the remote computer, open a command window ("cmd.exe" in the Search box). At the command prompt, type "shutdown /i"to display the Remote Shutdown dialog box. Where it says, "What do you want these computers to do?" select Shut down (or you can select Restart if you want it to restart). Type at least one character in the text box for a comment/reason. Click OK." When I tried the above, the "OK" in the dialogue was greyed.

Trying to update manually today and keep getting a loop of blue screen death appears always at 32% of the configuring updates when re-starting up no matter how many updates are selected, which is about 40?? (100Mb)
Can get round it by running safe mode w/networking then it takes 2 cycles to remove the previous updates, I can then use as normal.

The Windows 7 Firewall provides a basic level of protection against hackers as soon as you start your computer up. Although the firewall can be configured to filter both incoming and outgoing traffic, by default it only acts like the firewalls in Windows XP and Windows Vista, that is, it will only filter incoming connections. Configuring the Windows 7 Firewall to filter outgoing traffic is a little easier than it was in Windows Vista but is still a complex process and is not covered in this tutorial.
This video tutorial demonstrates the most common configuration options for the Windows 7 Firewall and discusses when you might need to use them. If you need to turn off the Windows Firewall for any reason, the video will also show you how to do that. Finally, we'll also show you how to access the advanced options for the firewall, although these options are not covered in this tutorial.

Being able to remotely control your computer is an age old geek trick. But what about changing BIOS settings or installing an operating system remotely? With Intel AMT KMS this is within reach for any geek with the right hardware. Intel vPro is a management platform built into Intel processors and other hardware that allows companies to manage their desktops and laptops out-of-band (OOB). That means the computers can be managed no matter if the computer in on or off, and even if the operating system has failed or there is no hard drive present. With Core processors Intel introduced Active Management Technology (AMT) 6.0 which introduced a slew of new features including Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM) Remote Control. This means that with the right hardware configuration you have full remote access to your computer no matter what state its in. Most geeks are familiar with VNC software that runs inside your operating system, but Intel AMT KVM runs at a hardware level which allows you to go remote with your computer in the case of a total system failure or even without an operating system installed. Lets get started and set up Intel AMT KVM so you can go remote with your computer.

I've maxed out my machines RAM and I'm running out of ram at times and hitting hard drive I/O bottle necks. I'm running a setup with 3 monitors on a 2.7Ghz i7 with 16GB of RAM. I'm thinking I could setup another computer, connect to it over the network and have something setup so that much of the time one of my monitors is a remote connection to that computer. Basically giving me the power of another full computer at my same workstation without having to have another physical computer / keyboard / mouse here. I'm going to test the setup with Team Viewer and see how that works to operate a second computer on my network.

In the interests of "Energy conservation" is there any sort of device that I could use to remotely power on a computer.
I like to have a home server running - but these days with all the beefed up hardware we could be talking of 200 - 300 watts running all day and night when I'm only logged on for maybe 30 mins a day.
If you take the number of people these days leaving computers running all the time thats a HUGE amount of "Wasted" energy to say nothing of adding to your electricity bills.
There must be some engineer out there who could design a really SMALL device which is connected to your router. When you accessed this it could power on your machine. This device would say consume only 5 watts or so -- still not zero but a HUGE improvement over having the computer powered on all the time.
Mind you these days in W. Europe - at least outside Germany whoever does Engineering anymore unfortunately. - A device like this however could make you HUGE bucks though.

My issue is that I am trying to Remotely Login to several computers that are in various locations, and then have these remote compters VPN to other networks so they can process some data. I can connect to the computers remotely jsut fine. I am also using NCP secure client to VPN to the works network. However the NCP session on the remote computers say they are connected, when I try to connect wiht my oracle client to the server I get an ora-12154 error as if there is no vpn session to my works network.
My machines are all Windows 7 64 or 32 bit. They all are connecting to the network using NCP client. I am remotely logging in to them using LogMeIn.com (Also tried the windows remote session).

So I created an image earlier this week, sysprepped it and captured it after restarting the computer.Settings were OOBE / Generalize / Restart. When the computer had finished capturing the image to deploy studio, it restarted and went through the normal 'first run' procedures, but stopped during the configuration process saying:"Windows could not finish configuring your system. Restart the computer to try again" or something similar.I had a look at an earlier thread on here but the answer was similar to 'If you sysprep more than 3 times now it won't work'.

Due to some problems I was having with updating windows, I decided to recover my HP computer to its factory condition using HP's Recovery Manager.I don't have a recovery disk, so I chose to recover from the recovery partition on the hard drive. I chose to not do a backup and the recovering process went fine. After it was done, I was asked to restart my pc and once it restarted, I was at a black screen which said something along the lines of "setting up devices". After a couple of minutes, a small window showed up with the fallowing message:"Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware." This window shows up when the black screen says "Setting up devices". I press ok, then the black screen says "setup will continue once your computer is restarted". The pc is restarted automatically and this window shows up again. At first, I had unplugged an external USB hard drive and an external wifi antenna, leaving my monitor, mouse, and keyboard plugged. But, after doing some research, I found that some hardware installed inside the pc might also be causing the problem. So, I removed the wireless card, disconnected the DVD drive, and disconnected the cable from the USB and analog ports of the front panel. The only things that were connected (as far as I saw), were the fans, motherboard, power button, and the only hard drive. I went back into the recovery manager and did the recovery again, once it was done and the pc restarted, I was brought back to the same message.

Recently bought a 2tb storage drive and I'm using all 6 sata ports on my mainboard! I've got a 74gb raptor that's got windows xp dual boot with my main os windows 7 though windows 7 is on another drive! I want to remove the dual boot as I don't need windows xp anymore (do I?) the thing is the raptor is my first boot device that gives me the option to boot into windows 7 or xp and if I select the windows 7 as my first device it just comes up with the error can't find boot device so there must be a config file on the raptor 74gb that I need to move to allow me to boot from the windows 7 drive and remove the raptor to use my new drive! Any advice on how I can do this as any software that I could use?

I ran the lastest Windows updates on my PC and when it rebooted it was stuck on the "Configuring Windows do Not Shut Down" screen for hours. Finally, I shut down and the PC would not start up. I tried to do a system restore to before the Windows update, and got errors. However, the PC did start up (and actually said the restore worked), but not everything is functioning correctly on the PC (there is no HDMI sound for example and Google Chrome Updater will not connect to the internet). I tried to do another system restore from within Windows and got the error message in the attached screen shot.
