System Will Start With 5870, But Not Gtx560?
Jul 21, 2012
Allright so first my specs:Nexus 80%+ 800W psuCore i7 950 not overclockedAsus p6t motherboard8gb of ram, vengeance 1600mhz (2x4gb) seated in a1 and b12x 640gb hard drivesWindows 7 64bitNow to the issue, when I plug my radeon 5870 into the mobo, I can boot into windows and log in np, but when I install catalyst drivers etc, I crash in gui, except if I disable the card in device manager, resulting in me using the crappy on-board gpu. I first thought tyat the 5870 was busted so I plugged a brand new gtx560 in and it crashed at POST a few times, and then coming to the windows logo and crashing there. No error messages, and then I plug my 5870 (still no drivers) and windows boots up fine. I've re-seated everything multiple times, and checked wires and heat, nothing out of the ordinary.

I got my shiny new Asus 5870 today and ran some benches you might be interested in reading.
Current setup
Q9550 @ 3.81ghz
4 x 1GB Crucial Ballistix 1142
Asus 5870 Stock
3DMark06 20,500
3DMark Vantage 14,896
I am having a problem though and hope someone can help as I have never owned an ATI card until today.
When the card is at stock settings it works flawlessly but when I overclock it even the slightest bit eg 5mhz I get weird figures come up from the core and memory sensors and a flickering on the screen.
I haven't been able to get the flickering screenshot but this shows the core speed reducing etc.
I have noticed when the card isn't being utilized it under clocks it to a core of 400mhz to save power and reduce heat no doubt but when its not at the stock clocks the power save changes the clocks to stupid amounts.

Well I do not really know where to start. I've bought myself a new computer and I'm trying to set it up and completing updating stuff.
And Everything goes smooth until the installation of my new Sapphire Radeon Hd 5870 Graphic card.
I'm not any expert in this field and could really need some help, directions or what to look after to make it work.
I'm able to install all except the actual driver. The drivers I'm trying to install is latest from Ati's homepage.
The error message i get is following:
"Driver install: user must be a member of the administrators group"
Error During installation of newest Drivers
I've tried right clicking and Run as Administrator but nothing changed and I still got the same "result" or problem after that.
I've checked in my Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Local Users and Groups -> Users
And there I've checked that my User is a member of Administrators.
I've tried starting up a game (Aion to be correct) and got this error:
Error Message Starting up Aion
I've tried to install new drivers by selecting the location off the driver but then windows gave me a message that said following:
"Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date"
Picture shows Advanced settings in Screen Resolution
Picture off Advanced Screen Res. Settings
On my Motherboard, Asus Rampage II Extreme, It said that if you were running a single GPU card it should stand at the top Pci-e slot, so it's mounted after the manual.
I don't know if that makes me unable to try the 2nd or 3rd Pci-e slot to test the actual slot or not?

So having recently installed my new 5870 video card I was quite eager to start running some bench tests and checking out the results.
Initially I booted up Crysis Warhead and Flight Simulator X for a quick run and immediately noticed a drastic improvement with this card. Crysis was on FULL settings and didn't even flinch during gameplay.
Windows WEI improved from 7.4's to 7.8's on graphics (previous card was nvidia Evga 9800 GX2)
3d Mark Vantage on the other hand has got me stumped. My numbers are WAY lower than expected as they are showing way lower than with my 9800 GX2?! Also, the CPU score is coming up as one third of what I was getting before and I haven't made any changes to my CPU!
I suspect that this is a software problem with 3d mark, since everything else showed signs of improvement but can't understand where the issue lies.
I am running Windows 7 x64 & ATI 9.10 Drivers for 7 x64
Attached are screenshots from vantage after tests before with my old card and now with the 5870. The attached GPUZ shot on it's own is of my current config as well.
PS - the total score of my before pic shows '0' by accident, I believe I reset it at the time by mistake but the individual scores beneath are still valid.

I'm not sure where to even begin to fix these problems. Some online searches suggested doing a system repair but I want to get some more feedback here before proceeding. Here is the message from the event log:The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AFD
cmdGuard
cmdHlp
CSC
DfsC
discache
ElbyCDIO
[code]...
I realized some of these are not Windows 7 related but most are. While the computer "works", I do experience frequent reboots and freezes. Perhaps some of these driver loading failures are part of the cause of my issues.

Yesterday on my Advent Quantum Q200 Laptop I got a message while starting it up saying 'Windows failed to start A recent hardware or software change might be the cause' I haven't done anything like downloading or anything, it was working fine the day before.I've clicked everything and it just won't do anything.
From the 'Repair Computer' option it gives me a little menu, which again I've tried everything.
'Start Microsoft Windows Repair Enviroment' - Nothing happens for 5 mins then it freezes
'Reinstall Windows' - Brings me too 2 Restore options, the first one which Saves all my personal documents Also does nothing then Freezes, the second option which is removes Everything on the hard drive does this; It Brings me to a screen saying this process will take 30 mins to an hour to complete. It has 5 steps, I left.It on for 14 hours and it was still at step 1 looking like no progress had happened.

I bought a used hp tower with twin xeon dual core processors a few months ago. It was a great machime but only has dvd rom. I wanted to burn a disc but couldnt, so I tool my old ISE Dvd drive out of my old computer, bought new only about 1year ago. I insterted it and a screen came up say that my system configuration had changed and press F1 to accept the changes. I did this and then it faild to boot!
I have removed the dvd drive and tried again but the same, will not boot. I then removed the original dvd drive and you guessed it, still wont boot.
I have run windows repair but nothing. How can I get it to boot without reinstalling? I only have 1 hard drive (sata) and stupidly havent done a backup (doh!!)

I was having some problems with my computer. Seemed like it had a minor virus that my Norton wasn't getting rid of. I have all my files backed up so I decided to start with a clean slate and just restore my computer back to factory settings.i have a Dell Inspiron laptop. I performed the Dell DataSafe Restore and Emergency BackUp. I followed all the instructions and everything went fine. It told me it was successful and to restart the computer. I restarted and now Windows 7 will not work.i turn my computer on and a screen comes up that says "Windows Error Recovery" it gives me two options to "Launch Startup Repair" or "Start Windows Normally"... Starting normally just sends me backwards. I tried the Start Up Repair and it begins to run and then I get an error that it can not repair. There are some problem details/signatures if that is helpful but I don't understand them.I can't run in safe mode. I never made a set of recovery discs, I only have the disc the computer came with (drivers and software installation).

I purchased a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium a while ago and installed it. I kept Windows XP on the pc and had the option at start up of which operating system I would like at start up. Everything was running fine for quite some time until about 2 weeks ago. The system started to "freeze"....unable to do anything! The hard disk light was now showing as constantly on. The only thing to do was turn it off and restart. It didn't matter whether I was using windows 7 or XP.Eventually I decided to do a clean re-install of Windows 7. The installation kept "freezing" at various points and eventually installed after about 5 attempts. I have installed NO programs, internet, peripherals or anything, so the systems is just "as is" after a clean reinstall but the system STILL freezes after various amounts of time....sometimes 5 minutes...sometimes as long as 30 minutes.I am only playing the in-build solitaire or Freecell to "test" how long till it freezes! Usually now tho the hard drive light is not constantly on when it freezes! Does anybody have any idea how to resolve this. I (foolishly!) thought that doing a clean install would sort everything as the hard drive is formatted at the beginning of the installation.I took a print out of the system details and installed programs (eventually!) using Belarc Advisor before reinstalling.

I shut down my computer by pressing the power button, the next day when I turned my computer (toshiba, windows 7) it said loading files and then went to start up repair, after a short while start repair said it couldn't fix the problem automatically, it said to click finish which would restart my computer, I've restarted my computer multiple times but it always comes up with the same thing.
I clicked on advanced options for system recovery and support and it comes up with language and key board inout which is all right, click next and it says to access recovery options, log on as a local user, to access the command prompt as well, log on using an administrator account, I've tried my computer account password using the administrator option but it doesn't work, the other options are ASPNET and SophosSAUNB-(my last name goes here). I've tried each option with my password and it doesn't work, am i supposed to use a special password? I don't know what to do.

So the SMART program has warned me about an imminent hard drive crash for a while. Yesterday Windows was installing updates when my dad closed the laptop lid, when I come home afterschool today, I open the lid and it is frozen. Windows warns not to power off during the updates but since it is frozen I have no choice so I power it off. I have constantly getting BSODs, and have to do a system restore everyday so I was not too worried when it wouldn't start up. So i hit f11 when i turn on my computer and it takes me to the HP Recovery Manager, HOWEVER this time the option to do a System Restore was greyed out and I can't click it! I don't have working recovery CDs so what can I do about this?? My new hard drive is also coming in tomorrow, but i won't be able to replace my failing hard drive when my Pc can't even start up now, and I can't do a system recovery to fix it...

At first it started with me downloading Cataclyst Control Center to update my graphics card wich is a X-fire ATI 5000 series. There apeared a black border around my screen of around 1 inch, but wherever I chekked the resolution showed it was my native 1920x1080, while still showing the black border.I tried de-installing CCC at that point but it didn't work, I also tried a system restore, but that didn't work either. I formatted my pc to factory defaults at that point. After a month I started using the pc again, and when playing Battlefield 3 I got an error that my graphocs card was failing or something. So this time I went to the device manager and tired updating it there, but it automaticly installed CCC again and my resolution got screwed again.I found a solution from: [Solved] 4870 not displaying 1920x1080 on Acer H233H - ATI - Graphic-Displays."I just went through this myself with an Acer P235H. The problem has nothing to do with Acer, and everything to do with ATI. You see, ATI assumes that you'll use your HDMI cable to hook up to a TV. Since most TVs are configured with overscan (i.e. the edges of the broadcasted image don't appear), ATI aggressively defaults to shrinking the image by 15% when using HDMI to ensure that the entire desktop will be visible.
The solution is to install the ATI Catalyst Control Center, available from their website. There's a section called something like "desktops & displays." On the bottom of that tab will be an area with a small icon of a monitor. Right click on that and select "Configure..." One of the tabs that shows up has a slider for display scaling. Move the slider to 0%, and voila! It was for my wife's computer. I had already promised to reduce the cable clutter by having a single thin cable for both audio and video, so not getting HDMI working would have entailed a serious loss of face."So I tried looking in the CCC, but found no such option, and then went to the website to update CCC. I got the latest version, and again found no such option. I chose to do a system restore and never again try to update my drivers for the sake of having a normal screen. When the restore was finished it automaticly restarted my pc, and I got to the password screen (with normal resolution now) and typed in my password, after that I got a blackish screen with only my mouse on it, wich I could still move.I restared my pc again then and this time I didnt even get to the password screen, it just straight out went to the blackish screen with my mouse on it after the welcome screen.
