System Restore Vs Full Registry Backup?

Apr 25, 2011

While System Restore usually does what it is supposed to do, sometimes it doesn't. When I am intending to do something a bit drastic or unusual on my desktop now, I routinely make a full registry backup. (Start/Run/type REGEDIT/OK/File/Export. Name and save the file in Documents) On my machine this takes 20 - 30 secs and results in a file around 200 MB. I have never had to use one of these backups to restore this machine so far

However, when I try to update the registry with it I get an error message saying 'cannot import.

Backup Files Before Doing Full Restore, But Don't Have The Password For User Account

Jul 28, 2012

I'm trying to backup the pictures, music, and videos that are saved on my buddies laptop. He forgot the password for the main account and whenever I try to transfer files to an external hard drive, a screen pops up and tells me to it cannot transfer files without password. Is there anyway to get around this? EDIT: I thought maybe it would be important to add that the account that I'm using to get access to the files must not have permissions to change anything on the computer. Don't ask me how my friend figured out how to restrict himself from changing anything on the computer, but he did and this general lack of knowledge about computers, likely got in into the trouble, that now is going to require me to do a full restore.

System Backup & Restore Will Not Restore Bookmarks Or E-mails?

Feb 9, 2012

OK, so a couple of days ago, my HP desktop crashed and then went through the whole System Recovery loop(I couldn't login to Safe mode, wouldn't let me past the System Recovery Screen). Well I backed up the entire C drive using Backup your files in the menu. Then it shows you all the file types it will back up; i.e photos, videos, e-mails and bookmarks. So I did that to an external hard drive and it comes out to 143GB.Now comes my problem. I've been able to copy everything from the external hard drive using RecoveryMgr.exe which opens the WIM files and saves them to my C: hard drive under System Recovery Files. However it does not seem to work when it comes to putting in my old Thunderbird e-mails, contacts and such or in Firefox to restore my bookmarks, saved passwords.

Create A Full System Backup For Windows 7?

Apr 23, 2012

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit with SP1 (OEM). I have already installed the Windows and activated online. Also i have installed all my motherboards drivers such as audio, lan, raid and gpu.The whole process took me around 1 hour 30 mins.Next month i'm planning to format my hdd and clean my pc (cleaning the dust from the fans, cpu).I do that every month. In the future i don't want to install Windows all over again (by installing it from a disc) it takes too long for my liking. Also with my OEM version of Windows i think you're only allowed 3 times activation by going online, then after that you have to call up Microsoft which is a hassle. What i want:

* I want to create a full system image of my whole hdd/windows/pc

* After a month or so i insert a disc or from another hdd and copy the entire image to a new hdd or a formatted hdd and have all my previous windows all installed with activated and with all drivers.

How Create Incremental Full System Backup ?

Nov 3, 2009

It is difficult for me to distinguish what parts of the Back up and restore screen apply just to creating a full backup and and which apply just to creating a file backup.

I know I can create a system Image by clicking in the upper left hand area of the screen (the create a system image link). But it is not clear to me how to create an incremental backup of a system image. Do I just select "Create a system Image" again, and Win 7 is smart enough to do an incremental system image backup automatically, or do I need to create some sort of schedule?

It is difficult to tell if schedules apply only to file backups or if they apply to creating a full system backup too.

Suddenly I found on one day that my user folder became 25GB without any reason. When looking into it and calculated all subfolders it even did not come to 1GB.So the C drive is almost full and I have no idea for the reason.

System Restore From A Previous Backup?

May 8, 2012

I have a Toshiba Satellite A505 laptop. In my experience, Toshiba has one of the worst system recovery modules which takes ages to restore. To avoid this issue, I restored my machine to factory settings, deleted crapware, updated and backed up using the tool built into Windows 7.Now after a while, I successfully messed up the system that it takes 5 minutes to boot and is as slow as a turtle. I am considering system restore using the backup I made on external HDD.My question is, if I restore using this backup, - Will it delete ALL the data put on this machine AFTER the backup was made?- Will it completely restore SYSTEM to the backup settings? i.e. deleting the folders and registry entries added by the programs installed

I then discovered windows system restore was not working would not start. Even when I enabled the in services shadow copy I set it so on the first failure it would restart which it did. It had a dependency RPc I set that to automatic when I log on. I do not know what the default settings are for these; I would have thought start up if its monitoring your hard drive.

System Image works fine, easy transfer works fine and both quick, but when I click on backup now, the progress bar in Windows Backup stops at 7% and won't continue any further.

I'm going t oleave this overnight to see if this will assist in any way, but this normally takes under 10 minutes.

I've been in event viewer but not being a system guy I really don't know what i'm looking at or should be looking for.

Backup & Restore System And Program Files To A New OS Install

Dec 19, 2012

I recently purchased a new Toshiba 1tb HDD. My old WD 1tb HDD has been giving me trouble of late. I occasionally get the BSOD. Also, on occasion, when I reboot the computer it automatically runs the chkdsk program and reports several bad clusters. However the chkdsk program never seems to flag the bad clusters, so periodically, when I reboot, it runs and reports them again.

I would like to image or backup all of the files on my problem HDD, then do a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit (my current OS) to the new HDD, then restore the cloned or image system and program files to the new HDD. I don't want to have to go through the process of reinstalling everything again, when everything seems to be working okay. Since the Win 7 image program makes and exact image of the HDD, then to use that program would cause the new install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit to be overwritten by the image restore. Therefore, if there should be corrupt data under a bad cluster from the old HDD, that data would not be transferred and my existing problem would be transferred to the new HDD.

On the other hand, if I do a disk clone, I am not sure that the existing programs would continue to operate on the new HDD, and would require a fresh install of each program after the fresh install of the Win 7 OS! I would have then wasted my time doing a transfer of program/data files to my newly formatted and freshly installed OS.

Does anyone know of any program (Acronis True Image, Paragon, Norton Ghost, Macrium Reflect, etc.) that will let you image or clone the program and data (incuding the necessary operational files such as: Win32 system files, activation files, etc.) so that they will work correctly on the fresh install of the OS?

New Registry Backup Tool

Jun 1, 2012

I received Don's permission to tell you about this program. It is for the average user like me who cannot run ERUNT on Win 7 with a schedule and without the hard workarounds. It is being released from Beta Sunday June 3rd '12'.I have system restore and Acronis but sometimes you cannot get to system restore from within windows or for corruption issues and Acronis takes awhile. This can be found @ tweaking.com where the owner, Shane has developed this for the normal user. Read the threads about it, watch the videos etc. It is so ez with three tabs to backup, restore and settings. There are even shots to show you how to restore if youcan't boot up. The last part was too hard for me so he made it easier. I only know him because he replied to my request for an ERUNT replacement -he was the only one of ten people. It is going to have videos, tutorials and prntscns shots to make it ez.I asked around for along time because so many techs swear by ERUNT and I wanted it or a replacement. Unfortunatley the author of ERUNT developed it up to XP but Win 7 users were stuck unless very techy. This is what I was avidly looking for and he said awhile ago he woud do it.So, if you are like me and make errors you would like to erase, add another backup tool to your toolbox. It is freeware and he promises there are no nasties.

Registry Settings For A Backup?

Oct 11, 2011

im needing to backup some applications, it would make things a whole lot easier when reinstalling windows. isnt there an application where i can either point it to the main executable of a program, or its shortcut in teh start menu and this program will read into the uninstall and grab all the registry data into a file, so that i can save this info along with the directory of teh application itself?

This way i can cut and paste the app over to the new location (another operating system of the same type) then run this application that will spit the registry entries in for the app. Then i can create a shortcut and when i run it i dont want it to complain about any registry problems, etc.

Registry Backup In Windows 7

Nov 5, 2011

I have been using WIN 7 for some time now and , until lately , had no reason to backup the Registry. However due to a problem I had with MS Office , it became advisable to take the precaution of creating a Registry Backup before proceeding with some changes there. It seems the Registry Backup procedure described in these Forums is more involved than it was in XP if I have interpreted the instructions correctly. whether such a Backup can be done by simply going into Regedit and , assuming a full Registry Backup id desired, , right clicking on the "Computer" icon there and selecting "EXPORT" and then choosing a name for the resulting file and a destination to save it ?

Backup External Drive Seen By My Computer, But Not Backup & Restore

May 25, 2012

I'm running Windows 7 64x Home Premium on a Toshiba Qosmio X505 laptop. I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected.
