With view hidden/system/suffix the system/boot files that are available at the drive where Windows 7 is installed is DebugTraceAP.log hiberfil.sys (not sure if this is for Windows) and pagefile.sys. The rest of the non-folder Windows System files are scattered throughout my other drives.
AUTOEXEC.BAT, boot.ini, bootmgr, CONFIG.SYS, IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, NTDETECT.COM, ntldr are located at drive D. Last time I tested before I formatted yesterday due to forcefully deleting the system files in my other drives, there were 3 drives that cannot be removed even though these drives don't have any programs in them just some of my archives.
Is there a way for Windows 7 to only use the installed Windows drive for all the system files?
how to move all my files from my internal harddrive to my external harddrive. Everytime I try to transfer my files it will transfer for like 1GB and then it will freeze and restart.
am trying to do a backup of my Win 7 system drive (C, but the backup utility is saying that it must backup by non-system drives (E: and H, which happen to have "System Volume Information" folders on them. They are not system drives. E: is my main utilities drive and H: is my games drive.Somehow, Windows thinks they are system drives, when in reality they aren't.Any ideas on how to change them? When I go in to Disk Management, they are not showing as system drives. They are all partitions on the same hard drive, but there are other partitions not included in the backup.
Laptop: Toshiba satellite C660 12 I simply used "Windows 7 USB/DVD" to burn ISO Windows 7 (64 bit/ 32 bit - Both versions contained in the same ISO file) to a DVD disc and to a USB Flash.Before installation, I used "MiniTool� Partition Wizard" ISO bootable version (I burned it to CD), And format all drives (So, there is no OS installed after formatting).I format all drives to NFTS format, I set one drive as primary and set it active. So there is no problem with formatting. This Window completed successfully, and prepared to reboot. After reboot it displays a black screen with scattered alt characters. the characters has no specific order. A blinking cursor after the last line........ Just reference to alt charachters: 1, 2 That black screen (with characters) remain without any change, I wait for 15 minutes but no thing happened, I press many keys but no response even Alt+Ctrl+Delete for reboot. I tried booting and installing it again but from the DVD disc, the same scenario happened.
(Edit) Update:It seems that after the first reboot the screen shown is the same as the screen when choosing HDD/SSD Toshiba MK3265GSXW (instead of booting from USB or DVD)
I am using Windows 7, My desk top computers has three hard drives, the "C" with just the programmers and other system files, the other two hard drives (all SATA) are used with my main files (E & F) . Drives E & F are set as "Shared drives " I often update files between my Toshiba laptop (also using Windows7) and vice versa. I have a hard wired network connection between these two computers. Now my question why are so many temp files being added to my shared hard drives, I have only noticed this recently, I certainly did not get these when I had an XP Pro set-up, and between four computers. Is this problem associated with me allowing shared use between computers? I am also running office 2010 on both these computers. My emails are using outlook and IMAP, both computers emails systems are always synchronized, I think this is a feature of MS Office 2010, and is very helpful.
What happens if I delete these temp files? I am enclosing a copy of the temp files on my "e" drive so you can see.
hefrom few days there is a problem in my hp laptop.files cannot be written to any pendrives from my laptop..but i can copy files to my laptop when i insert the pendrive.
I have win 7 home premium on one tower and win 7 pro. on another. My question is can I save a system iso of each one on usb flash drives in case of a crash? My home premium c:/ drive shows 445gb. free from 465gb. so would I have to use at least a 20gb. flash drive. I know New Egg has a large selection of flash drives. I have a second hd in my pro system I used to save a complete iso backup on it.
I am trying to upgrade the hard drive which has my operating system on itI disconnect all drives except the one which has the operating system and the new drive which will replace the old one.I use Norton ghost to copy from the old to the new but when i connect the new drive only it does not boot into windows.I beleive i have to make the partition of the new drive as active but at what stage do i have to do this?
I have discovered an issue with Windows 7 that has become quite annoying. I have tested it with many scenarios and the issue continues to exist.
If you try to delete a file off an additional hard drive (meaning not the primary drive) the system will delete it permanently. It will not ask you to move it to the Recycle Bin, it will just ask if you want to permanently delete the file. Any file on the drive will move to the Recycle Bin with no problem.
Also, files within archives (zip files) will permanently delete even if the archive is on the primary drive.

I also got a new 1TB hard drive while preserving my previous two hard drives which added up to 500GB, keeping them as slaves.I installed Windows 7 Home Premium (my previous OS was Vista), and everything is working fine. However, I would like to clear out the stuff in my previous hard drives because a large portion of the files in the "Program Files" folder is not usable any more, seeing as a large portion of them requires the corresponding registry keys to work (due to a fresh OS install).
My question is this: Do I have to follow any specific procedures when removing these files, or can I just delete them? I don't see how it can cause any harm to my registry since all the keys in the registry for the old files are no longer there.I don't think my computer's specifications are important, but I will gladly provide them if necessary.
I have an HP Quad Core computer that came with two hard drives.I installed Windows 7 32 bit a year ago. The disk also came with a 64 bit version but the upgrade required a clean install.If I decide to install the 64 bit version, do I lose everything on both drives?
I'm having issues with transferring data between hard drives in my system. I have 3 500 GB drives in my system connected via esata. Just a few minutes ago I tried transferring 24.1 GB from one hard drive to another and it took forever I was getting under 10 MB per second. Once I got everything transferred I created a folder in the drive I moved everything to and then moved the same 24.1 GB plus another folder that was 10 GB and everything transferred into the folder instant, so fast I couldn't every look to see how long it was taking cause it was there the minutes I moved the folders to the new folder. Why did it take so long transferring that same data from one hard drive to another one in my system?? I should be getting a whole lot more than 10 MB per second.
I just reformatted my HD and installed Windows 7-64 Ultimate again. Since I have been using Windows 7, I know most of the tweaks, but don�t recall how I fixed this one. When in Windows Explorer, under Computer, I see all of my hard drives, but also see a drive for System Reserved. What tweak do I need so that I don�t see the system reserved?
I have two hard drives, one is SATA 500gb and the other is IDE 150gb. I had Windows 7 on the SATA and an old Ubuntu on the IDE hard drive. I hardly ever used Ubuntu and got tired of GRUB coming up every time I booted asking which OS I want so I decided to uninstall it. I wanted to go ahead and reformat the drive so I used an old Windows XP cd I have to reformat the 150g IDE drive. It wouldn't let me just reformat without installing XP so I went ahead and did that.So now whenever I turn on the PC it automatically boots into Windows XP. In XP I can see both drives, my 500gb with all my files and Windows 7 and the 150gb with just XP on it. In my BIOS the SATA 500gb is set as the main hdd, and is set as #1 in the boot priority (IDE hdd is not anywhere in boot priority). When I bring up the boot list and choose the SATA HDD it just brings up a BIOS flasher, no Windows 7.
I'm about to install windows 7 64bit, onto a new system, with 3 hard drives. One for OS and Data. Second one (SSD) will only be used for caching - fast boot. Third one for -printer-pagefile etc. System is ASUS P8Z77-V deluxe, which has UEFI. Do I need MBR partitions or GPT Partitions.
I have a Toshiba Satellite L655-1EM laptop running windows 7 home premium 64bit.OEM came pre-installed. I've had the laptop about 6 months.It works great but I seem to get the BSOD quite a lot. I noticed it only seems to happens when I'm using either of my external hard drives or SD cards. Usually when I am transferring a batch of large files between drives.
a number of backup copies of large files on external USB-connected NTFS drives differed from the source versions still on my hard drive. I also discovered that I could reproduce the issue with newly-copied files.Here are the specifics of the issue, following a series of experiments:
- On my system, copies of large files, files typically larger than 500MB, are corrupted (altered) roughly 30% of the time when copying them under Windows 7 64-bit to USB-connected NTFS-formatted external drives.
- No error occurs / no error message appears during the copy
- The file size of copy is always identical, whether or not data was altered during the copy process.
- File differences are confirmed via either the command-line "FC" command or a utility such as WinDiff
- The issue impacts copies made via the Windows GUI -OR- via command-line copy or xcopy
- The issue occurs with multiple external USB NTFS-formatted drives, no matter what make or model.
- Subsequent attempts to copy an affected file will ultimately yield an identical copy. This would seem to rule out interference by an external program such as an anti-virus program (and the only AV I am running is Microsoft Security Essentials)
- The USB drives involved pass error checks, and copies made to these drives on other (non Windows 7) systems produce identical copies
- So far, the third party utility "TeraCopy" manages to consistently produce clean copies, and therefore is a temporary workaround. This utility apparently works because it, by default, bypasses the NTFS memory caching operation used by the Windows 7 OS...a caching system which I have so far found no way of disabling.
- The problem does not appear to impact relatively small files (1 to 100MB or so). I have not found any particular threshold, but I have seen the issue impact numerous files in the 500MB neighborhood.
- The problem seems to date at least to the version of Windows 7 that was in release as far back as the Fall of 2010, as I discovered corrupted backup copies of files dating back that far. Again, the files are corrupted with respect to the original copy...NOT with respect to file structure itself.
I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and having the same problem. You can easily resolve the "Hidden File" problem by right clicking on the file, select Properties, and remove the check box next to "Hidden". If you tagged all the photos in a folder, simply select all (ctrl-A) and do the same. It solved the hidden file problem for me without having to show all hidden files.The problem I'm running into that I can't fix is that even after doing this, Carbonite now recognizes these files as system files and refuses to back them up. Even if you try to manually force Carbonite to back them up, it immediately unselects the check box. Hopefully somebody knows of a solution. It's weird, because I was tagging photos just a few weeks ago, and didn't have any problems at all. I don't know if there was an update at some point that screwed this all up.
Any recommendations on Fast Drives that can save large files 8+ gigs in a matter of seconds. I have a USB 3.0 drive, even though it's connected to a 2.0 port, I'd still prefer something more faster, besides I want it to be internal.
Is it possible to do a full search for a document through my entire computer system including both external drives? If so where do I start from.I tried by going to Computer from the Start menu then selecting the C: drive but was wondering if that done a full search of the other drives.
I just finished putting together my computer, installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bits. However, both of my hard drives (one SSD, one regular HDD) are showing up as external drives (plug-and-play). If I click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, I could actually "eject" both of my hard drives.
I have a problem with my windows 7 home premium x64 system. Whenever i try to run a system file, such as regedit, or any recently downloaded file, i get the message: "Cannot find the file c:path. Make sure the path and file name are correct" (translated from swedish)And when i run system restore (which i have to do true recovery mode) i cannot find any restore points, they are all deleted somehow. I have a HP desktop with Windows 7 Home I believe. I have spent the last 3 months or so downloading files from the internet, sadly to say that I just noticed that my anti-virus software had expired. I have around 30 GB of files I would like to keep, but would like to do a system restore back to brand new. I have tried SugarSync to upload those files, and have been watching the upload screen for about 2 weeks now with 800 files still to upload. How can I keep my files and restore my system internally? I'm basically computer illiterate and don't want to spend the money for a program to help or for a flash drive or dvd's.
I got this new laptop it is an hp 64 bit windows 7 premium. When ever you buy a laptop these days you need to back up the system files in case you need to restore the laptop.
I attempted to move my Win 7 OS from a smaller (original) drive to a new "used" larger HDD.Unfortunately I wound up with the boot files and system files on separate HDD and cannot boot from the disc I moved the OS too without the original HDD configured into the system.
