View 3 Replies View RelatedI know this is a Windows 7 forum but perhaps someone here can help. My wife has given me permission to use her laptop to experiment with Ubuntu and Ubuntu variations on the condition that when she gets it back it will exactly as she left it. So... is there a way to back up the entire OS with installed programs, settings, personal files, etc? I know about dualbooting but in case something goes awry it would be handy to just be able to pop in a disc(s) and replace everything where it was.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have win 7 home premium on one tower and win 7 pro. on another. My question is can I save a system iso of each one on usb flash drives in case of a crash? My home premium c:/ drive shows 445gb. free from 465gb. so would I have to use at least a 20gb. flash drive. I know New Egg has a large selection of flash drives. I have a second hd in my pro system I used to save a complete iso backup on it.

I have a 500gb hdd with my docs on (was my old C drive etc) is it best to back up here or to an ext hdd? Also just in case of failure I am thinking of backing up the hdd with my docs on. I have acronis true image but would rather using windows system image, because once I've done a clean install to the SSD I can restore using the system image.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have taken many computers back to factory condition and never had any problems. This time, after backing up all my files to disc (15), in total, I have taken this HP laptop back to factory condition. There is no problem there. The restore is fine but I cant seem to load the discs I created. I have turned off the laptop completely, as directed and started it again with the alt f10 keys, which should automatically load my back up but nothing is happening and if I try to open the discs on their own, I get an error message saying that the path isn't there. I have already re-installed my various purchased software but it is the photos and personal files that I particularly want to get back. I have my own photos safely in a box but these photos belonged to someone else
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just changed over from Windows Vista and installed Windows 7 32 bit. I did a total backup onto an external hard drive. Now that I have my new mail installed from Microsoft Office 2010 which is Microsoft Outlook, I want to reinstall all my mail contacts from my backed up system. Does anyone know the file ext to look for and under what folder would these contacts be posted in? Also, would anything change from Vista to 7 as far as the ext name ?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and having the same problem. You can easily resolve the "Hidden File" problem by right clicking on the file, select Properties, and remove the check box next to "Hidden". If you tagged all the photos in a folder, simply select all (ctrl-A) and do the same. It solved the hidden file problem for me without having to show all hidden files. The problem I'm running into that I can't fix is that even after doing this, Carbonite now recognizes these files as system files and refuses to back them up. Even if you try to manually force Carbonite to back them up, it immediately unselects the check box. Hopefully somebody knows of a solution. It's weird, because I was tagging photos just a few weeks ago, and didn't have any problems at all. I don't know if there was an update at some point that screwed this all up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI own an HP G70 laptop which came preinstalled with vista. I received a free copy of Windows 7 (as an .iso image) with a legitimate activation code through MSDNAA. I burned the image to a DVD and install Windows 7 from the burned disk doing the necessary task of formatting the hard drive, etc. etc. Now, before I started installing programs and putting my files back from back up disks, the idea of making a system image right when I first started up Windows went over my head (fail on my part), so if I were to make one now, it would be over a 30GB. Now, if my hard drive were to go bad, can I just restore Windows 7 with the installation disc I made instead of making a system image or recovery partition?

I have the BitLocker Recovery Key so that part is not an issue. Is there a Bootable CD that has the ability to unlock the drive or does anyone have any other ideas?
I need to reinstall Windows 7, without the disc, but I do have my Product Key Code & Serial #. Can anyone tell me how to do that? Something or someone has messed with my "puter" & it's a mess. I need to start over & I don't care if I have to reinstall my software. I have gone to every Windows website & still can't find anything. I'm not going to do a back up because there are some things on here that I don't want to put back on once I get 7 reinstall. I will reinstall my virus program.

The problem is I have a lot of data that I want to keep and since it is about 500GB in size, i have no cheap way of backing it up (obviously considering buying another HDD, but i'd rather not for now). I was thinking that maybe I should partition my 1TB main HDD into 2, and transfer all my data over to new partition, format/clean install the old one and lastly merge the partitions. Is this possible?
