how to move all my files from my internal harddrive to my external harddrive. Everytime I try to transfer my files it will transfer for like 1GB and then it will freeze and restart.
View 1 RepliesI have 2 internal-sata hard drives(320 gig. And 2tb.) and 1 external usb/2.0 hard drive (750 gig.). The pc is an old dell gx520 tower with a fresh install of Windows 7 pro. No antivirus, network connection, or firewall enabled. Processor is a Pentium4 running 3 GHz with 1.5 gigs of ram. This is the problem: If I do a search on the 2tb. Drive for all of the jpegs, I have a total of about 84000 pictures. When I select all of the pictures and right click-copy and try to paste to another hard drive the pc will lock up and won't display a copy status window. Windows says it's not responding. Now, if I right click-copy a single folder which has anywhere, from a few files to several hundred gigs. of data in it, using the same 2tb. Drive, it will copy over to another drive just fine. I have tried, changing the swap file from "windows managed" to, up to 20 gig. Thinking the search was maybe having to write to the swap file. This didn't work. I also booted in to safe mode and tried to do the copy from the 2tb. To the 320gig. drive and still no difference. I have tried this with windows copy handler and teracopy. It all has something to do with the fact that I am doing a search for the files before copying them.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 7100 on a separate partition and I have a Q6600, 4GB ram and 5 X 1 TB WD Black edition drives...Task Manager is showing 33 running processors, 3 - 5 % CPU usage and 1.35GB of ram usage. Is this a Windows 7 bug? Windows 7 is super fast when I'm not copying/transferring large files between partitions!

For example, I tried to copy the Windows beta ISO over to my 2nd computer and the computer just froze. I waited a few minutes but nothing happened so I had to press the reset button.

A few months ago,I bought an External Toshiba E.Store 3.5" 1.5 TB.I use it on Acer Aspire One-Netbook Processor Intel Atom1.66GHZ,2gb ram When I wanted to copy some files,regardless the amount of the files,or their capacitive,the copy just ended well.I use Teracopy.A bit after,my copy is just freezing.Netbooks is working well,ram was not at high percents,neither cpu.I had to open Task manager to close teracopy.Other times, the -file copying- was ended well,other times not.I did a format to my netbook,because I have searched and I found that maybe on my operating system was the problem.After the format nothing changed.

a number of backup copies of large files on external USB-connected NTFS drives differed from the source versions still on my hard drive. I also discovered that I could reproduce the issue with newly-copied files.Here are the specifics of the issue, following a series of experiments:
- On my system, copies of large files, files typically larger than 500MB, are corrupted (altered) roughly 30% of the time when copying them under Windows 7 64-bit to USB-connected NTFS-formatted external drives.
- No error occurs / no error message appears during the copy
- The file size of copy is always identical, whether or not data was altered during the copy process.
- File differences are confirmed via either the command-line "FC" command or a utility such as WinDiff
- The issue impacts copies made via the Windows GUI -OR- via command-line copy or xcopy
- The issue occurs with multiple external USB NTFS-formatted drives, no matter what make or model.
- Subsequent attempts to copy an affected file will ultimately yield an identical copy. This would seem to rule out interference by an external program such as an anti-virus program (and the only AV I am running is Microsoft Security Essentials)
- The USB drives involved pass error checks, and copies made to these drives on other (non Windows 7) systems produce identical copies
- So far, the third party utility "TeraCopy" manages to consistently produce clean copies, and therefore is a temporary workaround. This utility apparently works because it, by default, bypasses the NTFS memory caching operation used by the Windows 7 OS...a caching system which I have so far found no way of disabling.
- The problem does not appear to impact relatively small files (1 to 100MB or so). I have not found any particular threshold, but I have seen the issue impact numerous files in the 500MB neighborhood.
- The problem seems to date at least to the version of Windows 7 that was in release as far back as the Fall of 2010, as I discovered corrupted backup copies of files dating back that far. Again, the files are corrupted with respect to the original copy...NOT with respect to file structure itself.
Any recommendations on Fast Drives that can save large files 8+ gigs in a matter of seconds. I have a USB 3.0 drive, even though it's connected to a 2.0 port, I'd still prefer something more faster, besides I want it to be internal.
View 4 Replies View RelatedHaving a weird problem with a LaCie 1TB Network space. It is plugged into my router and i can see it on my windows 7 computer, map its folder as a network drive and even create folders/new word documents on it.
However whenever i try and copy a file larger than a few kB my entire computer freezes (completely unresponsive). The computer recovers fine on a hard reboot.
Any Ideas?
Also my computer freezes after being left on for a while (this may be due to utorrent, saw some mention of it causing windows to crash after an hour).
I am working in Windows 7 XP Mode, trying to install and run a Microsoft utility called: WT1230: Batch File Converter for PowerPoint for Windows 95. (See WT1230: Batch File Converter for PowerPoint for Windows 95). Yes, the utility is intended for Win95, but I'd like to see if I can get it running in XP Mode. The utility installation instructions ask that I copy 2 files to the "Windows/system" folder. Of course, these instructions were written for Win95, not XP, let alone XP Mode. Still... if I copy the files, the core executable runs fine, but it can't find the 2 files that should be in "Windows/System". So, I gather XP Mode must have its own Windows/System folder.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust bought a new cyberpowerpc from Fry's, installed a 3rd hard drive (Western Digital 3TB). Everything seems okay except when I try to copy any large files/folders to the new drive. I'm using a folder that is 11.3GB with 686 files. I can copy it from drive 1 to drive 2 no problem. When I copy it from drive 1 or drive 2 to the third drive (the 3TB one), it will start copying then sometime soon after, explorer will close itself down and the computer will end up rebooting itself. Sometimes there will be a BSOD and sometimes it will just reboot without the BSOD.
I have tried to attach the dmp files etc...using the recommendations of the forum. I'd like to use this new drive for backups (it's the reason I got a new pc, my old one crashed and I didn't have a good backup system).
With view hidden/system/suffix the system/boot files that are available at the drive where Windows 7 is installed is DebugTraceAP.log hiberfil.sys (not sure if this is for Windows) and pagefile.sys. The rest of the non-folder Windows System files are scattered throughout my other drives.
AUTOEXEC.BAT, boot.ini, bootmgr, CONFIG.SYS, IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, NTDETECT.COM, ntldr are located at drive D. Last time I tested before I formatted yesterday due to forcefully deleting the system files in my other drives, there were 3 drives that cannot be removed even though these drives don't have any programs in them just some of my archives.
Is there a way for Windows 7 to only use the installed Windows drive for all the system files?
Have a Windows 7 computer with two 500Gb data drives (just files, no OS) that I would like to "merge" into a new 2Tb drive but keep everything on one partition. I know I can clone the drives onto two separate partitions of my new drive, and then do a partition merge and resize to fill up all the free space. Or I can turn on view hidden and system files and simply drag & drop the contents of both drives to my new one.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have moved to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 for almost half a year, recently my hard drive was getting full and I decided to move some of the data to usb external hard drives. Both the externals I have are IDE hard drives and both are NTFS. I always use Quicksfv to make a CRC check file before I transfer the file and then run the CRC check after its been copied over to the external drive. I have used these externals in the past with Windows XP and had no problems.
However, on Windows 7 when transferring large files (usually over 1GB in size), I get corruption in the files. The corruption occurs randomly, if I recopy the files again it might be corruption free. This only occurs when copying files from internal to external, if I copy files from the external to my internal there's no corruption at all. I have tried changing the usb cables, power cable of the externals, using different usb ports but none of it helped. I scanned both externals with chkdsk and I used memtest+ for over 24hours and all the tests passed fine.
I use a RT61 wlan card for which the winupdate got a new driver just a week ago.Now everytime i try to copy something to my second computer which is VistaHomePrem sp1, my computer freezes with no event log message.Everything else works fine (fe. uTorrent, emule, www, etc.).

When trying to copy a folder from Server 2003 to my Windows 7 64 bit it ends up freezing but I tried it on a xp computer nearby and the folder copied over in a minute.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried doing this. Example, game files/data from my XPdocs on C: to my Windows 7 docs on D: couldnt do it, just gave me a chime, no dialogue box or anything. Also tried to move a file from my desktop to either mydocs or to program files folder, same thing. After that, even took ownership of all affected folders/files, ones being moved and destination folder. Still the same.
Question: is there some type of security setting i am missing? anyone else test this? I have moved files to mydocs before, and now i cant move anything to there, has me confused now. Nothing special about a file or folder i am trying to move, permissions ect.
Tried both cut and paste, and copy, same problem either way. No protected files/folders involved
am trying to do a backup of my Win 7 system drive (C, but the backup utility is saying that it must backup by non-system drives (E: and H, which happen to have "System Volume Information" folders on them. They are not system drives. E: is my main utilities drive and H: is my games drive.Somehow, Windows thinks they are system drives, when in reality they aren't.Any ideas on how to change them? When I go in to Disk Management, they are not showing as system drives. They are all partitions on the same hard drive, but there are other partitions not included in the backup.

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust about every time I try to permanently delete a large file or folder, either by shift/delete or emptying the recycle bin the operation hangs up.The little window opens and it counts up the size of the file and that it. Nothing else overtly happens. The status bar never starts indicating and the window just sits there with the little green lights chasing each other across it. If I try to cancel or close the window it nothing happens.During the time all this is going on, I can hit ctrl/alt/del and select Task Manager and it simply goes back to the desktop with this window still squatting there doing it's thing. I have pinned TM to the task bar and tried starting it from there but it never starts. Eventually everything just slows to a stop and nothing works which would seem to indicate some kind of memory leak. There are no error messages during any of this.I have to hit reset and restart the computer that way in order to regain control and we all know how bad an idea this is. I've already had my boot sector eaten once causing me to have to do a total rebuild and I'd prefer not to have to do it again.

When the user logs on to the main program on his PC, if there are updates, a dialog message displays and the updates are written from the server to the local directory -- the same directory as the main program resides.
This has worked very well on XP (where we used *program files* as the directory).
It has also worked fine in vista and 32bit windows 7 (where we use the user's app data oaming directory.
On Windows 7 64-bit however, the update fails. It opens the file name of the updated program with zero bytes and then displays the message:
"Could not write to... c:Users[user]AppDataRoaming.. etc."
I've tried running the main program as administrator. I've turned off UAC. I suspect this is a security issue, but is there any workaround?
i noticed something really strange. i tried copying three iso files from my laptop to my external HDD. the problem is that after one iso is copied the copying process stops and resumes again after a pause and after that it pauses again and the third file starts. why it pauses to copy? i tries usb 3.0 and 2.0.in usb 3.0 the spped is around 94-95K Mbps. but once it starts to copy the second iso it drops to around 30K Mbps.its same with both the external HDDs.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have windows 7 pro 64 bit running on my box. One of the devices on my network is a media reader and a local drive connected to it. Whenever I try to transfer large files (350 mb and above) the transfer speed never displays and the copy animation runs until I get an error message telling me that Windows 7 can no longer access my media reader. Smaller files copy without issue. I've seen other posts with a similar problem but they don't appear to be exactly the same as this.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI usually send clients large images around 4Mb via the email. I also upload to various sites, files up to 15Mb. They are all usually jpeg or .psd format.
For some reason it just doesn't work anymore - they get so far and seem to just hang. I contacted my ISP provider and they went through all their trouble shooter but told me that the problem is my end.
I am using Windows 7 64 bit. I have tried IE9 and Google Chrome but neither helps. I use Microsoft Security Essential. I have tried turning off the firewall but this doesn't work either.
Smaller versions of the jpegs seem to upload OK. I haven't done anything to change what I am using recently other than to run the automatic updates.
I have internet satellite using an ipstar modem. No router.
I have a 1TB external HDD attached to my laptop.Whenever I attempt to copy multiple files to another HDD I am confronted with a BSOD.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI run my system on two partitions, one had XP and one 7 Beta. When i installed 7 RC1 i upgraded the XP install. This put all my files into a "windows.old" folder. All very well so far. All the files in this i can happily copy/cut and paste anywhere.
Except the files in My Music. This is a problem as i have a few 100 folders in there(each artist has a folder). The only way i can move (or even look in) them is to take ownership, which involves quite a lengthy clicking through dialogues. Fine for 1 folder, not for 300. I have tried running explorer in admin mode, in safe mode, whilst logged in as administrator (can i be admin any more times?!) to no avail. I get the dialogue:
"You need permission to perform this action.
You require permission from Jamie-PCJamie to make changes to this folder."
Oddly, Jamie-PCJamie is the user im using...
Im way too lazy to spend 2 hours doing each file individually so please come up with another way Thanks, Jamie
EDIT - SOLUTION!
Whilst writing this i had a brainwave - the user on my beta install had the same name. So i booted into the beta instead, and happily copied all my files over. As there's no feedback button any more im not sure how to report this quite large flaw, so feel free to suggest a way to do that. It's clearly not right as is, what if i had wiped my old install, as you usually would after installing a new OS...
Every couple of weeks I get a strange large file with a title that doesn't make any sense. What is this file and is it necessary to keep them?

In XP, opening the source folder and doing SELECT ALL would give the COPY, MOVE, DELETE options on the left hand of the folder. How best to do in Windows 7? Use the Copy to Clipboard, then Paste to the two other folders? If so, is the Clipboard big enough to handle the copying of up to 1.5 GB in files?
