Deleting Files And Multiple Hard Drives

Nov 26, 2009

I have discovered an issue with Windows 7 that has become quite annoying. I have tested it with many scenarios and the issue continues to exist.

If you try to delete a file off an additional hard drive (meaning not the primary drive) the system will delete it permanently. It will not ask you to move it to the Recycle Bin, it will just ask if you want to permanently delete the file. Any file on the drive will move to the Recycle Bin with no problem.

Also, files within archives (zip files) will permanently delete even if the archive is on the primary drive.

Deleting Files On Previous Hard Drives?

Apr 15, 2012

I apologize if this is not the category to ask this in, but I wasn't sure whether to put my question here or in Vista. Hell, I don't even know whether this place is the correct place to ask this question, but I decided to take a shot since I frequent the site. Two days ago, my motherboard bit the dust, and upon the recommendation of the tech whom I worked with, replaced my:

motherboard
RAM
PSU

I also got a new 1TB hard drive while preserving my previous two hard drives which added up to 500GB, keeping them as slaves.I installed Windows 7 Home Premium (my previous OS was Vista), and everything is working fine. However, I would like to clear out the stuff in my previous hard drives because a large portion of the files in the "Program Files" folder is not usable any more, seeing as a large portion of them requires the corresponding registry keys to work (due to a fresh OS install).

My question is this: Do I have to follow any specific procedures when removing these files, or can I just delete them? I don't see how it can cause any harm to my registry since all the keys in the registry for the old files are no longer there.I don't think my computer's specifications are important, but I will gladly provide them if necessary.

Question About Multiple Hard Drives

Nov 3, 2009

I'm gonna be moving from a 32-bit XP OS to the Windows 7 64-bit version. Before installing the OS, I'm gonna unplug my 2nd Hard drive where there's no OS installed, just storage.

Will I have to do anything special on the 2nd HD when I replug it in Windows 7? No reformatting is needed right? Because I backed up my files on that HD.

Single Or Multiple Hard Drives For Best Performance?

I'm using i7 processor with 8G RAM and 500GB hard drives (3); with a 1 Tetrabit External MyBook.

Use Split Archive Over Multiple Hard Drives?

Mar 7, 2011

I use a backup software called Macrium Reflect and they have an option for splitting your backup archive. I have a split archive that I have stored over multiple hard drives (because it is a very large file), but I cannot open the archive unless the archives are all in one folder. Is there some way to make a "virtual directory" or network drive so that I can use these files as if they are in the same folder, even though they are on different drives?

Streaming To An Xbox 360 With Multiple PC Hard Drives

Dec 6, 2009

I installed my Windows 7 OS on a 200GB HDD. Recently, I installed a 500GB HDD in my PC. I used to be able to stream media files to my Xbox 360 with no problem with the media files being on the 200GB HDD. However, I've transferred all my Media Files to my 500 GB (secondary) HDD. The Windows Media Centre on the Xbox 360 isn't giving me any sort of option to stream files from the 500 GB HDD. So, what exactly do I do?

Master Folder For Multiple Hard Drives Without Raid Setup

Jul 18, 2012

I am in the process of putting (5) 3TB HDD's into my computer (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) to rip my Blu-ray collection to for playback in my home theater room via a Popcorn Hour player. Each drive is independent and I will be systematically filling one drive before going onto the next. The problem is that the Popcorn Hour players communicate with the PC by specifying one folder via SMB that contains all of my media. Since I am doing independent drives, there will be one master folder on each drive containing all of the media for that said drive. Meaning, in terms of the Popcorn Hour/SMB setup, there are five folders I need it to *see* and catalog.

Why So Many Temp Files On Hard Drives

Jun 26, 2011

I am using Windows 7, My desk top computers has three hard drives, the "C" with just the programmers and other system files, the other two hard drives (all SATA) are used with my main files (E & F) . Drives E & F are set as "Shared drives " I often update files between my Toshiba laptop (also using Windows7) and vice versa. I have a hard wired network connection between these two computers. Now my question why are so many temp files being added to my shared hard drives, I have only noticed this recently, I certainly did not get these when I had an XP Pro set-up, and between four computers. Is this problem associated with me allowing shared use between computers? I am also running office 2010 on both these computers. My emails are using outlook and IMAP, both computers emails systems are always synchronized, I think this is a feature of MS Office 2010, and is very helpful.

What happens if I delete these temp files? I am enclosing a copy of the temp files on my "e" drive so you can see.

Multiple Drives - No OS Installed

Sep 15, 2009

I have 3 Hdds in my PC. On 2 i have installed WinXP, and they are installed separately, so i can boot without the other drive present. My motherboard has a boot manager so i can choose the boot drive.

Now i installed Windows 7 on the third drive, when the other 2 were disconnected.

It works fine by itself, but when i connect the other 2 drives, and choose the drive to boot from, the Windows 7 one says it has no OS installed. Other XPs boot correctly.

Any idea how to fix this?

Search Drives For Multiple File Extensions

Aug 10, 2009

I've made the move (fresh install on new HDD) from XP to Win7RC x64 (I never gave Vista a look) and I want to scan my old HDD partitions for *.xls;*.doc;*.dwg;*.jpg etc to make sure I haven't missed any old files which were not saved in the right place.

The two partitions are mounted as F: and G:

In XP once you'd turned off the animated dog and chosen the advanced option, you could set "all of part of the filename" to "*.xls;*.doc;*.dwg;*.jpg" and "look in" to "f:;g:". It was a so easy

I can't seem to get Windows 7 to search for more than one file extension, let alone multiple drives as well. Is there an advanced search option which I've missed?

Save A File To Multiple Drives, Simultaneously?

I want to save a file to multiple drives, simultaneously. RAID can join multiple drives, as far as I know, you can't have a temporary RAID setup, whereas, you have an external drive that is attached temporarily, how ever long temporarily is, save the file which is saved to the RAID, when you don't want the drive to be attached to a RAID you can stop the RAID, whenever, and it acts like a regular drive.

Merging Multiple Drives Into A Single WMC Listing

Jan 17, 2012

I have a C: drive and an E: drive on a Windows 7 X64 Media Center PC. Both have a directory called "Movies" ... when I start Windows Media Center and go to "Videos" I have a C:Movies AND an E:Movies.

Is it possible to merge both these directories into a single directory in Windows Media Center?

The C drive is 95% full so I can't copy the movies from the E: drive onto C: and the E: drive is 95% empty... so over time I'll add more movies to my collection (on the E: drive) and would really like to have ALL the movies from both C:Movies and E:Movie listed in a single directory and arranged alphabetically....

Ps. I've already tried adding both directories to the windows library 'Movies' directory but you can't access the 'Movie' library from within the Media Center!

Hard-drives Apparently Corrupted After Attempted To Install A Second Hard Drive?

Oct 8, 2011

make a dualboot comp by adding windows XP to a new partition. I created the new partition with 20gb. (From the 500 of my actual harddrive)But before I actually installed on that, I got distracted with a second harddrive that my dad got(for no reason). It had a full copy of Windows XP backed up on it from another computer, so I figured I would just use that for the dualboot. I plugged it in (wired the same way as my old harddrive, but different data slot), restarted, checked the harddrive in explorer - all the data was there / reading correctly / etc, and I used 'easyBCD' to add the new harddrive to the boot list.(Which, of course, crashes if I try to start it. I just wanted to see what it would do). For a reason I can't remember, I unplugged the second harddrive for a bit, started the computer on accident (I don't know if anything loaded before I shut it off), and then when I plugged it back in.Windows 7 would not launch. It goes to a DOS-like window, except it's just a flashing _ and it never does anything even after a few minutes. XP didn't work still.. so I decided to reinstall XP (as I couldn't tell which harddrive was which on the list, I unplugged the main harddrive while installing onto the new).. and when I did this.. it formatted and installed fully... then restarted.. then restarted.. and restarted.. and just kept restarting, never showing any thing past the manufacturer logo/BIOS load-button-message-thing. So, I then try to use my 3-disk Windows7Recovery disk(burned myself with a program apparently included by the manufacturer.) It installed fully, appearing to work.. but when I launched it, it said "Invalid Partition Table" and wouldn't boot past that. When I insert my driver installer disk, it gives me a basic DOS window thing. dir A: shows the files in the disk. dir B: for some reason shows the same. C: says "Error reading from drive C: DOS area: general failure". All other letter:'s just say "invalid drive". (I'm doing this with both harddrives in.) I attempted connecting the harddrives to an old computer, but it gave an error for both. (It detected the harddrives, but said it had an error reading from it. Windows Explorer asked me to format it... {i'm willing to format one of the drives if anybody thinks it will help, but the old harddrive has data I'd prefer not to lose.} ) Looking on google, I saw several problems that all have similar problems (less overdescripptive than I am though) but none of the fixes suggested worked for me. Also - as I have two different with different errors, I only need to make one of them work.)Also - my other available computer has a CD burner / floppy drive if either are required. I also have several USB's. The computer can boot from USB's and CD's (tested), and I could easily take the floppy thingy and connect it to the computer.also - this computer is probably still under warranty unless unscrewing the hard drive voids it. .. does that count as modification of the computer?

Multiple Drives Cause 'no Active Partition Found' Error

Sep 18, 2012

I have had my system up and running with Windows 7 for at least four or five months. I have four drives in an mATX case. Which I did several times to no avail. Next, I used the install disk to try to "repair" the partition...seven or ten times, no luck. Also, no drives were listed in the window at repair prompt. So, I pulled all the cables on all the drives but the one containing the system and voilas! here I am writing to you without issue and without three of my drives. I have two other sata drives in addition to my system sata drive. one IDE drive on the system.

Clean Install On Multiple Partition/physical Drives

Oct 21, 2009

On my home computer, I have 2 physical drives. One hard drive has a single partition (D:) and the other (newer) drive has two partitions (C: and E:). Unfortunately when I first purchased this computer, the technician mistakenly installed Windows XP onto my older hard drive (D:) rather than installing the OS onto the desired C: drive.

The main problem that I am having is: Can I perform a clean install of Windows 7 onto C: drive even though my current OS (Windows XP) is installed onto D: drive? P.S. I have already backed up all files that exist in all of my partitions and would like to format all of the drives (C, D, and E)

drive spaces: C: = 40gb D: 200gb E: 200g

Today, I took out an old DVD disk that had files written on it previously by NERO in XP, and added files to it. That was OK. But then, I need to replace one of the files, so I went and delete it, but I can find anyway to delete the file, now can I add any more files to the DVD it seems.

I went back to XP and use NERO on the same disk, deleted the file, replace it with new one, and all are fine.

Cannot Start Windows 7 In AHCI Mode When Multiple Drives Are Connected

Nov 11, 2011

i'm working with a new pc build that uses a 60 gb ssd for its boot drive, and which is also reusing some "old" sata hdds for storage.

at the time i installed windows 7 ult 64, i had only a new ssd plugged in, and the bios was set to ahci mode. the installation went fine and i was able to boot into windows afterwards without issue.

then, i connected a wd caviar black sata hdd to use as storage, with the ssd being the boot drive. with both of them connected, windows will not get past the starting windows screen.

i made this video of the program before i understood that it was a drive controller issue: startup problem - Internet in it, you can see that windows boots fine in ahci mode with just the ssd plugged in, but that when the backup sata drive is also connected it doesn't get past the starting windows screen.

for the record, this caviar black hdd was my previous boot os, and it also has a windows 7 install on it (which i've renamed the base folder of), but it is not booting from that hdd. also, i have tried the same thing with other "old" sata hdds that do not have any previous windows install on them, and the result is the same thing which is shown in the video.
