Stop Windows 7 From Creating Multiple Printers?
Dec 12, 2012
Using Windows 7-Ultimate 64 on an Acer 4530 laptop. This is a personal machine and is not networked except via wifi to my router, and via BT to a single printer. I leave the printer and BT off unless I have to print something, as I don't print daily.
Problem: When I go to print a Word doc (for example) there are multiple instances of printers named like this:
Canon Printer
Canon Printer (Copy 1)
Canon Printer (Copy 2)
Many times I have gone into Printer & Devices and removed all instances of the Copies, making the "Canon Printer" entry the only one, and set as default... but the next time I go to print (which might be a week later), I have multiple instances again.
How can I stop Windows 7 from creating copies of my printer profile?

Environment: 3 identical stationary printers and 1 laptop that's will use any 1 of the 3 given printers at different times.
Goal: to allow the laptop to be switched between the 3 printers without windows creating multiple copies of the same model printer
Problem: each time the laptop is hooked up to a new printer, windows creates another copy of the same model printer in the "printers" list.
I realize there is probably a s/n burned into the firmware of the printers that causes windows to see that it is a different printer (regardless if it's the same make and model). Is there a way to make windows think that all these printers are the same exact printer?

I am trying to connect 5 Epson R2880 printers to one computer (Windows 7 pro). These are USB only - no Ethernet. My purpose to to set them all as shared, connect a wireless router and share those 5 printers with 20 other laptops in a classroom. My intention was to install all 5 - with unique names and just share them. Easy?BUT only one printer will install. When I plug in additional printers - nothing happens since the drivers were installed for the first printer. How do I get Windows 7 to "see" the others and uniquely address the USB port that it is plugged into.Worse yet, I only have 2 USB ports on the laptop, so I need to use a hub.

For more than a year, my system had just one user ie my personal user. Since the past few days, I've created an account for my dad as well and I'm facing some problems now.Since I've created an account for him, I cannot log in to my account on the first attempt. After typing in the password to log in, I just see a message saying "Welcome". I have to power off my laptop, reboot it and then log in again.

I trouble shot an issue with RDP that has me to believe the sollution lies in somthing to do with printer settings in Windows 7.Affected computer RDP's sucessfully logs into a load ballanced terminal server farm, several moments into the session being established I am getting the "Remote Desktop stopped working" dialog box. This issue is localized to this single computer and is fixed by unchecking the "pinters" option in the remote desktop settings. this computer acts as a print server to a small laserjet printer, all other computer on this small LAN can successfully print to this printer from their local desktop or while connected to RDP sessions. I have tried : Rebuilding RDP desktop icon for user. New Local machine user accounts. starting/stopping Print spool services. USB and LPT1 cables (currently on LPT1). I'm 2 inches away from backing up this users data and giving them a new computer. It doesn't make any sense

If you create 2 partitions on a hard drive and copy a LARGE file from one partition to the other the copy is very slow with lots of head movement.I wonder if there is the same overhead/concept with an SSD?Yes I do realise an SSD is memory but I want to know if you partition an SSD and copy from one partition to the other is there a corresponding degradation? Considering interface turn around etc?Or, in other words, if you copy from one partition of an SSD to another partition on the same SSD will it be as fast as copying from one SSD to another completely separate identical SSD?

When I plug in a USB flash drive, it's creating 2 files: file.db and recent.db These database files will open in notepad. File.db seems to be a list of all files on the flash drive and recent.db is a list of recently accessed files on the drive. If I delete them, it just recreates them. I don't see similar files on my C drive. Also, my work computer running Windows 7 Enterprise does not create them when I insert a USB drive. As a matter of privacy, I'd rather not have lists of my files on the drives.

I use IMAP for my mail accounts to have on all my machines the same mails. But the disturbing problem with this is that it seems that each mail client uses different folder names fo the same function ...
So I use the webmailer (to see all), MS Outlook (German), Thunderbird (English) Sent mails:sent, Gesendete Nachrichten Junk mails:Junk, Junk-E-Mails Deleted mailstrash, Gelschte Nachrichten
Is there a way to tell them to use the same folders? Also Im wondering is it not possible in IMAP to have a folder hold mails and subfolders?

I have recurring "not responding" programs in Win 7. The affected programs are MS Office, Cad programs, Photoshop, etc. I tested my ram and all is good. Processor and temps are all excellent. Hard drive has no bad sectors. All drivers have been updated. Problem usually (but not always) goes away after reboot. Velocity Micro running Win 7 64, 8 GB ram, Intel core i7 870, nvidia gx 275.

I'm about to install my new 256gb SSD. This will have 3 partitions;
100mb System reserved partition
80gb Windows OS partition
The rest will be used for VHDs
So, using disk part.. are these the correct commands in the correct sequence (Having unplugged my spinners first so diskpart only sees one drive
select disk 0
clean
create partition primary size=100 align=1024
create partition primary size=80000
select partition 1
format quick fs=ntfs
active
exit
Should I also be formatting the S/R partition? I will create the final partition via disk management when windows is installed. This will result in 3 partitions, all properly aligned etc. Yes? Or am I on some far off planet?

When I have multiple windows open [i.e. outlook is open with 4 emails open as well] and I hover over the Outlook folder in the toolbar which then shows previews of all the emails, I want the ability to close a single email and keep the others previewed. Right now, if I close one, the other open ones "auto minimize" I know this is an option as I've seen it operated the way I want it.

I have been trying to resolve some BSOD I got on my PC. To do this I also re-installed windows several times. I build and install everything by myself for years, but this is the first PC with a lot of BSODs. I used the Debugging Tool for windows to check the minidumps by myself, but as far as my knowledge goes, I didn't find anything special in there. The only thing that was obvious was that in all BSODs the ntoskrnl.exe was involved. This was something BlueScreenView revealed also. In my opinion however it seems there is more to it, since the ntoskrnl.exe could probably also crash because of another driver or hardware problem. On my previous fresh Windows 7 Install I did found out once that alot of BSOD I had at that time were caused by a bad Creative driver for my X-Fi. On the web I found a useful hint, because other X-Fi users pointed to the beta-drivers for the card. The official Creative drivers are almost two years older then these beta drivers, so obviously the beta drivers should be the first choice. These drivers are the ones I use now. I also had some problem with my OCZ Vertex 3 MI, like most owners of this hardware, and the problem was the unstable firmware. I am using the latest firmware now, which is 2.15, and that made the system alot more stable. The third problem is happening in POST: my logitech G110 keyboard features an USB hub and connection for media. These kind of USB keyboards had some problem with recognision and initialisation in the UEFI BIOS. For that I also updated to the latest BIOS for my motherboard.
All in all you can see I discovered and tried to fix a lot of different causes for BSODs. I also ran memtest once on the system for two hours, but this was in Dual Channel setup. Didn't gave any errors anyway. The latest minidump is created by the use of Verifier. I turned verifier on to test the two drivers for my AMD HD6970(crossfired). After 5 minutes in windows the BSOD appeared. I am using AMD Catalyst 12.1 drivers. I tried this, because the BSODs all are different then the ones I had on previous Windows 7 installations (on the same pc), but the only thing I changed in the current installation, was the AMD 12.1 drivers.I reinstalled windows about two weeks ago, after using Secure Erase on my SSD. I installed only the latest drivers for all the things that need drivers. The complete installation, including windows updates and drivers, was without any fault. One day later the first BSOD appeared, etc. I use the system to play Battlefield 3 only, since the fresh install. Strangely, I played more then 50 hours in the game, without any crash or BSOD! The new AMD FX-8150 processor is the first to support native 1866 MHz DDR3. The motherboard specification showed that the board supported 1866 (OC), thus it's seen as an overclock. I set all settings in bios like the ram specificiation told, which is: 9-11-9-27 2T @1.65V. Still, it could be that the 1866 MHz is too much on standard NB voltages? It's something I couldn't find an answer to on the internet, and since I never overclock I don't have that much experience with the voltages.
All BSODs happened in different situations, like just after windows log in, or when I start a program, or when idling, or when browsing the internet.Since I couldn't figure out any more usefull details out of the minidumps, I hope someone here with more experience could check the attached files.

My laptop was left on yesterday with numerous firefox tabs open (x20) for various websites, although no one was using the computer and this is a regular occurrence without fault until yesterday. I'd gone out fishing and noticed the BSOD and took this photo of the screen showing the full error as "stop 0x0000007A (0xc0487688, 0x3e5898c0, 0x96ed7e3e)"
I had altered the BSOD settings in the past to stop the laptop from restarting in order to have time to take note of the error codes in case of future failures, although I hadn't had any BSOD for over a year. The previous BSOD's were 0x000000d1 (netwLv32.sys) and 0x0000007e (Volsnap.sys), unlike those BSOD's, the one shown in the photo doesn't have a description other than the error code.
I had turned off the laptop while in BSOD, having completed dumping physical memory; subquent restarts were only reaching here followed promptly by a black screen with the flashing white underscore, which I could escape by alt+Ctrl+delete. At one point the laptop did load and somehow I was able to access System recovery options and selected startup repair, which I viewed the log prior to restarting and everything completed successfully and although I did restart the computer, I haven't been able to proceed further than the initial loading window or the defaulting black screen that follows.
I've tried running the BIOS setup utility, with the hard disk self test diagnostics, though this failed each time.
Not able to provide any debug logs until I can proceed further. Have the windows 7 back up DVD disc, but not sure if my DVD drive is playing up, as when I push ESC and enter into the boot menu selecting the Atapi cd/DVD rom drive, it only goes to the prior mentioned black screen and remains there long after 5 mins. The disc drive is heard to be working if the disc is within, though nothing results on the screen. I had recalled some difficulty prior to this BSOD with the CD/DVD rom, having decided it was either only a driver or possibly registry error or required itunes reinstall, as afterwards having successfully read a music cd with itunes.
I don't think I have the windows recovery discs or system restore discs, as I tried some I thought were these, but nothing occurred and I figure they must be from when I tested the windows 7 beta or W7RC or such. So only have the legit Windows 7 back up disc (32 & 64 bits), which I was running 32 bit. Only twice has it shown up "Press any key to boot from disc", although there was no response and it doesn't always reach this prompt.

I have installed the following printers: Epson LX-300+II, HP Laserjet 1010, HP Colour Lasterjet 1515, Canon IP5200.
The printers work and are all displayed from Word, IE, etc, but only one printer shows up in Windows 7 Devices & Printers - usually whichever is selected as default printer. If I remove the displayed printer, it shows me another one. When I first installed, it showed me all the printers, but problems started after I had to remove and reinstall my printers.

Under computer I go to my drive of folders. When I click new folder either by right clicking or by hitting new folder the system then creates 2 or 3 new folders at one time. I then have to go back and delete the extra folders. At first I did not mind because it only happened once or twice and now it is every time.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Control Panel -> Devices and Printers show some printers (PDF995 and Microsoft XPS Document Writer) but it does not show my HP OfficeJet 4500. Applications (like IE or Firebird) show it in the list of printer and can print to it.
Edit: I forgot to mention, I am running in the Administrator account and both the laptop and the printer on the same WiFi router. The printer showed up in Device Manager after I clicked Display Hidden Devices (kind of silly to hide devices from the Administrator.)

We have three medical clinics and the front desk staff float from clinic to clinic depending on their schedule. I only started here a few months ago and I am working on upgrading their Dell xp systems to Windows 7 systems. The problem begins to crop up when say a user named Sally will come in and sit down at this system for the first time.. Well, she needs to login, click on outlook icon, let it find her exchange PST and copy settings to her user profile, then she launches the application for the scanner that she uses to scan in ID's and insurance cards for every patient coming in.. The scanner is set to default settings and needs to be tweaked on color depth and double sided, etc.. Then after that, she needs to launch her Medical EMR application.. and then choose various options in the citrix client, ..TL;DR - Each user needs to spend 20 minutes resetting the defaults at this updated system.
Well this is fine except, I am planning on updating 2 front desk systems at each clinic, the user Sally will need to do all these things EACH time she finds herself sitting down at a system I just swapped out the previous evening. My thought is this, put a single system down in one clinic and let it sit a week giving most of the float users a chance to work on it for a day, setting all of their preferences etc.Once I get a bunch of them with user profiles on the local drive, grab an image of that drive and just deploy that to each system I roll out..Couple issues I am running into:First would be that I would have to register each Windows 7 copy with a new serial, which I have The next issue is, we have a mis-mash of Dell optiplex systems. 330's - 380's even a couple 320's..

I am trying to get my wife's new computer up and running without any BSOD or program failures. Note that the system was not initially set up to capture the dmp files so all the earliest ones are missing. I presented the initial problems to the original seller who recommended sticking with MSE and uninstalling Norton 360 and I did that. Another forum suggested that Virtual Memory was the problem and I disabled and restored VM. Still having multiple crashes and I am hoping that I can get real help here. I do note that all the crashes have ntoskrnl.exe in the driver stack although sometimes alone and sometimes with other drivers.[CODE]

I have attached a second monitor to my laptop which runs Windows 7, however, I need to set different resolutions for different monitors, because the display does not fit to fill the screen on both monitors.
It is also noted that the display is replicated, and I would like to have the effect of having different desktops e.g. being able to use different applications such as debugging code on one monitor on an IDE such as Visual Studio, and, viewing the browser on the other monitor.
Currently it does not seem possible since the behavior seems to be that the same resolution is replicated on both monitors.

I have a number of printers on the same port ( different versions of PCL5 , PCL6, and PS drives ). In the Windows 7 Control Panel "Devices and Printers" a whole slew of versions are missing and only the latest printer installed on that port is shown. But if I open up a Print.. dialog from any of my applications the names of all the Printers are there from which I can choose.
Why does not the Control Panel "Devices and Printers" show all my printers in Windows 7 ? Under Windows Vista I can see all of them.

Right let me start of with saying it is a zebra ups thermal lp 2844 printer which is connected to the server.it works fine with all the xp machines ( about 15 of them )we have just got in 4 new windows 7 machines, 2 running 32 bit and 2 running 64 bit.i get different error messages between the 32bit and 64bit machines.Let me walk you through, on BOTH machines i go:start > devices and printers > add printer >add network, wireless or Bluetooth device.it then searches, "connecting to ups thermal 2844 on server" windows cannot connect to the printer. cannot create a file when that file already exists. windows cant find a driver for ups thermal 2844 on th network. to locate on manually, click ok. otherwise click cancel and consult your network administrator or the printer manufactorers website. So i then click ok and point to the correct file, which results in the following message: windows cannot locate a suitable printer driver. contact your administrator for help loading and installing a suitable driver. The driver i am trying to use is a new windows 7 driver which i downloaded from zebra.com: ( Driver - Search Results)i have also tried all the drivers we have on our server for these machines and also tried the disk that it comes with.

how network printers work in Windows? Is there only one way of setting these up, or several ways? Do I have to have a driver for the specific printer on the client? Why can't the material be sent to the server in some device independent format (Postscript??), and converted to printer commands on the server? Do I have to have a driver for the specific printer on the server? If the driver is on the client, presumably it's talking directly to the printer (using the server only as a means of communication) using the printer's own command codes, so I don't see why the server needs a driver... Under what circumstances can or can't the client download the driver from the server? What happens if the client and server are running different versions of Windows, either an older version on the client, or an older version on the server? What happens if the client is running 64-bit and the server 32-bit, or vice versa? What happens if there is no driver available for the newer version of Windows (which might be the client, or the server), because the printer is quite old?
