Is there a way to setup your computer to connect only to a specific wireless router in your area? I live in a college dorm and there are a lot of wireless connects available so I'm thinking that there might be complications with my computer with all the information in the air.

I have a D-Link DIR615 router which I've been using for the past 5 months (no problems whatsoever). After i've got my laptop from the support service I can't seem to successfully connect to my home network.
My phone can connect with no problem to my router. My laptop sees other wireless networks. This is how it goes: when I try to connect it immediately says "unable to connect" when I run the diagnostics I get the "windows did not receive any response from the wireless router" message. I can only connect after like 30 mins of changing the wireless settings (usually SSID and security) from my router + rebooting it countless times. Even then, I usually check "automatically connect" and the next day after I arrive from work, it doesn't really connect automatically and can't even connect to it (unable to connect message). Even typing a wrong passphrase when it's secured it doesn't say "wrong passphrase" but "unable to connect".
Another very wierd thing is that my wireless network disappears from the network list after a few minutes, I still see other secured wireless networks.
I can connect to a wireless network made by phone (wifi hotspot) with no problems.
I live in the UK and use Sky as my ISP.The wireless router they supply is OK as far as the internet side of things is concerned, but for a good wireless connection to my wife's laptop in the next room, it sucks.I have a spare Netgear DG834N Wireless ADSL2 modem router and was going to use this instead of my Sky router in an effort to improve the wireless range. Unfortunately, Sky's T's & C's insist that using a different router to the one they supplied could result in my internet service being withdrawn.In an effort to prevent people using a third-party router, Sky have encrypted theirs with a username and password (not the username and password used to logon for e-mail etc) that can be retrieved with a hack, but I prefer not to go down that route.What I would like to do is use the Sky router to handle the internet side of things, and then use my Netgear router as a wireless access point to give us better wireless coverage around the house.Is this possible and if so, how do I go about it?

I saw that my speed is kind of good (about 14 Mb/s), I tried to get this speed higher.I went into the router setup from my browser, and changed some settings from thereOnce changed, I reboot the router to see if it changed my speed.The one setting that blocked my access to internet is MCS. I don't remember if that was off/disabled, but i changed it to MCS7, the last option available for MCS... thing.

BT are providing me with their newest wireless router free of charge as part of the deal and I'll be using that to set up my wireless network, which will consist of an HP Pavilion desktop, a Toshiba laptop, a Sony Vaio laptop, an HP wireless printer and a Samsung HDTV.
This means my Sky wireless router is surplus to requirements, so I was wondering if I could convert it to a wireless access point to improve the range of my BT wireless network.
I've read a couple of supposedly easy-to-understand articles on Google and have to say they left me more confused than ever.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 Home Premuim x64 Bit Service Pack 1. I just bought the Xbox 360 wireless controller for windows which comes with a receiver to play on the pc. When I got it I just plugged in the receiver and connected the controller it came with and it worked fine just after using for a while, did it stop connecting to the controller and after that i wouldn't connect anymore so I installed the software that it came with update the driver but still it won't connect then I unistalled the driver and software restarted the computer installed everything again and still I can't get the controller to sync with the receiver. Even tried This but I cant install the different driver because it says driver has already been installed and is up to date:

View 2 Replies View Relatedi just built a new Windows 7 Machine and i installed x64 bit for the first time and this is my main computer with a WRT54GL Router hooked up and i moved my old machine out to my living room, but when i try to connect to it wirelessley the x86 wont even see my network at all, i have SSID broadcast on, the only way it will see it is if i disable security and WPA2 then it shows up but as soon as i put the security back on it wont connect/see it at all. Can anyone help me i have no idea whats going on, my previous machine i had out in my living room was windows xp and it could connect to my x86 win 7 fine, but now i cannot get it to work, i even bought a new wireless usb adapter to try and it still wont see it unless i unencrypt it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a new HP PC w/ Windows 7 Home Premium [64-bit] OS.When I ordered this computer from HP, it was supposed to come with a wireless internet card. However, the manufacturer made a mistake and did not install any card. I called and complained, now HP has sent me the following product:Linksys WMP600N Dual-Band Wireless-N PCI Adapter now onto setting up the connection....I did install a NETGEAR wireless card on the back of my old PC, about 6 years ago, so I think I should be able to install this card, however I did read some people have problems with the drivers on this card. Also, at my old apartment where I had wireless internet the first time, the landlord and maintenance people managed everything for providing the signal, so I don't really know anything about setting up router, signal, connection, etc.
Right now the primary internet connection in this house comes through the cable+phone company. There is an RCA Thompson Digital/Broadband modem or router or something, model #DHG535-2, and from there the connection plugs through ethernet cable into the Apple Mac that I'm using to type this right now.My new PC is in another room, and I will install that Linksys wireless card and use that PC most of the time. What I would like help with is:
1. What steps must I take to install the new PC
2. Do I need to get a wireless router, and if so, which ones will work best with the wireless card I received

I have installed Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit with no real problems. Except the internet connection! I have Sky Broadband which has a Sky router. I can connect my laptop wirelessly so i know it works ok. The only way my 'new' desktop will connect to the Sky router is by using an Ethernet cable. It simply cannot connect to it wirelessly.
My Comcast router is wireless and I would like to use my old Netgear router to receiver the signal so that I can use two computers in my basement that do not have wireless cards. Can the router be setup to receive the signal and distribute it even though it was designed to do the opposite?
