I will be starting a job soon that requires my being on the road 5 days a week and I want to know if there is a way that I can watch my programming from the road from my laptop. I've not used Media Center before...does my PC have to be on for recording and playback as described above or does it "awaken" by itself?

Nov 8, 2011I know there have been a number of posts on this subject but I have been unable to find a solution. I have 2 Windows 7 machines, both running SP1.
My HP Pavilion is running 64-bit and my Dell Latiude E6400 is running 32-bit. I can successfully RDP from my Dell and even my Apple iPad (via an RDP client) into my HP Pavilion. However, the problem is that when I try to RDP from my Pavilion into my Dell I get connected but all I see is a BLACK from the Dell machine. The only thing i can see is the Status bar at teh top telling me that i am connected. A few moments later I get a popup message telling me that the machines have failed to communicate.
I have confirmed that RDP settings are identical on the Pavilion and Dell. I have even downgraded the Dell NVIDIA graphics driver to an older version based on the recommended version on the Dell support web site.
Windows 7 Remote Desktop, Remote Pc Screen Locks When Trying To Install Software
Nov 7, 2012I am using Windows 7 Pro 64bit, trying to use Windows remote desktop to connect to another PC in the LAN and install software. Right click on the .exe and choose run as admin. As soon as I do that I get a black screen with 2 white bars in the upper left hand corner(looks like a pause button). The user who's pc I am connected to sees the log inbox for the admin creds, how ever I can not get to it. How can I make that screen stop popping up?

Sep 2, 2012no matter what i'm viewing, be it a video on Internet/dailymotion/vimeo/wherever or anything on vlc, the second i go full screen i notice horizontal screen tearing across the entire screen. i managed to lessen it to an extent on vlc by switching to directx output, but it still pops up on Internet videos etc.have also just started to notice it on non full screen videos.if it makes a difference it's around 2/3 of the way up the screen on online vids and 90% of the way up on vlc.i know this problem is going to be hard to pinpoint since it could be any number of things, but i have the feeling this is all because i have a setting too high/low somewhere.

Feb 18, 2011i have is that my win7 machine is hooked up to my TV and i want to remote control it with my laptop while still viewing it on my tv. I can remote control it with my laptop but all i see is is the login screen on my tv. I'm just wondering if its possible to view the screen on the client machine while its being controlled via Windows Remote Desktop or do i have to use third party software to accomplish this?

Aug 3, 2011ok basically lately my remote desktop is flaky.
Scenario is. Activated Windows 7 N Ultimate as host machine (in other room) Activated Windows 7 Ultimate as client machine, am using it now.
If I remote desktop in after logging in locally on the host, I get the black screen for approx 2 minutes at which point it closes with an error.
If I remote desktop in whilst the host is logged out I can connect and log in fine. If I detach from a running remote desktop session and try to relogin again, I get the black screen sympton again and have to logout locally on the host to be able to login again on remote desktop. If I try to login locally on the host whilst the black screen is up here I get rejected due to remote desktop service been busy. I have to wait for the window to close.
Driver For Remote With HP Pavillion Laptop
Apr 1, 2009i have an HP Pavillion dv9000 series laptop that came with a media center remote.
right now im using MediaMonkey for my music instead of WMP. i had the remote working in vista (original OS) but it wont recognize my remote and crashes MM when i just recently tried using it.
would installing the vista driver work or do i need something else?

Jun 28, 2011I'm a visual artist and I use a program called ArKaos for AV installations and nightclub visuals. I'm thinking of building a HTPC to take around with me as my laptop is not quite powerful enough for the work I do. I was thinking of using the laptop as a reference monitor for the HTPC using Remote desktop over LAN but I've run into some issues trying to set it up at home on my main PC. When I run Remote desktop I loose the ability to select which display is being used for full screen in ArKaos.

I have extremely little knowledge of Remote Desktop so I don't know how it handles display drivers but it would seem it uses it's own driver (RDPDD) when it's active. Is there anyway around this, all I want to do is have my laptop displaying ArKaos' clip view and have my second GPU output running to a projector.

Feb 19, 2010I connect to my work computer through a VPN and remote desktop, and often times remote desktop (I use NLA) works once, but after the first disconnect I can't login remotely. Power settings on the computer are set so it never goes asleep and never turns off the display.
In addition, when this happens, I find the computer has a black screen either before or after login when I go into my office to login directly to the computer.
This problem seems to occur on several computers, including on Win 7 Pro x32 and x64.

Aug 30, 2011We have several remote systems that can all connect fine. I am having an issue with one box. It is a windows 7 home premium machine with netgear wireless nic. When I open mstsc to connect to a remote machine I put in the ip address and click on connect.I receive an immediate failure with the text "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again...blah blah"I have a server 2008 r2 with Network level authentication enabled. I have 8 other systems that are hardwired, at different geographic locations and all connect fine. I have not made any changes on the server side since this problem seems to be local to this client only. On the client I have made the following changes/observations. I have disabled the firewall, cleared the remote desktop cache, remove the MRU entries from the registry, verified that port 3389 is open via telnet. I have been bashing my head for days trying to figure out why this one box is not working. The problem occurs for every user on the box including the admin.I don't receive the box that prompts for warning if there is a server authentication issue but I think that is because I selected ignore at some point and said yes to continue. I'm not sure where that cache resides to delete that selection.

I have made sure via Folder Options that I can see all files, I have searched high and low on the net, and found one that was the same problem but no one had answered it. I am using a computer that has 64 bit home premium Windows 7, would it have anything to do with a 64 bit system? Jan 16, 2011Okay, I am trying to keep an open mind to the point that I invested my money into Win 7 Ult. 64 bit. While I find that it has some interesting addons, like Vista I find that is appears to be warmed over XP with the same features, just renamed and in different places so as to seem new. Now, that being said the deal breakers is really whether or not I can access and view files that I wish to. It seems no matter how I set up my admin access I can not view files such as, Temporary Internet files, cookies and many others unless I go through a 3rd party program such as Norton Utilities 10.5. In XP I could find and view them without problems. In Win 7, not only can I not view them but the difficulty in even finding that they exist makes me wonder what other files hold information that I wish to know about but windows is hiding from me.So, 2 questions. Can anyone give me an easy fix that will allow all files to be exposed to me AND viewable to me via Windows Explorer and 2, While Win 7 some nice little add ons can anyone explain what makes it fundamentally better than XP so that I would want to stay with it rather than going back to XP?

Dec 19, 2011one day it suddenly crashed while i was watching a movie. it displayed random patterns on screen. kinda like part of the image from the video is on the screen then a black strip and random colors. I restarted the unit to safe mode and left it on and browsed the net and downloaded some big files for how many hours and nothing happened.. there are also times when windows is still loading with the windows logo on screen, it crashes. there are also times when the login screen is displayed and it crashes. it just crashes randomly! so i tried to reformat it. i deleted the partitions and created a new one, formatted it then fresh installed windows 7 ( my previous OS is windows 7 by the way) and started installing the basic drivers and after a few hours, it crashed again...thinking that the driver installed might not be compatible, i tried another fresh install of windows (same execution, delete partition, create, install OS) and this time, without installing the drivers, it crashed again after a few hours... sometimes it crashes immediately after turning it on from cold start!

Jul 2, 2012My XP machine HD started to fail and after numerous tries to fix it, I purchased a new Windows 7 machine. I took the internal HD out of the Xp machine and put it in a docking station to USB and it shows up as Drive K on the windows 7 machine. I wanted to drag and drop some files from it, but can't find most of them! What is odd, is most files aren't showing - no music files, no doc files - the drive seems to be working/reading ok. I also noticed there are no individual user accounts. I've turned on "show all hidden files" and I"ve given ownership of the whole K drive and folders to everyone and my username, but no files show. The drive shows it is almost full, so SOMETHING is on there.

Viewing Recent Files In Explorer
Feb 7, 2011I work on a file in Word, I saved it. Then I want to email it to someone or upload to a website. When I open Explorer it just gives me an option called Recent Places which is a list of folders I have recently accessed. Then I have to remember (Word doesn't make that easy as it doesnt say at the top of every file the folder it is in like Word perfect wonderfully does) which folder I saved the file in. Is there anyway that I can set up Explorer so that a list of recently saved files, not just folders they are in? That would make things wonderfully easier and I wont have to go back and forth through a bunch of folders to find my file to email or upload.

Other files such as .avi show fine.I don't know if it's related but I am also not able to view the file extensions on these same files though I can see the extensions on most others. Folder options show I am set to view hidden folders and to show file extensions. It doesn't appear to be a virus problem as I have checked with a number of virus programs and verified they found none.
