I want to look through files for a document but when I open one up, only to find that it wasn't the doc I was looking for, I have to start all over again from the point of A to Z to get to where I left off. Can't I just look at a document without opening it so I don't have to start over?
I have a SSD for my OS and Programs. The HDD I have for my Docs is four years old and I need to replace it before it dies on me. Is their a noticeable time difference in your Docs being accessed?
I've been taking images for years now, yet the other day my brain again failed to boot. My nightmare is when I reach for an image to restore I fail to save my bookmarks & My Docs before I revert. So the recent stuff is gone. Can I idiot-proof my Windows 7 by permanently basing My Documents, My Pics, My Bookmarks in another partition so only the CDrive op. system gets zapped & needs to be restored on demand.
Found these instructions on net but I got lost at #7: Quote: The My Documents folder is part of Windows 7's new Documents Library. A library combines multiple folders that contain similar types of files.
To move your documents to the D drive:
1. Create a new documents folder on the D drive.
2. Right-click the new folder and click Include in Library > Documents .
3. Click Start > Documents .
4. Double-click My Documents to show its contents.
5. Drag and drop the files to the new folder.
6. Press F5 to refresh the view.
7. Under Documents Library , click locations .
8. Right-click the new folder and click Set as default save location .
9. [Optional] Click My Documents and click Remove . move the My Documents folder to another drive - Microsoft Community Where is Documents Library > locations?
I've done all I can so to set WM as my default, it says it's default, but when I try to open an email filed in docs, and I have WM set to be the default, the only thing that happens is WM which is already open pops up, but not the file I clicked on. I had to set WM back up after SP1 and I've done everything I could find on this board, but I'm totally stumped now. I've installed SetWinMailDefault, don't know for sure it went in, but I thank it did. What would happen if I used that again, or manually put it in the registry?
I have lost all my personal documents from my desktop, if i search for folders or documents that i remember were there i can get to some of them, how can i restore these
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader using Revo uninstaller and I still can't preview PDF's in Windows Explorer.
Update: Solved
I had previously had Foxit installed. I had to run a repair install of Adobe Reader (Control Panel>Programs and Features>Adobe Reader 9.2>Change>Repair
Then apply this registry fix and voila!
I would like to have Foxit and Adobe Reader installed, so not sure how to make Foxit the default reader but still maintain preview in Windows Explorer.
Assume I have 2 docs and I want to find out the changes between them. The feature "Track changes" is not enabled and I don't want to enable it.I just want a one-shot comparison. In old Word 2003 there was a menu Tools->Compare and Merge Documents....Where EXACTLY is the corresponding menu in Word 2007?
my aunt has new toshiba laptop win7 ran fine 2months then one day no folders in libraries - i don't know what she did, but i can't find and when i try right click default folders nothing happens - i have used search, etc cant find any of the four usually lib folders
He has a toshiba satellite, i5 with a GT 330M (geforce) and 4GB RAM (specifics i can find if needed)His issue is that over the last 5 days the laptop turns on slowish (not the end of the world) but the main issue is constant freezing (generally involving the little spinning blue circle cursor)If left for about 8 seconds it un freezes and get working agian then starts as soon as you open a document/folder/start menu anything! It has not had ONE BSOD the event viewer shows warnings for slow boot/slow after standby but no major criticals recently. There was one past critical for ACPI driver for NT but that was a while ago. There was also a shutdown error on8/7/11 from unkown file name, driver _iu14D2N.tmp He runs trend antivirus (real paid version)Also runs registry blue (i think thats the name) real version, but only recently to try and fix issues. If you look in task maanger, during the freezes, whichever folder is currently selected goes from running to not responding for the freeze.Even whilst shutting down the device, the "logging off" screen does the freeze for a few seconds and the circle doesnt spin.Perfom / check analysis showed no errors Attached is a Drriver view txt doc. Finally, he has mentioned his "hdd light" at the base of the lappy is permanently on, whereas it used to just blink a bit when you started doing tasks. He ran a chckdsk /f a few weeks ago and said it had been playing up but that seemed to get it running better, but running chckdsk now is saying its got about 4 bad blocks and /f wont run.
Up down arrows wil only scrol one line at a time. Furthure more Page up Page down wil only scrol one page at a time.I have to press arrow or Page key and wait 3 seconds before I pres again to continue.
I have had to do a fresh installation due to the hd failing. I now have a larger hd partitioned into 2, one (C for the OS and programs and the other (D for the data). Is is possible and advisable to transfer all the directories such as "My Docs" and "My Music" from drive C; to drive D:? If it is OK then how can I do it.
I had this nightmare with Vista, but it was easy to fix. Just take ownership. But a scan shows I have many tracking cookies, but Win 7 won't let me access it. Denied. I clicked the 'turn off password' thing, but still cannot access docs and settings, cookies, and many other useful folders.
Very annoying, since I am the only user and logged on.
I installed the Office 2010 software on my windows 7 64-bit laptop however now it doesn't open any of my Office files that are from 97-2003? It opens 2007, but nothing before do you know why?
When I File -> Save As, I get a message "WORD has stopped working" Same results with all OFFICE applications. And with a separately installed copy of VISIO.
This may be a result of a hang in Easy Transfer. Easy Transfer was sitting for hours saying "1 minute" remaining. I terminated the program. The hang was in the administration section.
My company recently installed Windows 7 and Office 2010. Every time I try to open a excel file, via a link on our Intranet it asks for credentials.I ruled out IE, firewall, and the document. I narrowed it down to something in Excel except i can't find it. Its like a security setting.I was able to open the file when I had Office XP installed but as soon as i installed Office 2010 it won't work.
I just installed Windows 7 and have been unable to preview any Office 2003 documents in the Explorer preview pane. This includes doc and excel files. The preview pane just says "No preview available."
I can view gif, txt, xml, pdf, html, etc. In general, Office is working, i.e. I can create and edit Office documents.
On a related note, I would also like to be able to javascript files which are just plain text, but I'm not sure how to do that.
had very recent blue screen event using XP. Local guy 'fixed' it and put Windows 7 on my PC. Now I can't print anything at all, despite re-installing printer and Office software. System demands that I save any doc first (as tif file only, no alternative format allowed) then won't print it anyway?
New win 7 pc, had old HD fitted as slave drive, can see & move photos across but wife christmas card mail list (all I really need from old docs) will not view/move/print. If they can be moved there does not seem to be a labels template in win 7 word pad. surely the designers should have expected home premium user to want to write a few labels once a year!
I've just downloaded Student and Home Office 2010, and for some reason I now cannot open documnents that are Word 2007. I also cannot save work onto my memory stick, as for some reason, it saves the document as Word 2007, even though I am doing the work on Word 2010! (I only ever had a trial version of 2007, never the whole thing and it is no longer on my comp) I am starting a history course soon, and their online docs are 2007, and again, I can't open them. A message pops up saying that 'the file does not have a programme associated with it for perfoming this action' thats what pops up every time.
I just built a new desktop, got a 60GB SSD to boot Windows7 (and maybe a couple applications) from, and a 1.5TB HDD for storage. I'm trying to change the default location of My Docs, Downloads, etc from the SSD to the HDD (maybe change the location of the whole User folder?) so that my SSD stays clean with just the necessities. My problem is that I can't access the right-click menu that allows you to change the default location.Note: When I first installed Windows 7, all of my SATA ports were in IDE mode. I was able to access the "change folder location" menu for My Docs, etc, at this time. I changed the SATA port with my SSD to AHCI mode, which really boosted the boot speed, but I couldn't access the menu anymore after that.
after creating an iso file, when I go to where its located via Windows Explorer (sitting on C drive) its not located there but when I go to burn the image, I can select it from the location via the program I use to burn it. I have made sure via Folder Options that I can see all files, I have searched high and low on the net, and found one that was the same problem but no one had answered it. I am using a computer that has 64 bit home premium Windows 7, would it have anything to do with a 64 bit system? I am looking at loading Windows 7 Pro either 32 or 64 bit on here but want to give the home premium that came with the computer a chance, this is my first computer I have not built?
Okay, I am trying to keep an open mind to the point that I invested my money into Win 7 Ult. 64 bit. While I find that it has some interesting addons, like Vista I find that is appears to be warmed over XP with the same features, just renamed and in different places so as to seem new. Now, that being said the deal breakers is really whether or not I can access and view files that I wish to. It seems no matter how I set up my admin access I can not view files such as, Temporary Internet files, cookies and many others unless I go through a 3rd party program such as Norton Utilities 10.5. In XP I could find and view them without problems. In Win 7, not only can I not view them but the difficulty in even finding that they exist makes me wonder what other files hold information that I wish to know about but windows is hiding from me.So, 2 questions. Can anyone give me an easy fix that will allow all files to be exposed to me AND viewable to me via Windows Explorer and 2, While Win 7 some nice little add ons can anyone explain what makes it fundamentally better than XP so that I would want to stay with it rather than going back to XP?
When I used to click on a PDF file, it used to automatically open Adobe Reader and then I could print it, make it larger, smaller etc. But every link I click now opens inside the browser, happens with both FF and IE. This means I can only view it online and not save it. how I change this so it opens Abobe Reader? I have Abobe 10 by the way
How can I get Windows 7 to default view to list? I also asked on another thread, but will ask here too, is the 'Thumbnail' view gone??? Can I do anything to get a 'thumbnail view?'
My XP machine HD started to fail and after numerous tries to fix it, I purchased a new Windows 7 machine. I took the internal HD out of the Xp machine and put it in a docking station to USB and it shows up as Drive K on the windows 7 machine. I wanted to drag and drop some files from it, but can't find most of them! What is odd, is most files aren't showing - no music files, no doc files - the drive seems to be working/reading ok. I also noticed there are no individual user accounts. I've turned on "show all hidden files" and I"ve given ownership of the whole K drive and folders to everyone and my username, but no files show. The drive shows it is almost full, so SOMETHING is on there.
I've had IE shortcuts on my desktop that I've used without problem for years. Since about 3 days ago whenever I double click one of these links the page opens in InPrivate viewing. If I close the page and retry, the page opens normally without InPrivate.I get the same problem when opening links from emails but closing the webpage and retrying results in me still getting InPrivate viewing. The only option with links in emails is to copy & paste the link
My problem is whenever I want to view mp4 files in WMP, it freezes for a while then blue screen. I reinstalled Windows just now but the problem seems to occur again.
I don't know what caused this, I have attached my dump files as suggested in the sticky thread.
