Is it possible to transfer programs from my old windows.old file after a reinstall of the Windows 7 OS?
After the first installation of Windows 7 I was having weird performance issues which is why I'm doing the reinstall, but if there's a faster way of accessing my old programs without having to install all of them it would be a big help.
had to re-install windows 7 because of some problems. I have a backup HDD that has what I want. When I transfer the files to my new C drive from the back up everything is there but not active. How can I activate the transferred programs?

I wanted to mirror the drives and files under windows, however the shop set up the drives in Raid1.(shop doesnt know what customer service is) I transferred all my files onto the drive with window home premium etc before realizing it had been instlled with Raid bios setup. I want to remove the raid format (bios) and clear the drives and reinstall the drives under windows to use one a a backup drive. I have a external drive I can use to assist and later use a a second backup drive.I understand once I clear the Raid formatting I will wipe all the info from the installed drives?Can I make a backup on my external drive and reinstall all my prgrams and files from my external drive once I do this. Also If I mirror windows 7 to my external drive can I reinstall this from my external drive to the internal drive or will it be set up as a raid format and not be of use?

But I am noticing that many of these programs, like Skype, Winamp, Teracopy etc. crash either at start or during the process. All these programs worked flawlessly before restoration.

When I double-click on the icon, I get the usual spinning "loading" circle and then nothing happens.When I try to open straight from a saved file, I get an error message. For example, whenever I try to open a word doc, I get this error message: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."Symantec Endpoint Protection has been turned off and every time I go to the Action Center to turn it back on, nothing happens. I get the usual message that asks if I want to allow the change and when I click "allow," nothing changes.I've done several system restores, even in Safe Mode, and they have all failed. System repairs have all failed too. Obviously, virus scans are out of the question and Windows Defender (one of the programs that actually will run) keeps telling me that there is no malicious software to be found on my system.
This all started yesterday afternoon. I was running Firefox as usual and had a word document open that I was typing in. I walked away from my laptop and when I came back, there were three pop-ups on the screen from a virus that I had just managed to get rid of several days before. I closed them out and was preparing to run Malwarebytes when my computer shut itself down suddenly. There haven't been any pop-ups or anything that would indicate that this is a virus. However, I tried the same fix that I used to remove the virus the first time (copying the Malwarebyes file 'mbam.exe' to the desktop and naming it as 'mbam.COM' so that it will open) but even that does not work. I've tried the regedit fix that I've found in forums here but that didn't work either.
i accidentally switched my default setting for opening all programs to 'windows photo viewer', but the programs are not opening now because of this. what is the default setting of windows for opening all the programs, and how do i restore it to the original settings.?

From what I've been reading on the internet, the disappearance of restore points with Windows 7 is a relatively common occurrence, and some forum members have suggested that disc cleaning software like CCleaner and Advanced SystemCare 4 could be responsible.

This is my first time doing this and everthing I read, prior to, lead me to believe the programs would be included in the system image.

When I download a program and try to install it, it says creating a Restore Point and sits there for a while. A long while. I have found that I can go into Safe Mode and install things with no problem, fast. Even after it is satisfied with the restore point and says it is installing, it will just sit there and drag on. What can I do to get things to install without Safe Mode?

Having encountered the XP version recently and resolved the issue, I was able to easily remove the virus and associated rootkit. The difference this time was that unhide.exe failed to restore the start>all programs menu shortcuts, although it did manage to restore the folder structure. I am the administrator. Someone I don't trust at all, used my PC a while back. After he (did whatever he did) I noticed I couldn't access several files. I get a "access denied" or you don't have permission to view this file, owner info etc.. I can see a lot of the files, but their either empty now or I can't view them. I have used restore many times in the past, but now I get a message " no restore points".. I don't know what he did, or if he did anything.. It could be one of my kids changed properties by mistake, before I wised up and created a basic user acct w/ limited access for them.. I almost forgot. When I go into file properties there is a red x by my user name (administrator) Not in every property, but several.. Sometimes there is a red x by other user names, as well, but mostly mine.

I then tried to restore it to an earlier time via safe mode but the restore point available is only the one as at the time of the update. I created a backup of my old registry before cleaning and I can access it using the command prompt that you can access in the system restore options. View 7 Replies View RelatedOK, so a couple of days ago, my HP desktop crashed and then went through the whole System Recovery loop(I couldn't login to Safe mode, wouldn't let me past the System Recovery Screen). Well I backed up the entire C drive using Backup your files in the menu. Then it shows you all the file types it will back up; i.e photos, videos, e-mails and bookmarks. So I did that to an external hard drive and it comes out to 143GB.Now comes my problem. I've been able to copy everything from the external hard drive using RecoveryMgr.exe which opens the WIM files and saves them to my C: hard drive under System Recovery Files. However it does not seem to work when it comes to putting in my old Thunderbird e-mails, contacts and such or in Firefox to restore my bookmarks, saved passwords.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSystem restore failed to extract the file. from the restore point. There was a disk failure during the restore. This might be caused by bad sectors on the disk. I get the same message, but with a different file name, with every restore point I try, and I have now tried all seven available restore points, going back to 30 Dec 2011. The computer was working perfectly until 3 days ago when it blue screened, and has not started properly since. It is a Corei5 with 4 GB RAM and is only 12 months old. I just dont believe the drive has that many bad sectors.

I installed Ubuntu 12.04, the installation smooth as butter, but after a few days of usage, the GRUB system screwed up. After a LOT of problems I managed to restore my Laptop to its default configuration. Then, I tried to restore my personal files with the DVDs I made, but when the manager finished, it only showed a folder with all my files in it! And it didn't give me any option to restore these files or something!

Obviously two of them are worthless. I understood that a new restore point should be added each week, or at a major change of some sort. How do I change this so that more points are added as time goes by? One each week would be just fine. I can't find this option in Win 7 as I recall was available in XP.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an old HD that I used to use for backups in a different PC setup, and though I deleted those backups when I moved on to a different HD, the backups were recoverable using Pandora and I believe intact since I never used the drive in question after that time. So specifically, I now have a folder called "Backup Set 2011-02-13 190024" that contains a 84 zipped folders worth 13.1GB that comprise that backup, and I want to restore them in some automatic fashion to see what's actually worth salvaging. (I assume this doesn't have to be done one-folder-at-a-time, drilling down through five layers of branches in the folder-tree, and almost immediately forgetting where I am...) But when I look at "Backup and Restore," I can't bring up this or any target folders - the link "Select another backup to restore files from" produces a blank set of choices, and there doesn't appear to be any way to 'load' a particular folder to restore, as I would have expected.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently built a new computer system that contains my old HDD, which I transferred from my previous PC. The old copy of Windows 7 that was already installed didn't work in the new PC, as expected. Instead, I have a new copy of Windows 7 available that I need to get on the HDD. But I also need to deal with the old Windows copy. I've already transferred all of my personal files from the old copy onto a portable HDD for safe keeping. What I plan on doing is reinstalling the new copy of Windows 7 onto the PC's HDD to be used in the new computer. I was able to acquire the new Windows 7 version for a really cheap price from my college.
So now I either have to format my HDD so that the new Windows 7 can work properly while keeping the old/useless version out of the way, or wipe the old Windows 7 from the HDD completely. Should I keep the old Windows 7 on the HDD and just never use it, or would that conflict too much with the partition used by the new version? If they do conflict, how should I go about removing the old Windows 7 partition? dealing with the HDD and OS seems to be one of the most annoying parts of a PC.
