i have an Alienware M17X R3 with an HDMI INPUT which i can plug my xbox 360 into and play it through my laptop monitor. Is there any software that will allow me to use the HDMI IN as the primary video input, in oppose to the actual desktop screen? i tried using a few free softwares in which it records the "HDMI IN ON" message that shows up, but when it goes away and when I see my dashboard, the recording software sees my desktop image. i do not have a capture card, nor do i want to use one. i simply want to use a software (if there is one) to capture the HDMI IN on my laptop.

Have a new camcorder, the videos from which I wish to record on a DVD for posterity and sharing.Apparently there are several modes that my PC asks about before making the DVD.I read, somewhere, that for the "best" pix quality, you should tell it to make a "Data Disk," and not one of the picture options.

i have an old-school Sony DCR-TRV103 camera that has digital recording on hi8 tapes. I'm trying to transfer the videos from the tapes to my laptop. One laptop is running Windows XP with a firewire port and the other is an ultrabook running Windows 7 (usb ports only).I'm looking for the most inexpensive way to be able to transfer videos to the laptop. As far as I can tell, the video camera only has a firewire out. I have tried connecting the camcorder directly to my windows XP laptop, and am able to see the camcorder, but I am unable to get the video playing. Is there someone who can tell me step by step how to transfer the video and what the best laptop to use for this?

Win 7 Enterprise, 8Gb RAM, 1Tb HDD, AM3+ processor running at 4000, 3 port firewire card, 2 monitors, the graphics system runs DX10 no problem, 8 1Tb usb HDDs running from powered hub. I have 3 camcorders all using the same video cassette type (Canon, Panasonic, Sony). I can see each on the devices and printers window and the IEEE 1394A devices are reporting no errors. Have tried each separately, all refuse to be seen by the software.Using either Adobe 2 (yes I know its old but it works) or MS Live Movieplayer each does not see any of the cameras. The cameras worked with the software on an old XP system. Where am I going wrong?

I have Windows 7 x64 Pro. Well I have been going fine with my Sony DCR -PD170 firewired to my PC. I plug it in and it pops up asking me if I want to the whole or part of the video and so on. Then I let Windows Update load the SP1 service pack and it will not load. So I go to my laptop that is Windows 7 HP x64 that also went to SP1 and it works! So I look at its drivers and they are "msdv.sys" & "ksthunk.sys". I try copying them to the same local in the desktop and no good. I try other folders like windows, Sys32/drivers/ and so on but to no avail. I even direct it to them on my desktop.

I have Windows 7 and have successfully recorded sound clips using the Accessories Sound Recorder. Next time I recorded a sound I carelessly plugged the mic into the earphone socket. Naturally I was unable to play back a previously recorded sound so I fiddled with the settings (I'm descended from a long line of idiots). Then the penny dropped and I plugged the mic into the correct socket, now because of my fiddling I can't record clips that will play back. I can play back my earlier clips.

Is there any way I can record a series, have it record the reruns, but have it not record the same rerun twice? That way I can catch up on series that I have missed and not have to delete multiple episodes.
Maybe it does this automatically as I haven't recorded much yet, but I'm just making sure.

i'm using vlc to record a part of my favorite videos so i can upload them on Internet. there's a small problem, when i try to record hd videos i get a crappy quality, however the original video has a very good quality, consider the following video:
the original video, the one that i record this part from is having a very good quality (hd 720p), it's in mkv format and i guess it's x264. why do i get this quality?
i did the same thing with a non-hd video and it worked better: how can i record with the best quality? at least a quality as same as the original one?

I've got an Acer Aspire AX3900. I've just started writing songs again and want to use my computer for recording. I have downloaded Mixcraft 5 which seems pretty good but the sound quality is pretty bad (sounds distant, like I'm in another room). Can anyone recommend an additional soundcard? Would this make a difference? My budget is not great - £20 to £40. Is it possible/worth it to upgrade to a better soundcard from the factory installed one (I guess its on board) for this price?
