few days ago i noticed four processes in my task manager that don't have a description nor a user name each one of the uses around 2.5 k of memory and i can't end them so what do you think ???

I open a text file I want to edit, then go to save my changes and I get this error:"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".I have full admin rights, running Win7 Ultimate x64 SP1. From a bit of research I have seen where many others have been experiencing this problem or something similar too. The only "fix" (that doesn't work all the time) is to close explorer.exe and then restart it to "release the handle"? Anyway, this is not acceptable for all the money and time I spent upgrading/configuring this new OS from XP -where I never had this problem- and seriously cuts down my productivity.Has Microsoft even acknowledged this as a bug yet? I can duplicate this scenario the second or third time I try to edit/save/delete a text file and I know that explorer.exe is the problem or a big part of it in any case. I don't want to go back to XP x64 but having to deal with this headache 10-20 times a day is just too much to ask.The file here is a game's map script & has to be saved to a .pk3 and then loaded into the program's root before it can run so i know othing else is running the file. No apps running in taskmngr either.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently upgraded to windows 7, and everything is running smooth and nicer than vista, but i'm been getting this notification that when windows is trying to activate, it can't. I got an activation key and everything form Microsoft for it, but i don't know what the problem is. For now its not causing any trouble, but i wonder if it will later on or not adn if i can fix it somehow?

When I go to the Network folder, all of the computer names on the network are listed.But the IP Address column is blank. How do I get it to display the IP Address for each computer listed? Also, can I get it to display the Computer Description as well?
View 6 Replies View RelatedNew dell n7110/win7sp1x64.At startup on new machine from dell, process explorer (procexp64.exe) lists 81 processes running (seems like way too many - compared to xp with maybe 25 at startup). But which processes I can turn off is a question for another day. OK, read carefully, at least 15 processes in PE show " Path: error opening process". PID, CPU, Private Bytes, and working set columns are shown for these "problem" processes, but nothing after that, ie, description, company name etc. For all other listed running processes (with known paths), all info is shown in all columns. The problem processes include some important ones, services, crss, ism, wininit, winlogon, that must to be working for the computer to work, and everything seems to be working properly, and no cpu spikes or other weird stuff is happening. Right clicking properties on these problem processes, properties window pops up as normal, but shows "version: n/a, build: n/a, path: error opening process, no command line, no current directory, autostart location: n/a, Parent: non existent process (708), user: access denied. Again, this info can not be correct since the computer is working. And then, after a few minutes, another window pops up and says PE has stopped working, and closes the program. Now, if this was the whole story, I would go to sysinternals with this, but read on... Task manager running simultaneously with PE lists 83 processes running, more processes than PE, and also ~5 different processes than PE, and PE lists some processes running that TM doesn't list. So PE and TM show different running processes at the same time. How can that be? For the processes that PE shows "error opening", e.g., crss, etc., when I click properties in TM for the same process, sometimes I get the usual/normal pop-up window listing the path, and all the other data as normal, suggesting the process is working properly. But sometimes when I click properties in TM for the processes that PE shows "error opening", I get no pop-up at all, nothing for that process. So, IMO, it's not just a PE glitch, something is actually wrong here. This is a new machine, with PE the only 3rd party installation. I have installed several dell driver updates, but this problem occurred before I installed them. Also, remember PE and TM simultaneously list some different running processes and TM also fails to show paths, etc.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter doing some Googling I discovered that it is impossible in Windows 7 to sort files by file extension -- one can only sort by file type, which depends on the file type description. This means that if I want to sort by file type, I need to rename the type descriptions of all my most commonly used files.
In addition, the only place where I can see a file's extension is in the file name itself, and not e.g. in the status bar when a file is selected. In Windows 7, the file type description (not the file extension) is also in the status bar.
In other words, in Windows 7 all files labelled e.g. "Opera Web Document" are sorted as if they have the same file type, regardless of whether they are .html, .htm, .mht, etc. And if I select a file and look at the status bar, the file's type is indicated as "Opera Web Document", without any clue as to the file extension. The only way for me to see the file extension is to increase the width of the "Name" column until the end of the file name becomes visible.
So... my question is:
Is there an easy way to simply rename the file type descriptions? I see that my JPG files are named "JPG File" and my PNG files are named "PNG" file, which is extremely useful. What I now want is to rename my HTML, HTM and MHT files' file types to "HTML File", "HTM File" and "MHT File", and the same would apply to all file types I often use (e.g. DOC, DOCX, XLS, XML, TXT, etc).
When i try to activate my copy of windows 7 ultimate i get the following error message: "Code error:0xc004E003. Description: The Software Licensing Service reported that license evaluation failed"

View 1 Replies View RelatedEarlier today I turned on my Toshiba laptop (Satellite P855-S5200) and got some sort of error screen, and then it brought me to a screen asking if I wanted to do a system repair or start windows normally. I chose system repair, but then it seemed to get stuck in that process (It was taking forever and nothing was happening), so I turned off the laptop (I know, big no no), booted in safe mode, and did a system restore to a restore point from about a week ago. The "starting Windows" screen came and went, no problem. Everything seemed fine till I got to the User Selection screen (the default blue one with the little hummingbird or whatever). Then it just sat there on that screen. I could see the hummingbird and the little squiggly lines, but there were no buttons to click my user. I just let it sit there, and after about 5 minutes, the user names popped up, and I was able to continue using the computer without any problems, no other speed issues whatsoever. It now makes me wait every time, always about 5 minutes, before the user names pop up. It does this when I restart the machine and when I try to switch users.
It is a Pentium Core i7

8 GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
I changed the values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList in order to move the default user locations to my second partition. I then created a new user profile but when I try to login I get the message 'The User Profile Service failed the login'. When I set these values back to normal, new accounts work fine but I really want my user accounts on the second partition.

When I boot into the standard user, I am prompted by UAC for the admin password for 4 programs to start. All the programs are ASUS utilities that came with mymotherboard.I have checked the permissions of the programs and the User group has full control.Also, these programs do not show up in the MSCONFIG startup tab. View 10 Replies View RelatedI am a lab technician for Microsoft classes at a community college. One of our students somehow messed up his hard drive. The computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. The system has two administrator accounts and one standard user account. I am still able to logon with those accounts and there are SID keys for each of these users in the registry.
Now when we create a new user, the account is created without any problems. The user shows up on the logon page and after running the net user command, it shows up there as well. When I try to logon with the new user, I get a message: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
None of the new user accounts show up in the registry. The other anomaly that I see is that the Default User folder is missing in each of the Users subdirectory for the three accounts where I have no problems.
I have read the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 947215 and none of the methods apply to my problem. I also checked Local Group Policies and the Do not logon users with temporary profiles setting is not configured.
How do I map existing User Folders to a newly created User Account?I had existing User Folders on drive D. I added a new drive C and installed the OS on C but changed default location of User Folders to D. Now my existing User Folders are in the Users folder on D but there is no User Account associated with them. If I create a user account with the same name will it map to the existing folder within Users?I did a test of this. I created a folder called Test within Users then created a User account called Test and logged in. It created another folder within Users called Test.Computername.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWindows XP Remote Desktop Behaviour is desireable. that is, when one account is logged in, if another account is tried to use to log in remotely from another computer, then the 2nd user cannot connect and it is indicated who is currently logged in.
Windows 7 Default behaviour is to allow the second user to try to disconnect the first user through a query message which has an idle timer.
Is there any way to change the behaviour back to windows xp, where 1) disconnection of the 1st user session is not possible, and 2) it is indicated which user is signed on?
With the power user group gone in Windows 7, has the standard User now gotten the permissions that the Power User had?

-At work, I want to IGNORE the DHCP address that the wireless network gives me, and force an IP address. Configuring the router to reserve an IP for my MAC is not an option due to a bloated corporate bureaucracy.
Right now, I have to go into control panel and manually configure the network EVERY DAY and while it's not all THAT much work, it's annoying.Is there any way to automate the process?

Since Beta, I've been getting an error message "Not enough storage is available to process this command", which is accompanied by a stop code 0xc142 when launching items like Task Manager. I've seen the first error is typically related to the Windows Desktop Heap, but I've set from the original (2GB if I'm reading it correctly), to 4GB of space. I'm running a system with 1.7TB of available drive space (20GB on the OS drive as it's a smaller SSD drive) and 6GB of RAM. I've tried varying the windows page file from 500MB to the system-controlled 6GB with the same result.
