Power Up A Laptop With The Lid Closed?
Aug 23, 2011
I have a laptop, Sony Vaio, which have the power button on the right side, not over the keyboard like some other models. So I would like to turn on the laptop by pushing the power button anytime - even when the lid is closed. But this is not the case, I can only turn on the laptop when i open the lid. I have connected my laptop to TV (as dock, via HDMI port) to look at movies. I have changed the power settings to do nothing when i closing the lid. Which works fine, but I still need to open a lid, turn on, and close the lid again! I think it should be an easy way to solve this problem. So i want to know is there any way to turn on windows when the lid is closed?

I wanted to have an external remote power button on my netbook, therefore I opened it and managed to put 2 wires from the button inside. The external button works, but one big problem remains:I cannot power UP the netbook when the lid is closed, even if I press the external remote power button?Instead, when lid is opened, the remote button works perfectly!

I've been getting the BSOD for a few days now, this happens only when the laptop lid is closed. I have set the option "choose what closing the lid does" to "do nothing". this is because i have the broadband ON and I'm usually downloading stuff. When i open the lid I see a box that says "windows has recovered from an unexpected error" and the problem event name has "blue screen"

This problem started a few days ago. Whenever I close my laptop, the computer shuts down. I've done the obvious and checked the settings for sleep, hibernate and shutdown on lid close, but those are all set to sleep, not shutdown. As you might imagine, this issue is a real hassle. I've been losing work and spending far too long on start up time with this.
The laptop itself is an hp pavilion dv4, if that might have anything to do with it.

I have the HP DV 2610US and recently upgraded to Windows 7. I have noticed that if i leave my computer with my lid closed for like 30-40 minutes it would shut down & restart and show an error message with Blue Screen as the error. It has also happened with the lid open while the computer wasn't being used.

My laptop was working fine until recently when I installed a new SSD (I used an optical bay caddy). The SSD works fine, and actually everything is fine except for the fact that after I shut down the computer it does not power off automatically (I have to hold down the power button for a few seconds). However, when I start it again,Windows does not complain about not being shut down properly, so I guess that it manages to do so, it's just that the power is not cut off. I should also say that neither restart, hibernate or sleep work. The result is the same, with the mention that for hibernate and sleep Windows does complain when rebooted (which is natural for sleep but I don't understand why it happens for hibernate).
The problem starts during the Windows installation, when it gets stuck on reboot. However, I can power it off manually and start it again and it all goeswell. should also say that:- I use Windows 7 64bit with SP1- the laptop is an ASUS K53SC- the SSD is a Corsair Force 3 60GBThe things I have tried so far are- I tried a different version of Windows 7 (on 32-bit)- I tried updating the BIOS (turns out I had the latest version)- I tried disabling the SSD or uninstalling its driver from device manager- I tried disabling all devices that could be disabled from device manager- I tried closing all services before shut down (from task manager)- I tried selective boot (from msconfig) with all services disabled

I made my Windows 7 64-bit laptop my new desktop.I put all the peripherals to the laptop; monitor, keyboard, speakers, etc, etc.Everything works fine.I am able to restart & shut down the laptop from the added monitor(start menu), however, I'm not able to power it back on from a complete shut down from the 2nd keyboard. I have read
there is a way to do this. Right now, I must go into the laptop and toggle the on/off key.My question, is there a way to add a turn-on key(power on) to the 2nd keyboard? And if so, which key would be most appropriate for this?

how to install windows hoping that it would fix a problem he has recently had, He was updating his system and a power cut happened, and his laptop turned off. When he boots up, he gets to options, Start windows Normally, Launch Startup repair, He asked me if i could fresh install windows as that may help, When I try this, the system freezes at Setup is starting, If I run startup repair, I get error 0xc00000e9 (Error communicating with device) If I start windows normally, goes to starting windows, then the same error
I am guessing the hard drive failed, but I want to make sure before telling him.

I have a MEDION MD96850 Laptop. Ever since the battery died, I have been running the laptop on AC power. This has been fine for my work. However, since yesterday, the laptop just won't turn on. The power supply is on but the laptop won't start. I have tried 3 power adapters but it's the same result.
One of my hinges is damaged and I can see a wire inside - maybe this is the cause of the problem? I read that on some laptops there's some switch underneath the touchpad that does something but I don't have a clue.
Due to my stupidity, I delayed in backing up much of my work and now find myself desperate to access it again. I really don't want to lose all the work.

Laptop will not turn off when I tell it to shut down. The operating system seems to shut down, but the computer itself stays on (case lights and fan are still active) and can only be turned off by holding the power button for 4 seconds. I have tried everything short of re-installing the OS - which I cannot do because of the non-transferable programs I have on this laptop. It is a Dell Vostro 3450 running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

So about a month and a half ago I bought myself a new MSI Laptop, and in the past 3 weeks I've had 5 Driver Power State Failure (DPSF) BSOD's. I've searched around but I'm not confident enough when it comes to BSOD's to actually do anything without first getting some advice for my particular problem. All I have really been able to tell from this is that the error always occurs at the same location, ntoskrnl.exe (+7cc40), which, being a critical part of the OS, I assume is a very bad thing. I have had this issue for a while with my Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop. It is a guess, but i'd say 5/10 times the power cord comes out of the laptop (for whatever reason - moving it etc) then the laptop will simply black screen and instantly restart and boot up again without an error message or any information as to why. This doesn't make any sense to me because every time I do have the battery pack inserted into the laptop and over 30% battery life (this is when ill plug the charger in).

As I started working on it, I seemed to experience very erratic, random issues with the network connectivity. After several reinstallations of Windows 7 and Sony drivers, however, I have identified the pattern. When the laptop is on AC power, connectivity is not a problem. When I'm on battery power, however, the network adapters cease to work and actually completely disappear from Device Manager. The is true even when the battery is fully charged and everything else works normally.I have already tried going into all the power management settings for the laptop itself and for the network adapters and made sure that they are not being shut down when the laptop is running on battery power, and yet the problem persists.

I have rebuilt my system twice now and my system is still turning off the display and powering down randomly. I have followed all the guide lines for disabling sleep mode and it still randomly stops running by turning off the display and powering down. I have to push the power button again and then Windows start up in diagnostic mode where I can select safe mode if I want.

My laptop wouldn't boot yesterday, the fan came on and the 'on' led came one, it beeped when I plugged in the charger but nothing on the screen and no post beeps etc. I let the battery drain fully, plugged it back in once it powered off and it booted fine. I shut it down last night and it did the same today on boot up, nothing. Again, discharging the battery fully brought it back.

I seem to be having crashes on my laptop as of recent, but the patterns they follow are very strange. It's almost like i'm getting a BSOD while it being used, but instead the screen just go black and all power cuts. It then reboots and starts up as usual. As far as I can tell there is no conflicting software causing this, and it happens without any pattern. Since there is no Blue Screen, I cannot give a dump file. However, on the even viewer, I see an event labeled under the critical category. Now this seems like the CPU or other internal component is overheating, But when i look at HWMonitor Pro, the CPU stays under a steady 84C under load and 60C idle. This happens in a range of occasions such as rendering videos with Handbrake to simply browsing the web. I will say this, I recently swapped out my RAM cards because the OEM one's were causing BSOD's about a month ago. If you'd like more specific information on the laptop, visit my old thread.

My laptop is 1 year old and has worked great until a month ago. I was unable to connect to the internet and thru troubleshooting got a "missing network adapter". I have since upgraded the driver. I also purchased Registry cleaner program that supposedly found over 400 registry errors.I found by accident that I was able to connect normally if I turned the PC off by holding the power button. Then restarting, I got a message to start windows normally. When I did, and then it connected to the internet normally. Now, each night if I leave the power connected to the laptop and shut down windows from the Start command it works fine. I do not want to have to leave the power connected. Toshiba tech support is unable to help other that suggesting I return the PC to the "out of the box' status which is totally unacceptable to me.
