Laptop Will Only Boot When Plugged Into Power After Battery Drained
Jul 2, 2012
My laptop wouldn't boot yesterday, the fan came on and the 'on' led came one, it beeped when I plugged in the charger but nothing on the screen and no post beeps etc. I let the battery drain fully, plugged it back in once it powered off and it booted fine. I shut it down last night and it did the same today on boot up, nothing. Again, discharging the battery fully brought it back.

I haven't verified this yet, but I wondered if it's a possible bug?
I bought a Dell XPS M1330 over a year ago and it came preloaded with Vista Home Premium. Since I want to keep the batteries in good condition I run the laptop with no battery connected and AC plugged in whenever it sits on my desk at home.
However, in Windows 7 it seems that Windows wants to put the laptop to sleep after 10-15 minutes if I do this. Since I have various USB devices plugged in, especially external storage, this is a problem. It goes away if I run with the battery plugged in but like I said, not verified yet.

Every 10 seconds or so, Windows will think my charger is unplugged. Then, it will proceed to switch back and fourth between plugged in and not, forcing my laptop to switch between power modes. (I'm guessing this is stress on the CPU and I do not want it to have to do that all the time)It's getting annoying having to deal with my laptop getting hot and such because of the switching power modes.

I've got a problem, my battery wont charge.I used to get this, but re installing ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery would normally solve this problem. Now after i remove ac, the laptop shuts down. I also got a screen once that saying my battery can now store less. When I click on the battery icon, it says plugged in and not charging.

I had a big blip that showed up on the screen telling me that to lengthen the life of the battery, I needed to change my power. It gave me 2 choices - one was Dell recommended. No explanation so I chose the "recommended" setting.I discovered that even though I was still plugged in, my taskbar showed me operating on battery. When I opened the pc today, it was still on battery even though it was plugged in.Later in the day, it automatically switched over electricity.I'm assuming this is the way it's supposed to work but I've done searches on Power Settings etc and if I wanted to revert back to the way I was using the battery I can't find it. I even did a "restore" and it didn't change.Where do I find the setting that refers to this selection?

My system randomly turns off. no blue screen. No crash dump. no windows shutdown screen. This isnt really about the shutdowns.
1 - What happens when the 4pin connector of a 20+4 pin mobo power plug is disconnected
2 - Does the 4pin connector give more stability to a pcie2.0 x16 Graphics Card?
3 - What damage could have been done?
Ive swapped the graphics card out with a Power Color HD4850. The shutoffs happened with both. I have four ram chips. i took out 2 and it still shutoff. Im now trying the other two.

how to install windows hoping that it would fix a problem he has recently had, He was updating his system and a power cut happened, and his laptop turned off. When he boots up, he gets to options, Start windows Normally, Launch Startup repair, He asked me if i could fresh install windows as that may help, When I try this, the system freezes at Setup is starting, If I run startup repair, I get error 0xc00000e9 (Error communicating with device) If I start windows normally, goes to starting windows, then the same error
I am guessing the hard drive failed, but I want to make sure before telling him.

I just completed a fresh install of Windows 7 on my Dell XPS 17. For some reason, when the computer is on battery power and is idle, the screen will flicker. Basically if I am on battery power, the moment I stop typing or using the mouse, the screen will flicker after about a second. Then as soon as I resume using the computer, it will flicker again. It will also flash at random other times... Only when on battery power (so far).As I mentioned, I just completed a fresh install of windows 7 after reformatting my drive because of virus issues. I did have some issues with getting drivers installed and still have have that are missing (see attached photo). I have not been able to get these drivers to install. One thought I had is that the screen issue may be a result of improperly installed graphics drivers? Just a thought. System Info:
[code]...

In XP, we had the option of executing a script when the computer switched from AC to battery power, and also when the battery reached a critical level. This was extremely useful because I had a special script run to send an email that the power had gone out and then hibernate the computer when it reached a critical level.
In the Windows 7 power options screens, I see no such options. Were they removed?

so i am not intirerly sure this is the correct place to post it.Secondly, i think this is a problem that i have created myself and now i am unable to correct it.The jist of it is this. Whenever i try to active the webcam (Function + F10) a pop-up shows saying that hardware connected to a USB port is not recognized. This must be cause by the cam (which us buillt-in) is connected to the USB port on the motherboard. When i go to device manager, i can see that there is a unknown device connected, whenever the webcam is powered on.Btw it worked fine when i did the initial installation of the computer. What i have tried to do to resolve this is the following:
- Remove all drivers asociated with the webcam - reboot - reinstall from provided CD
- Power down, take out batteri (even for en entire night) to let the motherboard reload the USB drivers.
- Removed all the USB drivers and have tried reinstallling
I deleted som folders from my D: drive, (which is not the partition that has my windows directory installed) and there i might have deleted som crutial files for the webcam software to work.I have no idea on how to go on from here. This is a computer i have spend quite a long time getting up-2-date with all the programs i use for school and the exams are coming up. I would really like not having to do a clean install right now.

I have just been given a Fujitsu Lifebook S6540 running windows 7 and on the whole it is fine but it is eating the battery when switched off. Research on the internet has shown that the computer, although seeming to shut down may still be running in the background. I have therefore been into the registry and changed the powerdown after shutdown code to 1 rather than 0 which should ensure a complete shut down. I duly did this and let the computer charge up before shutting down and then left it for a day.It did not make a shred of difference and found half the battery had been use

I have a laptop with Win 7 HP 32bit SP1, which doesnt boot at all, if the power cord (AC Adapter/Battery charger) is plugged in. Further if power cord is plugged in after booting, the system hangs / shuts down. It runs fine on safe mode. I believe it is a driver updation problem but not sure. I have updated all drivers given in Toshiba download site.

I re-formatted my laptop today, and now the battery icon says "Plugged in, not charging" for most of the time. If I remove the battery/powersupply/reinstall driver it works for a minute or so, then goes back to this.Pretty sure it's software related, as this happened exactly after a windows re-install.

Anyways, in laptops (gaming or not), does setting the power plan to High Performance actually improve gaming (frame rates, speed and anything else) in battery mode? I'm using a laptop (not dedicated gaming, but suffices) and my games (the recent ones) slow down whenever I'm in battery mode. A couple of friends told me I should set it High Performance, which I doubted since they don't seem to be the type to change the power plan settings and more so with the advanced plan settings.

Yesterday I wanted to use my HP laptop with my TV so I connected it using an hdmi cable. Everything connected fine and I opened up my cyberlink youcam software to adjust the camera settings. I got up for a minute to do something and when I came back the computer had gone to the blue screen of death (displayed right on the tv screen). The error was SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION. This is the first time this happened so im not sure what to think. According to the HP website all of my drivers are up to date so I don't think that would be the problem.
I attached the dmp file and screenshots of my system specifications.

Recently, I upgraded the houses' internet to fiber (or so its called in Chinese, living abroad in Shanghai BTW)and the within the first day of upgrading, I've seen a tremendous increase in internet speeds. However, within a day, a new problem also came up.Whenever I plug the ethernet cable into its port at the back of my PC, all the open programs suddenly stop responding, and then my PC freezes. I've tried booting up without the ethernet cable plugged in, and everything works perfectly. Yet the second I plug in the ethernet, everything stops working. The conditions are as follows: -I am unable to CTRL - ALT - DELETE to bring up task manager.- The mouse cursor is still moveable, but nothing can be clicked or selected-The cursor turns into the spinning loading circle, but never finishes whatever it's trying to do.I am forced to manually power down (hold the power button or unplug) the PC.However, rebooting in Safe Mode with Networking yields no problems. The internet connects just fine, and there is no freezing/lagging going on at all. I'm currently posting this from Safe mode w/ Networking. The conditions are pretty much the same when I plug in the ethernet cable to my Macbook. Chrome, or whatever I'm using simply stops responding, and I get the spinning rainbow pinwheel of doom. Forced to manually power off. This has also occurred to a friends' Macbook when he plugged in the Ethernet in an adjacent room.

Well I just had the first bsod from my laptop and after the reboot it got stuck -> reboot and select a proper boot drive.I checked the bios and my hard drive was still being recognized. After it I turned the laptop off I took the battery out and I turned on the laptop. The laptop would run normally. Then I ran safe mode and it worked fine and normal mode too. So I'm wondering if it's something wrong with my laptop battery or just really bad luck. I still need to run it again with the battery.
