Paragon Automatic SSD Partition Alignment
Nov 7, 2011
I plan to install an SSD as my system drive and use Paragon to back up and restore. If the Paragon Backup & Recovery 2011 (Advanced) Free (English) edition will automatically align SSD partition when it restores from an archive? The paid edition does this but am not sure about the Free edition.

I received a Crucial M4 128GB SSD and today have been trying to copy a Windows 7 partition across to it using the tutorial on the How To Geek website which seemed to be fairly comprehensive. However, although I managed to get to the point of creating a partition and setting the alignment I can get no further. The snag seems to arise in that the instructions tell you to create a primary partition with appropriate alignment etc. But then when it comes to copying the partition, the program (Easeus Partition Master) says it must be unallocated space.
I've also tried this with Partition Wizard but the same applies - it must be unallocated space. Although I could copy across the partition to unallocated space, goodness only knows what the alignment would be thus probably reducing SSD life and slowing the performance in the process. Any reliable way in which I can copy the Windows 7 partition whilst retaining the alignment. I should also add that I am fully aware that a fresh install would take care of the alignment for me but we want to avoid the hassle and time (probably days since this is my husband's PC) involved in a full re-installation what with the drivers and all apps and their settings etc.

One of my external HDDs has 7 partitions. I always give the partitions logical names with small letters, except for the first letter which is capitalized. This allows for easy detection in the Windows Explorer.
2 out of the 7 partitions have names with small letters. However, the names of the other 5 partitions get automatically capitalized, I just cannot get any small letters into their names. Strange thing is that this all happens on one and the same HDD; so it can't be a HDD problem (I think), it's got to be a Windows 7 issue.
So, how do I switch off the auto-capitalization for the drive/partition names? Or, how do I get small letters into the drive/partition names? Are there any utilities for doing that?

I have an Intel 520 series 120GB SSD. I ran AS SSD which told came up with '31 K - Bad'. The speeds I got were 480MBps read and 120MBps write. Very low, but I believe the motherboard is faulty (the 3rd party SATA3 and USB3 are also not working).I used an upgrade copy of Windows, so I installed Windows XP to the SSD first and then used the Windows 7 upgrade disc to do a clean install.I read Windows 7 is suppose to set the correct alignment, but I deleted the partition before install, so I'm not sure why it was set 31K.

You may not have come across this. It is very good. Small, fast - lots of great features - it will even align when creating/moving partitions, and has a migrate to ssd/hd with alignment feature.
It is excellent in pe too. Free Partition Manager Software for Windows 8/7/Vista/XP, 32/64 bit - AOMEI Partition Assistant Home Edition

I've been trying to use Paragon migrate to move Windows 7 from HDD to SSD. Apparently there is something wrong with my "boot records of partitions" according to Paragon tech support and that is why Migrate doesn't do the job. They want me to use the following on my HDD to try and fix it.
- Create Windows 7 Repair Disc (Control Panel - Backup & Restore - Create a system repair disc)
- Select Use recovery tools and then select Recovery console from recovery tools menu
- type the next commands:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootsect /nt60 all
can that mess my booting of Windows in any way, as thus far my Windows 7 work fine? Is there a way to check the health of "boot records of partitions" without these commands, as I fear it will just replace it and that might cause Windows be unstable.

i have downloaded Paragon free backup, installed and attempted to run a backup however this has failed saying error 0x11112(VSS specific error) and i dont know what to do as there is no help section for this error. As i could get this to work I then dowloaded the free version from Macrium only to find that when i ran a backup, I received a note saying error code = 1 please run chkdsk C:/f. I have run chkdsk but this has not done anything.
I read somewhere about the VSS set up which at present is set to manual - whether this is correct or not I dont know.

Quote: In case you buy a Dell PC and want to transfer the OS to an SSD, you might want to read this. i just got my second Dell desktop and discovered the same unusual partition setup as in the first Dell PC. It is.1. a 39MB Fat32 partition - which I assume is used for the BIOS2. a Recovery partition (about 14GBs) which is active - that is the unusual part3. an inactive C partition for the rest of the HDDSince I always install a small 60GB SSD for the OS (really no need to get a bigger SSD for that), I use the Paragon Migration Tool to move the OS from the HDD to the SSD - that is really easy because it is a 2 click operation and it always works flawlessly. In this particular case though, the migration tool also copies the Recovery partition to the SSD because it rightfully figures that you need your bootmgr there. That takes the 14GBs away from your C partition . Thus you lose 25% of your SSD capacity.

Is there any way to make Windows, Norton, McAfee, VAIO, or any other software actually download their updates during Hughes Nets 2-7 AM Download Zone, with out actually staying up and manually checking for updates? Maybe some way to have my net book access my wireless network at that time? Hughes Net down load manager is ok for files I find on the internet, but has no way of controlling auto updates.

I bought a 1 TB western digital external hard drive to use as a backup. I created a disc image of my computer but I am wondering if there is software that will create a daily backup by checking for any files that are different so that it does not have to make a new disc image daily. I plan on leaving my regular computer and this backup drive always on. Is this possible and what software is recommended?

Just like Vista, I cannot seem to find any way to stop the automatic driver installation. I love how when I uninstall a driver/device in XP, on reboot it pops up asking me what to do. Vista and 7 on the other hand, take it upon themselves to reinstall Microsoft drivers on reboot no matter what I do.
I've searched online and yielded no results, and searched here and didn't find anything either (Key words yield many results). Ideally I would prefer Vista/7 to just IGNORE the new device, so I can install the new one/update it myself. But if that can't be done, I'd at least like to be able to STOP the automatic driver installation.
Theres gotta be some way, even if I have to edit something or add registry keys, I just want to stop the automatic microsoft driver installation.

Few days ago my user account started to automatically logon. Before that I didn't have password, but I had to click on my username to start. I didn't change anything, or at least I didn't intentionally. When I go to netplwiz, option "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" is checked, so I don't no what else should I do to disable automatic logon.

I have RC 7100x64 connected (per cat cable) to a wireless router. Windows 7 created a home network. Router is perfectly fine and my 2 laptops automatically login into the internet. In the beginning my despktop also jsut was able to be online after booting up.
At some point (I did all updates, installed all my software) the PC does not connect to the internet anymore. Tehonly way to get online is to:
- open Network Center
- leftclick "Connections: local area connection" --> disable
- go to trouble shoot problems
- then it finds " the local area network adapter is disabled"
- I click " fix it" and it will work.
I attached the screens
How can I make it connect automatically (as it did before)? I set all services I could think of to " automatic" (IP Helper etc.). From researching I read that XP had a similar problem with SP3. not sure if it is related, but coudl an update be at fault?
Everything is up to date, Kasperksy keeps viruses away, I did not do one of the registry-cleaner tools.
Since it worked at first, one of my isntallations or updates must have done it. I also did some of the "service optimizations" from here bu tundid all of them to resolve my problem.
One could say I should isntall a newer built, but first I just want to use it before I buy the real deal in October. Second, it used to work with RC 7100 and going through all the trouble reinstalling is a hassle.
Everything else works well.

I have an Asus x83v laptop and recently upgraded from vista to 7. On vista when I plugged in the hdmi cable the audio and video would automatically go through the tv and back through the pc when unplugged (video would be displayed on both when plugged in). Now since I installed windows 7 only the video goes through automatically and the audio stays on the pc speakers unless i manually change the tv speakers to default in the control panel. How do I set it up to change automatically like it did in vista?

I am building a HTPC and using XBMC to access all my media. I am trying to set it up so that XBMC automatically starts when the PC turns on. I am using Eventghost for this. XBMC has some great wiki's on how to do this, but all of them assume you want XBMC to boot as a shell and not boot explorer. In the future I may want to do this, but right now I am still in the design/set up stage and want explorer to run so I can go back and forth between it and XBMC.My problem is arriving when Eventghost tries to launch XBMC. I need to provide permission for it to run under an admin to make changes to my pc.I want to grant this automatically.I know I can lower my security settings for all programs, but I don't want to do that. I just want to allow XBMC to launch with admin permissions.I already have the "run as administer" box checked. My security is set to high so it still asks me. How can I change this so that XBMC will launch with admin permissions without having to grant it each time yet retain the security settings I have?
