You may not have come across this. It is very good. Small, fast - lots of great features - it will even align when creating/moving partitions, and has a migrate to ssd/hd with alignment feature.

I have an Intel 520 series 120GB SSD. I ran AS SSD which told came up with '31 K - Bad'. The speeds I got were 480MBps read and 120MBps write. Very low, but I believe the motherboard is faulty (the 3rd party SATA3 and USB3 are also not working).I used an upgrade copy of Windows, so I installed Windows XP to the SSD first and then used the Windows 7 upgrade disc to do a clean install.I read Windows 7 is suppose to set the correct alignment, but I deleted the partition before install, so I'm not sure why it was set 31K.

If the Paragon Backup & Recovery 2011 (Advanced) Free (English) edition will automatically align SSD partition when it restores from an archive? The paid edition does this but am not sure about the Free edition.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI received a Crucial M4 128GB SSD and today have been trying to copy a Windows 7 partition across to it using the tutorial on the How To Geek website which seemed to be fairly comprehensive. However, although I managed to get to the point of creating a partition and setting the alignment I can get no further. The snag seems to arise in that the instructions tell you to create a primary partition with appropriate alignment etc. But then when it comes to copying the partition, the program (Easeus Partition Master) says it must be unallocated space.
I've also tried this with Partition Wizard but the same applies - it must be unallocated space. Although I could copy across the partition to unallocated space, goodness only knows what the alignment would be thus probably reducing SSD life and slowing the performance in the process. Any reliable way in which I can copy the Windows 7 partition whilst retaining the alignment. I should also add that I am fully aware that a fresh install would take care of the alignment for me but we want to avoid the hassle and time (probably days since this is my husband's PC) involved in a full re-installation what with the drivers and all apps and their settings etc.

View 1 Replies View Relatedinstalled an airport extreme router and then returned it because it would only communicate with our apple stuff and nothing else. put the netgear router back in and now neither laptop we own will print anything accept test pages. everything worked fine before. thought maybe something happened to the printer so i got a new one , installed it, same thing. have uninstalled and reinstalled and tried several other changes suggested on the internet. still ,same thing only prints test pages.

Is there any way I can migrate my Windows 7 professional to the new PC? I would like to completely format my HDD before moving it to my new machine and then reinstall my OS on it. Now it's telling me I need to reactivate, and the key is not valid.Is this repairable?It is a Lenovo X61s laptop with a Vista Business DVD License on the bottom. I have been running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit for almost a year now, but I'm about to upgrade my CPU and mobo to a new Sandy Bridge. I'm keeping the same hard-drive. Most of my programs are on a different partition than the OS, and I was planning to just wipe the OS partition and save the others. Is there a way to transfer the install data for these programs so I don't have to reinstall them?
I suppose I could theoretically go into the registry and copy all the software-related segments, but I don't think I know enough to both include and exclude everything that should be included or excluded. Also that's probably not safe or ideal.
There are a few programs on the same partition as Windows, mostly system tools or basic programs, but those will be easy to reinstall.
Replacing my hard drive with a new larger drive. Currentlly running Windows 7 Pro-64bit and the older drive has several partitions. Do I have the following steps correct?
1) Create a system repair disc
2) Create a system image of the "reserve" and "C:" partitions on an external/network drive
3) Install the new hard drive
4) Use the system repair disc to restore the image onto the new drive
5) Connect the older drive as secondary
6) Transfer other files to the new primary drive as needed/wanted
The older drive may end up in a different build for the family.
today i installed an ssd into my dell 435t.windows has installed no problem.i am keeping the old HD in the system, and currently it has all of the old information on it.is there a way to simply migrate all of the information from the old HD to the new SSD? i plan to knock out the partitions and reformat the old drive when i am satisfied.can it be simple as borrowing a restore point from the old disK?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to use Paragon migrate to move Windows 7 from HDD to SSD. Apparently there is something wrong with my "boot records of partitions" according to Paragon tech support and that is why Migrate doesn't do the job. They want me to use the following on my HDD to try and fix it.
- Create Windows 7 Repair Disc (Control Panel - Backup & Restore - Create a system repair disc)
- Select Use recovery tools and then select Recovery console from recovery tools menu
- type the next commands:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootsect /nt60 all
can that mess my booting of Windows in any way, as thus far my Windows 7 work fine? Is there a way to check the health of "boot records of partitions" without these commands, as I fear it will just replace it and that might cause Windows be unstable.
Unless anyone has inside knowledge that ssd prices are going to half in next few months, Crucial M4 64GB at around $100 is just too tempting to ignore.
In my current setup, user profiles are already on a different partition. I'm looking for the best way to migrate as much settings as possible. Among programs I have to reinstall and config are vs2010, sql server 2008, office 2003, quicken, vmware. Glad I made concious decision to use as much portable programs as possible.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm a software developer at a small shop and we're exploring the idea of having a bare bones Linux box or something else with lots or RAM and CPU to run VMWare and Windows 7 VM to host our development environment. We are often installing new components for our development tools and other trial software and the like to research new technologies. Ultimately our machine is so bogged down after 6 months or so that a reformat is necessary. This takes about a day to get everything back into a state to resume development.
We'd like to have master VMs that we keep up to date with the latest Windows updates, antivirus definitions, and versions of the common tools that we all use like Notepad++, Sysinternals Suite, and others. Every so often each of us will grab the master VM to our host machine to have the same copy of our most up to date development environment. Is there some way to copy down the user profile data so that we can restore it on the new VM when it is deployed? Items of personal preference like desktop shortcuts, Windows themes, pinned items on the taskbar, and other organizational items would be a pain to lose.

I would like to move my installation onto my new SSD (only 256GB), and obviously I can't simply clone it. I do NOT want to just install from scratch (I have a bazillion programs installed, it would take forever to do that over)
What I was thinking, was that I could migrate the base system files onto the SSD, and then use symbolic links to point to my bulkier folders (Program Files & Downloads are taking up most of the space, and I don't particularly care if these are at SSD speed) which would be located on the 2TB HDD. Does anyone know of a way to migrate a Windows 7 while excluding certain folders? If I could do that, then after the migration I could just set up symbolic links to point to my main storage drive without having to start from scratch.
A little background on my system's configuration. My system was/is configured is a two disk RAID0 with a system partition and two other partition for Windows and programs. I'm wanting to migrate the partitions/data to a single disk system. I created a system image using both the Windows backup software and Novabackup. The problem I'm having is restoring either of those images to a single disk. Is it possible to restore an image from a RAID configuration to a single disk? If so, what am I missing? No matter which image I try to restore from, I either get a fail from Windows or can't be done in so many words from Novabackup. I just want the RAID image on a single disk.

Then I store all my Data on other Harddrives.I want to upgrade my applications disk to a larger capacity, but I worry about maintaining the integrity of Disknames (IDs) so I won't have to re-install all my Applications again.My plan is to make an Image or Clone of the Apps disc on the New HD and then change the Name of the Apps disk ( D: ) to new name ( Z: ) . Then I would need to reboot, before naming the New Apps disc as the new D:the effect of rebooting without any Apps disc at all.. and would everything work after renaming the new Disc back to D: and making a final reboot?
