Migrate Windows 7 To A New Drive?
Sep 14, 2011Replacing my hard drive with a new larger drive. Currentlly running Windows 7 Pro-64bit and the older drive has several partitions. Do I have the following steps correct?
1) Create a system repair disc
2) Create a system image of the "reserve" and "C:" partitions on an external/network drive
3) Install the new hard drive
4) Use the system repair disc to restore the image onto the new drive
5) Connect the older drive as secondary
6) Transfer other files to the new primary drive as needed/wanted
The older drive may end up in a different build for the family.

Jul 15, 2010I'm running out of disc and want to preferable migrate the whole kit and kaboodle to a new drive. I'd like to use the current drive as a rendering drive.Is there an easy and "free" way of doing this or should I just bite the bullet and reinstall?

Feb 9, 2013I have an HP G62 laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 7. I would like to fully remove all data on the HDD and reinstall Windows 7.The 'Computer' section of the Start button shows the following HDD (not sure if these are partitions or not, but I'm assuming that they are!):
Local Disk ( C: )
Recovery ( D: )
HP_TOOLS ( F: )
I had a quick look at the D: drive and it showed a few setup files, all of which seem to be related to MSOFFICE. :-?I have been reading about data destruction programs that will absolutely wipe the drive and remove all data; I would like to do this and then reinstall Windows 7 so that the laptop effectively becomes a 'new' one.
1. How do I go about formatting the HDD with a data destruction program and then reinstall Win 7, since I do not have a bootable disc?
2. How reliable are such data destruction programs? Is there any margin of error? (I am a bit concerned about all the sensitive information that I have saved on my laptop such as bank details, family photos, etc.)

Then I store all my Data on other Harddrives.I want to upgrade my applications disk to a larger capacity, but I worry about maintaining the integrity of Disknames (IDs) so I won't have to re-install all my Applications again.My plan is to make an Image or Clone of the Apps disc on the New HD and then change the Name of the Apps disk ( D: ) to new name ( Z: ) . Then I would need to reboot, before naming the New Apps disc as the new D:the effect of rebooting without any Apps disc at all.. and would everything work after renaming the new Disc back to D: and making a final reboot?

However, will I have to reinstall everything? Mar 21, 2012Recently my wife caught a virus on her computer (HP touchsmart windows 7 home premium). Your typical virus program that sends hundreds of pop up screens and says click this for full removal, blah blah blah. Anyways I used malwarebytes to see if the program could be removed, malwarebytes found 5 problems and I removed them. Afterward I noticed that there were no icons on the screen, I tried to bring up task manager and the computer rebooted. once the computer rebooted, there was a black screen with "no operating system found".
I tried the "repair your computer" option on the Windows 7 disk, but it was not able to repair the problem automatically, I also tried some manual command scan prompts that I found on the net. None of this has worked so far.
I figured that I would take the hdd out of her computer and dock it to another computer. The hard drive connected fine, but when I tried to open it there was nothing in there. I tried to make sure that all files were not hidden (they weren't). Funny thing is when I click on properties for the drive it shows that the drive is 2/3rds full but I can't see any files or information when I try to search the drive. I also just tried copying the hard drive to another harddrive and it was copying files but once I opened the new location, it was still empty (even thought the folder said in properties 84 gigs).
Is there something that I am missing, I would like to retrieve all of her documents, pictures etc. then I could reformat that drive and re-install windows if I can not get it to boot back up correctly.

Feb 7, 2011I have 2 hard drives, an SSD for my OS, and a 2nd drive that I store all my files on. I had to do a reinstall this morning, and since I understand Windows 7 has issues installing sometimes when there's 2 discs connected, I disconnected the power and sata cable from my 2nd drive. So I install Windows 7, and it goes fine. I turn off the computer, plug the 2nd drive back in, turn the computer on and see the drive letter, but when I click on it, I get a message "You need to format the disc before you use it". I go into disc management and it's listed there as well, but the File System is listed as Raw.
Since Windows 7 only takes 15 minutes to install on the SSD I use, I decided to install it once again but leaving the 2nd drive connected this time. My BIOS recognizes that the disc is there, as does windows. It's just telling me it's in RAW right now, and I have no clue how that happened. Oddly enough I even made an UBUNTU disc and booted to that...but from UBUNTU that 2nd drive doesn't even show up, it only recognizes the existence of my primary hard drive.

I've done a bit of research on the topic and found a few programs (DBAN, Eraser) that seem to do this. I'm not exactly sure which program is best though, or what exactly they do. I would also like to reinstall Windows 7 after erasing the hard drive. However, my copy of Windows 7 is an upgrade from the computer's original OS, Windows Vista. The computer didn't come with any system recovery or OS install disks so I'm not sure how to boot and install and OS after erasing everything. Will I be able to just put in the Windows 7 upgrade disk and install it? (I can't imagine it could be that simple, but who knows!) I do kind of remember a "clean install option" when I upgraded - would that be the same as clearing the hard drive and reinstalling?

Oct 3, 2011I am trying to help a friend out with his Sony Vaio E Series Laptop. The computer had crashed and he tried to do a clean install of windows but it failed and nothing would respond. Even when you tired to do a clean install of windows again it just went to the light blue windows screen with the bird and nothing happened. So I used Dban to Wipe the hard drive clean and start over from scratch. After I wiped it I tried to reinstall windows and it says there are no signed device drivers found. So I checked the bios and it's not even registering the hard drive. I have been searching the boards everywhere to find a solution to this. The Bios does not allow for much change so I can not make sure it is set to a SATA connection and I have tried turning off the signed device option when starting up. Nothing is working.

May 28, 2012Due to a windows crash, I had to reinstall windows 7 (64 bit). My windows files in on an SSD and most all of my programs are on another SATA drive. The windows install went through, but none of the programs from the other drive show up when I click on the start button/all programs (somewhat understandable). Is there any quick way to get all of the programs (office, photoshop, etc.) that are on my D drive to appear where you click on "all programs"? Also, can I just delete my windows.old folder from my C drive to free up space? Any reason it is needed? Do I just delete it?
