A few days ago my Flash and HTML5 audio stopped working, but the video shows up fine. I tried all of the browser I could think of (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, IE, I even made my own) and I got the same problem. Sound does work, though, in other programs like iTunes and Skype. When I tried Silverlight it worked fine.
i've done a fair amount of reading and searching on cpu usage in windows 7 (both beta & rc 1) and haven't had any luck with this issue yet.
the issue i'm having is my cpu usage spikes up to 80-100% very often and performance of any other task during this period is frustratingly laggy. these spikes happen from even the simplest action ranging from opening the start menu, to scrolling through text on a webpage and worst of all playing video (Internet is my benchmark tool, 80% usage guaranteed during video play).
using any web browser with 3+ tabs open is guaranteed to spike cpu usage over 50%. multitasking in general begets a sluggish os performance.
some of the solutions i've read and tried:
installing nvidia's windows 7 video drivers, no improvement.
disabling the hd audio in device manager seems to help a lot of people, i don't have this in my device manager.
sound drivers/devices also seem to be a leading source of cpu over-usage in a lot of cases. i've tried disabling/removing my sound card, drivers, and audio services to no avail. i initially had a sound card and on-board sound (ac97) running and disabling one of the two had a minor improvement in performance but nothing spectacular.
even with both disabled the cpu usage still spikes to 90-100% during video play, not to mention the video stutters and stops often.
i also had on-board lan in addition to a wireless card installed so i've switched between the two, disabling one or the other with no marked improvement.
setting the page file to manual control with a 4+ gb size setting, no difference.
disabling aero, using a windows 7 classic theme, no dice.
i like to think that my hardware is strong enough to handle video streaming/playing without maxing out the cpu but if you think i'm mistaken then feel free to let me know. my windows 7 performance score was somewhere around 3.4. i've also watched the process explorer extensively and i can't find any service that sticks out terribly.
any ideas? any diagnostic tools you guys would recommend?
I have three flash drives, one a 1gb HP flash drive, one a 2gb Sandisk Cruzer, and one a 16gb Patriot XTWhen the HP 1gb drive and Sandisk 2gb are plugged in during boot, nothing happens. It POSTs fine and starts windows. When the Patriot drive is plugged in during boot, the BIOS hangs 2/3rds of the way through POST.I have tried multiple formatting schemes. Also note that there is absolutely nothing on any of these drives, they are empty and freshly formatted.1gb formatted to FAT works, FAT32 works, exFAT works, all regardless of allocation size.2gb formatted to FAT works, FAT32 works, exFAT works, all regardless of allocation size.16gb formatted to FAT32 fails, exFAT fails, regardless of allocation size. have tried a full (non-quick) format to check for bad sectors, to no avail I have tried HP format tool rather than windows format tool, to no avail. So at this point I'm thinking it's the Dell BIOS at fault here, and I'm going to have to dualboot instead of making a multiboot drive.
so i finally decided to install Windows 7 x86 - everything went well - put all the standard stuff on there etc - i rebooted many times because of installations and updates
on my last reboot it just got stock in the bios screen (verifying dmi pool data..success! etc)
so i rebooted, same thing, took the disc out, same thing - turned off boot devices same thing
tried to use window's useless repair tools (whatever happened to repair install?) which didn't help - so i decided to format and reinstall - then it says it was unable to do that (partition error or something)
the annoying this is...is that this EXACT..i mean EXACT same thing happened when i installed vista sp1 from scratch - this happened - and to fix it i had to leave my pc open overnight with the hard drive cables all unplugged..in the morning with my fingers crossed i tried the installation again - and it worked.
my d: always disappears (single hard disk sata 233gig (250)) - sometimes it'll vanish from my computer and stuff - but this can't be the problem because the d: is a single drive on its own - my c: is a25gig partition from my e: - so it's completely unrelated.
does it matter how i replug the sata cables (2 of them) into the mother board? - they're both being recognised anyway
this is really annoying though - mostly because there isn't really an explanation - and because this random stuff always happens to my pc! - is it my hard drive because that's the only thing that would half- make sense
I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate x86 on my Dad's HP Compaq Presario. PC has a 2.2 Gig AMD processor (processor is a 64bit but had glitches when I tried the Windows 7 64bit OS) w/2GB DDR2 Mem. All drivers are the originals from when the PC had Win XP Home on it, except for what ever Windows 7 swapped out on install. WMP12 will only play the supplied demo video and that appears as a duo image in a split screen with playback in black and white. Plays ALL audio fine, even CD's. Will Not play any Video DVD's. Installed Power DVD 11 and same problem. Windows 7 say's something about not enough memory installed and close running programs to free up memory. All programs are closed except WMP12. Have increased page file size to 1024low/8192high and every thing seems to work fine except WMP12 & PowerDVD video
Basically, i want to transfer my music collection to my usb drive, but when i do so it transfers about 70% and then it says "could not find this item - this item is no longer located in...." it says that the item is not longer located on my usb... but i was trying to transfer it from my pc to my usb so it should be put on there. It says this for like 380 items which is the rest of the data i wanted to transfer.
I wondered why it said it was no longer located on my usb, then when i looked on my computer, it shows my usb (and other flash drives on my computer) as unformatted, it just says there FAT32 format and when i click on it, they show as empty, even though i know thers alot of things on there.
Basically to fix this i have to restart my pc and then its all fine again, my flash drives show up fine and they are formatted and the files on them can be accessed.
But not all the music is on my flash drive so i have to transfer the rest over again like i did before, this time it transfers some and then has the same problem and i have to restart. Eventually i can get all the music on my usb after restarting a few more times.
My question is... why is this happening? ive no idea why but my flash drives just show up as unformatted half way through. There must be a way to stop this or something.
I am running windows media center in windows 7 pro. I am getting choppy video sometimes (recorded tv, streaming downloads, and other video files). The problem goes away if I reboot the computer but comes back again the next day or even sooner. I would like a guess as to whether the problem night be my video card, a codec, windows 7 itself or something else.
I am experiencing a very mild video stutter, which is to say that it is not a big lag and jump, but looks more like old film on a projector... as if there were fewer frames per second than what is really there. The audio is fine and stays in sync. I can buffer large streaming videos and usually they play back fine, but if I do other things with my machine, then the stutter will start.
I know it is not the source video, because a restart will correct the issue and the same stream will play just fine. This stutter also effects my screen saver. I have nVidia hybrid SLI, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M on board and NVIDIA GeForce 9400 card. They both run between 50C (no load) and 60C (moderate load - World of Warcraft, low video settings). System RAM never goes over 50%, and CPU's never go above 60C.
A few days ago, after a restart of my PC, I didn't get any sound at all, and still don't get it. All my drivers are updated, realtek, motherboard drivers, graphic driver... I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling realtek driver and software. Windows media player is playing a song. In the "sound" menu (top left), the speakers (defined for realtek hd audio) are also working, the green bars go up and down.
In the device manager (down left) I have realtek driver, updated. and all nvidia drivers (as it always been, and also i checked another pc and has it too). Realtek manager works fine, recognize when I plug into the front or the rear jack (using the green one at the rear), everything seems ok. but (!) the "volume" menu (down right) doesn't have a green bar that goes up and down, and - I don't hear any sound at all... tried connecting speakers to iphone - the speakers are fine, works well.
So on Friday installed a new video card (7850) and this morning I had opened up the case as I have been experiencing some freezing with the new card (reason why I replaced the old card) however I have never had sound issues.I did the following prior to leaving today:Rebooted system a few times, had removed video card a few times, inserted monitor cable into the motherboard, booted that up, disabled the vga adapter, then rebooted and turned it on again (figured it might help with the freezing) I also pressed the reset button that is ON this motherboard (Asus P8z68-V Pro)So in any event long story short, When I came home today i didnt hear sound. I have tried just about everything, the Windows 7 seems to reflect sound is "fine" all the drivers are fine, I see the volume going up, I know the right speaker is "default" nothing is muted. I remove the speakers plug them into the other computer and they work fine. Also the head phones don't work in any slot either (i have several jacks on the computer for headphones)I am thinking during the reboot I have fried something on the MB preventing me from using the analog cables for sound. Should I try the HDMI on the video card to avoid having to replace the MB if this was the case? Windows 7 does not tell me anything is wrong with any hardware.I even updated the drivers for sound etc but remember this is a sudden issue, thats why I dont think its a "setting" problem.

My laptop is 5 months old ,it is hpdv6 3079tx. My laptop got i7 processor with win 7 64 bit. Currently I am facing a problem with my laptop. The sound is not coming out from the in built speakers as headphone is working very well. The sound from in built speakers last for just 2 to 3 mint and then goes off.

All this happened suddenly, I was playing Counter strike and I could hear the back grounds but the dialogues and gunshots could not be heard. After that when I tried some movies, All the dialogues had been gone. I could hear the background music and background sounds but the midtones had been gone.
I tried many media players and different files but all had same results. The funny thing is The audio files are working all right only the video files have the problem. I tried restarting, Tried diff video files and diff players including VLC, Windows media player etc.
I have windows 7 Ultimate x64, i used to be able to see thumbnail previews on all my video files.I can no longer see thumbnail for my .mod and .mp4 files but can see .avi andThis started after i uninstalled Nero 10I Have tryed Start -> Computer -> Right Click -> Properties -> Advanced system settings in left panel -> Click the first button named "Settings" in right panel, and check Show thumbnails instead of icons with no joyalso tryedsetting Widows media player as default andDefault file type associations - restore for mpeg
For my radio project and podcasts I've invested in a digital microphone. I also got a wireless keyboard and mouse with volume control, not very important but it factors in.
When I start Windows I have two sound devices: The actual speakers and this ProSound mic. Under the actual speakers would be things like VLC and under the mic would be other vital things like Iron (Chrome). If I want to watch/listen to something online I have to plug out the mic. This puts all the programs under the Speakers device. If I plug it back in these programs RETURN to the ProSound mic.
So first of all I need to know why my programs made this choice and how do I put a stop to it? Secondly how do I make my speakers my primary device so I can use these awesome volume controls I paid out the *** to use.
When I try to connect my TV to my laptop via an HDMI cable the video works but the sound still plays from my laptop. I used to have no problems with the sound, but now it doesn't even show up as an output option. I have tried restarting the laptop with and without the HDMI connected and with the TV both on and off (I saw this suggestion in another post) but that did not work. How do I get HDMI to show up as an output option and get the sound to play through the TV?
I am about to lose it. I have tried several firefox addons, tried replay media catcher and other media catchers/downloaders and all fail to download a simple flash video from a website. The frustrating part is that the video is non-existent in firefox cache as well so there is no way to download this. Replay media catcher and all these useless video downloaders.

when I put fullscreen anykind of flash video like megavideo or videobb or others, fps rate is really low! I have disabled any windows visual effect and have tried on IE, Firefox and Opera and the problem is still the same. Cpu never goes above 40% so it is not performances problem... what is this?
when using sites like bbc iplayer or Internet the sound plays fine but the video freezes for a second every few seconds, i also see the same issue in vlc, windows media seems fine.
also my pc beeps repetitively when i exit firefox after having choppy playback, this last for a minute or so, this doesn't happen with vlc.
i have tried updating my nvidea drivers and also direct x but this has made no difference.
i use the latest version of firefox but have tried internet explorer and it has the same issues.
my pc is brand new from dell, although i re-installed everything from a fresh copy of windows seven as soon as i got it
i have 1 terabyte of space split over 2 actual drives that are partitioned into 4 drives, my c drive has 84 gb spare.
i have installed a windows 7 ultimate rtm trial on my pc and connected it to my internode nakedadsl2+ ultra net connection. it is an 18mbit connection with cat6 cables and when downloading a test file from internode's servers pulls about 1200kb/s.
i have noticed, ever since running 7085, that Internet and other video streaming sites (including facebook, collegehumour, etc.) that the buffering is very patchy. it does not seem to matter if it is a flash or vimeo or any other kind of video streaming. often times, i will be watching a video and the progress bar will catch up with the buffering and simply stop buffering. then when i try to re-watch the video, the already buffered material is in the cache and that is all that loads. it does not continue buffering from where it stopped. very annoying!
i also have a machine with xp which buffers much quicker and with minimal interruptions.
can anyone help with this and has anyone noticed the same thing?
Playing Flash videos in either regular or full screen will freeze PC to a point I have no option but to hard boot.
Long-term gaming has no issues, nor does long term PC "on-time".
An annoying "humm" is all i get besides a completely frozen desktop.
I have tested both IE 8, both 32bit and 64bit, and Firefox 3.55 32bit.
I have used the tools available from adobe to remove former versions, and reinstalled the newest available.
I came across a couple "tweaking solutions", but neither of which have worked.
1)disable java in firefox 2)disable hardware acceleration in Flash
I even went on to allow unlimited storage within flash for the sites i watch the most.
The videos can last anywhere from 2 seconds upwards of 30 minutes. No mouse movement, nothing else running, besides Comodo Firewall. (which I hope isn't the problem).
The last 2 things I have NOT tried yet is updating my BIOS, and a clean install. (original install was clean though)
This PC is a homebuild, and a completely new machine to me. SO i have yet to refine which drivers work best for me. It is only about 2 weeks old.
i cant access some flash video content using ie9..i have downloaded the latest adobe flash player but still cannot play video from you tube..i am using a 32 bit system withwindows 7 pro should i roll back to ie 8?
my specs: emachines notebook intel core i3 cpu 2gb ram windows 7 64 bit browsers installed ie8, firefox 4 and chrome avg free edition installed shockwave flash 10.3.181.4 installed for ff graphics driver intel hd graphics driver version 8.15.10.2119 i'm accessing the internet through wireless internet i have been having a problem where playing flash video has crashed all the browsers i have installed. this issue has happened on multiple websites including Internet and bbc iplayer. it started happening out of the blue on 25th may 2011. there doesn't appear to be any microsoft updates added at that time and i did not install any new software on that day.
in firefox the issue happens 100% of the time. after watching for a few minutes the video starts to buffer and then the browser completely freezes up before the frame greys out and the option to send crash report appears. when i reload the page the same thing happens again. sometimes the audio will start to repeat itself with a delay of a few seconds before crashing.
in chrome, the same thing happens except the built in plug in becomes unresponsive and the browser then freezes and reports the error. ie crashes too although i hardly ever use it to be honest.
the things i have tried to fix this so far (without success) have been: manually uninstall all adobe products uninstall all browsers delete folders and reg entries for flash and delete folders for browsers reinstall software and flash run malwarebytes (no warnings or bad files). run a registry cleaner. nothing reported that seemed to be relevant to flash or media playback. uninstall flash revert back to flash 10.2 (i actually noticed a slight improvement when using 10.2 but cannot access embedded video in facebook etc so wasn't a viable option for me). disable avg and try playback unistall avg and try playback uninstall avg and windows firewall and try playback check for new video driver updated (there were none) untick enable hardware acceleration allow flash to store content in global settings i have not done a system restore and do not really want to do that if possible.
the only other thing i have noticed is that it has been difficult to install exe files from the web since this issue started (when trying to reinstall browsers etc). windows was corrupting the installers for chrome and firefox as well as the malware bytes.
