Intermittent Video Stutter - Audio Fine And Stay In Sync
Jan 23, 2011
I am experiencing a very mild video stutter, which is to say that it is not a big lag and jump, but looks more like old film on a projector... as if there were fewer frames per second than what is really there. The audio is fine and stays in sync. I can buffer large streaming videos and usually they play back fine, but if I do other things with my machine, then the stutter will start.
I know it is not the source video, because a restart will correct the issue and the same stream will play just fine. This stutter also effects my screen saver. I have nVidia hybrid SLI, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M on board and NVIDIA GeForce 9400 card. They both run between 50C (no load) and 60C (moderate load - World of Warcraft, low video settings). System RAM never goes over 50%, and CPU's never go above 60C.

the problem is stuttering. i get stutters in games, game movie scenes, videos, Internet videos, even as i type this to you know at times what i am typing doesn't appear, it stutters, then the words appear. in games, the stutter is probably every 10 seconds or so and makes games unbearable to play. with movies, the video will freeze but the audio will carry on, then once the stutter ends the video catches up and synchronizes with the audio. in firefox, like i mentioned earlier sometimes what i type doesn't appear for a few seconds, and also when i click on links it occasionally stutters. my laptop is an alienware mx15 which is less than 18 months old and 2months ago i wiped and reinstalled windows. things i have tried so far?
- updated graphics card driver which is a nvidea geforce gtx 420
- i did a disc defrag
- error checking of the hard drive (this got rid of the stuttering for about 10 mins whilst i was playing a game. however, when i go back to the properties on my c drive and look at this option again, there is the shield (2 blue quarters and 2 yellow quarters) usually this means an update, but nothing happens.

i'm using windows 7 32-bit, i7 processor, 4gb ram, onboard audio (with realtek) and a geforce gt220 video card.when i play a video the audio is always faster than the video. i use umplayer, so fortunately i can use the plus or minus keys to sync everything up. however on Internet or other online videos it's almost always out of sync, as well as when i watch something streamed from my pc to my xbox using windows media center. i'm thinking it's either a windows 7 problem or a hardware problem. i've googled it and found nothing similar with a solution.oh, and i use avira anti-virus, not norton or mcafee.

Recently, within the past couple of weeks or so, whenever I play a video (avi, wmv, mp4) in Media Player (or VLC) the the video and audio is out of sync. It's not out by much, but it is clearly noticeable. Oddly, if I play them in Media Player Classic they appear to be in sync (or as near as).I know for a fact that these videos used to play fine, so it's not a problem with the files themselves. I haven't knowingly downloaded any codecs or anything else that may have caused this, and I've scanned extensively for viruses and spyware.I want to reiterate that up until a while ago the videos played fine, so it's not a spec problem. For information, I'm running Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on a G840 2.80GHz dual core with 8Gb of RAM.Internet searches have so far turned up nothing. I'm tempted to fish out my old XP machine and test the videos on there,

I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate x86 on my Dad's HP Compaq Presario. PC has a 2.2 Gig AMD processor (processor is a 64bit but had glitches when I tried the Windows 7 64bit OS) w/2GB DDR2 Mem. All drivers are the originals from when the PC had Win XP Home on it, except for what ever Windows 7 swapped out on install. WMP12 will only play the supplied demo video and that appears as a duo image in a split screen with playback in black and white. Plays ALL audio fine, even CD's. Will Not play any Video DVD's. Installed Power DVD 11 and same problem. Windows 7 say's something about not enough memory installed and close running programs to free up memory. All programs are closed except WMP12. Have increased page file size to 1024low/8192high and every thing seems to work fine except WMP12 & PowerDVD video

basically i am downloading Internet videos which come as mp4 files, i then convert them with no compression with the program "super" to avi. now when i add the videos to wlmm they play fine and i can edit them perfect, but when i turn the project to a wmv file and play the video, some of the clips seem to be out of sync for audio/video. i have spent hours editing these clips as i didn't think the conversion wlmm makes would effect it as when i play the clips in the wlmm portable player the problem doesn't occur.

Certain audio CD's stutter when played and I am wondering what to look to change as to settings to resolve the issue. When running Resource Monitor, the CD's that stutter are showing that the "CPU", "Network", and "Memory" are all operating in the middle of the charts, but "Disk" is spiking at 100% and then dropping to lower values and then spiking again.Only certain commercially recorded CD's demonstrate this behavior such as Trans Siberian Orchestra, while others like BIllboard and such do not stutter and do not spike on "Disk" and play normally.

My computer - HP Pavilion P7-1010. Windows 7 64bit home edition..My Laptop - HP mini 1000 with XP I play this game, Trickster Online.. and they have a "stay connected for 100+hrs" event..On my laptop with XP, it will stay connected until I Disconnect it.On my PC, it will stay connected for like 5-20mins, then log everything out. EVEN if i am still using the internet.. (its not Idle!)
I've tried the following:
-Turned off "Disable this to save power"
-Turned all my Windows power settings to "never hibernate, no screensaver, etc" even no shutting off of the monitor.
-Tried Wireless and wired, (Both same results)
-Reformating the computer to get rid of any rogue programs messing the net up
-Updateing drivers and Windows

After installing Windows 7 64 bit yesterday, I'm very happy with it, but I've come across my first problem;Whenever I type at any sort of speed (most of the time, I touch type), regardless of the software in which I'm typing, the audio seems to lag or stutter very slightly, as if input from the keyboard is too much for the machine to process. It's only noticeable when I'm playing music.Perhaps I'm being a little lazy starting a thread this early, as I haven't yet exhausted all my options, but I'm curious to see if anyone's experienced the same issue and can save me some time. So far I've installed the latest Audio drivers I could find, to no avail. The next thing I'll try is to update my video card drivers, as it's currently only using the default Windows 7 wdm one. I figure if the UI of Windows 7 uses hardware acceleration, it might have an issue there.
System specs, for reference:
CPU: AMD Athlon64 X2 4600+
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H rev. 1.0 (Realtek Azalia HD Audio chipset)
Memory: 2Gb DDRII 800
Video card: ATI Radeon 9800GT 512MB
Audio player: Winamp 5.55 (latest version)
It seems ATI's latest catalyst driver package for windows 7 doesn't list my video card as being supported, only the newer HD series cards, but I might give it a go anyway.

I very recently put together a new build for myself with a friend. Everything was great until the audio and visual would occasionally lock up for a second. The screen momentarily freezes and the sound makes what I can only describe as a digital stutter.
My build:
Asus P8Z68-V/GEN3 Motherboard
Intel Sandybridge i5-2500K Unlocked Core i5 Quad-Core Processor (3.30GHz, 6MB Cache, Socket 1155)
2 x Asus 1GB GeForce GTX 560TI DirectCUII PCI-E Graphics Cards*running in SLi
Wireless network is a*TP-Link TL-WN781ND 150Mbps Wireless PCI Express Adapter

Yesterday when I got home I could not get my headset working on my PC. It's a USB headset (Tritton AX720) but it works perfectly on my Xbox 360. There is sound coming from the headset but it is really quiet. My speakers to my computer work fine, it's just when I plug the headset in I'm not getting sound. I was working on it for about an hour last night and I can't figure out what is wrong with it. So far I've tried to make it my default audio device, I did a system restore to a few days ago, and messed with the setting a little bit. This headset has worked on my PC for about 6-8 months up until yesterday. By the way my audio for my computer is still working perfectly. It is only when I plug my headset in that it isn't working properly. I'm completely lost on what is wrong.

I have an ideapad Y530 that is currently experiencing audio issues.I recently upgraded from Vista to 7 Ultimate and ever since the audio only works about 1 and 10 times. I have found many posts on the net with similar issues but nothing exatly like mine. All speakers have been enabled, audio driver updated and every type of trouble shooting tried.Basically i start the computer, get the Lenovo boot-up jingle, then no sound. But every ten starts, or so, the sound works perfectly? The only other strange thing i notice is that if i plug in speakers and put the volume on FULL i can hear sound ever so faintly.Feels like some sort of conflict but i cannot find one. Its as if Windows 7 loads the driver sometimes and not others, but if so why is the sound faint when i plug in speakers? Should i open the laptop to search for physical damage between the motherboard and speaker connections?

I turned my computer on to find no audio playing. My main audio device plays bac audio from DAW just fine but if I load a video in WMP i get a code C00D11B1. If I try to play a test tone in the sound settings I get "Failed to play test tone". I have other audio devices connected and also get the same errors which makes me think this is a registry error or some windows communication error. The only thing I think might have caused this is when I was trying to get my ram to run at 1866. This is a new build and the ram should run at this speed as it is in the QVL but that is another issue. I should also mention that I have tried reloading the device drivers, updated the BIOS, and restyored windows from a previous state with no change.

so i finally decided to install Windows 7 x86 - everything went well - put all the standard stuff on there etc - i rebooted many times because of installations and updates
on my last reboot it just got stock in the bios screen (verifying dmi pool data..success! etc)
so i rebooted, same thing, took the disc out, same thing - turned off boot devices same thing
tried to use window's useless repair tools (whatever happened to repair install?) which didn't help - so i decided to format and reinstall - then it says it was unable to do that (partition error or something)
the annoying this is...is that this EXACT..i mean EXACT same thing happened when i installed vista sp1 from scratch - this happened - and to fix it i had to leave my pc open overnight with the hard drive cables all unplugged..in the morning with my fingers crossed i tried the installation again - and it worked.
my d: always disappears (single hard disk sata 233gig (250)) - sometimes it'll vanish from my computer and stuff - but this can't be the problem because the d: is a single drive on its own - my c: is a25gig partition from my e: - so it's completely unrelated.
does it matter how i replug the sata cables (2 of them) into the mother board? - they're both being recognised anyway
this is really annoying though - mostly because there isn't really an explanation - and because this random stuff always happens to my pc! - is it my hard drive because that's the only thing that would half- make sense

everytime i watch a video, whether it be on Internet or vlc, i get this problem that makes every background noise come forward and louder, and the voices are incredibly quiet, when someone does speak the entire audio becomes choppy, like its grinding, this happened last night while i was using vlc just before i started a new episode, now it does it on Internet, even my itunes music is like it, i just get drums and bass.i've tried restarting the computer, even disabling the sound card driver ( i use realtech audio by the by) i've even uninstalled and reinstalled vlc to see if that was a possible fix, but nope, its still the damn same.

A few days ago my Flash and HTML5 audio stopped working, but the video shows up fine. I tried all of the browser I could think of (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, IE, I even made my own) and I got the same problem. Sound does work, though, in other programs like iTunes and Skype. When I tried Silverlight it worked fine.

I am running windows media center in windows 7 pro. I am getting choppy video sometimes (recorded tv, streaming downloads, and other video files). The problem goes away if I reboot the computer but comes back again the next day or even sooner. I would like a guess as to whether the problem night be my video card, a codec, windows 7 itself or something else.

Starting about a month ago, after six to seven months of my laptop working fine, I've been getting video and audio stuttering whenever gaming or watching most HD videos and after messing around with my drivers I realized that whenever my Realtek HD Audio drivers are disabled my video runs flawlessly, but when enabled both video and audio stutter. I'm using a Sony VAIO laptop so I'm assuming that the sound card isn't easily replaceable. I've tried using the newest drivers straight from Realtek's website and also the outdated driver provided by Sony's website, both of which result in the same stuttering. Sony has also replaced the motherboard once and it did not resolve the issue.I'm currently running Windows 7 with 6gb of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 330M graphics card.

i'm running a windows 7 home premium 64 bit, and for some movies, the video will start in-sync for about 40 minutes, then slowly get farther and farther out of sync, making watching the video un-watchable after another 10 minutes. but it does not do this with all video types. it also does not do this with netflix, Internet, or anything else online.
i'm running a geforce gtx 660m, all drivers are up to date. the files that work are: mp4, files that don't work are: mkv, avi
those are the only files i have tried. it's done this since i got this computer a couple months ago

A weird freeze/stutter thing occured on my system (Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate) today at midnight (00:00). It was present for a second and was gone. My sound became corrupt during that second, as if BIOS was flashing, but after a second, the system unfreezed and returned to normal.I had this on my old computer, and not exactly sure what's causing that. I looked in the event viewer and the only log I could find at that time was this:"Windows Time service entered the running state." - Brief translation from my native language. [code]

i had some dodgy memory, but running memtest (which i needed too do to RMA) really buggered up my system, as i was getting instant BSOD just trying to get into memtest. Anyway manged it and duff memory sent off, i insert my working memory and get loads of windows errors and issues. Cut my losses and format and start a fresh. New Build...So everything is installed and working, however i seem to get some input lag and stutter when windows loads, but apart from that it seemed ok for the entire day. When i tried to play Battlefield3 i would get in to the game between 1 and 5mins my gcard fans go mental and the pc shuts down.temps are fine, but wondering if i have somehow borked my gcard or mobo using the dodgy memory? At a loss knowing what is at fault.all hardware has been working fine for about 8 weeks before i added the new duff memory. memtest says current memory is fine and i was able to stress test using prime for 45mins (all overclocks removed)

I am having stuttering Issues while playing any game, occasionally my mouse does this laggy thing on the desktop but rarely, but when in game about 5 minutes into it the game starts acting like im having lag spikes, but it does it when playing non online games as well. Mainly Metro 2033 (most noticeable when a bomb goes off) and Counter Strike GO after 5 minutes or so.When I originally had this problem I had used a program called ToolWiz which I would not recommend, it changes way to much and deleted things from windows. In any Case I reformatted my computer hoping it would solve the problem. [code] Have a Hyper 212 on the CPU 4 great case fans. Idles temps are CPU: 29c 39c under load.... GPU 30c 47c under load.I used FRAPS when in CS GO to check FPS and normal I get about 120fps, WHen the glitching stuff started the fps never went below 90fps, so given for changes in enviroment, I would say FPS isnt an issue. All drivers are updated. Going to run Memtest tonight, but doubt that I will see any issues.
Im trying to get Memtest to boot from disc, but cant seem to get it to load at start up, (had similar problem when I installed fresh OS, had to do it inside OS) But was looking through BIOS settings, and saw some things that somehow got changed, switched it back into Ganged mode, and set Voltage on DRAM to 1.55 from 1.51. Didnt have an issue before with it this low but we will see, still trying to figure out how to get that darn memtest disc to load.

About 2 months ago I bought a new laptop. (Asus n56v). Since day one, I noticed every application I run will freeze or stutter every now and then. Its totally random when it does this. No matter what I am doing, web browsing, watching a video or playing a game. I always notice the application will stutter. I never get any errors, the applications never crash they just stutter for a second. Now, being a smart wiz that I am, I half screened a video playing, while I had task manger opened in the other half. I went to the performance tab and waited. Sure enough when the video started to stutter, I noticed all of my cores went up to 100% for the time the video was stuttering.
Then they went back to normal 1 - 5%. Again its not just 1 program that does this. Every program does this. Its not my drivers as I installed them over and over again. Its not my video card as I was able to switch to my on board intel 4000 gpu and it still does the same thing. So my only theory now is that there is a background application running that seems to be trying to do something quite intensive every now and then and this seems to be making my applications stutter. So is there a way to check to see what application is using 100% of my cpu every now and then?
More info on my laptop:

Nvidia GT 650m

ive been revieving some stutter noticibly when playing and form of video or audio and it has been getting worse as of late. Overall performance has dropped as well.Ive tried using Latency Checker and Latencymon and Realtek Ethernet Diagnostics Utility to try and diagnose the problem and the closest thing ive come to is that it has something to do with 'Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller' as when I disable it the stutter appears to vanish and latency readings drop however I need that to connect to the internet so keeping it removed is not really an option.I have tried using a variety of drivers and methods from this forum and others and none have come to be of any use as of yet. I bought an Nvidia 570gtx and I am able to have both audio and sound to play on my TV as a second monitor. However to do this I have to go into windows 7 screen resolution screen and duplicate the displays though ones 1900x1200 and the Tv is 1920x1080 causing the PC screen to look funky but I can live with it to launch the games.I than have to go into the sound properties and set the default for the system to the HDMI cable and I can play my games on the TV like I want. (about 30 feet away)When done I have to come back and undue each setting to get control back to my PC.

With Windows XP SP3 I was able to transmit audio which was digital and sometimes multi-channel to my Denon reciever through the HDMI output on my motherboard; I was also able to simultaneoulsy display my computer through that same HDMI connection through my Denon reciever and on to my my Toshibe LCD TV.But when I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit the HDMI audio was very limited (only 16 bit 2-channel @ 48,000 Hz) and can only select it when the reciever is on (which makes sense, but it's anoying to have to go into sound properties and switch to HDMI if I started the computer before the reciever, I hate technology trying to pretend it knows what I want it to do, it should just be able to do what it's told.) Then, when I turn on the TV this message comes up (which I would see when I was using XP but it didn't change anything)An HDMI-to-DVI display connection has been detected. In order to hear audio on your HDMI based TV or display, you will need to have a seperate audio conecction from you computer sound outputs to your TV or audio equipment. However I'm not using the DVI at all I just want to use the HDMI into HDMI because that's the way it's supposed to work because HDMI is supposed to handle both and I shouldn't need to use another cord when I'm already using one that does both. And so then my sound no longer works but my computer shows on my TV.Whoopdee doo! why can't I have both. HDMI is supposed to support both and when computer/motherboard/OS manufacturers put these technologies on computers you'd think they should commit to applying them flawlessly the way they were intended to be used.I understand this may be a driver issue and I've tried many combinations of the newest & the just HDMI Realtek Driver as well as the Gigabyte mother board drivers and the appropriate ATI/Catalyst driver/downloads.
