is there any way to increase the buffer size i don't know whether this should be done on the computer or on the xbox i think it is the xbox as they seem to play ok on the computer.
when i play the avi's it seems as if only about 5 - 10 seconds is buffered then it plays then stutters then plays and so on .
In the old place my PC was upstairs but had an ethernet connection to the router downstairs.In the new place I have to run it on the wireless. I have got a 2/3 bar connection to the router, and can stream to the Xbox without a problem, for the most part.The problem occurs (and it's becoming more regular) when I turn both bits of kit on and the PC (in the media centre menu) says the Xbox is connected but the Xbox says no connection can be found.It then lists the normal helpful suggestions, and what I have to eventually do is unlink them and re build the connection.When that is back, it works fine, but turn them off and have to start all over again.

Why does Media Centre tell me the there is not enough room on the DVD (4,7 gig) to record a programme which is only 2 gig in size? It offers to do it at reduced quality and warns it may take several hours - anyone know why this is and if there is better sodtware out there to do this job.

WMC picks up all the TV channels and works well until I click the pause button. I then lose all picture and when I unpause there is only sound until I pause/unpause again, then I lose sound as well and WMC crashes with the error message "WMC has stopped working". When I restart all is fine until I pause again, and then I have the same problem.Windows tells me all my Drivers are up to date and working so I don't know what is causing this problem.

There is also nothing else apparently wrong with the computer.I never use Windows Media Centre so I wouldn't even mind getting rid of it but I don't know if Windows Media Player relies on it which I do use for certain video formats from time to time. I have an analog cable plugged into my new TV card (Its an older PC, Dell Dimension 3100) and I can see the TV channels using Win TV 7 that came with the card.
Windows Media wont even play its own sample video without giving me the above error message.
So, time to take a couple steps back and slow things down a bit here... I'm currently in the planning stages of a low-budget media centre / network storage setup and I'm hoping to glean some knowledge from some of you more experienced overclockers before I go wasting money on things I don't need.The reason I decided to post here and not in the general or media sub-forums is because of how I want to go about this. Part of my plan involves taking a decent spec system and underclock the **** out of it.... Or, at least just underclock it enough for a fanless setup. Firstly, the media centre itself is a low-cost project... So the obvious OS choice here is Linux. But, which one...? It doesn't need to have any fancy GUI or "user friendly" features. At boot, the OS itself will go straight into whichever media centre software I settle on (XBMC, MythBuntu, etc. etc.), with other services starting up silently in the background (nginx / Apache, MySQL, Samba, Webmin, etc. etc.).Everybody in my household are avid Android users (yay), so the box will most likely be controlled directly from our phones or tablets. I mean, seriously, can you name one true computer geek that wouldn't grin from ear to ear while they tell their friends how their TV remote is actually a 7" multitouch, dual-core, Android tablet...?
What sort of hardware would I need for this setup? Here's the first idea that comes to mind:1.4 to 1.8GHz dual core 1 to 2GB DDR2-PC6400 40 to 80GB OS drive Multiple 1 or 2TB 'green' drives Low profile GPU (s-video for now, HDMI can come later) Either completely fanless, or mostly fanless with a single 200mm fan at low speed for good airflow I may possibly build my own case from the ground up.I'm hoping to get this all running from the start with nothing larger than a 300w to 350w PSU if possible, perhaps even one of those funny L-shaped midget PSUs from an old Dell desktop? I've got two nice little 1680 x 1050 20.1" Dell S-IPS monitors, which are de-facto 16:10 units, mounted on an Ergotron stand, with the intention of using one for television and the other for computing purp's.My Graphics card is a capable Palit HD4850 Sonic with dual DVI outputs. It's also got an S-Video output which isn't in use.What I would like to do is run WMC maximised on one monitor, with TV there as and when I wish to view anything, and naturally I wish to use this screen maximised (the only issue in WMC is that there is a limitation of either choosing 4:3 or 16:9 ratio output, and not 16:10).However when I connect both monitors vai DVI output Windows7 locks my cursor in the maximised TV screen and I then cannot control the primary PC monitor whatsoever - which is somewhat of a complete farce, and is an extremely dissappointing result!Accordingly I have to drag the WMC display to get the 16:9 output to 'almost' fill the 16:10 monitor, and then face the annoyance of the cursor drifting to that screen from my PC monitor from time to time (I can happily live with a band to allow for the 16:9 ~ 16:10 hardware differential... but not this ridiculous loss of cursor control!)Question is this... why does my cursor focus get restricted to one screen if the Windows Media Centre is maximised? The whole point of having dual-monitors is being able to use both of them at once of course.I've tried with the ATi driver alone, and with the Catalyst suite loaded, with no differences to the issue.My monitors also have an S-Video input, but I've not got an S-Video cable to hand right now - however... if I were to use S-Video for one monitor would I avoid the 'locked in cursor' problem?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just upgraded my Media Centre from Vista x64 to Windows 7 x64.Previously when watching recorded TV I could use the skip fwd/back buttons on my remote &/or keyboard to skip fwd 30 secs, or back 7 seconds; however this no longer works. They do however work perfectly when watching/listening to Movies/Music.The on screen skip buttons still perform the same task (fwd 30s, back 7s).Reading other forum posts I gather this is because the skip buttons are looking for the next track and by its nature recorded TV doesn't have any tracks.Is there a way of editing the registry to reprogram the buttons to skip fwd a specified time frame when watching recorded TV? I'm using a logitech dinovo edge keyboard for which I've installed the latest drivers. I also use my iPhone with JumiMouse as a Remote and a Hauppage TV Tuner Remote, all the above have the same problem.

All the ID3 tags are correct (I think), but I cant get the music library working properly on the PC or Extender.The problem I have is with my Various Artists albums... the ID3 tags show song title, artist and album artist. on a various artist album the Album Artist field is set to "Various Artists". I am using an Xbox360 media extended in my living room and whilst its slow, thats a seperate issue, there are some unexpected results when searching for songs...If you search for an artist, if they have produced albums where they are the only artist, then they are listed - the ID3 tags on their personal albums have the Album Artist field set as the Artist field and all works. However when listing by Artist, there is an artist listed called "Various Artists" and every song (12,000+) which is on a compilation album is listed as being by "Various Artists" as MC seems to get the artist name from the "Album Artist" field rather than from the "Artist" field.
I thought I'd found a workaround by changing the Album Artist field to be the same as the Artist - indeed this did work, but the unexpected side effect is that when you search by album, because each track on an album shows a different Album Artist set in the ID3 tag, it lists the album seperately for every song... so you may have "Now Thats What I Call Music xx" listed 20 times - once per song!Is there any way to get media centre to catalogue songs using the "Artist" field rather than the "Album Artist" field - but also to take into account that even though songs are by different artists, should the Album Artist all be the same - then to treat as a single album??I have only just started researching this and have read a bit about Media Centre using the catalogue created by WMP - but to be honest I have never used WMP and wouldnt know where to start.
What I would like to do is to be able to access all of my music and videos from my computer and external hard drive, on my Xbox, through my router. I am using the Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus and firewall, and no third party antivirus/antispyware or firewall programs.I have an Xbox 360 Elite, not one of the new wireless versions. I went into HomeGroup on my computer and checked 'share media with devices' and also checked music, pictures, and videos. So far I can play music on the Xbox by going to the music app and choosing my PC. The problem is, I can only play songs that are directly in the Music folder on my computer. And only certain songs at that, I'm not sure why. I have a subfolder within Music called Full Albums and I cannot play ANYthing in that subfolder. What am I missing?Also, is it possible to access music and videos on my external hard drive? Provided my external hard drive is connected to my computer of course.Lastly, I can't access anything unless I disable Windows Firewall. How do I set up an exception for the Xbox so that I don't have to disable the firewall every time I want to do this?

And now, the Xbox refuses to speak to the PC.They are both on the same network, using the same router, and I have changed nothing on the PC itself, except that when I first plugged the network cable in, Windows asked me to tell it which group to join (I selected Home). The xbox is happily detecting the network and the internet, but not the PC (although the PC name is still in the list under Video Apps, but when you select it it just says "Can not find PC".

I have been through the network setting, all match up. the xbox can connect to live, it just won't connect to my pc. i allow all conection and turn off a/v and firewall still with no luck. i even tried connect them through ethernet wire, again no luck. i know my pc can connect to a xbox ( old white big guy) both wireless and wire, but i am having no luck with my xbox slim. and yes i have reset all extender stuff on pc and reet pc connection stuff through my xbox. the a/v i have is microsoft secrity esentals.

My proccessor is maxxing out whenever the process for the Media Center Network is running. The only solution i have found is to end the process manually. But it will randomly re open the process on it own and cause my proccessor to max out and use about 3/4ths of my RAM. It still re opens the process even when my 360 is shutdown and media center is not be used on the PC

Each time I install it the thing fails - absolutely will not connect with my Xbox. The _only_ way I can get it to work is to disable the Windows Firewall. Probably not the ideal thing to do.
Is there a way I can keep Windows Firewall enabled? Some of the tutorials out there say to add an exception for "Media Center Extenders", but nowhere do I see this within the settings. My system, BTW, is Windows 7 Ultimate.
Additionally, I should add that I'm hooked up wirelessly from both machines (PC and Xbox). When I connect the Xbox (when the firewall is disabled) I find the browsing is painfully slow. Any workarounds for that as well?
Whenever I press the media button on my remote, my Xbox starts up. Is there anyway I can stop that short of putting some tape over the IR receiver on the Xbox when I'm not using it?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi am trying to connect my xbox 360 as an extender. i get all the way through the setup and it fails at the last step. i have gone into my firewall and the media extender is ticked to allow. i have also manually set up rules to allow all the ports i found on the microsoft site to be allowed. lastly, i tried the microsoft fix it tool on the microsoft support site. i have run out of ideas. the xbox is definitely on the same network as me, it can see my laptop and also my iomega iconnect when i go into setting and network connections. it tests positively when i test the network connection, but fails when i test the media centre connection.
i have gone through the setup 3 times now (i.e. reset the connection and put in another 8 digit code to set up) but still no luck.
I have a 360 elite and a wireless adapter i just recently got for the 360, every time go to use media center I can get to some media and push "A" on my controller and locks up freezes then shows up with "Connection Failure:The Xbox 360 could not connect to the Windows Media Center PC. Turn your Xbox 360 off then on again, and try to connect again." when its connected through the wireless adapter. I'm running home premium 64 bit windows 7.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have windows 7 on my computer, I got on my xbox 360 and setup the windows media center app on it about 4 monthes ago. I didn't have many problems at first for about a month. I always used it for movies and videos. The problems started slow at first a video might lag a little bit and buffer a couple of times, but I would restart my xbox 360 and it seemed to fix the problem until the next time. Now I have gotten to the point where everytime I exit windows media center or turn off my computer or xbox, I literally have to uninstall the xbox extender everytime and reinstall just to watch movies and videos, because if I don't, I will have an error saying the xbox can't find my pc and when I get on my pc wmc and go to the extender page it shows the xbox but says and don't guote me dont know for sure but it says something like xbox available but not ready or something like that. It will also have the yellow yield sign looking deal. Anyways when I uninstall and resetup wmc for the xbox it will work again only when I go to watch my videos in the videos section it lags real bad and during the video it wont say buffering but it acts like it is.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy xbox has been connected as a media center extender to this computer and router combination for several months now. The router is a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH. Earlier this week the media center extender was having trouble playing back video. After a restart of the computer the extender was no longer connected.When I try to add a new extender I get the message "Cannot add extender". Microsoft says to enable upnp and multicast. Check. Reflashed firmware to dd-wrt. No luck. Flash back to buffalo firmware. No luck. Try an old Linksys WRT54GL I have lying around. No Luck.The event logger has this error: "Media Center Extender Setup failed as the Extender was detected on the network but the UPnP search for the Extender failed (timed out after 20000ms)." Event ID: 538 Now I've done everything I could find about enabling network discovery, allowing anything to access media and such. Network and sharing is set pretty much wide open. I've also tried switching between home and work networks.With that said, I decided to check and see what updates have been installed. It turns out that an update was applied on the day I started having problems. It says it cannot be uninstalled. Description of the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 installation software feature update Note: I do not have system restore points. Small SSD and didn't take the time to figure out how to save them elsewhere.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed a Media Center server as a centralised location for all my media including broadcast and satelite TV. I view / play media using Xbox 360's as Media Center extenders. The setup was straight forward and works really well across my network. However I have one issue that I can not resolve.
Any items that have been recorded on the composite video input (satelite TV) of the TV tuner card in my Media Center server are in 4:3 aspect, but only when watched via xbox. If I watch these recordings directly on the Media Center server, they are in the correct 16:9 format. Xbox squashes the picture and puts black lines down either side of the picture. It does the same thing if you watch live TV from this composite video input. Digital TV inputs work fine.
Perhaps this is related to the file format used by Windows 7 - WTV, which from what I have read seems to have additional information embedded.
I have searched and trauled the web and this website for answers and this site seems to have some pretty good responses so i thought i would post here. (I have also made a post on Shark007 fourms)
I run windows 7 ultimate 64bit on Intel quad core, 2gb ram with nvidia geforce 9600gt. Starting out with no idea what to do, after a some fiddling and searching i have now got both shark's codecs installed (normal and x64bit) and can run some MKVs through Windows media center using my 360 as an extender.
However, on about half of my MKV files i get the error message:
"The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct coded is not installed or the file is corrupt" when trying to play on the xbox360. These same files play fine on Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player on the PC however.
I have tried various settings and also divx and CCCP codecs packs with the same result, (although i had to change some stuff in regedit to get MKV to show up on the xbox using divx) If you need any more information feel free to ask. Edit: I have noticed using sharks analyze function that the MKV which play are: "Format settings, ReFrames : 4 frames" and the ones which do not work are "Format settings, ReFrames : 5 frames"
I have VLC Portable as the default program for opening some video files, like .mp4 and .avi. And I have Foobar (portable) as the default program for .mp3.Usually the icons on .mp4, .avi, .mp3 files get updated with the icons of the assigned media players.But on this PC it's not working. They're still the same icons as if WMP was the default player.Does it have to do with the Standard user account? (Because on other PCs I run from an Admin account and I don't have such problems.)
